I think that since Vh-1 loves to honor hip hop every year, it’s time that we think a little more carefully about how they might do their jobs effectively. Don’t get me wrong, much of the greatness of hip hop should be celebrated, and having such a powerful awards show gives rappers yet another chance to be on TV.  The added exposure creates money-making opportunities, and I’m always down for that.

But let’s be real:  Is the entire hip hop industry really worthy of being honored all the time?  Should every popular artist or well-known song be celebrated, or should some be maligned?  To say that every impactful group or song in the history of hip hop is worthy of an honor is like saying that we should celebrate Adolf Hitler’s birthday just because he was famous.

Text continues after gallery …

So, to help Vh-1 out on this, I thought I would come up with my own awards show.  I call it the “Dr. Boyce Watkins Hip Hop Dishonor Awards,” going to every song and/or artist that has disrespected or undermined progress within the African American community.   Here are the nominees:

1) NWA for the creation of gangsta rap: To show you just how much of a conflicted soul I am, NWA is actually my favorite group of all time.  As a rebellious teenager, I loved what they brought to the table, and I’ve expressed that in other articles.  But I must also be critical of myself by saying that my appreciation for NWA’s art is overwhelmed by the guilt I feel for the fact that this group inspired a multi-billion dollar industry that makes a profit by teaching black men to be thugs and black women to be hoochies.  So, as of today, I am going to give NWA the Self-Destruction Award and disavow at least some part of my love for their music (give me some time though, it’s sort of like dismantling a bad bank).

2) Black Entertainment Television (BET): BET must be acknowledged for being the channel through which the most poisonous and ruinous forms of entertainment have been transmitted to the black community.  If toxic hip hop was the dope, BET was the dope man.  Bob Johnson made a billion dollars off this deal with the devil, and in the end, he completely lost his soul.  The fact that Johnson’s wife, Sheila, had the audacity to go public and say that she is ashamed of what BET has become only adds insult to injury.  Sorry Sheila, I don’t believe you.  Give the money back and then perhaps your critique might have some credibility.  That’s like robbing a bank, keeping the money and saying that you will never do it again.  So, the Most Dishonorable Media Outlet in America Award goes to Black Entertainment Television.

3) Lil Wayne for Wanting to have sex with every girl in the world: Did we not learn anything from the experiences of Eazy-E and Magic Johnson?  It would be my dream that for every song we write about having sex, we write another song about kids without daddies, or nasty venereal diseases.  The desire to have sex is a natural part of our human lifeblood, but abusive and irresponsible sexual behavior should not be taught to our kids.  I have some degree of respect for Weezy’s lyrical abilities and business acumen.  I also give major props to the solid music produced by Young Money, even standing up to support Drake against criticism by my friends like Marc Lamont Hill. But I have almost no appreciation for the fact that Wayne encourages other young men to be irresponsible in their choices.  I have no doubt that Lil Wayne is a genius, which is part of what frustrates me the most.  The only thing worse than an unintelligent black man is a brilliant black man who is smart enough to convince us that he’s stupid.  So, The Dishonorably “Ignant” Negro Award goes to Lil Wayne.

4) Hypocritical Schizophrenic of the decade award – Ice Cube: OK Cube, let me get this straight.  First, you start off as 100% gangster, saying that “Life ain’t nothing but b*tches and money,” but you turn around 20 years later and have a lyric in which you complain about young rappers by saying that “All you rap about is p*ssy and money.”  Then, right after leaving NWA, you suddenly become a non-pork eating, assalamu alaikum Muslim, and then years later go back to making gangsta rap where you are calling women b*tches and hoes, and bragging about shooting other black men.  If that’s not enough, you then start making family movies (‘Are We There Yet?’ and ‘Barber Shop’), while putting out gangsta rap albums at the same time.   But again, perhaps I am as hypocritical and confused as Ice Cube, because he actually happens to be my favorite artist.  Similar to the great Tupac Shakur, Cube reminds us that a great artist can also be a very complex human being.  So Cube, you are the Dishonorably Conflicted Schizophrenic of this year’s show.

