By David Banner

The lack of application of the term “terrorist” to Americans or Christians is certainly not due to a lack of evidence. For example, it would not be hard to recognize the brutal and destructive nature of slavery in America as institutionalized terrorism. Just as easy would be a recognition that groups like the Ku Klux Klan and other Christian-based, White supremacist organizations have repeatedly engaged in terrorist acts. Add to this list the lynching of Black people and the genocide of Native Americans and we soon realize that domestic terrorism in the United States is as American as apple pie.

But when John Patrick Bedell, a White, anti-government, conspiracy theorist opened fire in March of 2010 at the Pentagon injuring two, he was labeled in news reports as a “gunman” and the “Pentagon shooter”. We’ve even been told that there are supposedly Islamic “sleeper cells” secretly living among us waiting to carry out terrorist acts on U.S. soil. But when the all White, anti-government, Michigan based “Hutaree” were recently arrested for their intricate plan to murder a law enforcement official, then blow up the rest of his colleagues at his subsequent funeral, they certainly weren’t described as terrorists. Rather, they were portrayed in the media as an “anti-government” and “Christian-based” “militia”. These three instances alone are indicative of the bias inherent in the usage of the term “terrorist”.

By broadcasting the terrorist acts of others while omitting America’s own terrorist past and present, we create an artificial sense of self-righteousness. This artificial self-righteousness insulates the public from the dangers that White, domestic terrorists continue to pose to society. This insulation ultimately gives way to the “beam” in America’s collective sight; a blindness to these acts in the eyes of society.

“I have a very sensitive nose. I don’t like things to be overbearing and this is not that type of fragrance,” Combs assured his female viewers. “It’s a very clean scent, a very sensual, seductive scent. It’s the type of scent you want to get up close and personal with.”

Diddy’s presentation won over viewers, and the Home Shopping Network reported the mogul’s entire scent collection sold out in the 15 minutes following his appearance, setting a new sales record.

Russell Simmons’ critique of Bill Cosby has struck a nerve with rappers featured on the actor/comedian’s forthcoming Hip-Hop album, Bill Cosby Presents the Cosnarati: State of Emergency.

On Wednesday (Nov. 4), Simmons spoke out against Cosby’s criticism of Hip-Hop and the conduct of today’s youth in a blog about the entertainer on GlobalGrind.com

Despite expressing his admiration and respect for Cosby, Simmons feels Cosby’s attacks have undermined his “pure and good” intentions of motivating youth to realize their potential for success.

“Bill Cosby is an example of someone from the older generation who has consistently blamed the poets and asked suffering community members to bare the full burden of guilt for the struggles that they endure,” the Hip-Hop mogul wrote on Globalgrind.com. “What they don’t understand is that the young people who they criticize did not create their own realities.”

Cosnarati, which features appearances from rappers Supa Nova Slom, Jace the Great, represents the comedy veteran’s efforts to bridge the generational gap and inspire social change with socially conscious rap songs.

According to Jace the Great, the television and movie star realizes the power of Hip-Hop culture as “a means to reach more youth not to condemn them.”

“It is clear to see Cosby has actually moved beyond just addressing or blaming the youth,” Jace the Great told AllHipHop.com.

R&B singer Mary J. Blige gave back to her hometown of Yonkers, New York earlier this week, when she opened her new facility, the Mary J. Blige Center for Women.

Blige and Hip-Hop mogul Steve Stoute founded the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN) in 2008, as a way to encourage women by supporting educational programs, career development, self-esteem and personal growth.

Blige and Stoute are initially concentrating the foundation’s focus on Yonkers and the surrounding communities of West Chester, although plans are underway to service the entire country.

Blige announced the center’s opening during an emotionally charged press conference, that brought the R&B singer to tears.

“When I was 5-years-old there was a lot that happened to me that I carried all my life,” a tear eyed Blige said. “When I was growing up after that I saw so many women almost beaten to their death by men. I heard them screaming next door in my apartment building where I lived. I would walk outside and I would see them being slapped so hard, it looked like their head was gonna come off….and it wasn’t just in poverty that I seen this abuse, it was everywhere.”

“I remember when I was on the road, he would come and get my wife everyday to take her for her check up when she was pregnant with my son,” DMC reflected. “Like, just really dope stuff. He was Byford McDaniels, who I rapped about, was an incredible father. That’s why he was immortalized on Raising Hell. I got a lot of values from him.”

Those values were front and center on Friday (June 19) as DMC participated in President Obama’s national day of conversation about fatherhood and personal responsibility.

The rap star, who was joined by former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, kicked off the Father’s Day weekend event by speaking to students at Ballou Senior High School in Washington, DC.

The pair was among a group of 15 accomplished men who inspired young men and women to pursue their dreams and aspirations by sharing personal stories while visiting Washington area community organizations.

A town hall meeting on fatherhood with Obama, community organization leaders and young men from the community organizations followed the visits as well as a barbecue with 130 high school juniors and seniors on the South Lawn of the White House.

“I think what Obama wanted to do; he wanted these kids not to just look at him and what he achieved,” DMC told AllHipHop.com. “More importantly, what about their family? What about the black man next door that the kid could look at as an example?…It’s easy to make babies, but making a baby and being a father and being a man that these kids can look to for leadership, direction and information that’s a whole ‘nother story.”

Baltimore, Maryland has become the first city to sign a “proclamation document” announcing June as National Basketball and Hip-Hop Culture Month.

Mayor Sheila Dixon (D) signed the proclamation earlier this week in Baltimore.

The recognition was spearheaded by Derrick E. Vaughan, founder of the non-profit organization that bears the title as the newly christened month (NBHHCM).

