Academy_Award_Oscar

Black people have long shared a fraught relationship with the Academy Awards. Ever since our first win–Hattie McDaniels’ 1939 Best Supporting Actress victory for her portrayal of Mammy in “Gone With The Wind”–many of us have wondered if being rewarded by the white Hollywood establishment for playing negative or stereotypical roles is really anything to celebrate. The same question nagged at us when Denzel Washington won the Best Actor trophy for his turn as a crooked cop in “Training Day” rather than his portrayal of Malcolm X, and when Halle Berry was named Best Actress for her work in what some considered a stereotypically hypersexualized Black female role.

Text continues after gallery …

This year, with “Precious” nominated for more Oscars than any other Black film in history, we’re compelled to ask again: Just what is the Academy looking to praise us for? Derided by some critics as “poverty porn,” “Precious” tells the story of a morbidly obese, illiterate incest victim living in Harlem with her physically and sexually abusive welfare queen of a mother. Not a whole lot of positivity there.

RELATED: “Precious” Nominated For Six Academy Awards

But uncomfortable though it may be, “Precious” does portray a slice of American life that can plausibly find some counterpart in reality. The same could be said of “Training Day” or “Monster’s Ball.” The problem that we as a people often run into when considering forms of artistic expression is that it isn’t enough for Black film or television characters to be merely plausible or real: We want them to be heroes.

Understandably so. There’s no shortage of negative portrayals of Black people and Black life in the media and entertainment, and to deny that the skewed picture they paint is damaging would be dishonest. But the remedy isn’t to suppress negative images–the remedy is balance. We should redirect our energies toward creating and elevating positive Black films and characters rather than condemning films like “Precious” for depicting us in a poor light. Because, let’s face it, there really are some Black mothers who abuse their children as mercilessly as Mo’Nique’s Mary did Precious. There also really are (or were) Italian mafiosos like Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone, and white serial killers like Charlize Theron’s Aileen Wuornos. Not only do morally reprehensible people of all races exist, they make for compelling, complex, and layered characters. Such characters provide an opportunity for just the type of breathtaking displays of acting talent that Mo’Nique turned in for “Precious.”

RELATED: Writer Says “Precious” Is As Damaging As “Birth Of A Nation”

So yes, Black folks should celebrate if “Precious” wins any of the six Oscars it’s nominated for. For us, the film itself may not have been flattering, but it was as real and as worthy a display of talent as any other less-than-positive work to come before it. Amid the controversy surrounding the Academy’s lauding of “Precious,” we must remember: the villains in our community are as real as the heroes, and they can allow for acting roles as worthy–or more–as so much positivity.

The best choice we can make, then, is not to suppress or deride films like “Precious,” but simply to keep them in perspective.

This is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of. Precious will win because of the ingenious of the director and actors. People win awards because of their ability to act and make us believe that it is real. I understand that and I only hope other african american believe this also. We are no longer halpless and at the mercy of other people (whites).

I live in Baltimore. Sheila Dixon was our First African American Female Mayor. She didnt keep her nose clean and the people around her. She was found guilty of stealing $500 dollars in gift cards for the needy. People have been doing this stuff ( much worse) for years. But, because she is black you have a magnifying wacthing you. You have to keep everything together even the people thats around you. Sometimes they are the ones that will get you fired or worse.

here we go another mamy style oprah type walrus

Well I’m an actor…and I say support it. It’s an award for acting, directing, producing, cinematography, set design, art design, editing…etc etc ect.
Where is the middle ground when it comes to how we are portrayed in film? It’s a slice of life, for better or worse. That story applies to some, not all. Like all films. If we go the other way with a perfect Cosby-style film where all the Black folks are rich and happy, people would surely complain and say that isn’t a true take on the Black experience in America. But for some it is.
It’s a story. A character study. Someone got a chance to tell their story, so why are we putting it down?
And why is Sydney Poitier or Jamie Fox not mentioned in the list of Oscar winners, it makes it seem like the only Black actors who won played antagonists.
SUPPORT BLACK FILM !!!!!! SUPPORT BLACK ACTORS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I support any worth film or worth performance winning an award. It was a fantastic movie and the performances of the actors and actresses are certainly Oscar worthy. Bottom line. If it’s deserving, it should be supported.