5) Clear Channel and all the other major media companies that are buying up urban radio stations and playing nothing but garbage all day: Most of the hip hop we hear on the radio doesn’t represent the essence of the genre.  Since the telecommunications industry was deregulated during the Bush Administration, many smaller urban radio stations have been turned into little capitalist drones connected to the same musical brain.  They are told to play the same crap repeatedly and to drain the station of any meaningful or intelligent dialog.  In other words, the end result is a massive corporate brainwashing exercise of the entire African American community.  I am hopeful that President Obama opens more doors to black-owned media and pushes the FTC to show added respect for diversity within this industry.  So, the Dishonorable Media Conglomerate Award goes go Clear Channel and Big Radio.

So those are the nominees for the 2010 Dr. Boyce Watkins Hip Hop Dishonor Awards.  You might have nominees of your own, and I’d love to hear them.  We should certainly celebrate the greatness and cultural contributions of hip hop music, but we must also recognize the fact that we’ve got to do better.  Unfortunately,  I must admit that among those who need to do better, I am at the top of the list.  I am personally going to try to become more positive.

Pretty good points there…I don’t agree on the first point, though. NWA can’t really be to blame. there were hundreds of gangsta rap groups out there at the time..NWA just got the $$$ and the fame as one of the first.

In other words, they were just the ‘lucky’ ones.

I agree on all other points though..good stuff!

lol damn you tore into Cube, but I don’t agree with it, although I fully see where you are coming from. Look, Cube was 20, stuck in the goddamn hood where people were getting lit up by bullets left and right by the minute!!! He probably didn’t think he’d ever see (let alone LIVE to) a day where he’d become a successful, black man, and even have a solid family structure, with a decent black woman??!!!??? How many of us, CURRENTLY, can even accomplish that, with less pressure on us, and even more opportunity than was available for people like Cube, back then? No one thinks that’s even possible today, even with so many advantages, and even if they didn’t come from that situation, so cut the guy some slack. Dude woke up, and realized that life doesn’t end with the ghetto, and it can be wonderful if you change your attitude. We should be lucky if more black men, and black women like his wife, could wake up the same way. If you hate Cube, throw Master P, Jay Z, and any other guy formerly pushing violence and drugs on the nation, but are doing ‘non-stereotypical’ things, in their ADULTHOOD. For that matter, you should slay every rapper out there who has a wife, kids, home, and raps about things he does not do, nor a live he even lives- whether or not he ever did live it.

Ice Cube deserves the criticism for his hypocrisy, along with quite a few others. Even back then, their so-called “expression” was silly and simple. I grew up in the hood as well, but I didn’t glorify it or try to “rep” it. All I wanted to do was get out of it alive and make something of myself. The problem is that, by the time gangsta rap took off, people like Ice Cube were long gone from the hood, but didn’t have the creativity to rap about anything else besides killing other black men or denigrating black women. He, and many that came along with him, were in their 30s and already wealthy when they were making some of that garbage. To be honest, the majority of rappers are nothing like, nor have they ever lived the life that they try to portray, and once they can no longer make money off cooning and buffooning around like fools, they criticize others. If we had any sense collectively as a people, we would have stopped supporting gangsta rap a long time ago and spared ourselves countless lives lost.

sometimes when we are in situations we cant see ourselfs out of that situation, thats all we know so thats all we can talk about and for a label to pay us to say what we feel im sure feels great as the money builds, one goes on tours around the world and interviews with well educated, very intelligent people, one learns and seeks out knowledge the inevitable happens you grow and mature that doesnt mean your past is erased.im 36 and was a rebelious teen and young adult and am not nearly who i use to be but i sometimes talk about my past and even share a laugh or two or three whats wrong with that?the record labels are the ones who seek out the mc with all the controversial lyrics

Maybe we need to have a Writers “Dishonor” Show starring DR. BOYCE!!

Whether they sing it or rap about it, you can still disrespect anyone if you want to. Why come down on rap just because you don’t like it? Or because you think you so much better than the next man who writes and does hip Hop?

To each their own. Keeping in mind that if there was not a market in Hip Hop then they would not exist. So if you do not like it, don’t buy it!

I don’t see anyone blaming label owners who actually put the music out. So if you are going to blame black rap artists then you also have to blame the white label owners who are really the ones making money off rap music. If you don’t like it turn it off & don’t buy it.

