Dr. Liu Nan, assistant professor of art at FAMU and the curator of the exhibit, co-hosted by the Tallahassee Chinese Association, said he wanted to give Tallahassee a glimpse of Chinese culture.

“In Tallahassee, it’s hard to get this kind of art show,” said Liu. “In New York City you can see this at the Metropolitan Museum and visit Asian and Latin American cultures, but in Tallahassee I think this will be a good cultural event.”

In two weeks, Liu selected 29 pieces —including paintings from his students and his own son, Ethan.

The exhibit showed different mediums of art: painting, sculptures, jewelry, photography, martial arts and live folk songs. Paintings were from local Chinese artists and visiting Chinese artist Ye Xu Xuan of the Zhu Jia Calligraphy Institute in Su Zhou, China.

“He [Ye Xu Xuan] opened a calligraphy institute for 30 years. He’s really good, a renowned, international artist for Calligraphy painting,” said Liu.

Xuan was visiting his relatives in Tallahassee and he was looking for a place to display his art when Liu asked him to display some of his pieces at the exhibit. All of Xuan’s paintings were created in Tallahassee and they are traditional Chinese paintings.

The exhibit was not only for the Tallahassee community to experience the 500-year-old culture but to also influence the young artists. The exhibit was apart of the four-week Horizon’s Art Camp, which teaches children from ages 6 through 12. The summer camp was taught by the FAMU Visual Art department to expose children to diverse cultures through art.

“All the children here study [art] and we want to open a different window to them, a different experience,” said Liu.

Aja Roache, Foster Tanner’s Gallery Coordinator and visiting professor said, “We were excited to have art for the art lovers. I think he [Liu] shows a great range of traditional Chinese art work.”

Liu also gave a demonstration of calligraphy to about 100 people. He said when studying Chinese art it was a requirement to know about past artist so students understand the tradition and appreciate the art.

“You must know the masters. Learn and then you create”, said Liu.

In calligraphy he said, “White spaces leave room for imagination. The paper should not be filled.”

Tallahassee Chinese Martial Arts Center performed Tai Chi and the traditional Lion and Dragon Festival dance.

The Martial Arts Center has been around for ten years and their vision is to let more people know about Chinese martial arts and to practice it.

Lisa Liu, the wife of the owner of the center, said, “Martial Arts creates a bridge between American and Chinese culture.” Chinese Martial art is important for healing and for health.

Lisa Liu said her husband wants to spread Chinese culture and the center was also showing support for Liu’s exhibit.

The Chinese Art Exhibition will be on view until June 22.

In her talk, Davis focused on the culture of violence and the prison system, arguing that violence is epidemic in part because our society doesn’t treat its root causes.

“We don’t talk about prevention,” said Davis . “We talk about getting the perpetrator.”

“[Criminals] can stay in prison forever but the problem still proliferates,” Davis said. “We participate in hiding it and it will erupt.”

Commenting that violence continues within the jail system, she added: “Men get punished by the state in prison. Women get punished at home… Violence starts within the home.”

Davis said that violence within the family is covered up especially when it comes to incest and sex offenders.

“There are some sex offenders who are not included on the registry list,” referring specifically to perpetrators of incest. “So much violence we encounter is in the family. ” By not addressing violence within the family, Davis continued, “it reinforces that danger comes from a stranger.”

Violence within the home spreads out to the workforce, Davis said. “Look at the other modes of violence in police, military, and prisons. We have to find out how to address it. It will not be resolve by sending them to prisons. ”

Davis added: “This is an argument for prison abolition… prison abolition is the next abolition. A world without violence, violence against black boys, intimate violence and state violence.”

There were approximately 100 FAMU students in attendance at the march in Sanford. Students were joined by civil rights activists Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton. Thousands of protesters marched into Sanford to rally for justice, led by the family of Trayvon Martin.

“I know I cannot bring my baby back, but I’m sure going to [try to] make changes to make sure this doesn’t happen to another family,” said Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, according to WBPF, a ABC News affiliate in South Florida.

Kendra Neal, a public relations student at FAMU graduating this semester, was a part of the march in Sanford yesterday. Neal is. Neal, from Kansas City, Mo., has been one of the leaders in the “Justice for Trayvon” initiative. She said that she was happy that FAMU students had the opportunity to participate in the march and stand alongside the Martin family in their fight.

“I hope this experience is something all students who participated can hold dear and look back on as their contribution to the world and civil rights,” said Neal.

In addition to Monday’s Sanford expedition, FAMU students also staged a march to the State Capitol Building. Students marched from the “FAMU Set,” the epicenter of the campus, to the Capitol. They received praise from some as well as heckling from others on their march to the capitol. Roughly 200 people gathered at the footsteps of the Capitol building.