Should black people support 3 “6″ (666) mafia for winning a oscar for a song called “Its hard out here for a pimp”?

Should black people support Denzel Washington because he played a role of lesser character as a rogue cop in “Training Day” when his best work was as “Malcolm X”?

Should black people support Halle Berry in “Monster’s Ball” while a white man bones her because in her role she plays a emotionally vulnerable woman?
“Can you make me feel good”?

Why do we have to portray a troubled.. immoral.. character in order to recieve this award? White people dont have to be anybody but themselves in order to recieve this award.

Niggaz like Al Pacino and Rob Deniro have been playing the roles year after year being the same exact person in almost every movie and they dont have to be anything other than themselves or what they are good at.

Why are we celebrating this film? Its like the worst of the worst. Sandra Bulluck is getting awards for playing the savior of another lost black soul.

    Why support this crap?

The message is the only way we get awarded is if we reveal the worst of ourselves non fiction or fiction?

The standard is in your face. I dont care if you are in the buisness or not. Its a disgrace.

Hell no dont support his bulls**t.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

Black people are DUMB for celebrating this BS. Just because it has black people in it doesnt mean its worthy of approval because I suppose these things happen in the black community. There are many cannibals in the white community but do they celebrate Dahmer? Hell no. There are TONS of white serial killers but are they celebrating Manson? Nope! They hold the patent on sexual offenses and beastiality but are they celebrating Caligula or the Marquis De Sade? I think not. And have you noticed that every name I mentioned, dahmer, manson etc..ALL have movies that told their tale, Ummm were any of those ever up for Oscar’s? The white folks keep they shyt on hush but put black people on BLAST and you HOUSE NlGGERS ran to the box office to put money in that white mans pocket and now you are praising him for taking your money to see some shyt you can pick up the right history book and read for FREE OR turn on your damn daily news! Ohhhh but because Mo’Nique big mouth got in the movie and everybody feels so sorry for overweight black girls in the hood its something to celebrate?? Why must WE celebrate the dregs of society?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/kemite4life/ kemite4life

    Celebrate what?

The Academy is among the most RACIST institutions in all of AmeriKKKa. Always has been and always will be.

But after Halle became the first supposed Black actress to win an Oscar and Denzel, the first to win the Best Actor trophy in nearly 40 years, we’ve seen Morgan Freeman, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Three 6 Mafia, Forest Whitaker and by Sunday, Monique, all win Oscars. This in just an eight year span when prior to 2002, only Cuba Gooding, Jr., Whoopi, Denzel and Lou Gosset Jr and Isaac Hayes had won since Sidney Poitier in 1963.

So this is old hat now. And to expand this discussion, white AmeriKKKa has given us thousands of Black elected officials from mayors, city councilmen, governors, congressmen, senators and now even a president. So what again should we get excited about if “Precious” even swept all six categories?

    Not damn thing!

When white people play villains or movies that depict them in a negative light white people don’t get all up in arms they either watch the movie or they don’t, end of story. Every movie won’t be positive because life is not always perfect. Movies are an imitation of life and let us not forget that this movie was based on a book written by a social worker who saw these terrible tragedies first hand. The book was acclaimed for what it showed about the darkest places in the soul but the movie can’t receive the same credit? And when people say “celebrate the movie” I doubt they are condoning the terrible acts committed by the characters but a celebration of African Americans winning the awards for the script, acting, and score.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sunshinehpyness/ sunshinehpyness

if they win that’s good…I will be happy for Monique and Gabby but I’m not celebrating. Celebrate for what?! Ain’t nobody cuttin me a check! I’ve never taken a acting class a day in my life but if I knew I was going to be paid millions….I’ll be the best actress you ever seen. MONEY MOTIVATES…. not to put down the art of acting but I feel we all are capable of acting…..we all do it everyday…when that cop pulls you over and he is walking towards the car; you are rehearsing your script in your head.
I’m still on that natural high about Obama becoming president…..that’s real reality….that REALLY MATTERS.

