NEW YORK — Rihanna on Friday described the horror she felt as her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown was biting and punching her during a violent argument in February, saying she saw “no soul in his eyes.”

“There was no person when I looked at him,” the 21-year-old singer recalled during portions of an interview with Diane Sawyer airing on ABC’s “20/20″ and, earlier, “Good Morning America.” ”He had no soul in his eyes. Just blank.”

Brown was arrested Feb. 8, hours after he was accused of beating Rihanna after the two argued over another woman. The singer later pleaded guilty to felony assault.

In the interview, Rihanna, who is no longer with Brown, described him as “definitely my first big love.” She said their relationship was intense.

“The more in love we became, the more dangerous we became for each other — equally as dangerous,” she said. “It was a bit of an obsession almost.”

The attack occurred in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park neighborhood as Brown drove a rented sports car. She said it was triggered when she saw a text message on his phone from another woman and confronted him about it. She said he lied about it and “I wouldn’t drop it.”

A search warrant affidavit filed in the case stated that Brown hit, choked and bit Rihanna and tried at one point to push her from the car.

“It was ugly,” she said.

During the beating, the singer said she had no idea how it would end: “That’s all I kept thinking the whole time, ‘When is it going to stop? When is it going to stop?’”

Brown was sentenced to five years’ probation, six months of community labor and a year of domestic violence counseling after he pleaded guilty to felony assault.

Rihanna said that, even after her physical wounds had healed, she felt embarrassment and shame.

“You start thinking, ‘What could I possibly have said to make him hit me and do this?’ … I didn’t talk about it to anyone. To no one. Not my friends, not my family. I didn’t want people looking at me and feeling sorry for me, like, ‘There goes the victim,’” she said.

Rihanna warned other women facing domestic violence to not let themselves become blinded by love. She also said she regretted going back to Brown, saying it sent the wrong message to her fans.

Brown, 20, has apologized to fans and has said he has repeatedly apologized to Rihanna for the attack.

Despite the beating, Rihanna said she still cares about Brown.

“I don’t hate him at all,” she said. “I actually love and care about him and I’m concerned about him doing well. I want him to do well — have a great career, have a great life, and grow up. Just take this as something that you had to go through to grow up and learn.”

Rihanna’s interview coincides with the debut of her new single, “Russian Roulette,” from her upcoming album, “Rated R.”

I STILL believe she is LYING about WHAT really HAPPEN. And SHE don’t HAVE a SOUL because SHE want WOMAN up to HER on WRONG doing. The NEWS-MEDIA got SOME people JUMPING On that BAND-WAGON and NOT FACE-ING FACTS that Rihanna STARTED the FIGHT and BEAT on Chris Brown FIRST. HER life style is the same as HIS and BOTH of them CAME up WITH there MOTHER’S get’ing ABUSE. SO WHY would THEY think SHE wouldn’t GET mad AND HIT first. If you REALLY listen to HER she is TELLING on HERSELF(I WOULDN’T LET IT GO.) The TEXT MESSAGE started it all…and she LIED when the woman ASK-had it ever HAPPEN before and SHE LIED and SAID NO but then when the report was put UP then she EXPLAIN. I DO NOT AGREE-with NO MAN NOR WOMAN being VIOLENT toward eachother. So STOP acting LIKE MEN don’t DIE at the HANDS of a WOMAN because they DO and STOP UPHOLDING one(WOMEN)to DOWN the OTHER(MAN). FAIR is FAIR,RIGHT is RIGHT,WRONG is WRONG and DOMESTIC VIOLENCE come from BOTH MAN and WOMAN.

This story is very bias. I encourage u guys to actually watch the interview. As young women who accept this behavior, a man assaulting a woman, you should be ashame of yourself and need to change your way of thinking. And as a man that defends Chris Brown’s action, you need to change your way of thinking also, for a strong man does not hit a woman, he recognise that the situation is not ideal and walk away.No one has the right to hit another person.
I am sadden by the realisation that i live in a world where the viticms are blamed or ignored. How many of us as woman that caught our partner in a lie and won’t ‘drop it’ because our partner won’t tell the truth. Men we can handle the truth, let us decide what we should do with the truth. Am I to expect my partner to physically abuse me because he can’t take confrontation and then accept it?
I was a fan of both Rihanna and Chris Brown because they are great singers and performers. Both Rihanna and Chris Brown have obligations to there fans to not act like a**es. Love and pride sometimes make us compromise who we are, and this is what happened to both these star. Although it is a private issue, it is out, so they both owe us great actions and effort to combat domestic violence.

I am so sick of her! I wish she would just go somewhere and sit her big head ass down somewhere. She need to tell what she did and stop acting like she is so innocent. S**t happens. Get over it and move on. She aint no role model. I see why he slapped her. Maybe he was trying to fix her ugly hairstyle from lookn all crazy. Maybe he thought something was in her ugly weave.

  • 11-9-2009 8:04 am

Fo’ head refuses to tell what she did… People dont just “blackout” over arguing.

Blacking out generally comes from PROVOCATION!

  • 11-8-2009 10:28 pm

she is just on here because her new album is coming out women that like to hit men and then scream battered. save that for women who really is going thru

  • 11-8-2009 10:26 pm

Maybe he had no soul in his eyes because she sucked it all out of him. The girl does appear to be much of a succubus after all….. ;-)

  • 11-8-2009 6:09 pm

Maybe he finally went da hell off on her AFTER she decided it was ok for her to pass a few licks but not TAKE any back besides this is old news her 5 minutes of fame and pleading for the world to see her as oh so innocent she needs to get over herself and move on and maybe she learned from this.

  • 11-8-2009 5:44 pm

can i please be the first in line to slap this trick? cant stand people who act like they are so innocent knowing d*mn well they arent. trying to put somebody else on blast just because your album is about to come out…sad. how about putting yourself on blast too while you’re at it…

I agree with the writer’s comment. As a woman we have always been protected by this “boys dont hit girls” teaching. I feel that it is about time that as women we take responsiblity for our actions. I think she should stop riding the self pitty train and own up to her part in the assault. Men are stronger than women by nature in most cases and if you start a fight you must be prepared for what comes with it. I have two boys and I would be outraged if they abused a woman. But also I would be outraged if they were injured by a woman who hid behind males don’t hit females. Being a woman is not a free pass to assault a man. This whole incident is sending the wrong message to our youth, both male and female. This type of behavior is not alright under no circ**stances. When is a man alllowed to defend himself against an attack? No he did not have to be as brutal as it appears that he was but we still don’t know all the details. I believe that we should give him some credit for not exposing all of her dirty laundry as she is doing to him. She has continued to thrive in her career and he is left holding the bag of shame. It’s not fair.

Didn’t this whole thing start w/Chris & Rhi walkin down the red carpet as singles and not as a couple? They seemed like friends not officially in a monogomous relationship. Didn’t she get jealous about Chris paying attention to every other woman that worked for his attention?
There’s still some details missing to this story. What does he have to say about that night?

  • 11-8-2009 1:48 am

Did she say what happened that started the fight?

  • 11-7-2009 5:22 pm

I really respected her honesty and I thought it was a very mature interview. Glad she is doing well and has moved on. I still love Chris Brown and I hope he gets his s**t together.

  • 11-7-2009 4:00 pm

I don’t even wanna get married after seeing all of this

    marraige is for suckers!

I’d rather stay single, and spend money on my self!

  • 11-7-2009 2:26 pm

I hope my daughter doesn’t become a victim of domestic violence..I’m going to keep it 100 with her and let her know about things like this so that she is well educated and knows what to do if (God forbid) it happens to her..
