There is a really good article in the New York Times on “Precious” by renowned author, Ismael Reed. In it he explains why “Precious” has gotten such great critical response from the white community while being disparaged by many critics in the Black community.

Among black men and women, there is widespread revulsion and anger over the Oscar-nominated film about an illiterate, obese black teenager who has two children by her father. The author Jill Nelson wrote: “I don’t eat at the table of self-hatred, inferiority or victimization. I haven’t bought into notions of rampant black pathology or embraced the overwrought, dishonest and black-people-hating pseudo-analysis too often passing as post-racial cold hard truths.” One black radio broadcaster said that he felt under psychological assault for two hours. So did I.

Reed also looks into the reasons why “Precious” has been received from the all white, Oscar voting committee.

It was the enthusiastic response from white audiences and critics that culminated in the film being nominated for six Oscars by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an outfit whose 43 governors are all white and whose membership in terms of diversity is about 40 years behind Mississippi. ….

He goes into detail using former First Lady, Barbara Bush as an example.

Barbara Bush, the former first lady, not only hosted a screening of “Precious” but also wrote about it in Newsweek, saying: “There are kids like Precious everywhere. Each day we walk by them: young boys and girls whose home lives are dark secrets.”

Another point made, is that “Precious”caters to previous stereotypes about white people saving Black people from dispair.

Black films looking to attract white audiences flatter them with another kind of stereotype: the merciful slave master. In guilt-free bits of merchandise like “Precious,” white characters are always portrayed as caring. There to help. Never shown as contributing to the oppression of African-Americans. Problems that members of the black underclass encounter are a result of their culture, their lack of personal responsibility.

Like writer Armond White, he compares “Precious” to “Birth Of A Nation.”

Redemption through learning the ways of white culture is an old Hollywood theme. D. W. Griffith produced a series of movies in which Chinese, Indians and blacks were lifted from savagery through assimilation. A more recent example of climbing out of the ghetto through assimilation is “Dangerous Minds,” where black and Latino students are rescued by a curriculum that doesn’t include a single black or Latino writer.

I agree with Reed’s article. I thought “Precious” was a bad movie that was meant for white people to feel pity for poor Black girls. The main character is in no way representative of the Black community. She is an extremely overwieght, illiterate girl who is raped by her father, has two children, one with Down Syndrome from her dad and has AIDS. While illiteracy, obesity and AIDS are a problem in the Black community, it seems like they only play pity parts in the movie.Despite what Barbara Bush may think overweight, illiterate, teenage mother, incest victims with AIDS are not “everywhere.” The movie is clearly directed at the Oscar voters who vote for movies with mentally disabled  people or holocaust victims by getting the “pity” vote.

I agree with this article. Precious the worst movie I’ve seen last year. A lot of black actors movies are always shown as negative to the world. I wouldn’t recommend this movie to no one, I don’t see nothing outstanding about Precious.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MrsDeveter/ MrsDeveter

    I totally disagree.
You MUST remember this movie was based on the novel PUSH by Sapphire an African American Woman and therefore the expressions of the author.
I happen to think the actors did a wonderful job in depicting the characters and telling this story. I did not see this movie as one that was ‘meant for white people to feel pity for poor black girls.’
I ran across this book one day while browsing for a good read at the library. After reading the back cover I was shocked to discover this book was supposed to be a young adult title. Once I began reading it I was so jarred by all the topics that were discussed and angered by the abuse that all of the girls endured. It pulled at every single heart string I have as a mother and woman. The story of Precious is the story of so many little girls regardless of their ethnic background! It reminds me very much of the book Bastard Out of Carolina which depicted a very similar circ**stance involving a little white girl. Her stigma wasn’t that she was obese or ugly but that she was “ILLEGITIMATE”, born to a 15 year old mother living with extended family in a poor part of town. This little girl was sexually abused by her step father repeatedly. Her mother didn’t leave him… even after catching him raping her daughter. Precious is also reminiscent of The Color Purple, especially the illustration of incest, abandonment, poverty, addiction and illiteracy. These all the things that we as African Americans or Blacks (which ever you prefer) want to keep in the laundry bag for fear of being exposed.

Why is it that when a topic we all know is going on in our community comes up, we clam up? Why can’t we raise our hands and say yes I suffered incest, or my mother can’t read and even I was addicted etc. Instead of applauding those who publicize these topics we brow beat them. We say they are doing it just for the money, and they are airing our ‘dirty laundry’. I applaud Lee Daniels and his team for getting this story on the big screen. I hope each person who contributed to this movie receives an Oscar! Instead of hating why can’t we celebrate?

Man yall are always critisizing. Guess what? There are obese white, teenage girls that have been raped and have a child or 2 with there father and that are illiterate and probably have HIV. It does happen in a lot of other cultures. The movie just shows it from a black urban perspective.

we still have so far 2 go. im so tired of labelling every movie with race relations “racist”. these are just visible signs of a bigger problem wich is the fire. maybe hollywood is racist, so no movies casting a black man in a positive light can get filmed. its been a while since i saw the movie, but if my memory serves me correctly, she was raped by a darker fellow and fell in luv with the lighter one. im not saying that some blacks dont live this way. nor am i saying that they dont deserve a voice in hollywood. but i didnt see barbra bush showing roots in her livingroom.

I enjoyed watching the movie and reading the book, because IT IS REAL!!! Monique could even relate to the book because she went though some of it. It happens all of the time to people of all races and of all shapes and sizes as well…It’s sad that it happens, but it does and I’m glad that the movies and books that are out don’t all depict happliy ever after fairtale endings all of the time. That is beyond predictable, not real life, and is boring…I do see more white people at movies that have mainly black actors in it nowadays, but other than that, I don’t understand why anyone should be outraged by this movie/book…Black roles appear to vary in my eyes, because I watch Grey’s Anatomy and the big black woman on there is very successful, literate, hard working, and much more, and I’ve watched the tv show “Glee” and the black girl on there is not small at all, but she is doing something positive which is going to school, engaging in extracirricular activities, and more, along with movies that show big black women getting men who might seem to only date small average model type women, but at the same time, they are smart, support themselves, etc….Just trying to touch on every main point presented in that article and sharing my opinion/take on it…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gatekeepa/ Gatekeepa

I agree with the article..I didn’t like the movie… I believe it was the worst movie I’ve seen depicting the home life of an african american child.. rape and incest.. WAIT…didn’t we see this already with the film “the color purple?”..

Look …white folks in hollywood love to see down trotten.. struggling..uneducated.. oversexed..rape scene..increst..anything NEGATIVE with regard to black folks..or negroes as they are called these day..to discredit to intellignet african americans who are doing ti the RIGHT way in 2010..this director/producer of the film has a fetish with these type of films.. he did the film “THE HUNTER” which was about child rape..and a few other movies with regard to perverted sex scenes as the main focus of his films..its SICKENING and perverted..and I will not be spenting any more money to continue to see such films of perversion.. the same with the film “the blind side”.. here we have a dumb ..unintelligent, uneducated obese young black male..homeless and southern white woman who takes him in out of PITY…one thing about this story..the child becomes a NFL player of which I’m sure his white family who took him doesn’t have to work a day in their life EVER..