“It’s an honor and a privilege to have this Proclamation document for the past, present, and future individuals who have been and will be influenced by the fusion of hoops and Hip-Hop,” said Vaughan to AllHipHop.com in a prepared statement. “The recognition is historic for this generation.”

Vaughan’s organization prides itself on promoting the “history, legacy, and future of the hoops and Hip-Hop culture fusion in America.”

They reference 1984 as the beginning of the Hip-Hop-basketball fusion , citing the mix of basketball stars Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Hip-Hop’s emergence into the mainstream.

Baltimore and the NBHHCM kicked off this month with a June 1 “Tip-Off” celebration, the event was held downtown and featured rap, breaking, and graffiti performances from local acts B-Morsell, Raw Ned, Nitrus, and Butchie Mears.

Afterward, Mears’ artwork was dedicated to the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of African American History and Culture. Rapper B-Morsell, AKA the Dunkadelic MC, created the first Hip-Hop song inspired by the event entitled “Dunkadelic TV Rap.”

Derrick Vaughan is hopeful news of the event’s success will spread, and prompt other cities will sign on to give their own unique interpretations.

“June is the perfect month for rappers to release songs for the Summer,” he stated. “I hope to see more songs dedicated to the hoops and Hip-Hop culture in the future.”

For more information on the National Basketball and Hip-Hop Culture Month, visit www.NBHHCM.org.

Will Smith’s production company has partnered with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring to life the story of one of the many heroes of the Hurricane Katrina aftermath, the two companies announced Wednesday (May 20).

Overbrook Entertainment and Sony have earned the film rights to the story of former Marine John Keller, who rescued nearly 244 of his neighbors in New Orleans in the days that followed one of the largest natural disaster on American soil to date.

Keller, who was nicknamed “The Can Man” by the media, orchestrated the rescue of his elderly neighbors from their apartment building, the American Can Company in New Orleans’ Mid City neighborhood.

Following the levee breach that flooded the city and added to the damage already caused by Hurricane winds, American Can sat in over 11 feet of water.

Keller single-handedly kept his neighbors calm and controlled while helping them exit the building.

While the announcement from Overbrook and Sony did not specify a production start date or casting, The Times-Picayune reports that Overbrook executive Jeff Sommerville has confirmed that Smith is likely to portray the 6’7″ Keller himself.

“When I came back after Katrina and talked to the old people I had saved, they all said God was going to bless me, I’m going to receive my blessing” Keller told the Times-Picayune. “Well, I guess this is it. “I wasn’t in it for the money,” he added. “But I was able to affect so many people. It wasn’t just the people I got out of the building but everybody who valued those people too.”

The film will be written and directed by John Lee Hancock, the writer behind the 1997 blockbuster Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Popular court TV judge Greg Mathis has partnered with filmmaker Matty Rich to create the unique video game Mathis “Detroit” Street Judge.

Set to be available for the X-Box 360, Playstation 3, and PC, the third-person shooter will tell the fictional story of Detroit felon La-Ron Washington, who is trying to re-enter society with two strikes over his head.

His last chance to go straight is immediately compromised when he is framed for the murder of a high-ranking Detroit crime boss.

If Washington fails to clear his name, he will receive a game ending third strike and life sentence from Judge Mathis.

I see this game as a way for young players to be part of the glamorous thug life that is so popular in Hip-Hop culture without them actually indulging in the life,” Judge Mathis explained to Yahoo.com. “Video games allow you to obtain the fulfillment of their fascination with that lifestyle without being in it. We’re not going to stop the violent genre of video games like Grand Theft Auto, so instead you try to engage it in a way that allows them to obtain the fulfillment they’re looking for but also give them the choice of having a mainstream, successful life.”

Pioneering Hip-Hop mogul and activist Russell Simmons led a protest today (March 25) in Manhattan to end the controversial Rockefeller Drug Laws.

The rally began this afternoon in front of Governor David Paterson’s Manhattan office, located at 633 3rd Ave. Enacted in 1973, Rockefeller Drug Laws decree stiff mandatory sentences of 15-25 years to life in prison for selling 56 grams or more of narcotics, including marijuana.

The bill has received criticism for its perceived focus on low-level and minority offenders, mostly incarcerated for possessing small amounts of crack cocaine.

Although moderate reforms were made in 2004, Simmons is pushing for the New York Senate and Governor Paterson to support a new Assembly bill that will restore judicial discretion in sentencing.

Staring on March 31, Forte will work with In Arms Reach, a program designed to provide a positive environment for at-risk youth and children of incarcerated parents.

Forte will teach a twelve-week course geared towards students aged 12-15. He will use music as a therapeutic means to address stress, anger and pain.

“John hopes that the catharsis of song composition will help children deal with the stigma of having a family member who is incarcerated and rebuild the spirit of those who have been traumatized or abandoned,” a representative for Forte told AllHipHop.com about the course.

With President-elect Barack Obama’s historic election run now complete, Atlanta rap star Ludacris is finally breaking his silence on Obama’s marked criticism of his July dedication song.

On the track entitled “Politics As Usual” taken from DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz: The Preview, Ludacris professed his full support for Obama.

That support was overshadowed by controversial lyrics that labeled President Obama’s former Democrat rival Hillary Clinton as a “b**ch,” and alluded to Republican John McCain as being close to disability.

Ludacris also took aim at George W. Bush, calling the 43rd President of the United States “mentally handicapped.”

“The song was my artistic expression and was meant to get people who weren’t involved in the political process involved,” Ludacris reasoned to AllHipHop.com. “Being as though it was the first mixtape to reach the United States government was a bit overwhelming.”

Obama, who in 2006 first met with Ludacris privately to discuss community activism and Hip-Hop’s role in it, was not understanding of Luda’s vitriolic words and publicly condemned the track.