The group stayed at the capitol for hours, calling for the arrest of George Zimmerman and clarification of the “Stand Your Ground Law, the self-defense statute in Florida that allows residents to use deadly force as long as they have reasonable belief of a threat.

FAMU students along with students from FSU and TCC held a candlelight vigil last night. A small group gathered in front of the eternal flame, a monument in the middle of campus.

MEET OUR BLACK HISTORY MONTH GAME CHANGERS:

Film director and FAMU alumnus Will Packer will be previewing his new movie, “Think Like A Man,” three months before its commercial release in a screening that will be free to FAMU students.

One of the featured films, “Flying Ace” — about Black airmen during World War One — was released in the 1920s by Norman Studios, a white-run Jacksonville, Fla. enterprise that specialized in producing films with African-American casts and crews.

Lisa Dunbar, senior curator at the Museum of Florida History, said the movie the Flying Ace is “not just a Florida story,” but a national one.

A traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum will feature the original Flying Ace movie poster at the Museum of Florida History.

The Tallahassee Film Society will be showing two notable documentaries. “Dare Not Walk Alone” is a 2006 documentary covering St. Augustine’s civil rights protests circa 1964. “It’s close to home,” said John Fraser, founder of Tallahassee Film Society, who describes “Dare Not Walk Alone” as a “good positive film on civil rights. ”

“Alley Pat” is a 2009 documentary about an Atlanta radio personality during the 1950s and 1960s. “Alley Pat was a disc jockey ahead of his time,” said Fraser.

In addition to screenings, the festival boasts a film forum, a writing workshop, and a banquet at FAMU’s Grand Ballroom to honor local citizens who have witness the history of African-American films. The film forum will explore how to succeed in the film industry, featuring assistant director and stage manager, Anthony B Major and casting director, Melvin Johnson.

Sharon Saunders, the Tribute to African-American Films Planning Committee Chair said in a press release, “We have been working in conjunction with several local groups to not only pay tribute to a segment of African-American culture, but to highlight FAMU alumni and staff contributions to the entertainment field as we celebrate FAMU’s 125th anniversary.”

Four band members were arrested in the beatings and charged with hazing.

SEE ALSO: Chinese Bloggers Mock U.S. SOPA Outrage

It’s the latest fallout from a scandal that has rocked the university and its famed Marching 100 band. FAMU’s band director had told university police about hazing among the Clones, a group within the band’s clarinet section, a police report said.

The hazing took place in “three or four initiation meetings” that began around Sept. 1 in a house about a mile from campus. Five pledges were lined up in order of their height and “forced to exercise, play music, and were either punched, prepped (slapped with both hands on back) and/or paddled,” police said.

One of the pledges took photos of her bruises and quit after the first meeting. The police report doesn’t say whether she reported the alleged hazing to FAMU officials.

During the initiations, pledges were forced to give money and were pressured to keep exercising “even after exhaustion.”

The four students arrested were: Denise Bailey, 22; Brandon Benson, 23; Hakeem Birch, 21 and Anthony Mingo, 22.

They were booked on a misdemeanor hazing charge and released on bail earlier this week. All denied that hazing occurred or said they didn’t know about it, according to the police report. None had attorneys as of Friday afternoon.

In November, FAMU drum major Robert Champion died hours after the Florida Classic football game in Orlando in what authorities said was a hazing ritual. His death has been ruled a homicide, but no charges have been brought.

The 26-year-old drum major suffered blunt trauma blows to his body while he was aboard a bus and died from shock caused by severe bleeding.

FAMU president James Ammons originally fired band director Julian White after Ammons said he failed to report hazing he knew about. White, who is now on administrative leave, denies that he didn’t do enough.

White previously provided copies of letters to The Associated Press that he sent to Birch and Mingo in November, saying he was suspending them until a hazing investigation by university police was finished.

Three people were charged after alleged hazing ceremonies Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, when Bria Shante Hunter’s legs were beaten with fists and a metal ruler to initiate her into the “Red Dawg Order,” a band clique for students who hail from Georgia.

The Board of Governors – which oversees the state’s 11 public universities – launched its own investigation in November into whether FAMU officials had ignored past warnings about hazing. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement also is investigating the Marching 100′s finances.

(AP) — New autopsy details show a Florida A&M student and band member whose death last month uncovered a hazing culture at the school had extensive bleeding in his back and right shoulder.

