Woman Returns A Found $357,959 Check! Would YOU?

By News One April 9, 2009 12:43 pm

BP Member MyOneMile found this story about a LA woman who found a real $357,959 check outside the post office.

The debate is raging on our forums.  The big question is:  what would YOU do?

Here’s the full AP report:

LOS ANGELES – As she walked from a post office, Talon Curtis thought she’d found one of those gimmicky sweepstakes offers on the ground that scream something like “$357,959.55″ in big bold letters and “This is not a real check” in much smaller type. But just as she was about to do her part for a cleaner planet and deliver the paper from the parking lot to a trash can, she noticed it was a real cashier’s check with a real signature.

“I couldn’t believe it. I almost passed out,” Curtis, who works as a loan negotiator, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “I have never seen a check that big. Not in my possession, anyway.”

She immediately set out to find its rightful recipient, but it was Saturday afternoon and the banks were closing. On Monday, with help from KCAL-TV reporter Dave Malkoff, she located the check’s owner, who had arrived at her bank in a panic.

“I think she had walked in at the same time the bank manager called me back,” Curtis said. “I could hear her walking up to him. and I could hear all this commotion in the background.”

Curtis said she spoke briefly with the woman on the phone about a possible meeting, but Pacific Mercantile Bank instructed her to mail the check to them instead.

Not willing to take a chance on the mail, Curtis delivered it personally. A bank employee confirmed it had arrived.

Curtis said she never thought of keeping the check for herself, and she declined the woman’s offer of a reward. Still, she’s just a little disappointed.

“I just wanted to see her face,” Curtis said, laughing. “I just wanted to let her know that there are honest people left in this world.”

  • 4-10-2009 7:25 pm

I WOULD HAVE KEPT IT!!! HELL I AINT STEAL IT LOL

  • 4-10-2009 5:50 pm

Of Course Id turn it in…Its a check!! Its traceable! If it was a douffle bag full of cash…No.

  • 4-10-2009 5:26 pm

I would have thought about it,keeping it. In the end I would have done the same. I have a good heart first of all. Second I don’t know where that money come from and wouldn’t want to get into nothing. A reward would have been nice though, why not?

  • 4-10-2009 4:02 pm

that was nice but i wonder why she declined the reward….that was suppose to be her blessing…

  • 4-10-2009 12:32 pm

Maaaaaaaan, I’da sold that check to some big time drug dealer or something…I don’t know, but all I know is that I wouldn’t've turned JACK sh*t…

  • 4-10-2009 12:31 pm

    but if it was cash………

  • 4-10-2009 12:04 pm

The temptation would be there to keep it HOWEVER being that it’s a cheque, I would not want to go to jail for Fraud…

I believe that it was a good idea to return the check. God is good, this woman will have a blessing. I am glad that I am an honest person as well. God will bless you and he surely will bless her.

it’s easy to say what you would do, since y’all aren’t in the situation. most of y’all are lying. since it’s a check, and cashing it isn’t worth going to jail, i would return it, but i’m taking a 15% finder’s fee (that’s standard for any large sum of money). if it was cash, that person would be SOL. real talk. i have bills, too.

  • 4-10-2009 9:11 am

its pretty simple, the woman who found the check had no choice but to give it back….its a check duhhhhh and can easily be traced……now lets assume this was cash that she saw……i doubt she would take it back…..?????????????

  • 4-10-2009 9:02 am

YES I WOULD RETURN AND SLAP THE MESS OUT OF THE PERSON WHO LOST, HOW COULD YOU BE SO CARELESS TO LOSE A CHECK IN THAT AMOUNT…

  • 4-10-2009 8:17 am

Yes I would return it, a lot of people would want a reward all I would want would be a blessing to hit the lottery to pay off my bills and then I would even give the person I gave the check back to a piece of it because it would of been a blessing for giving the check back.

  • 4-10-2009 8:04 am

This woman did the right thing as I would have done. I have found people’s wallets and bank cards took the time to locate them and returned the items to them, even if it was cash and there was some way to trace the owner I would return it to them, it’s the right thing to do. Imagine if more people were like her, what a better world this would be. GOD will bless her with a bigger reward.

I wouldn’t keep the check, but I would accept a award for it. I wouldn’t be expecting anything from it because I know I would be blessed in the end, but if someone was to offer me a award, then I think I would definitely take it. But if it was money, I would take half and give half back. I am just being honest right there. I would definitely asked god to forgive me on that one.

  • 4-10-2009 6:09 am

Like most members are saying, if it is a check, ummm, why bother because it will be traced. So I don’t see, why the forums are raging. It’s a simple thought process…Check,Give back, Cash, KEEP!!!!

  • 4-10-2009 6:07 am

NAH DONT WANT IT… IM NOT THAT TYPE OF A PERSON … BUT I WOULD WANNA C HER SO I CANT SAY 2 HER “DAMN HOW DID U FEEL WHEN U NOTICED IT WAS GONE” BUT WAT CAN U SAY IM A GOOD PERSON AND IT FELT GOOD TO HEAR SUMONE ELSE ITS HONEST….

  • 4-10-2009 6:01 am

if its a check then you know that money is already signed for. the person that lost is just lost it,if you try to cash it, thats fraud. but if it was cash, hell no i aint returning s**t, they didn’t return the land back to us. when they return the land and the knowledge of ourselves back to us, i might consider thinking about thinking of returning some s**t i found. other than that, fukecm! with the economy in the housing market absolutely burnt up like it is, im buying a house.

  • 4-10-2009 5:13 am

It was a check, never mind. CASh on the other hand.. Im a honest guy i think i would keep soemthing still though for my honesty.

buy a new car. somehting under 12k. lol

  • 4-10-2009 4:09 am

It’s a CHECK not cash and the check has the recipient’s name on it and will be traced back to the owner. If you’re a fool trying to cash that check it’s called FRAUD. Now ask yourself is that check worth your freedom?

  • 4-10-2009 4:07 am

not to mention a whole lotta trouble and paranoia too aint no tellin how they can track s**t no they have lojaks for everythang now

  • 4-10-2009 4:03 am

you got a point on cashin the check but let that have been cash and unmarked bills sheeeeiiiitttt. somebody would have just been shawt and my kids would be set for college but then again i might turn it in even if it is the right thang to do.but i dont know times are hard’n mofo and that much jack would be mighty tempting but mighty handy as well lol

  • 4-10-2009 3:31 am

    HELL NO!

  • 4-10-2009 3:09 am

Ha!…ummm recession!.. Hell FU*K NO I WOULDN’T RETURN IT… they’d have to pry it outta my damn cold dead fingers if they wanted it back!

  • 4-10-2009 3:02 am

in this day n time and all thats going on. alot of ppl might have returned that chec good to be a k. it could have been her word against theirs. but with techology they would have known that it was found n cashed due to it had to be cleared. but i would have excepted an award for finding it. its always good 2 be a good samaritain and all but shiiid u neva know.
