On The Corner: Whitney Houston Funeral In Newark

Whitney Houston’s funeral was a star-studded affair, limited to an exclusive list of Hollywood elites and family friends. But that didn’t keep everyday folks from Houston’s hometown of Newark from lining the six-block barricade designed to keep them as far away as possible.

Watch the video to see the people of Newark say good-bye to Whitney on her “home going” celebration.

There was a somber mood in downtown Newark when we spoke with locals about the passing of their hometown superstar Whitney Houston. Many spoke fondly of Houston’s “realness” and “down-to-earth” spirit. Some reminded us of her charitable ways. Others cried when they reflected on Houston’s life.

In this is episode of NewOne’s original video series “On The Corner,” we joined twelve-year-old Victoria Pannell, the National Action Network’s Northeast Regional Director of the Youth, in a march and rally in a Harlem neighborhood where gang, drug, and gun activity is rampant.

Dozens of Harlemites congregated Friday at Wright Brothers Playground, a small park that has a reputation of being unsafe for kids, to denounce the illicit activities that go on in the recreation space.

National Action Network recently announced the national Shake-Off the Violence tour and coast-to-coast cease fire coordinated by NAN’s Youth Movement and the Youth in Action group.

New York — African-Americans are in a state of emergency in the country with unemployment at a high of 15 percent and continuing to rise.

Last week, Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network held a job fair where numerous employers showed up to present their open positions to hundreds of unemployed African-Americans.

Many of them stopped to talk to us about their unemployment experience and how tough the job market is.

Should Latinos Be Allowed To Use The N-Word?

Last week, we took to the streets of Harlem to ask the historic neighborhood’s Black residents if they feel it’s ok for Latino’s to use the N-Word.

The responses varied from many saying they should never use the word, to others saying it all depends on “the way that you say it.”

The topic of Latino’s using the N-Word burst onto the national scene when J-Lo said it in her song, “I’m Real,” which featured Black rapper Ja-Rule.

In the song, she said the lyrics:

Now people screamin’ what the deal with you and so and so
I tell them n****s to mind they biz, but they don’t hear me though

New York — Last week, we took to the streets of Harlem to ask residents if they felt former President Bill Clinton changed Harlem in any way since his arrival in 2001.

The overwhelming response was that the former president didn’t help change anything.

Last week, news broke that the William J. Clinton Foundation would be leaving Harlem and moving to a Wall Street office.

Clinton, who came to the neighborhood with his foundation in 2001 to much fanfare, left with much less of it as residents claim they barely, if ever, saw the former president in the neighborhood.

Buzz around MSG always revolved around the visiting opponent – Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James. But in a decade comprised of Scott Layden, Isiah Thomas, Frederic Weis and one playoff appearance, Knick fans haven’t had much to be excited about.

A Pennsylvania high school has recently begun experimenting with separating students by race and gender to improve academic performance.

Described as a mentoring program to help Black students improve their grades, the program has alternately drawn criticism by many who are reminded of the painful era of segregation. McCaskey East High School teacher Angela Tilgham, who is Black, proposed the idea stating that grouping Black students with a positive role model can improve their academic achievement and self-esteem.

In this installment of “On The Corner,” we took to the streets of Harlem to see how people felt about this controversial issue.