The full autopsy released Wednesday shows Robert Champion suffered heavy bleeding in tissue under his skin and over his muscle in his back, upper chest and upper arm. He also had bruising on his chest, abrasions below his waist, vomit in his lungs, crushed fat tissue and a temperature of 102 degrees at the time attempts were made to revive him.

The medical examiner’s office released a synopsis of the autopsy report last week in which it concluded that the 26-year-old Champion’s death was a homicide. The autopsy found that internal bleeding caused from blunt force trauma led to shock.

State and local authorities are investigating the death.

(AP) — Florida A&M’s president will keep his job after the university board of trustees Monday rejected a call from Gov. Rick Scott that James Ammons be suspended while the hazing death of a band member is investigated.

SEE ALSO: Why Isn’t God Listening To Tim Tebow?

The decision comes three days after the state medical examiner ruled that 26-year-old Robert Champion’s Nov. 19 death was a homicide. Officials say he was beaten so severely that he bled internally and went into shock. He died within an hour.

“We will stand firm against outside influence, no matter how well intended,” Solomon Badger, the FAMU board chairman, said during a board meeting that was held by conference call.

Scott said he would abide by the board’s decision.

Ammons and other university leaders have been criticized for not doing enough to stop a culture of hazing within the university’s famed “Marching 100″ band. Band director Julian White has been placed on temporary leave and the board had already publicly reprimanded Ammons.

Students had largely stood by both leaders. Students protested outside the governor’s mansion on Thursday to show support for Ammons, and the president of the national alumni association at a news conference Sunday contested Scott’s involvement and recommend Ammons not be suspended.

Badger said that the board should keep Ammons status unchanged until an investigation with all the “official facts” was concluded. None of the FAMU board members disagreed with Badger.

“I think we all have the number one priority of keeping the university strong as we move through this challenging time,” said Kelvin Lawson, a board member from Jacksonville.

The only action related to the investigations that the board took was to agree to meet weekly for the next day 60 days while the investigations continue. There was scant discussion of the homicide ruling or the opening of a new criminal investigation into the finances of the Marching 100.

Scott said in a statement issued before the meeting that he was not singling out FAMU and called on all universities in the state to examine their hazing and harassment policies. He said he was offering his opinion and counsel regarding Ammons and would abide by the board’s decision.

“I merely suggested it would be wise for Dr. Ammons to step aside until these investigations are completed,” Scott said. “It is up to the FAMU Board of Trustees and Dr. Ammons to determine how to proceed. I have not and will not try to influence their decision.”

Champion died after falling unconscious on a bus outside an Orlando hotel after the school’s football team lost to rival Bethune-Cookman. Witnesses told emergency dispatchers that he had been vomiting.

The medical examiner’s office in Orlando found that Champion had bruises to his chest, arms, shoulder and back and internal bleeding. No charges have been filed.

Champion’s death exposed years of hazing that has plagued the band and left several students injured. In 1998, Ivery Luckey, a clarinet player from Ocala, Fla., was hospitalized with kidney damage after being paddled as part of an initiation to become a member of a group known as “The Clones.” Three years later, band member Marcus Parker was also hospitalized with kidney damage after being paddled.

Ammons, a FAMU alumni, became president in 2007 at a time when the university was under considerable distress. There had been four presidents within the previous six years and an audit in 2007 uncovered 35 findings, including $4.5 million in unaccounted sports tickets and lost equipment. The university was placed under probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Under Ammons’ leadership, the university’s accreditation was restored and its finances improved. An audit done two years later found the university still needed to do a better job at paying bills on time and keeping a closer eye on employee use of state-owned cell phones, but those problems paled in comparison to the previous report.

But hazing continued to be a problem. White has provided letters of suspension issued to dozens of band members for hazing, including many of which Ammons was reportedly provided a copy.

Less than two weeks before Champion’s death, band member Bria Hunter was hospitalized with a broken leg and blood clots in what authorities say was another act of hazing. Three band members have been charged in the beating.

And two days before Champion died, White sent a letter to alumni, urging them not to “return and perpetuate the myth of various sectional names.”

But FAMU alumni have insisted that the problem of hazing is widespread across the country and that too much attention is being focused on their university.

“Name another university president that suspended a president for hazing,” said Tommy Mitchell, president of the FAMU National Alumni Association. Mitchell also went so far as to question “why is that this hazing has gotten so much attention?”

Ammons suspended the band after Champion’s death, dismissed White and expelled four students in connection with the hazing. White was later placed on temporary leave and the students were allowed to attend class after state authorities urged the university not to take disciplinary action before the investigation was complete.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges has warned Scott’s push to suspend Ammons could affect the school’s accreditation because of “undue influence” on the board from outside.

