“If some of these folks were around when Columbus set sail, they probably would have been founding members of the Flat Earth Society,” Obama quipped.

“Maybe they would have agreed with one of the pioneers of the radio who apparently said, ‘Television won’t last. It’s a flash in the pan.’

“Or one of Henry Ford’s advisors who was quoted saying, ‘The horse is here to stay but the automobile is only…a fad.’ I can’t prove this, but I do not think that man got the promotion he was looking for,” Obama said.

All of the options – whether more drilling or increasing gas milage for cars to cut consumption – take time, Obama said.

Byrd-Scolaro was waiting for the bathroom at an S & B Restaurant when she found there was an unconscious woman locked in there. After a waitress broke down the door, Byrd-Scolaro performed CPR on the woman, saving her life.

The New York Daily News reports:

“We pulled her out of the bathroom,” Byrd-Scolaro recounted. “She wasn’t breathing.”

After three minutes of CPR, the unidentified young woman began gurgling, came back to life — and flipped the bird to her rescuers, officials said.

EMS workers said the woman had overdosed inside the ladies’ room. Boyd-Scolaro said it was the first time that she’d ever performed the life-saving maneuver.

Edwards was one of several hundred state judges and education officials at a conference Monday in Midtown Manhattan on school justice and the school-to-prison pipeline. Many experts say zero-tolerance policies, a holdover from the war on drugs, punish all major and minor rule infractions equally and create the pipeline effect, bringing police disproportionately into high-minority schools.

“We now have 10 years of busting kids out of school for minor infractions, but we’re just passing forward the next generation of criminals,” said Kaye, who also chairs the New York State Permanent Judicial Commission on Justice for Children.

Kaye brought judicial and educational workers together at the first “National Leadership Summit On School-Justice Partnerships” in New York City’s Roosevelt Hotel this week. According to program materials, the goal is “keeping kids in school and out of court.”

UC President Mark Yudof decried Farrakhan as “provocative” and “divisive” following his speech at UC Berkeley.

“Louis Farrakhan is a provocative, divisive figure with a long history of racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic speech,” Yudof said. “It was distressing in the extreme that a student organization invited him to speak on the UC Berkeley campus.”

Limbaugh had criticized President Barack Obama for committing troops to fight Joseph Kony and the LRA and defended the group without having any knowledge of what they really did, seemingly just to find a new reason to attack Obama.

Here is what Limbaugh said about the Lord’s Resistance Army In October

Lord’s Resistance Army are Christians. They are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Obama has sent troops, United States troops to remove them from the battlefield, which means kill them. That’s what the lingo means, “to help regional forces remove from the battlefield,” meaning capture or kill.

So that’s a new war, a hundred troops to wipe out Christians in Sudan, Uganda, and — (interruption) no, I’m not kidding. Jacob Tapper just reported it. Now, are we gonna help the Egyptians wipe out the Christians? Wouldn’t you say that we are? I mean the Coptic Christians are being wiped out, but it wasn’t just Obama that supported that. The conservative intelligentsia thought it was an outbreak of democracy. Now they’ve done a 180 on that, but they forgot that they supported it in the first place. Now they’re criticizing it.

Lord’s Resistance Army objectives. I have them here. “To remove dictatorship and stop the oppression of our people.” Now, again Lord’s Resistance Army is who Obama sent troops to help nations wipe out. The objectives of the Lord’s Resistance Army, what they’re trying to accomplish with their military action in these countries is the following: “To remove dictatorship and stop the oppression of our people; to fight for the immediate restoration of the competitive multiparty democracy in Uganda; to see an end to gross violation of human rights and dignity of Ugandans; to ensure the restoration of peace and security in Uganda, to ensure unity, sovereignty, and economic prosperity beneficial to all Ugandans, and to bring to an end the repressive policy of deliberate marginalization of groups of people who may not agree with the LRA ideology.” Those are the objectives of the group that we are fighting, or who are being fought and we are joining in the effort to remove them from the battlefield.

After defending the LRA and criticizing Obama for taking them on, Limbaugh received some information about the LRA that made him rethink his statement.

Is that right? The Lord’s Resistance Army is being accused of really bad stuff? Child kidnapping, torture, murder, that kind of stuff? Well, we just found out about this today. We’re gonna do, of course, our due diligence research on it. But nevertheless we got a hundred troops being sent over there to fight these guys — and they claim to be Christians.

So now we can add defending mass murderers to Limbaugh’s impressive resume of offending African Americans, immigrants, women and the disabled. Kony and the LRA are being made into international bad guys by the new documentary “Invisible Children” which has gone viral thanks to an impressive marketing campaign.

Now Limbaugh is attempting to say that there is a double standard in his treatment and the way rappers are treated for misogynist language and the way he was treated. He wrote on his website:

“You talk about a double standard, One of the greatest illustrations of it is that rappers can practically say anything they want about women, and it’s called art.”