You guys can’t be serious. the only thing that I agree with is BET. Now first of all NWA made the government see what is really happening in the hood with the police brutality etc. Yes I believe they should be honored because they opened the eyes to what is really going on. As far as Ice Cube goes, I used to think the same thing but you know what, when he started with NWA he was young, black, and angry. He wasn’t married then with children. People get more mature when they get older and sometimes they don’t. I think it’s great that he was making kids and family oriented movies. But that love for Hip hop doesn’t go away so what if he wants to continue making music. It’s his money and his choice. As for Lil Wayne I can’t stand him anyway so no comment on that

You must be joking, Dr. Watkins. Some of us “black men” do not need a rap group to teach us how to be thugs. Many of us have been shaped to become thugs from our environment and not music or movies. The public and media may glorify so-called “gangstas” in motion pictures and recording artists who portray thugs to create a marketable image. We all know the reality is that street crime existed well before the negative portrayals became popular.

NWA Did Not Start nor Invent Gangsta Rap, for anyone Old Enough to know that Schooly D from Philly was Rhyming like that long before NWA and wasn’t called Gangsta Rap, there was no label for it at the time 84-85. He was just Rhymin’-Hip Hoppin! Hip Hop only got all these nonsense labels once the media/white people caught win of what we were doing and we like FOOLS accept these labels for OUR MUSIC And GIFTS the we Give The World!! And Let’s not forget King Tee The Great Not being Honored! He should have been honored long b4 a bunch of so-called honorees- long B4 NWA! I bet if you ask Cube who had the most influence on him, he will say King Tee and DJ Pooh was his DJ. I AM HIP HOP!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Real_bumbleclot/ Real_bumbleclot

I agree with the BET and radio statement but the rest is bulls**t.

With the Ice cube statement, I got an example for that. I listen to Trick Daddy a lot, even tho he talks about hoes and dope dealing, that’s not all he talks about. He also talks about the bad side of dope dealing, the struggle black americans go thru, he even make songs to up lift black kids and black women and you guaranteed to hear him talk about this on all his cd’s.

Now I also listen to Too Short and all he talk about is pimping, hoes, and money. You see its a difference in talking bout something and all you talk about is 1 thing. That’s what Ice Cube was addressing. Its cool to talk about hoes and money but don’t let it be the only thing you talk about.

That’s why you hear the same people on the radio, cause they all talk about the samethang, if you got anything else to talk about, you might as well go underground. Which is the only hip hop I support, f**k mainstream hip hop.

Good article and excellent points, being from Miami and watching the show I too was disappointed. I share similar views on the current state of hip-hop and its advertisement to our youth. However, at the end of the day it is the parents responsibility to raise their children with values and morals so they will be able to discern the difference between garbage and art. For those who defend the negativity that is present in rap music today, it is your choice to like what you like…just like I have the choice not to expose myself to such foolishness.

Right on about Ice Cube! He needs to stay consistent. No man can serve two masters. Seems as though, Cube will adapt his style according to what’s paying. I think his “exploitation” of the Muslim theme is tantamount to Mase getting into Church. These dudes should be exposed for the hypocrites that they are and I applaud Dr. Watkins for pulling his card.

Then I say, replace Cube with Tupac! Tupac tried to leverage his Black Panther’s mom association, with being a smart, intelligent brother, coming out of Digital Underground. Then he went super Gangsta, then went playing the hoes route, then tried to kick knowledge, and then incited a national east vs west fight that ended with not only himself getting killed, but Biggie too. PUT TUPAC ABOVE CUBE for biggest nutjob in rap. At least Cube made something of himself, what did Tupac get for his ramblings- a bunch of people killed.

I agree with the Doc. But I’d like to add some catagories as well:
First the catagory for Hip Hop’s “Undeserved Fame Award” goes to 1) Nikki Manaj. She came out of nowhere, she has no real talent and jacked her swagg from lil kim, grace jones, and Lady Gaga. She went from being a butched out lesbian wearing baggy pants and hoodies to pink wigs and push-up bras. wtf?
    2) Soulja boy!!??..I still dont know what a “yuuahh” is..nuff said. 3) Rianna..no real vocal ability and has the most boring perfomance ever! 4) Wackkaflockka (I cant even spell his stupid name right let alone understand his flow) smmfh! 5) I know some folks will get mad @ this next nominee: Gucci Mane! Sounds like he has two of those big wooden african beads stuck up his nose with nothing real to talk about except the color of his “ice” and how much head he gets and how much weight he moves..nothing I can relate to its mindless bulls**t lyrics that only dumb hood niggas and hood rats can relate to. 6) DRAKE (Fake)..just a robotic image of Wayne. He’s an actor and should stick to that or come up with his own style. I could go on but the next catagory is: The “Sambo Awards”. given to great Black actors and actresses but for demeaning roles. Halle Berry, for a naked s**t in Monster’s Ball, Denzel (Though I love Denzel) for his portrayal of a crooked dope dealing and snorting black cop in “Training Day”, and Mo’nique for her portrayal of an african american abusive psychotic mother, who allows her daughter to have incest and gets pregnant by her father, in “Precious”. There are others but you get the point. And those are my additional categories for the “Dishonor Awards”.