SHOULD BLACK FOLKS CELEBRATE!? HELLZ YEAH!!! WHY NOT!!!

Now @Deletha_J I can see where u comin from. Because Denzel “HAD TO BE CROOKED BEFORE HE TOOK IT” and Halle Berry “HAD A WHITE MAN POP HER TO GET AN OSCAR” in the words of Jadakiss. But even though that’s some bulls**t….which got OVERHYPED, black people still succeeded regardless.

So if people want to celebrate a Monique and a Gabby victory, regardless of people thinking specifically as to “how” they won it, SO BE IT! I’ll blaze a blunt just for my people gettin they recognition, f**k it!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

HELL NO!!! That movie was a disgusting portrayal which some people call art or art imitating life.
Celebrate what!?!?!? Because black people are in the movie does not mean that we have to support everything black!!!
This movie should be on the shelf and never seen again!!!
How come when there were great movies with great black actors & actresses never get the awards!?!?! There are exceptions like Jamie Foxx’s protrayal of Ray Charles, but what about movies like Malcom X or the Hurricane from Denzel!?!? Those were great movies but he had to play a crooked cop to get the Best Actor award. He did get the Supporting Actor award for his portrayal in Glory.
White people love Gabby because she is fat, nasty, non threatning, basically your Aunt Jemimina role (MAMMY)
Monique is just plain garbage, the typical big fat woman with the big fat mouth!!! Both should be on blast!!!
The NAACP awards should be ashamed of themselves as well giving congrats and awards for this movie and the two main characters in the movie, but hey they gave R Kelly an Image Award a few years back, yeah the notorious pee pissing king!!!
Black people are so in the dark, no wonder the majority of the world do not respect our people.
So I guess we can bring back the coonery and Amos and Andy back to, should we be happy if they got awards as well!?!?!?
I do not support everything black that is crazy!!! The worst thing about it is that Oprah and that transvestite dumba$$ Tyler Perry put their own money to finance this f$cked up film!!!
Straight garbage and to those black people who support this film are garbage as well!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

How about this one, Whoopie won the Oscar for her portrayal in Ghost. At least that was a good movie and she did not sell out in that role!!!
You can talk about Cuba Gooding Jr all you want – at least he played a good decent black man, husband, father, brother, who just wanted to make sure his family was financially secure in Jerry McGuire. Remember who played his wife (Regina King) she was his backbone and he did not play the dirty low down black man in that movie.
Those are two good examples that can show how our black people can be decent members in society without selling out!!!

Pecious: A Grandiose Tributte To the Grotesque

I have not seen the film yet, but plan to do so. I don’t like films that portray Black people in a negative way. I live in Europe and when Europeans see these films they think ALL Black life is this way. I’m constantly saying “thats not really the way it is”. Many of them view Blacks as savages because of the movies. So please make more positive Black movies.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blkaristotle/ blkaristotle

In my opinion, “negative” and “positive” are tangential approaches to the issue. While they create journalistic excitement, they might polarize the black community.

How long will black America “perform” and then wait for white America, in this case Hollywood to define the performance? Black America appears to be so sensitive, reactive, and vulnerable to outside opinion. Reactive, alarmist efforts are better replaced with proactive efforts to construct a New Hollywood, one which “owns” the agenda.