What Limbaugh doesn’t mention is that rappers are held to a standard of misogyny. Rapper Too Short and XXL Magazine’s Vanessa Satten faced a similar campaign of petitions and boycotts and a call to have the editor fired which resulted in an apology from Too Short and Vanessa Satten.

Misogyny is not right when it comes from hip-hop and it not right when it comes from right wing radio hosts. What is particularly disturbing about Limbaugh’s misogyny is that he is known as the voice of the Republican party. Limbaugh is the highest rated talk show host in the country and boasts of 20 million day times listeners, known as ditto-heads, who follow Limbaugh without question.

Ronald Reagan called Limbaugh, the “Number One voice for conservatism in our Country” and he received the “Defender Of The Constitution” award from CPAC, where he was the keynote speaker in 2009. Limbaugh has had George W. Bush as a guest six times and has had his hero Dick Cheney on the show.

So should Limbaugh be held to a higher standard than rappers, shock jocks and comedians who use misogynist terms? Misogyny is wrong in any context but when it being used with the full support of a major political party it is particularly disturbing.

Many in the African American community have been critical of misogyny in hip hop. Corporate sponsored hip hop should have to face the same criticism Limbaugh does but that in no way makes Limbaugh’s comments any less acceptable. Limbaugh’s childish “hip-hop does it too” defense shows the standards of misogyny he sets for himself.. Perhaps if Snoop Dogg was the “voice of the Democratic Party” he might face the same scrutiny as Limbaugh.

In Horowitz’s essay, he interviewed Randy Bott, a religion professor at the Mormon college, Brigham Young University, who said that due to the Biblical curse of Cain, African Americans where “blessed” to have not received the priesthood until their race was ready for it and that “’God has always been discriminatory.”

On the other hand, it did not explain why the priesthood ban was instituted or why it persisted until 1978, nor did it offer an apology for the ban. “It is not known precisely why, how, or when this restriction began,” the statement read, “but … it ended decades ago. Some have attempted to explain the reason for this restriction but these attempts should be viewed as speculation and opinion, not doctrine.”

Celebrated Mormon writer Joanna Brooks wrote in Religion Dispatches that “Professor Bott is no outlier. Especially among older Mormons, racist rationale for the priesthood ban-linking it to Old Testament pretexts, or to moral infirmity in a pre-earthly life by the souls of Africans and African-Americans, and other racist apologetic mental gymnastics exemplified in Bott’s statement to the Post -persist and circulate, generally unquestioned and unchallenged.”

Officially termed “Lean Beef Trimmings,” the product is a ground-up combination of beef scraps, cow connective tissues and other beef trimmings that are treated with ammonium hydroxide to kill pathogens like salmonella and E. coli. It’s then blended into traditional meat products like ground beef and hamburger patties.

Custer and microbiologist Gerald Zernstein concluded in a study that the trimmings are a “high risk product,” but Zernstein tells The Daily that “scientists in D.C. were pressured to approve this stuff with minimal safety approval” under President George H.W. Bush’s administration. The USDA asserts that its ground beef purchases “meet the highest standard for food safety.”

Okay, Rush, that’s classy. The old African bone in the nose stereotype. Wasn’t funny when the racist white school kids called the black kids that and it’s definitely not funny when a grown man with audience of millions of easily influenced dittoheads says it either.

7.  ”I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well.  They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well.  I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve.”

I wasn’t super offended by this, the whole black quarterback/coach thing has been going on for years in sports, but the quote was so offensive that Retired General Wesley Clarke said:

There can be no excuse for such statements. Mr. Limbaugh has the right to say whatever he wants, but ABC and ESPN have no obligation to sponsor such hateful and ignorant speech. Mr. Limbaugh should be fired immediately.

When a respected, retired general condemns the statement of a sportscaster, you know he’s gone too far.

8. Limbaugh’s many attacks on Obama.

Limbaugh has called Obama a ‘halfrican American’ has said that Obama was not Black but Arab because Kenya is an Arab region, even though Arabs are less than one percent of Kenya. Since mainstream America has become more accepting of African-Americans, Limbaugh has decided to play against its new racial fears, Arabs and Muslims. Despite the fact Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law school, Limbaugh has called him an ‘affirmative action candidate.’ Limbaugh even has repeatedly played a song on his radio show ‘Barack the Magic Negro’ using an antiquated Jim Crow era term for Black a man who many Americans are supporting for president. Way to go Rush.

So Rush Limbaugh has managed to make racist attacks on four of the most admired and respected people of African descent in the past one hundred years, in Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Colin Powell and Barack Obama. He has claimed that Joe the Plumber, who isn’t even a plumber is more important in this election than Colin Powell, a decorated military veteran who has served honorably in three administrations. How can the Republican party stand by this man and let their candidates appear on his show? Rush Limbaugh’s comments are so racist, they’re funny, in a Borat, Archie Bunker kind of way. What is not funny is the millions of dittoheads who listen to him, who take in and re-spout all the racist rhetoric that he spits. Limbaugh’s statements are echoed in the racist, angry Palin/McCain supporters who shout ‘kill him,’ ‘terrorist,’ ‘communist,’ ‘traitor,’ ‘socialist’ and ‘off with his head.’