FAMU students used Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social media to spread the word, filing into the grand ballroom to show that they were willing to fight for FAMU. While some students showed up in army fatigues, they ended up taking them off when they realized they might pose a safety issue.

Breyon Love, student body president, a fourth-year business administration student, and a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, led the group of students to Lee Hall to organize their efforts prior to the march. Making sure that they did not march until they had received proper sanction to protest peacefully, the students marched on the sidewalk behind a police motorcade set up by FAMU students and officials.

Alexis Hinton, a sophomore health science student from Pascagoula, Miss., was one of the students in the march. Of the march, she says:

I feel as if the march was meaningful and it made a statement to let everyone know that we care about our university.

Students stood outside the governor’s residence until Scott, who had an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper shortly before, finally emerged with a small group of prominent FAMU alumni, including former Board of Trustees member R.B. Holmes, whom he had been hosting.

As Scott told assembled students that he “[came] from public housing,” students heckled the governor and did not allow him to finish his response. He also claimed he did not know anything about “merging” FSU with FAMU.

After the march, Love went into the mansion and spoke with Governor Scott about the situation for about an hour:

I was really upset with what he was trying to do,” said Love. “He was overstepping his boundaries as governor.

Rick Scott said Thursday he wants the president of Florida A&M University suspended amid multiple investigations spurred by the death of a drum major in a suspected case of hazing.

Scott, who just returned from a seven-day trip to Israel, called the chairman of the FAMU board on Thursday and asked him to suspend James Ammons immediately.

Scott said he doesn’t have any evidence that Ammons did anything wrong, he thinks a suspension is warranted.

“I think it is in the president’s best interest and the school best interest that he step aside,” Scott told reporters as he arrived at Tallahassee Regional Airport. But he said he told Ammons he didn’t think he needed to resign until the investigations into the death of drum major Robert Champion and the FAMU band’s finances are finished.

The board last week discussed suspending Ammons, but instead voted to publicly reprimand him. The board meets again Monday.

It was Scott who ordered Florida’s law-enforcement agency to join an investigation into Champion’s death. The Marching 100 band member died following a FAMU football game last month in Orlando and hazing is suspected in his death.

State law-enforcement officials earlier this week announced they have opened a second investigation into possible criminal violations dealing with the band’s finances.

A spokeswoman for FAMU said she was unaware of the governor’s statement and could not comment immediately.

There are currently two criminal investigations as well as a probe into whether FAMU officials had ignored past warnings about hazing.

This week, police also arrested three band members accused of beating a female member so severely during hazing rituals that they broke her thigh. Tallahassee police said Monday that in hazing ceremonies Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, the three struck Bria Shante Hunter’s legs with their fists and with a metal ruler to initiate her into the “Red Dawg Order.” It’s a band clique for students who come from Georgia.

We need only review the number of young men and women who died before Champion took his final breath.

According to figures tallied by Hank Nuwer, an internationally renowned scholar on hazing, an average of one college student per year has died as a result of hazing since the early 1800s.

In October of 2010, Samuel Mason died while pledging for the Fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon at Radford University in Virginia.

“Just 2 years ago, Donnie Wade died trying to join Phi Beta Sigma at Prairie View A&M, but most people know nothing about that case because America has accepted hazing in fraternities and sororities,” says Walter Kimbrough, president of Philander Smith College and an expert on hazing.

That said, hazing is such a facet of so many fraternities’ and sororities’ cultural norm that ridding them of the practice would be akin to stripping them of much of their identity.

A recent study titled “Hazing in View: College Students At Risk “based on the analysis of more than 11,400 respondents across 53 colleges and universities and more than 300 interviews reveals how accepted hazing is.

Fifty-five percent of students involved in clubs, sports and organizations experience hazing, the study found. Ninety-five percent of the time, these students did not report the incidents. What is more telling is that 25 percent of coaches or organizational advisers knew of the activity. And nine out of ten students who have experienced hazing do not consider themselves to have been hazed, according to the study.

So in the wake of the FAMU tragedy and yesterday’s arrests of three of it’s Marching 100 band members for allegedly hazing Bria Shante Hunter, why do so many young people choose to subject themselves to physical torture that can lead to permanent, physical harm or death?

“Part of it has to do with a strong belief system that it is needed to select, screen, and inculcate the types of members these organizations want, and probably need,” says Gregory Parks, assistant professor of law and hazing expert at Wake Forest University. “For example, many members believe hazing is needed to facilitate commitment to other members and to the organization.”