I’m a black man. I encourage us to stop whinin’ and start winnin’ through ownership and loyalty. Stop waiting for white approval and awards. And then complaining. It’s embarrassing to our regal, African heritage to be at the behest of another culture telling us when we did and did not do a “good job.” And if this oscar situation is really a problem, then create a Black Oversight Committee to tell us when and when not to accept certain awards. Had this committee been in place, it could have called in Denzel and Halle and could have instructed them to decline the award in their speeches. Until then accept these occurrences as reflections of our varied realities in the black community.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/n0gar/ n0gar

Jewish Hollywood loves to give us awards for these types of films because it will encourage other negros to make these types of films that help keep blacks in the ‘kept down’ state of mind. This is why Halle won for sexing a white man and doing soft porn. This is why Denzel won as an evil cop -opposite a good, white cop. This is why Three 6 Mafia won with the ‘masterpiece’ of music “It’s Hard Out there for a Pimp!” The song was not even a good rap song let alone something worthy of an Academy Award!

What these Jews are telling black people is: “If you want an award, keep making bulls**t like this that makes you people look like the fools that we want you to look like.” Denzel could not win for Malcolm X because black people LIKE Malcolm X, white people hated what he stood for. If Denzel had won, then THOSE types of films would be encouraged to be made! These Jews don’t want THAT, they want something that takes you mind off of the world and keeps it in your home or hood no more!

When I look at the TV Guide Channel and there over-stating the details of Precious and the impending DVD release of March 9th, it is clear that Oscars will be won. In truth, the movie was at best OK. The acting part, no one deserves an Oscar nomination. I personally thought that Mariah Carey was the best actor in the film, but what do I know?

All these Jews want us to see of ourselves is what they want for us – criminals who think that they are gangsters, pimps/hoes which is what the JEWISH produced and much directed blaxploitation films of the 70′s offered, the emotionally supportive role to the white person or the sexually submissive role to the white man when we know that the opposite is true(white woman going sick over black guys)! If I had been nominated for that, I would not show up. I would pull a Will Smith.

Domestic Violence in the African American community exists. Just as it does in all ethnic communities. I’m troubled by the constant negetive stereotypes that men of color are viewed in as the norm in our society. Yet MEN, we must be held responsible for our actions against our wives & the women we date and set the template for the man our daughters are to marry and our sons want to mirror. “Precious” is a fictional movie yes! But it sheds light on a dark subject that needs to be addressed by all people. The actors, directors and writers deserve recognition for their body of work in educating us as a society. We must learn to come to terms with this ugly truth and deal with it in a constructive manner that will yield a positve result from this labor. And we are to treat violence against men just as serious as it is against women. A slap accross the face/head, a punch, kick or any type of battery must not be view differtly because of who inflicts the assault. Domestic violence is domestic violence, period.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SonHassan/ SonHassan

It’s cool that the movie is considered an oscar,But the subject matter should be addressed. And it’s NOT a black thing,it a global thing, that needs to be left open for further discussion. This is a dark, sensitive and deep-rooted issue.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

This is to Ruffy, did you even see I am Legend!?!?!? Your remark is plain stupid!!! First of all he did try to save his family, but remember they were in a helicopter accident (THINK BEFORE YOU WRITE!!!) Plus him saving the Spanish (NOT WHITE WOMAN & the kid) if you was all alone on this earth, you would want anyone around you – that movie was not race issued but human issued. How about you be in isolation for years, all by yourself, you would want anyone around you — REAL TALK – NOT BS!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sharpsis/ sharpsis

How is the theme of ‘Precious’ any different than the theme in ‘The Color Purple’? Both books were written by black authors and turned into a movie. In ‘The Color Purple’ we thought there was incest, but he turned out to be her stepfather, but still, child rape occured in both, yet one is criticized and the other is not. How many people in our community broke their necks to see Oprah presents ‘The Color Purple’ on stage, yet no criicism. I agree with Timothy365 domestic violence is domestic violence, and child rape occurs across all races and creeds. This just happened to be about black people. I saw a movie called ‘Bastard Out of Carolina’ on HBO around 14 years ago with the same theme, it was based on a true story, not fiction, and it starred white people. Precious is not the first movie of its kind and I am sure it will not be the last..whether it has black people in it or not. Rent ‘Bastard Out of Carolina’ and tell me that isn’t any different than ‘Precious’, or ‘The Color Purple’