9. “We need segregated buses… This is Obama’s America.”

Okay Limbaugh let’s take back all of the Civil Rights movement and bring segregation back. But you’re not a racist.

So everything Obama is doing is a big plot to give money to Black people. Any evidence? Stop the racist fear-mongering.

THE TWO CONTESTED QUOTES

We ran these two quotes as part of our original list of ten. However, in the fall of 2009, this post surfaced in the debate that followed Limbaugh’s dismissal from an investment group attempting to purchase the St. Louis Rams. NewsOne has, as yet, not been able to determine the veracity of these quotes.  We note the following for the record:

• These two quotes were both sourced to a book by Jack Huberman called “101 People Who Are Really Screwing America,” published by Nation Books in 2006. The author of this book, in turn, claims that he procured these quotes from a source which he has refused to reveal “on advice of counsel.”
• Rush Limbaugh has vigorously denied that he said these things.

In sum, NewsOne can no longer vouch for the accuracy of these quotes. Nor can we trust Limbaugh, who never denied saying the other eight racist quotes on our original list, and whose own track record of duplicity gives us pause.  We keep them in our post for their news value as a controversial, and perhaps dubious attribution. Segregated, of course. Which should make some people very happy.

Rapper, Too Short, real name Todd Shaw, who was recently the scapegoat for negativity in hip hop after he did a video with XXL Magazine in which he advised young boys to be sexually aggressive with females, is blaming an industry conspiracy for negativity in hip-hop.

In an interview with HipHopDx, Too Short blames the record labels who control the output of hip-hop for shutting down conscious hip-hop and destroying the balance of positivity and negativity that it once had.

I had made a verbal deal with Barry Weiss, where he was like, “Right now would be the perfect time, you should do like the raunchiest Too Short album ever – the album cover, the songs, just do a dirty f***in’ Too Short album.” This is the executive running the company advising me to put out an entire album of just cursing and sex.

And I noticed that at a certain point in Hip Hop the major labels stopped signing and promoting the positive artists, the ones that was just really positive. Positive images were hard to get out there. So I’m just saying that at some point it wasn’t that Hip Hop changed on its own, it had a little push. I’m a real conspiracy theorist, and I just feel like there had to be a gathering of the major labels and somebody had to say like, “Look, we gotta keep this positive shit off the airwaves and let this booty-shaking shit take over. Obama praised several sports figures, including Jeremy Lin, who he claimed he knew about since Lin’s Harvard days due U.S. Secretary of Education who played for Harvard where Lin played. He also praised his favorite team, the Chicago Bulls and Derrick Rose.

Also receiving praise were L.A. Clippers, Chris Paul, who he claimed he crossed over and Blake Griffin as well as the critically acclaimed TV show, “The Wire” whcih he called “one of the greatest shows of all time” and his favorite character, Omar Little.

Obama: And I said, man, Blake Griffin is unbelievable, and you guys seem to be really clicking. I said, the only thing is you got to tell Blake to just take that 12-, 15-footer when he gets it because he’s got a good stroke, but he always looks like he’s hesitating a little bit because he wants to go inside. And if he starts getting that shot like Karl Malone, he’ll be unstoppable.

Tyson has recently appeared on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart and “Real Time” with Bill Mahr, NPR, CBS this morning and MSNBC to promote his book, “Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier.”

But it probably also has something to do with how Tyson talks about science and space exploration. He is not just a child prodigy with a lot of media appearances and a penchant for wearing celestial-themed ties and vests without a trace of irony. He is a gifted communicator who displays qualities of leadership that seem lacking in so many public officials. For one, he makes the reasons for space exploration accessible, putting its importance into simple and often humorous terms. “Venus has a runaway greenhouse effect—I kind of want to know what happened there,” he said in an NPR interview Monday. “Mars once had running water—it’s bone dry today; something bad happened there as well. Asteroids have us in [their] sights. Dinosaurs didn’t have a space program, so they’re not here to talk about this problem. We are and we have the power to do something.”

He also has a genuine passion and child-like fascination with what he does, and isn’t afraid to wrap the space program up in grand talk of bold adventure and big ideas. His enthusiasm is infectious—and credible—even for those who couldn’t care less about space and see it as a nice-to-have at a time of bloated deficits and economic pain. He thinks President Obama should be talking about upping NASA’s budget because “not only is it the grandest epic adventure a human being can undertake” but such an increase would “create a shift in the state of mind of people where they will say hey, ‘we are dreaming about tomorrow again.’ ”
