Today, and everyday, countless people awake to go to a job they hate. A job that makes them sick to their stomach to think about. A job where they count the hours until it’s time to leave. And then, they’re up and at it again the next day. (Study finds professionals dissatisfied with their jobs)

Does this sound familiar? For me and many of my coaching clients, this rings true. Early in my career I worked jobs that I didn’t love. Some were a means to an end. Some were playing it safe. And others, I thought were good opportunities. They all amounted to me being unhappy. (Watch this interview on finding your passion.)

Once we identify that it’s time to make a change and leave that job, it can take some time for that new opportunity to materialize. So what do you do in the meantime? My suggestion: Find What To Take.

What I mean by “find what to take” is that right now there are some key things you can take away from your current job that will be very helpful for you in your future endeavors.  These opportunities probably have been right in front of you the whole time.  But because you’ve basked so much in despising your gig you’ve ignored them. So right now it is critical to be proactive and identify what you want to take when you leave.

3 THINGS TO TAKE

Education: Some may want to learn some new software that their company uses while others may want to get a better understanding of budgeting. Maybe you’d like to learn how another department functions. What about that top salesman you could learn a few things from? If you’re into event planning why not volunteer for the next company event.

Relationships: As they say: it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Cherish every connection. Whether you love your job or not, never stop developing relationships and expanding your network. This is what will make the difference long term in your career and provide you with influence. Always be willing to help others. Plus, you never know when you may have to ask for a favor, like a letter of reference.

Your Integrity: This is paramount and simple.  Be authentic with others. Do what you say you’re going to do. Keep the agreements you make. Take responsibility for your actions.

You get the idea. Opportunities abound but you have to take action.

So today, write down three things that you’d like to take away with you when you leave your job. Those things that will be extremely valuable to you as you move your career forward. Find what to take.