Sorry to disappoint you people, but “Precious” is closer to home for some of us. I grew up in an environment like that and the film moved me to rage and tears at one point; and back to laughter – which is what it was like growing up. What is just fiction to some, is real life to others. I hope the movie wins for every catagory nominated (wishful thinking lol); but above all I hope it gets people to do something about the situation that some of us had to actually endure.

Through out my life I knew black people who were abused and gave them advices on where and whom to go for help to get away.Black people need to stop fronting as if we are perfect all the time because no humans (races/colors) on this earth is. If anyone think that Precious is negative toward our people they obviously never watch a movie where white characters were abused (and there were plenty). There’s good and bad in black communities every where and our people need to face the truth that the children of our future should be protected 100% + or we will pay a very high price in the future for it. Complaining about negative characters in movies is not going to help us because action speak louder than words……help a child/children from an abusive home and you may just started something that will spread in your community and beyond. It take a village to raise a child!

    @amourshoes
I agree with you and most people forgot that Al Pacino’s character Scarface was hated by the Cuban community in the US on the ground that the movie made it look like all Cubans were bad, drug dealers and ruthless cold blooded killers. That was far from the truth which is why black people have to remember we’re not the only one crying out about negative role models/characters in movies. On negative white characters in movies, I can give an example like Richard Gere playing a dirty ruthless cop in “Internal Affairs” with (famous a Cuban actor) Andy Garcia’s character playing the good guy after him. Never heard no white people complained about this and sure enough most Cubans were happy that the good guy was a Cuban actor. Maybe if Hollywood balance things out with more positive black actors roles against negative roles then our people would be much happier. We have black directors like Spike Lee, John Singleton and Tyler Perry to name a few making movies with good and bad black characters but we do need more black directors so support the up and coming new directors in your community or beyond trying to get ahead and change things. About Hattie McDaniel winning the Oscar for “Gone With The Wind”, even thought she was the maid it did not matter to most like me who could see she was the one the one who was calm and strong and kept everyone sane and safe. Between her and the abusive mother in Precious who would we rather be with??

white people are educated on black people by watching TV. stupid as hell but its true. why you think they feel are we do is sell drugs and gangbang and shoot each other.. cuz thats whats put out on the bube tube. white people say they love this movie. why? it ended wit a fat black girl wit two kids on welfare trying to get an G.E.D. but if you stop them on the street they talk bad about anyone on welfare. get a clue people. this was an average movie at best. seems like the only way black people can win the award is if they playing dumb parts. denzel had to be a crooked cop. Cuba had to be a retard. Holly had to literly f**k on scence. and jamie had to play another famous black man. plz understand the world you live in.

Precious is a good movie with a powerfull story that many can relate to, regaurdless of race. I hope that it does well at the Academy Awards ceremony. However the issue isn’t weather or not there are negative black people in the world, but are their any positive. True DameDivalicious no race is perfect in any way, however most races/colors are depicted in film as positve and negative while recieving awards for both. Al Pacino did not win his oscar for Scarface, he wasn’t even nominated, he won it for his role in “Scent of a Woman.” Nor did Gere recieve his oscar for his role in “Internal Affairs”, he won one for “An officer and a Gentleman.”

It comes down to what Hollywood finds as a powerfull performance, that for some reason black actors are more believable in stereotyipcally negative roles than those that are more positive or one that highlights political and social strugles in America. From James Earl Jones role in “The Great White Hope” to Denzel in “Malcom X” and “The Great Debators”, it seems that if you show that America had its ups and downs then its a less beleivable role. Its ok to talk about your own black issues but not cool to address the issues that we have as a Nation.