These type of film only confirm what white folks has always said and believe.. we are nothing short of animals in their minds.. we are uneducated, sex addictes.. drug addictes.. high school drop outs.. number one in abortions(murdering our unborn).. rapist.. etc.,.. even though this was a film accepted in hollywood by a blackman..who directed and produced this film and I believe he also did “MONSTER’S BALL” where Halle Berry only received her oscar because she was an over-sexed black female who was a drug addict and did a insidous sex scene with a senior citizen unattractive white male who was drug addict also.. and that is why because of that roll she played..and she got the OSCAR. So again this is what hollywood wants to see and believe who we are as people in society, they don’t wnat o depict upstanding african american success stories.. so NO I’m not giving this film “precious”.. Koodoos..it’s hollywood and what they want to see black folks depicted as.. all the time..

The only time ..I see modern day african americans generally not in film similar to “precious” or thug out drive by movies.. who actors are in shape and healthy mentally and with a all around GOOD personality and not stereotyped is in the daily T.V. soap opera’s…on occasion..

Why must everything be about race. The book was written by a African American woman directed by African American for the most part the whole cast is African American. It is a story about thing that have happened before and probably going right now. I enjoyed the movie and the main thing that I got out of it is that no matter where you come from or what you have been through you can make it. Even though her mother called her stupid, dumb, and worthless she still went to school and started bettering her education. She also went back and got her daughter and was taking care of her kids.

blacks dont like movies that show the truth about how nasty alot of black parents can be because blacks dont think the whole country already no how screwed up most black families are so any movie that even hints at what alot of black parents are really like wont be liked.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lovelyldylv6/ lovelyldylv6

@blkman6ft6_inla…You must can see inside every black person household to make the assumption what a lot of black parents are really like? Just how do you know that??? But than again you like to lean toward the white race and talk against black people everytime a issue comes up about black people. Take a look in the mirror you don’t have room to judge nobody.

How come when Rap videos and music show is in a negative light we as black people defend it by saying it is our reality.

When precious depicts us that way and it is realistic we are repulsed by it. We reject it and say that it is how white people see us in a negative light.

This is like when the media reports the unwed teenage pregnancy rates or the high school drop out rates…which are accurate and true. We reject that as how white people see us in a negative light.

We need to wake up and admit to whats going on among us…

Are you retarded or are you just posting this to get a reaction? I hope the latter. You have to be in denial. How do explain a real life “Precious” situation? Let me post some information on it:

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6842075.html

A 28-year-old Alvin man remained in jail Friday, charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child after officials said DNA tests confirmed he fathered a baby with his 11-year-old stepdaughter.

“In our office, there is a sense of deep sorrow,” said Lisa Jolly, executive director of the Brazoria County Alliance for Children, a nonprofit that provides a range of services to abused children. “To the general population, it is very shocking.”

The stepfather, whom the Houston Chronicle is not identifying because it indirectly could identify the victim, was arrested Wednesday and remained in the Brazoria County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail Friday, the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office said.

Here’s more information from the article I just posted:

The young mother, her sister and the infant are living with an adult cousin, according to court papers.

Carter said the mother of the abused girl did not shield her daughter from the abuse, but she declined to elaborate.

“What I will tell you is, the child’s mother was not protective, and that’s why we went to court to take custody,” Carter said.

It really kills me that people so willingly pull the race card out at every turn. The Precious character represents MANY girls in America. This story very easily crosses color lines. How much of an egomaniac are you to think this story is only about black people.

i liked the movie….. and some of u all are right!! this goes on in every corner of the world as far as young girls or young boys growing up who have been in that situation. Why always run to the negative side for more support and comfort when the big picture is, black people, or all people, that we all need to think of a more positive way to confront this issue in not just our community but all communities as well and to show these younger children or those who are already grown up and still troubled a way of another road to walk with more love, prayer, and support???? I really dont see that this is a race issue in the first place. I take this movie as a lesson learned and how i can become a supporter and to help break down barriers and not shy people away because of their condition. Im glad I watched that movie because it makes me think that, that could have been me, but everyday I thank GOD for keeping me, but i also pray for those that are going through this and I think that the exposure to this foolishness in the nasty minds of men or women should be put out there for people to come together and put a stop to it.

I agree with Mrs Deveter and Destinee20 but also with some of the criticisms too. (I thought Lee Daniels directed a truly great film (artistically speaking) about a serious topic. It had more black actresses than any other film I’ve seen and one of the finest, perhaps THE finest directors currently making films (That both director Lee Daniels and Saphire, the writer are both black means progress – there are still many barriers and prejudices towards black directors and female directors of all color). The acting was of the highest level anywhere, anytime. However I agree that white America keeps awarding the portrayal of dirty laundry in the black community, possibly because airing the dirty laundry in the white community would open up a flood gate that much of white America seems unable to cope with. Everyone knows that African Americans have been historically shafted, kidnapped, enslaved, cheated, lynched, raped and distorted from the very first day of arrival in America. The guilt of having raped black women during the days of slavery as well as destroyed families, extorted free labor, beaten people like animals etc. is still very much in the back of every white man’s mind whether he admits it or not. The white mind wants to be able to say: “See, all people do bad stuff, even black people.” Or he wants to say, “See, a lot of black problems are self created” and so on. When Sapphire wrote the book and Daniels made the movie they were not trying to placate white minds; they were trying to tell an important, universal story that could have happened anywhere but in this case was set in a NY, 1980s dysfunctional black family context. That funding appeared for this movie and not, say certain other stories that depict white brutality or some other facet that is hard for white people to face might be a definite issue cause we do seem to see a lot of depictions of “the darker side” of “dark people.” But of all the films to pick on, why Precious? This is the film that has come the closest to revealing the oppressive racist and sexist kind of system we have here in America. It’s true that mothers like Monique’s character are rare, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist in every race. I did not see the mother as a monster; she was disturbed and trapped in a system of nothingness, not because the black community was churning out “welfare animals not fit to live” but because the legacy of slavery created by the white community that viewed slaves as animals barely fit to live was continuing to live on in a new way: low pay, not enough education for all,no decent training or jobs, an inadequate welfare system that keeps people barely subsisting and busts people who try to work and make a few extra bucks etc.

It does disturb me however that the mother was, in a way, portrayed (or seen) as a “welfare animal not fit to live” when so many black mothers for so long have really been unbelievable heros up against tremendous odds. In fact mothers in general sacrifice all kinds of things for their children, work for less pay than men, and are usually the ones to hold the family together but Hollywood usually portrays women and mothers in general as witches, and black women in particular as invisible or angry b***hes. Monique did an amazing acting job: she was playing the exception to the general rule. There’s nothing wrong with that in my opinion as long as we can see some great roles too once in a while based on remarkable women or even just ordinary women and mothers.

I thought The Blind Side had an extremely patronizing scene about that football star’s biological mother. She too was depicted as a pathetic drug addict mother without going into depth about her character while Sandra Bullock sat there trying to play the hero. (I like Sandra Bullock as an actress – I’m just saying her part was to play the great almighty white savior of this soon to be football star. I thought that was much more patronizing than anything in Precious but supposedly lots of black folks like that movie more than Precious. Maybe it depends on what part of the country you are from, whether you are from the suburbs or the city, whether you go for appearances and pride or depth and insight, whether you are rich or poor, whether you like drama or comedy, heavy or light, facing things or getting away from them, and a host of other things.

But whether you liked the story or not you can’t deny that Precious had amazing acting and directing and brought out difficult things that young people sometimes face without support of any kind.