What is more telling of this strong belief is the number of young people who find hazing acceptable. More than 60 percent of college students believe it is important to tolerate psychological stress while joining an fraternity and 32 percent feel physical pain is an acceptable part of the pledging process, according to “Inside Hazing,” a study conducted by hazing scholar, Susan Lipman, M.D.

The definition of hazing, as explained on Lipman’s website, is “a process, based on a tradition that is used by groups to discipline and to maintain a hierarchy (i.e., a pecking order). Regardless of consent, the rituals require individuals to engage in activities that are physically and psychologically stressful. These activities can be humiliating, demeaning, intimidating, and exhausting, all of which results in physical and/or emotional discomfort. Hazing is about group dynamics and proving one’s worthiness to become a member of the specific group.”

More explicitly, it can mean forcing someone to drink against his or her will, subjecting a pledge to physical pain or emotionally abusing someone to the point of exhaustion.

The method of hazing that took Champion’s life was reportedly a gauntlet of beatings by fellow band members who punished him for dropping a baton during a performance.

Nuwer says the practice is becoming more perverse, making the difference between bullying and hazing less clear.

“You can see the abuse of prisoners of war; the sexting; the texting insults,” Nuwer says. “It seems to go hand and glove with hazing. People are not hiding their sadistic streaks. They are coming out in very public ways and they are not getting the bad feedback from peers that you might have expected some years ago. How else to you explain sodomies at the high school level? How else do you explain a gauntlet where somebody’s fists had to have gone crashing into Mr. Champion’s solar plexus to be able to cause a death? He’s a pretty big guy.”

Before Champion’s death, a former FAMU clarinet player, Ivery Luckey, was hospitalized after reporting he was paddled roughly 300 times in 1998. Another FAMU band member, Marcus Parker, suffered kidney damage because of a beating with a paddle three years later.

What makes Champion’s death and the alleged hazing behind it more disturbing is Luckey’s response to his own severe beating.

“[Hazing] goes on at every university,” Luckey is quoted as saying in a Lakeland Ledger article published on Nov. 22, 1998. “This was pretty much by choice. If you want to be in a fraternity or the cool part of the band, that’s kind of what you do.”

That same article also reports that now fired band director, Julian White, reported Luckey’s incident to university officials after visiting him in the hospital. It makes you wonder if, in fact, White’s warnings were ignored and that he was nothing more than a scapegoat in the aftermath of Champion’s death.

And what about the students who knew about the hazing? Should they be culpable, too? Kimbrough says hazing prevention is not only in the hands of the fraternities or sororities. It is an institutional issue that has to be taken seriously by administrators, deans and faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and most of all, students.

“Most hazing takes place away from campus at odd hours,” Kimbrough says. “Students know about it, but generally subscribe to this “no snitch” philosophy. And that’s why hazing persists.”

Florida A&M’s marching band has suspended all of its performances indefinitely. But suspensions do not seem to stop future hazing incidents from happening. It appears that no matter how many people die or are injured permanently from hazing, the aggressors of hazing become more brazen and barbaric in administering it. And the victims still seem to feel it is OK.

When a reporter asked Bria Shante Hunter, the latest victim of alleged hazing in Florida A&M’s Marching 100 band, why she endured the alleged hazing, she gave a disturbing reply. “So we can be accepted,” she said. “If you don’t do anything, then, it’s like you’re lame.” Three fellow band members have been arrested and charged with all hazing her.

Experts say the only way to stop hazing is to bring serious criminal charges against those who do it.

There are hazing laws on the books in some states. California, for example, has Matt’s Law that allows felony prosecutions when serious injuries or death occurs as a result of hazing. Matt’s Law was named in memory of Matt Carrington, a 21-year-old California State University, Chico student who died in the basement of a fraternity house during a hazing ritual.

Nuwer feels none of these deaths will stop the trend of hazing and says it has the potential to get worse, unless fraternities and sororities know serious jail time is waiting for them.

“I think we are going to start edging towards what the Philippines had which is life sentences for hazing deaths,” Nuwer says. “When that happens, two things will occur: 1) People will turn to true criminals. They would throw bodies into the water. In the Philippines, they have hidden bodies in forests because they knew what the punishments were going to be. 2) [The life sentences] would put fear in people. But, at the present time, with two years maximum for the Florida A&M for Kappa Alpha Psi three years ago being the bench mark [is not enough]. Compare that to 18 years.”

Perhaps the prospect of extensive time, or worse yet, life behind bars would finally convince fraternities and sororities that hazing is not worth their freedom. No charges have been made in Champion’s death. And even if charges are brought against those who helped to caused Champion’s death, it seems unlikely they will serve life sentences.

Robert Champion, on the other hand, is already serving his.