We live in the best country in the world, and because of that we seem to be in default mode. Instead of finding more ways to improve ourselves as a whole, we are satisfied in saying “hey it could be worst.” Instead of talking about issues that face the nation as a whole we say “get over it.” The first step in solving aur issues is addressing them, then finding ways to rectify them. The issue isn’t should we celebrate if “Precious” wins because it should, the issue is can a Black actor win for more positve and less stereotyped roles in film.

lol lol lol you know i read thes comments on these post… and sooo many people are tireeed of racism yet are racist themselves.. u know not everything is racist when dealing with color.. black OR white…with the thousands of movies from low budget to blockbuster made every year there are white folks who play the same type of roles that were played in “precious”… people always say what should have won an award or what was a great movie… do u realize that is ur opinion 1 out of billions of people… but the biggest problem is PEOPLE themselves of all races…. they rather watch movies like precious than an educational movie… stop blaming “white america” as some of u say… and blame urselves lol hypocrites lol

Just like BLACKS were given a pat on the back with awards for Training day and Monsters ball, this last Oscars was all about WOMEN getting that pat on the head. Precious won for being a drama with females, which is a huge tool to sell in America, and Hurt Locker won because it’s James Cameron’s EX-WIFE! Hurt Locker, although a good movie, can’t hold a candle to Avatar’s accomplishments. So this was the pat on the head to women, not just to black people.

Yes the movie was exceptional Mo Nique’s portrayal was dynamic. Aint nothin wrong with a movie that shows the ugly truth and reality in corners of society. It’s telling a lot of folks from abused backgrounds you’re not alone and keep hope in your life.

Spicey2545, DameDivalicious, Timothy365, Sharpsis, and rpcjr72, I feel yall, hands down.

To the haters: How much do you do to and for your communities to make it so that we are raising children who will be these positive role models you all speak of? Alot of people have so much to say about this movie and are the same people who think it was ok for T.I. to have that billboard posted advertising his jeans with a female in a suggestive position. That teaches our kids what? How soon do we forget. So you can tell all the rest of that flack you that you have to say to the paychecks all of those actors are cashing. Because this is one time when…..shhhhhhhh…is the sound of nobody caring what you think!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ronmitch3/ ronmitch3

No! Why ? Black people need to stop hating on our people (black men). When will it stop?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Kashi101/ Kashi101

its a real problem that affects people from all walks of life and all colors. the movie was well made and the acting was superb. it deserves an award for that. forget the gritty horrific nature of the film. that’s not what the award is about.
if you want to speak out against something, speak out against all the forms of abuse going on in this country. read the statistics. they are appalling.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

No…that crap shouldn’t be celebrated because it’s another stereotypical role…tyler perry said it best…’i probably won’t be back to the oscars.’ you get tired of seeing the same roles, the welfare recipient, drug dealer, slave, ho, drug addict, and an obese teenager…i don’t look at oprah the same way…because in all her movies…there are lesbian scenes, a child being beaten or raped or both, a slave that is being raped and beaten or both…with a negative depiction of the black man…and how monique got up there and said ‘it’s not about politics’ was almost comical! That bulls**t was nothing but politics…an ignorant welfare recipient that is abusing and letting her child be abused…only to have the white woman come and save the day! thank god for actors such as angela bassett, jada pinkett smith and gabrielle union and the list goes on who have turned down stereotypical roles like that because that is not what our people are about…even though cultures and countries around the world view african-americans as just that…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/headraider/ headraider

I did not read the article, I only read the asinine question. Why is it considered selling out or stereotypical, if it speaks to reality? The self-righteousness on this blog is over the top.