Yeah! that’s what all those “black exploitation” movies from the 70′s did, got me to pitty that beautiful Pam Grier as she played victim to my 12 year old master/slave mentality in the bathroom. Opps! Sorry, i forgot, those films were made to flatter Black audiances. This is just 2 deep for the average film goer. I never saw the movie so I can’t comment on this particular film, but I have not found a single White person yet that feels their guilt has been relieved somehow in some way because they saw some really Caucasian looking White actress help out some Black girl in need. I just don’t think Whites r running around looking for reasons to feel good about helping Blacks. However, I do understand the stereotype of Liberals Whites that we do this sort of thing and and have done such for years, you know, the master feeling sorry for the slave thing and helping them out because we Liberals (now known as Progressives) believe, deep down inside that Blacks cannot help themselves. Okay, I’m sure there is some of that psychobable bull-s-h-i-t going on in some Whites, but let me ask this question, If those “helpful” Whites are actually helping, would u prefer they turn away and say fuc-k-u, get up on ur own? Hmm? If they did that they’d be playing right into the sterotype that none of us care at all about Blacks. The way my silly little Caucasian as-s sees it is, if someone is willing to help, take the help, but if they patronize u along the way, explain to them how they did so and try to enlighten them, because if they r really helping u, they probably believe they r doing so with a pure heart and if shown otherwise, they may actually take that into consideration and change.

I once was close to a man (high yellow dreadlocks down the back black man) who said he hated the movie “White Men Can’t Jump.” He felt that it implied that White men can do everything else but jump and therefore was a put down to Blacks. He said that if Whites do end up being great leapers, the implication then would be that Whites can do everything. There was more to it but that is the jest of it. He was frustrated that his White friends had no clue what the he-ll he was talking about. I looked at him, nodded once or twice and walked away without agreeing or disagreeing. I guess I disappointed him too, but the fact is, most Whites have no clue how deep many Blacks r seeing things like this so when they hear it spelled out like it is in the article above, they simply think u r nuts. if you want to stay in that position, being thought of as nuts fine, but i think it would be good to dialog with these (subconsciously racist) Whites who have no clue as to what u r speaking about in order to show them how it affects u when they act certain ways. DIOLOG with as many as u can, don’t accuse them, cause u’ll lose even the ones who do care. just my sh-it for the day on that topic. perhaps my opinion will change tomorrow…:)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GiGi_Ambition/ GiGi_Ambition

African Americans do not like the movie because it shows what happens in some of the homes of the African Americans. The white people like it because it is entertaining and leaves them on the superior level that they have built for themselves. Take a look at the movie and try to make it right in real reality.

Blkman6ft6_how is this leaning towards truth when it’s based on fiction?
When it comes to parenting, all groups go full spectrum on good to evil, so let’s get off the old stereotype of associating bad parenting w/any particular cultural group. In my opinion ‘Beloved’ was a film that showed that a mother would rather take her own child’s life then have he/she end up brutalized by slavery. The Oscars gave no kudos to Beloved but a film portraying blacks as brutalizing our own takes high honors. Give me a freakin’ break. Why aren’t we throwing our shoes at the heads of all those responsible? Nikki Giovanni said she was boycotting this film b/c black men have it hard enough w/o other blacks portrying them as monsters. I agree. Although I’ve numerous offers to view cam copies, i absolutely refuse to abuse my own psyche w/crap like that.

If Precious had been produced by Europeans, subconciously, a fatwah of the voodoo kind would have been fothcoming. The black folks that put this out there like that, clearly do not understand the law of reciprocity. The film’s concept is so offensive, i can’t imagine that it wouldn’t cause the “souls of the ancestors” to rise up in their discontent. This is not the time for these types of actions. Haiti’s spiritual dispersion is in the ocean’s mist. Lest we forget how art impacts the artist, like Heath Ledger who gave us Monster Ball, Brokeback Mountain and his finale’ Dark Knight.

Personally I think it’s time a film this real was made, it brings to light issues normal people deal with every day. HIV,child molestation, illiteracy, obesity, emotional scarring. While some may see this film as a symbol of self defecation I see it as the truth. Ignorance is bliss and that is why I think this movie unsettles people so much, it refuses to let you be comfortable in your little bubble and forces you to face the horrors of reality. I work with “disadvantaged” youth and being one myself I can tell you that THIS S**T HAPPENS. Too bad a movie came out that finally forced those among us with their heads buried in the sand to come up for air and face life.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jahz_Lynx1/ Jahz_Lynx1

babytonnie_have you read the Old Testament? Child molestation, illiteracy, obesity, emotional scarring and sexually transmitted disease is not unique to the 21st. century. Some Europeans might have their heads in the sands regarding other cultures. They got their own sh**t and self pride to maintain. This film doesn’t force a new awareness, it replays the horrors and contributes to self degredation of the culture as a whole. Blood Diamond and Lord of War gave global perspectives to the conditions of young African males. African Americans have been spun around in so many ways we can’t clearly delineate the causes of which we are affected, HIV/AID is one example. Being black and “disadvantaged” is not unique, some believe it’s synonomous. This film drives home that point.

“Why White People Love “Precious” And Black People Hate It” The title is bull-sh-it but that is for later. If Precious had been played by a White person and it was a Black person or group of Black people who brought her out of the hell she was living in, i wonder what the difference would be in perception between Whites and Blacks. Would Blacks have waited until it came out on cable to see it because they did not like the premise? Would Black people see the over weight, poor, welfare receiving White terribly abused girl and family (probably situated in a trailer park) as White trailer park trash and stereotyped that we hillbillies r crazy? Would Black people have criticized it for being too much like the Black slave running back into the Master’s burning house to save the White master and his children before thinking of freeing him/herself? HMMM! Would Whites resent being saved by a Black person? Would it kick up all the fond memories we White folks have about being cared for during slavery by Blacks? Would it kick up fond memories of just how loyal Blacks r to we Whites??? Now 4 the good part. My Black wife, her bi-racial girlfriend, my Black M-in-L and several other Black relatives and colleagues from work saw the movie and……..u guessed it, liked it. One of the negative comments was that the ending was corny. Although they understood it, no one gave much thought to the implications proposed by this article and none of them fit the generalization within the title. Oh! I almost forgot, my Black wife and her bi-racial friend noticed that 2 Black women, not young girls but women, laughed every time Monique appeared on screen. I heard that Monique is the mother of Precious and is the one who wanted to continue her life on welfare and terribly abused her daughter and the grandchild she had from Monique’s bo. Hmm! Maybe they were laughing at one of her comedy routines they remembered each time they saw her face. :)

This shows nothing new and our ancestors would NOT roll in their graves but smile upon this generation or THE generation that finally understand what is being said and done.. That incest is something that happened years ago as well. HELLO there were “N****R” Breeding farms Cotton was just a past time to keep the slaves in shape and busy. To keep a blood line “pure” as they say once a female “wench” has reached the child baring age and has been de-flower “raped” by her master then she is paired up with a male to get “knocked” many times it is from the immediate family. Father Brother then uncle cousin etc. This movie is here to spark your interest and research so how about doing that. And it is not lies it is factual.

