Stringer Bell was not someone to emulate. Although it was Avon's error in getting locked up that started their downfall, it was Stringer's negotiating with Prop Joe that got the crew marked as weak and drove the nail into the coffin. Stringer Bell was just a puppet for Proposition Joe, who essentially ended up supplying the whole city. Stringer did not build that alliance: he was the face of it. Stringer badly wanted to appear to be the man. Prop Joe was glad to oblige and hold on to the real power and money. As the holder of the connect, Joe put himself in a position to take a cut off every brick he sold to the co-op, because only he would know what he paid the connect. Joe even managed to drive a wedge between Stringer and Avon, his chief rivals. The idea that Stringer negotiated with Marlo Stanfield is laughable. Stringer talked, and Marlo tooled up because he knew that given the situation, Stringer's response was nonsense. The only thing to be said was "I can show you better than I can tell you," which sadly is the ONLY way things like that get resolved. Avon knew this and tried to respond in kind, but Stringer's approach had bungled things to the point that Marlo marked them for weak and was emboldened to stand his ground. Joe on the other hand actually developed some leverage on Marlo and negotiated. I definitely don't think Obama should follow Stringer's lead when it comes to diplomacy. Or business for that matter, as Stringer was a terrible businessman on the legit side of things. The only lesson to be learned from Stringer is to stick to what you know. I loved the realness of the HBO hit, The Wire. As a social worker, I think it was amazing how they portrayed the lived reality for some involved in the 'game'. Showing the multi-intelligences, layers,needs, aspirations,struggles and arbitrary decisions that are made for certain individuals by certain individuals (or levels of government) that are far removed from those they have been elected to serve.