I’m sorry to inform you, but the story of Precious is not a stretch of any sorts. I think the reality is, some of you have become so mainstream, that you don’t want white people knowing what really goes on in the black community. Well you shouldn’t feel like that, because, this goes on in all communities not just black. However, to act all bourgeois is not only self serving but shows a sense of shame to be black. I’m black, and I know we have big problems in our community, a lot of which are self-created. But I will not act as if, we live in a glass house and this type of thing just is beneath black people. Come on!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

    @headraider

who’s reality? yours? speak for yourself… because it sure is hell isn’t mine!!believe it or not there are millions of african-americans that don’t or have never ‘related’ to this s**t.. it’s not being self righteous it’s’ a known fact that the percentage of black women that are earning advanced degrees outweigh any other race…. there are more african-american men that are in college than in prison…but you never hear about that because society likes to play up the negative stereotypes that have went out of fashion for decades now…no one is saying that ‘precious’ doesn’t happen but this is not the ONLY story in our community…which seem to be the only ones that win awards…at least tyler perry shows both sides of the spectrum…the stereotypical roles….then the professionals…the lawyer, the doctor, the professor, the teacher, the engineer, the family man, the good husband, the artist….THERE ARE GOOD AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN THAT ARE HARDWORKING AND GOOD HUSBANDS…and yeah…one should aspire to rise above the negativity that society has defined our race for so long…and there’s nothing wrong with that or ‘self righteous’ about that. as a race we have moved past this crap…no one is saying stories like this doesn’t happen…but why is this the ONLY ones that are ‘recognized’ and ‘awarded’ or ‘celebrated’? and i don’t care…i don’t look at oprah the same way at all..every one of her movies is either about the abused slave, lesbian scenes, the abused woman, and the obese teenager…with a negative depiction of the black man! what the hell is her problem? again…THERE ARE HARDWORKING, FAMILY ORIENTED AND PROFESSIONAL RICH AND POOR BLACK MEN IN THIS WORLD!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mineisyours12/ mineisyours12

why not celebrate that someone won an award for their acting. Wouldn’t is be worse if they didn’t win?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

no…it would be the same bulls**t…and you wonder why other cultures…that know nothing of the race…view us as ‘inferior’ and it’s okay for ceo’s to compare the first lady to a motherf**kin chimp and it’s okay for artist to say racially insensitive things only to pass it off as a ‘preference’ and it’s okay for a grinch looking mutha of a radio personality to call a group of black college students…’nappy headed hoes’…and what is so disturbing is that some of us have accepted this crap…so you guys keep supporting this crap here? it’s like the generation before us with the civil rights movement and black pride didn’t mean s**t!!! they wasted their time…because it’s like we are mentally moving backwards!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/headraider/ headraider

    @ Gail

By me saying the depiction is authentic and a reality, in no way takes away from any positive achievements black people are making. What this movie should do is expose the short comings in our community, so we purge stories like Precious and other disgraceful realities out. I don’t share your approach, but I understand your position. Is it hard to watch, is it hard to let strangers see your dirty laundry? Yes, of course it is, but I don’t accept that by taking that strong medicine we are somehow harmed, rather I suppose we begin to heal. Shame can be a useful motivator.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

that’s my whole point…this is NOT the reality of most of us..what dirty laundry? yes…it’s okay to shed light on horrific things that happen in the community…but the only thing i’m saying is show both sides…the same you some people can’t relate to being ‘bourgeoisie’ if you want to call it that…most of us don’t and will never relate to movies like precious, training day, american gangster, and monster’s ball…because unlike that foolish ass director told the media @ cannes…’this is not OUR story’ he needs to speak for himself…and oprah should speak for herself…because if art imitates life…they need serious psychological help…all of a sudden out the blue you make a movie from a novel that is 15 years old? i mean i just don’t understand oprah at all…it’s like she has this thing against black men…in all of her movies…the depiction is no less than an animal..so you guys continue to support and let her promote ‘shedding light’ on the social ills in our community…but just know that she nor that idiot ass director nor sapphire speaks for the majority of us!

I agree it is amazing how we as a people keep feeding the beast. Do not get me wrong I am glad that we get our props every once in a while. It is up to us as a people to change the way that we look at things and stop being so offended so easily. Peace and Prosperity