Get on amazon read that book Mandingo and that will start you on the right path. Please open your eyes and mind!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jahz_Lynx1/ Jahz_Lynx1

Gigi_Mandingo is a historical compilation of many slave narratives. It’s based on facts but the story line was fiction. I’m just wondering how many people saw Precious and thought similarly, it based on actual events.
I thought Precious was “knocked” by her mom’s man which isn’t inscest.
If Adam & Eve’s kids populated the planet, then we’re all spawn of incest.
Mandingo was also a porno actor. Are you saying cotton plantations was a big orgy?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GiGi_Ambition/ GiGi_Ambition

Yes Mandingo’s story line was fictional but still rooted from factual events. Which still play a role in today’s life. The fact that Precious was Knocked by her moms man is not inscest but rape. But if it was her father then it was incest. Yes we would be all spawn of incest. Hence why we are all living in a world of sin. Hence why we are all brothers and sisters in the eyes of God but it is not the right of Man to commit such acts knowingly. Mandingo is not a name of an actor is was a word used to describe a pure bred slave. Cotton plantations, some where a big orgy yes. That is where slave trading came about as well. Inorder to have slave fine slaves that is you had to do like making a crop. You had to plant them in this case it was humans and they mated them. Later on they started to get hip if you may to the fact that inbeeding caused birth defect leaving the slave worthless to sell and no profit.

Many stories told today are based on facts through out the years names and specfic events are faded sometimes and stories that resemble the true events are produced to paint a picture. That is what Mandingo is about. And not the movie the book.

    Thanks for the visit

I refused to go see it and my chick couldn’t put her finger on exactly why she didn’t like it, but her white girls loved it. It was the fact that it did play to bad stereotypes, and it’s was a Color Purple Harpo type black man who started the whole problem. I just HATE these stupid movies that claim to “air our dirty laundry”, when all it does it help others confirm what they suspected all along, that the stereotypes are true because why else would a black person put that out there for whites? I’m pretty sure the author of the movie thought he’d 1-up Tyler Perry, with this garbage that plays to black female anger at the worst possible black male characters, to cash in, but he did black people a disservice, with this.
Barbara Bush held a screening? Is that a joke? Remember what she said about the Katrina disaster displacing black people: “What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is that they all want to stay in Texas. Everybody is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (chuckle) – this is working very well for them.”

Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire is a 2009 American drama film directed by Lee Daniels. Precious is an adaptation by Geoffrey S. Fletcher of the 1996 debut novel Push by an American author, Sapphire.

The story centers on Clairence “Precious” Jones, a 16-year-old girl from Harlem who has been repeatedly raped by her drug-addict father and physically and mentally abused by her invalid mother. Based upon the “young women [Sapphire] encountered when [she] worked as a literacy teacher in Harlem and the Bronx for seven years,”[1] the protagonist epitomizes the lost and downtrodden youth of America. Written in a stream-of-consciousness style as narrated by Precious, some critics have argued that Precious’ voice “fades in and out . . . like the accents of B-movie actors,” while others claim that “Precious’ persona swiftly overrides whatever irritation the reader may feel”.[2]

I talked to a white woman just yesterday who told me her story of abuse with her mother and father. Her father neat her to the state of Epilepsy. (sp?) She was raped by him everyday and then beaten with objects every night when she refused to eat meat at the dinner table. Her father would cut off the chickens heads and make her watch them running around with their heads cut off and then make her pluck off all of their feathers before her mother would cook it for their dinner. She was served this same chicken for days while the rest of the family ate dinner, some of the other things that she went through were being blindfolded by her father and driven in the trunk of his car to a location where other men would rape her for days tied up and was starved without food and water in the process of that. Child protective services took her finally and put her in a foster home. When the judge decided to give her back to her parents, they did the same thing to her again. She finally ran away from home and has had a difficult time every since in life and with her health. She still has burn marks all over her body, and many many other body marks to remind her of the trauma daily.

I shared her story with you not to back anything on the white side of things but just to say that it actually IS happening to many many kids all over the world and needs to be portrayed by whatever color is brave enough to actually do it.

Our society is too hushed up about things. Someone needed to communicate this message sooner than this. I’m very happy that our black actresses and actors got paid the recognition and finances to tell the story instead of someone else who couldn’t and wouldn’t have done such a great job.

NANA- somethings you say I agree with to a certain degree but when you take it to the level of contridiction I really SMH and here is one reason why
    —you said–
“This is not a normal phenomenom within Ghettos we are A sensible people, This story line was told from 1 PERSONS P.O.V.!!!! 1 PERSON!!! 1 PERSON this happened 2!!!! 1 PERSON how can you entail her story 2 A large percentage of our people households and say this is prevelant behind closed doors…..” one person’s point of view ok understandably true but then you come back and say
    – “I am sorry we just don’t mascarade like that!!!” come on now WE no that is YOUR point of view you are that 1 person who beleives that (fair enough right-Good)

As far as your denial you could not be more wrong see in a sense you to are being spoon fed. To think that this is not happeninging in the world because you do not know about it. Before I spit that spoon out myself years ago I probly would have agreed. but not so today.

There was a story of a young girl who was molested by her male family member at young age till she was a teen and then turned prostitute. When she was ask why when you got older did you not say something. you know what she said. They told me that it was not possible for that to happen to me at such a young age or at all. My mom said that she works to hard for me to make up such a story. And the man just said if you love me you wont tell anybody (love for a family member) Now this was just by looking from the outside and just saying no that doesnt happen.

AS far as slightly affected that is YOUR point of view and you are trying to feed everyone else YOUR BS. there are more than 3 % of families that go through turmoil like this. And no matter the race it is tough and some commit suicide, some run away, some stay out of fear but many times it doesnt get reported. So you wouldnt know. working in the Medicaid feild open up a lot of doors/windows for me to see things that I would not have seen and It made me sick. This movie shed a LED Flash light on the problem we have.. Maybe you should visit a womens shelter or teen rehab or even a teen physc ward and then come back and write about it.

AND please tell me or explain what is a n!gger wake up call? When did you receive yours and what did it do for you?

So you know who we can all point the finger at. From a cultural perspective that bs just isn’t entertainment! Like we all know the majority of SW aren’t there to help people 4 out 5 days. FUK THIS MOVIE WE HAVE BIGGER WHALES 2 FRY
do you get the gist of what I am saying now???

And the phucked up thing is that this is clearly the worst case scenario situation.

    1. Fat
    2. Ugly
    3. Illiterare
    4. 2 sets of abusive parets
    5. 1 kid has aids
    6. other kids has another dissease

Now there are probably other negative situations that I missed out on but a story liek this is clealry the minority of what is going on in the black community. Why can’t a story about a black girl that struggles but enventually makes it to Havard or something? Is that just not viable in Hollywood?

Go watch the movie “NUTS” with Barbara Streisand. Great movie got little or no hype about a White father raping his White daughter who ends up in prostitution and kills a john that abuses her. Guess what! The john was White and not a Black pimp in sight. SOME OF U MIGHT WANT TO SEE IT. U KNOW THAT crying wolf too often will even turn off ur supporters after a while. I’m sure that if i had the interest i could find many many many more White based movies about this sort of thing. Hey! How about the “At Close Range” a true story about a Chester County – by way of Tennessee – family the Johnston’s. The oldest Johnston ends up turning on his own son, rapes his son’s girlfriend and then has about 7 bullets put into him. How f**king hillbilly crazy is that eh? Did I, a f**king hillbilly myself, feel it depicted hillbillies as monsters or did i see it for what it was, a movie that i could like or not like, see or not see. Not an indictment on hillbillies, just a story made into a movie to show some s**t and make some money. How about the Bert Reynolds movie DELIVERANCE? Anybody hear we hillbillies complain about how the hillbillies in that movie were depicted? If u haven’t seen it please do and let me know if those hillbillies aren’t being exposed as….well, hibillies. Get it? :) it is clear that there is a lot of s**t that can come out of almost any movie, but get real about this movie okay. Falling down, how about that one, a White guy has a really bad day, week, month and one day loses it and goes crazy while lost in “minoirty” parts of town. A real “middle aged White man down on his luck” kind of movie where Whitie goes off and kills a bunch of people that r not White. Mike Douglass. Was it racist or was it exposing the sentiments of certain White guys that felt discriminated against and blew a f**king cork as a result. Just because reality sometimes gets depicted on film or in a book, even if just a small portion of a certain reality, does not mean the intent is to make Whitie feel good by humiliating Blacks. :)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blackhawaiian/ blackhawaiian