Doc finally writes something I agree with. Hip hop has been in an on-going battle with itself for decades now. I should say “rap” and not hip hop because hip hop is the cradle that holds rap along with the graffiti, breakdance and its own style culture. But hip hop has now become the generic term for rap, but I digress. The topics are on the money. NWA definitely created the gangsta culture that we can’t seem to get away from. I would have respected them more if they were to later disavow that lifestyle in order to save their own fans from falling into those same pitfalls. They claimed they were just rapping about how they grew up as a way to inform people that life is hard for people in the ‘hood and they chastise city, fed and government officials and politicians allowing things to be that way. But once they got paid, they and everyone associated with the genre seem to want to stay and glorify that decadent and murderous lifestyle rather than trying to move away from it.

BET, the less said about that minstrel show, the better.

Im an Ice Cube fan but I was always disappointed at how hypocritical he is, jumping back and forth from deadly lyrical rapper to self-righteous family man and back to self-righteous old skool rapper trying to reclaim his throne.

And actually Dr. Boyce if I may correct you, the deregulation of radio stations was during the Clinton era not the Bush jr era. The Telecommunications Act of 1996. You may be thinking of the Telecommunications Act of 2005 that mainly concerned internet and phone services.

I am a child of the ghetto, dope dealer and all that s**t listened to it all, I wanted money man and to get out, It was already there I didnt need a song I just needed to walk outside. Now I have 2 sons and a daughter in college, One son was valedictorian so it was not the music it you as a person. “Historically, Black Entertainment Television (BET) has been a beacon of excellence for African Americans, highlighting the many nuances of just how beautiful our black is. In recent years, the network has fallen short to maintain the integrity of some of its programming. This group is designed for those who are fed up with the negative light in which BET allows SOME of us portray us. BET must raise the bar and enforce programming which portrays African American’s in a first-class manner. Our people are better than all the *beeping* and other inappropriate behaviors portrayed on the June 28, 2009 BET Awards Show (as well as previous and other shows/programming). We can no longer expect the leaders in the African American community to come to our defense on issues of inequality, injustices, and ignorance if we continue to perpetuate the exact behaviors that lead to the negative perceptions – which are often times at the core of these accusations. We are intelligent, integral, inspiring, and innovative people; the network needs tougher policies in place to ensure THAT is being portrayed.”-FB Group

“BET is not run by a black man any longer and it shows. Now it glamorizes or sensationalizes activities that are criminal, degrading, sexist, stereotypical, or [prejudice].”-Petition to change BET

“Black Entertainment Television’s exploitation of a powerful race of people is disgrace. This vision of us becomes impressionable to other people of other races, and it [embeds] itself quickly into their minds.”

As you can see, lots of people are tired of the misrepresentation of Black People on BET. We want to take BET out of the hands of Viacom and back into the hands of Black people.

So Dr. Watkins, are you saying the opinions and attitudes you expressed as a broke young adult, mirror what you profess now, with a few degrees, children and money in your pocket? C’mon Bro, is it far fetched to think that your ideas and attitudes haven’t evolved in 20+ years. Ice Cube just like your self should be afforded the opportunity to grow and expand his understanding. Clearly the brother has matured, and the body of his work reflects that. I dare you to judge him by the same measure you judge yourself. Often times we are very critical of others while grading ourselves on the curve. I agree with you totally about BET and other media outlets, but at the same time recognize it’s only entertainment. I was molded, mentored, and shaped by my mother and father, and not by the fake images on screen or videos. I think far too many use entertainment icons as scapegoats for their own lack of involvement.