It’s probably true, that this movie perpetuates negative stereotypes, of black people. If whites want negative stereotypes of blacks, all they have to do, is watch their local news broadcast. There they can see real life. Black on black crime, black women having illegitimate kids, filthy mouthed rappers, covered in tattoos, and inarticulate black athletes, who can’t even read, their own contracts. This is real life, and life is worse, than a movie. People should look at the movie, and take it with a grain of salt. As a proud African American, I’m sick of these whining blacks. They should do some good, help the people in their communities, raise funds for Haiti, instead of whining about a movie. If people don’t like it, don’t watch it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GiGi_Ambition/ GiGi_Ambition

Lets try this again -NANA- Look at what you wrote and first try replacing the word “will” with “maybe” because what you think is not exacttly what others think. And how could the producer be public enemy? The movie based on true events is made to raise awarness just at people raise awarness about other horrible things. And come on How did i spin your words into being negative? please point it out? I compare with your own words and then go on to stating my point. As you have done with your own posting.
The FACT is this happens in some of our homes and there is someone out there who no longer feels like it was or is just them going through it. Now what they do with the proceeds is something different personally AFTER all the bs red tape and taxing that money would go to a program to include lawyers to help those in need.
Because I know everyone does not think like me I should not be expected to be overwhlemed. My natural instinct is to seek and understand. The fact that you are saying that I am being negative shows that you would rather not know the truth. The truth does hurt but it can also releive you.

And to your begining statement “2 give it this GLOAT this STATUS that this is US behind closed doors is Blatant” hunny please the status that is given to this movie is humph a lil over the top but finally someone is bringing to light what happens. This is a real situation and umm there are young people suffering right now from this. No matter you do not beleive it or think it is over kill someone does and did and here it is.

For me, I am not dealing in the realm of racism…Precious was too raw and did not leave me with a good feeling…where was the triumph? It was an over kill of every vile mishaps to a child. The majority of people that witness the film that I have had a discussion feels the same way…others felt it is enough hardship in everyday living in their lives and they do not need a movie like Precious to bring them down or educate what they all ready know exist. Widespread revulsion? GTFOH! I know plenty of black people who read the book, saw the movie and actually enjoyed it. It seems to me that Mr. Reed is completely detached from reality. NO ONE is saying that this movie is a snap shot of black people as a whole, that would be ridiculous. But it is a realistic picture of what some black children go through. I worked in the child services business for nearly a decade and a SAW these stories. Its real.

Some black folks are obsesses with this notion of “keeping our dirty laundry out of the light”. But airing that out brings attention to it and can help to make a difference in changing those realities.

I am sure Mr. Reed would like every depiction of Black life on screen to look like the Cosby show. But out experience is a diverse one and this movie simply shows part of that experience.

Question: Who is the white person in the movie being the hero? Because I just watched the movie Friday night and I cannot recall a white person being the hero. But maybe they mean Mariah? Mariah is not white as far as I remember plus she does not save Precious in my opinion and the teacher is not white either. So someone help me out with that point? I am white and I ‘liked’ the movie. Liked is not even the right word because the topic is pretty horrible. However, I like how it is being addressed and how in the end she rises from the ashes of her past. And to say it is stereotyping is not the truth because that kinda ish happens anywhere any second of the day.

I may hit a nerve here, but I always feel that black people like to hide that bad things happen in there communities as well as in others. Just like the whole he is gay on the down low thing. It is there, but we dont talk about it. And it seems to be the same with abuse. A person very close to me went through the same things Precious went through as a kid but never spoke to anybody about it because of that reason I stated above. I think for Precious to actually be so brave and come forward with what she went through is one reason I like the movie because most of the time people dont talk about it and I think what the author of the book is trying to bring across is exactly that: That you do not need to be ashamed when something wrong has happened to you, but rather speak the truth and be set free.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lilwayne-1814/ lilwayne-1814

DREDZ, brother you are on it. I have seen the film on 3 occasions and was in no way offended. Contrary to Reed’s belief, this story happens. It’s just that as a people, we are not to take what goes on behind close doors outside.
Here’s a novel idea, if REED, CASEY GANE-McCALLA or any other detractors share the idea, then now is the time to pool your resources and make that movie you so desire. Oh, my bad, why would you work together to improve ‘their’ perception of ‘our’ plight through movie? That would be out of step with ‘our’ perception of ‘our’ stereotype of crabs in the bucket.

I dont think black people are trying to hide anything by NOT liking this movie..We know it happens and to all races..I think SOME of us just feel that THIS is the way that HollyKrakkka tends to portray us ALL THE TIME. We would just like to see a movie with some positivity to it nominated for 6 academy awards. We would have liked to have seen Angela Bassett win for her strong black woman role played in Malcolm-X as opposed to Mo’Nique being the hateful, opressive black mother in Precious…Y’all get it now? I think it portrays typical broken family homes with parents who dont give a dam, be it black or white families. And what white characters are being referred to in terms of them being caring in this movie? The movie is based on a book, and as far as I have been told follows the storyline told in that book. Seriously, I did not see the Movie and have no interest in seeing it. WAKE UP Black people, Boycott, we have gone from physical slavery to mental slavery. Why is it white writers and white people keep telling our story. All black people should have taken a clue when at the 74th Annual Academy Awards Denzel Washington won Best Actor for his role as a corrupt cop in Training Day. Halle Berry won an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance as a piece of black/ biraciall meat for billy bob, in Monster’s Ball. They keep dissin us and we keep going/selling out for it, for what? it seems 2 types of black women get work, sex beings and Ancha Mima. Independent film director, I am.

I am overly sensitive to how we are treated and portrayed in the media.
My closet friends advised me not to see it. So I took there advice. I can not understand why Monique, A pretty well established celebrity would play a part like that. I could see if she was a new comer. Some roles you need to turn down. Can you imagine Oprah playing that part? After watching the first ten minutes of Crash, I almost lost it. So I have to be very selective about the films I watch.

WAKE-UP PEOPLE ! I saw “Precious”, and LOVED it ! I think she well deserved the nomination and to win This has been going on in black homes for generations, incest, rape, and physical abuse. Both by the mother and father, and sisters and brothers ! I was molested as a child until the age of 13 ! My dear mother accused ME of stealing HER man, which was my STEPFATHER ! We do not associate still today ! So, take heave black-folks ! It’s time to place the blame where it belong……

I don’t know if any of you realize that Precious was produced by two very well known Black people that have had simular problems in their lifetime, I say tell it like it is. the truth will set you free………..

I agree, that Precious does not represent all black girls walking the street. I used to work with children who had behavioural problems. There were plenty of white children wo were my clients. I personally hate the pity part, and the white man rescue the black man or woman. I would love to see, like I did on CNN (Black in American Part II) Blacks helping one another. I loved that doc**entary because I saw us for a change, helping eachother. Yes, I do get tired of seeing us as victims. Why can’t we do more movies like, “Longshots?!” African-Americans need to see something more positive, and yes we do have problems in our neighborhoods and in our schools. But, who doesn’t have problems today?

If truth and honesty was such a big thing in this country their percetion of themselves would not be altered as it is. White folks tend to spread the truth about other races/culturesas if thgey were helping them. I don’t see white people talk about their issues like their issues with teen pregnancies and thge problem with their aids rate climbing alcholism and more. Again white people have found to sell us back negative issues of the past and we fall in love with it. Perception is reality and righy now their still creating theirs and ours

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Pleasure246/ Pleasure246

I feel sometimes we make accuations and point out racial distincitons where there are none. If “Precious” were played by a white female, helped by a black female councilor, would the message have been any less valid? You take the Barbara Bush’s statement in which no mention of “race” is incorporated. Perhaps people are reacting to this film because it resonates to a “truth” they have experienced. When I saw “Precious” I thought of a white friend of mine. In my life time I have known two white females that were sexually abused and one black female and one black male. No “race” likes to be the object of negativity. (Remember “The color purple?)We felt we were being “unfairly protrayed” . But thinking caring people simply felt it cast a light on Domestic Violance…Not color. When you feel a connection to the “Human RACE” the issues, not the color become your focus and concern. Just something for you to think about.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gromoe/ Gromoe

i am a filmmaker and I have been told by white people that they love films that talk about reality and real human events. The pity party is always about viewing something where one can say wow, someone’s life is way worse than mine. And in some cases just as bad, white reality is very twisted itself. The Producers knew that which is why they opened their pocketbooks to make this film. Even though it was produced by two people with questionable childhoods, I think Precious was embellished a bit much. Regardless, these are still roles that actors played and the big screen does not have to always be considered evidence of black reality, regardless of how white America chooses to view us.

I work in the medical field, so I know THIS story and many more like it need to be told and people need to HEED the message about HIV/AIDS. And I will never have a qualm about a movie that exposes incest. I went to see Precious and found it gruesomely enlightening and motivating [to help children like Precious]. Because while no there are not kids everywhere with the exact same circ**stances there are many living with incest, HIV, and abusive parents. If there is only one child like that per state – THAT’S TOO MANY!

Well I have one thing I got to say to people in general. This thing about racism I dont buy that it is everybody or even white on black or yellow on red;it is just some miggot people with their low sense of responsibilities trying to pinch people against each other.ONE LOVE that is what is unique not the amount of hate you have for anohter. The ability to turn the other chick for a slap.Ability to be in control even when it looks like you are below. To be recilent. That is what black is all about maturity. So brothers lets not get down to some peoples level to exchange words.Keep the silence that is what distinguishes a mad man from a sane man

People, it’s a movie! No movie ever written applied to every person of a race, or nation or a people. We as Black people are always looking for a racist behind every tree or under a rock. We have many issues that are very important to us as Black people. Why are we screming and doing something about our youth killing one another. A white policeman kills a Black person (I am not saying it is not wrong!!!) and we yell and scream but all of the killings of Black People t the hands of Whites, pale to the number of Us killing Us! Our young people are failing miserably in enducation, we are not starting and supporting Black business as we should. Do we know who controls the Black Hair product supply in this country, clue “It AIN’T Us” WHY!!! We are not the masters of our own fate because we can not get along, we’ve (not all) lost respect for one another, we do not value education as we once did and we do not build for the future. WAKE UP BLACK AMERICA!!!!

Black ppl hated it? When was this vote taken cuz I didn’t get a ballot! Wait, maybe for 20+ yrs I’ve always believed to be black, been treated like I’m black, but maybe I’m not black…oh no, that wasn’t it! We’ve been generalized again, js like white ppl like it means the white ppl that voted in the Oscar bid. It was a a damn good movie that focused on a girl who’s mom couldn’t stand her and father raped her. It also talks about a girl who lost hope, thought no one loved her and then she found a school and people that gave her hope! She got her own place, told her mom to f**k off, and she got her kids to live with her. I didn’t even think of race cuz there are a lot of kids out there raised like this, we js may not all witness it. Everything can’t be about race and js cuz it’s black history month doesn’t mean we can start pointing fingers at everything white ppl do. Hell, there’s more focus on this then why black men still get beaten by cops or get locked up for decades for a crime they didn’t commit!

We heard the same negativity when the Color Purple came out, even though it’s something we don’t want to face! The black race has faced alot of abuse, even at the hands of others blacks, i see this picture as showing the death of so many of our people souls! Abuse destroys who we are, the person we should have been, It’s like a bullet to the soul! The reason why so many lose their way, and never find their way back! If this movie should bring awareness, and cause the scales on our eyes and soul to fall away, that’s it’s purpose! Denial is a weakness, for evil to triumph is for good men to do NOTHING!

No one likes to see dirty laundry aired across national television and much less motion pictures. I do agree to some point that Precious is not the typical that you find in every other household, but there is extreme cases where you will find children similiar to her. But please don’t only look at the Black girl, it could be a black boys, white boys or girls. The poor children that endure any variation of this abuse, has no face, they come in all colors, shapes and sizes. Some deal with it better then others, some use it to move forward and others it destroy. I think that’s what Barbara Bush meant. We all may know people who are either going through something like this or went through it, but how would you know?

No one never knows what occurs behind closed doors. I think Precious was given such problems for a dramatic affect, but she represented all of the people that maybe going through any one of those mishaps in everyday life.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/crzzycindy/ crzzycindy

I do not agree with all that is written. The same thing has and does take place in all races. Who care what race brings to light behavior that is happening and has happened in all races. I don’t believe it should be made into a black issue because it takes away from the message that is being sent. I did not feel that the message was that this only happens only to blacks just because it was cast majority black actors. If anything I would think that society would be grateful to the black community bring out this horrific secret that takes place in all races. Giving strength to those to come forward who otherwise would not. I do not see it in the context that is being said in this article. But of course if a person wants they can make anything bad out of something that is ground breaking. It is a fantastic movie and I am sure it was difficult for some of the actors to make this movie because of it’s message.

i’m curious that no one has included the blind side (bls)in their remarks, unless i missed it, as a contrast to precious. to be fair, i haven’t seen bls but i’ve seen snippets of it and read about some of the scenes where white benevolence is front and center, and at its schmaltziest. for those who might have seen it, am i wrong in the notion that it’s more of the same, similar to different strokes, dangerous minds, etc., where blacks/minorities don’t have enough sense/humanity/ etc., to do what bullock’s character does? don’t know, just asking. but i have heard the criticism from black folks that bls perpetuates the old hollywood nobless oblige trope as a stand in for any real dimensionality in presenting black characters who come in to contact with white benefactors. and it’s almost to the exclusion to what black people have done for another for years, sans white folks. but, on the other hand, i’ve heard from a lot of black folks who loved bls too. go figure. having actually seen precious, and finding some of the content overwrought, over-done and too in-my-face i still felt that on the whole it had something to say. i do understand some black folk’s discomfort with it. but i like to think that we can take a look at some of the issues raised in it and not shrink away from them just because the characterizations are flawed, not to our liking, whatever. just because there might be a white impulse to valorise and precious-like screen behavior as representative of genuine black life, we shouldn’t invalidate what daniels was trying to say/accomplish. where am i wrong or being mislead?

@SoCo_Nes, yes we all know what the movie was about. The problem is it had more plot holes than a 3rd grader’s story.

Sure, there are people like that but the term “dead-beat dad” was coined for WHITE MEN, so why aren’t they glorifying this type of tragedy with a nightmare scenario that no one can win?

Plus, how could a 14-15 year old go to term with no one getting wiser OR investigating? She had to deliver and probably mentioned it. And to have two kids by a CHARACTER WITH NO NAME WHO APPEARS IN NONE OF THE CREDITS….?

Lee Daniels should be dragged behind a car. That would help him man up over his “broken childhood” too but he won’t take EVERY ONE WITH HIM.

And yes, I’m an aspiring film maker who has tackled a few tough topics with one short film in production now.

I’m up for good cinema but I couldn’t even find anythign redeeming in the trailer. Again, don’t blame the Academy, blame Oprah, Tyler, Perry, Lee Daniels, Sapphire, and whatever the writer’s name is. If everyone knows about this type of reverse-pandering, then we know the film makers are to blame. Not for showing a horrible environment, but for the aformentioned plot problems and lack of an ACTUAL HERO, but instead a “near-mindless creature” who won’t even runaway from home.

I don’t think any child would have stayed that long. They took turns on her? How is that even slightly cinematic? But then I guess the man behind Monster’s Ball can be expected to leave the WORTHLESS THUG out and drop it on the womens’ laps.
    Coward!!

This movie represents the slippery slope we as black folk must constantly navigate in order to survive here in this country.
The book is actually much better, more graphic and not as ‘nicety’ in the end. I don’t think Sapphire had any of this in mind when she wrote this book. She just wrote in a brutally honest way about a SLICE of African American life.
Unfortunately, like videos and everything else ,these sort of depictions become the ‘standard’ of truth that represents black folk in America.
The real problem is that we must learn to examine that which is green-lighted for production, understand why and then just move on.
With this movie I was prepared for the worst, pleasantly surprised by the softer edge it took on AND the magnificent performances delivered by all involved.
More than the old ‘white-man-saves-the-world’ piece, there’s the real poignancy of Paula Patton being the surrogate ‘white’ woman. In the book Paula Patton’s role was portrayed as that of a dark skinned woman.
You’ve really got to look closely at these things.
The only reason they let Spike Lee do Malcolm is because the man is dead, never to inspire, support or extend any of his ideals.
Most movies have ‘the magic Negro’…where the black man in spite of his accomplishments , always saves ‘massa’ from his own wickedness..in spite of his oppression, history of racism and white supremacy.
Other movies depict black men in n’er do well roles (Precious is no different…with only a slight nod of decency given to Lenny Kravitz as the male nurse).
God bless Spike Lee, The Hughes brothers, the lady that did A Dry White Season, Athol Fugard, Bill Duke and others who’ve done their part to present black PEOPLE (and especially black men) as multidimensional, diverse, spiritually guided, moral, virile and loving beings.
Tyler Perry is taking some time to get there but at least in the meantime he’s employing the best and brightest of our skilled technicians, artists and craftsmen/women. He’s got issues with positive black men because of his own youth but I see where he’s trying and that’s all I can ask.
I remember flicks like Nothing But A Man with Abby Lincoln and Ivan Dixon and A Man And A Boy with Bill Cosby and Gloria Foster. These were simple stories that had all of the racism and oppression as a backdrop but were neither blaxploitive nor heavy-handed morality tales. Instead they were simple stories of love and survival while never presenting the black man with any superhero/gimmicky devices nor did they make the black woman stronger than her man or as some sexually promiscuous insatiable being.
We need more flicks like this. I for one would love to se a ‘black’ Bridges of Madison County sort of vehicle with the likes of Denzel and Angela Bassett.
As long as there is a glimmer of truth to these (negative/stereotypical) depictions they will be greenlighted and these myths perpetrated.
In the long run that’s cool.
The problem is there’s just not enough balance from the ‘other’ more ‘Cosby-esque’( sorry, that’s the best word I can come up with) side. We ARE doctors, lawyers, accountants and nurses.
We don’t always molest and get pregnant through rape or out of wedlock. There ARE kick ass black men that work within the confines of this racist, oppressive system who DO triumph and serve as models of hope and truth for us all…we just never if ever get to see them and when we do they either go unnoticed or they are presented with little or no fanfare or hype.
We’ve got to dig a little deeper to find these presentations and do what we’ve always done…use the beat of the drum…the word-of-mouth that has allowed us to survive thusfar.

What? Are we afraid to reveal our dirty little secrets? Or are we being hypersensitive on this subject. We do not need a movie like Precious to know that whites pity us. Hollywood’s been playing that tune for years. I choose to focus on the positive aspects of this film: the film debut of Gabourey Sidibe; the talents of Mo’nique, Mariah Carey, and Lenny Kravitz; and another successful film directed by Lee Daniels. We in the black community should praise their efforts by supporting this film. As you know, by doing so, we guarantee that more quality films based on our culture will be greenlighted in the future.

Unless you would rather spend your money on Soul Plane: The Sequel.

First of all we need to stop the excuse that everything is racial. I saw Precious twice and I loved it. For me it’s saying even though you’re abused or brought up in a household like Precious was that you can overcome. I loved the ending how she collected her most PRECIOUS people and strolled into a new way of life “Success”. They earned the nomination.

Why must everything be racist like the menu at a tv station is called racist because they cooked fried chicken and collard greens. In fact they’re showing the chef cooking it at this moment on tv. Most people like chicken and collard greens. I wish we had a menu like that at work. Stop making excuses and get the hell out of there and work it. We don’t have to make millions to have a happy and successful life.

What worries me about this article, are the people that are going to read this article without ever seeing the movie or reading the book and they are going to form an opinion based upon these faulty words. I have read the book as well as seeing the movie, and it made me realize that it is time for us to start taking accountability in our community. I am in a word infuriated.

There are faults within in the criticism that are being made, she was not saved by whites, but by her own community which a I thought was a very poignant message in the movie. As much as we want to deny it, her situation,is they story of millions. The problem lies in the fact that whenever we are told the truth about what is going on around us, there is a finger pointed across the racial lines but we don’t take the time to realize that three fingers are pointed back at us. It is time for accountability and change in our community. White people wouldn’t have to “save us” if we were saving ourselves, our children, our community.

With that I also have to put on the table that every woman and I mean every woman has been a victim of sexual indiscretion whether it has been through words or a touch, and what kills me about our community is that we raise hell over a movie meant to wake us up, but yet R.Kelly is still considered a beacon of genius. Wake up folks its time for a revolution in our ways of thinking.

I agree with BlueSexyRose, SoCo_nest12, and Pleasure 246 100%. My experience with the movie was this: People were laughing at the things Monique was saying in that movie. They weren’t even looking at the seriousness of the movie. They were looking at her Monique as the comedienne, not character she was portraying, which I found nothing funny at all that she said or did. She portrayed a character that had some real issues. Mind you, this audience was BLACK okay! No one took the reality of the movie seriously at the showing I went to. I thought it was a very good movie and it was a sad one. No it didn’t leave you with an uplifted feeling. But neither did Shcindler’s List, Amistad, or Rosewood. Precious was a real one. And now people have all this to say about what it looks like to white America. We as black people need to calm down. Because we have so many schools that cannot get the participation of our BLACK parents in PTA meetings and schools are closing because the test score percentage is so low. I have gone to concerts with black artists as the headliners and the audience is majority white. Our own people don’t really support our own in alot of instances. But if it some group singing about sex and running around the stage like idiots is a headliner you can get every teen that won’t go to school to show up for that. And that crowd is majority BLACK! Look at how the Arabs have our communities filled with corner stores. And we support them. The chinese have taken over the hair business and we support them everyday.
So the things that really need to be addressed are far bigger than PRECIOUS. I am glad the author wrote about her experience with the children she had worked with. It is sad. The enemy is at large and we turn our faces from God and refuse to seek His face. What will you do today, that can bring peace in the life of a child like Precious or enhance our community?

As a child advocate I can assure you that there are girls like precious in almost every city in this WORLD. In hospitals across this country, girls as young as 12 are delivering babies, usually conceived from some “unknown” source. The article suggests that these girls would run away but where exactly do you suggest they run? It is unfortunate that the screenplay focused on only the black characters. In the BOOK, that the movie was based on every girl in Precious’ classroom was a victim of some form of incest or pimping by her parent. The girls in the classroom were from all races. The movie chose to only highlight Precious and that is where I fault the movie. There were other choices like the dream sequences that I think could have been left out in exchange for a wider discussion of the issues but it was not my film. This country and the world need to wake up to the pimping and raping of young girls and boys by their families. There are some seriously sick adults out here who need to be exposed, stopped and jailed. Precious gave a glimpse of negative and positive black people. I realize that the positive blacks were lighter complexioned but that too is the fault of BOOK, historic attitudes within our own community, and resulting screenplay. I agree that the blind side which also received accolades was disgusting. There was not one positive black peron in the movie that suggests that we need black people to save us. But then I ask how many of you have donated a single hour toward mentoring our children? How many have donated a single dollar? Programs like the one that Precious attended receive much of their funding from WHITE organizations. Black colleges are begging alumni to donate. Mentoring programs for black children are filled with White mentors and I suspect the numbers of them will grow while the black community continues to complain, spend millions of dollars on material things for our children, stay in the house in fear of the bad influences in our neighborhoods, and do nothing.

ITS A WAY OF LIFE FOR SOME WHITE PEOPLE IN AMERICA, BUT IN THE CIVILIZED WORLD THAT IS NOT OK..NEVERMIND THE MOMMA BEING A CRACKDEALER..NOT USER..IF PRECIOUS WERE PORTRAYED IN WHITE LIGHT..IT WOULD HAVE OUTSOLD AVATAR..LOL..NOT FUNNY

I really don’t get the point of this article. It said that it fed into the notion that Blacks need to be rescued by whites and that it never shows the impression of White America on Black & Brown people. If I recall that all the teachers shown in the movie were White. The principal thought that this young lady could benefit from attending a school that was ran by let’s see “two black women”. And to think that this is a form of somebodies reality, Black, White, Latino, African, so on and so forth, you have got to be living in a fantasy world were you are the only person that exist. The way we have kids coming out of school who can’t read, write, add & subtract, that only know how to kick it, have sex really well, cuss, and quote rap music, who raise themselves. I mean we talk all this s**t but the truth is the black race is jacked up and we aren’t trying to help our own. I’m reminded of the boy that was killed in front of hundreds of people adult and kids and no one said a damn thing, why, because of their own self survival. When ever we get through, most of us see the issues but we won’t get involved because it won’t necessarily benefit us, at the end of the day. We have to understand, we can not change what we do not confront or acknowledge, If Precious causes people to look deeper at the psychological abuse, physical abuse, and the truth for many people, than great. Get off the stupid horse people and get on the train of causing change. We have always had ignorant black folk who have been afforded the opportunity to avoid such things in their lives and they forget about the reality that exist for so many who are in poverty. If I recall, it was Precious Black momma and Black Daddy that gave her grief. It would not have made a difference of rather she was overweight or had Aids or not, it is a real issue that we need to discuss in honesty with an outcome of a solution. Bring that Casey Gane-McCalla, not this sort of article, let’s have real dialogue about the issues that are mentioned in this movie.

    thed_msp and scooter…I’m feeling y’all.
As a musician it’s soooo disheartening to see acts like the Neville Brothers, Leelah James, Kid Creole and the Coconuts and even Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings to name a few that are playing gut-bucket funk n roll and nary a black person is EVER present in the audience.
You are also right in your assertations that there are so much heavier issues with which we need to deal. HOWEVER, I beleive that one of the FIRST issues we need to put a spotlight on is our own representation in the media.
Just ike the census is supposed to help us with funding and governmental representation etc., what is presented as ‘us’ influences what ‘us’ gets on a global scale.

One of the reasons that so much goes on and is accepted today is because many of our people have lost the will to fight believeing that finally we’ve ‘got it all’ and all is well.
Those of us born in the 50′s and 60′s know better. The fight continues.
Look at much of the commentary by the young people right here. They wish we’d just ‘cut it out’ as far as these observations pertaining to these stereotypically racist depections.
we’ve come a ways but we still got a long way to go.
when I hear black folk say they don’t want to participate in the census and then go to a MAC machine…well …need I say more?
The bottom line is you or I or anyone black for that matter can be irreversibly eliminated with a mere keystroke on somebody’s computer. No Soc. Security…no record of your existence…NOTHING.
Precious is merely a PAGE in the book of atrocity that is black life in America…and it aint all self-perpetuating either!

I did not like “Precious” because it was a bad movie. I failed to see anywhere in your comments the recommendations from Oprah and Tyler Perry. I don’t understand why. You seem to focus on one comment from Barbara Bush. I understand why. It makes for a better story and it helps you play it safe. Hate the white man and ignore the others of our color who perpetuated and promoted the movie. What is more “Damaging”? What is the truth? If you want change, look for it from within.

I have to respectfully disagree with you about the issue of race concerning this film. I would not call this film racist but it is symptomatic and problematic of power and control and who decides which films are produced, marketed and distributed that depicts the Black experience. Hollywood continues to refuse to show us in films that represent the complexity of the Black experience in America or our rightful place in world history. Some say it’s just a movie but these imagines work on the subconscious mind to form opinions and these opinions forms attitudes and beliefs. We inject this poison on a daily basis as well as people around the world who watch our media.

I live in Asia, I have lost count of the number of people who have asked me if I could sing, dance, rap, play basket ball or run well. I have been told by some that they were scared of Black people prior to meeting me because they thought all Black people were gangsters. Their simplistic view of us was formed by the way we are portrayed in our media. It was not until I lived overseas and saw our media as an outsider then I could understand the power of images. We don’t even control the images of ourselves. Yes, there are movies staring White people that shows them in a negative light but there are enough movies that are produced each year that people can see Whites in many roles and varied depictions of their experience. Black people don’t have this luxury because our movies and images are few. Think about the last time you have seen a Hollywood romance with Black people as leads? White people (especially White men) have historically had issues with Black sexuality and since White men decides which films get financed and produced none are made. I wish that the diversity of the Black experience could be shown to ourselves as well as to people around the world but until we get some type of control it will never change. Images are powerful.

I’m getting tired of my fellow black people finding racism in everything. There are no racial undertones in this movie about white people saving the black derelict. This article should be praising the bravery of the author and those involved in making the film making come to fruition. When my wife and I went to the movie, the audience was predominantly older black folk, who thought the abuse that Precious received was funny. That is an issue that needs to be addressed. Why would anyone think that is funny. If any of those people saw one white person laughing at the things they were laughing at, they would have rioted. Stop playing the race card for inane reasons. I believe those quick to say something is racist without knowing all the facts are in fact racist themselves. And yes Black people, you can be a racist, trust me I unfortunately know a few.

I did not care for this movie. I thought it was bordering on the edge of the toilet as far as entertainment is concerned. There is a reason that certain actors should consider roles that could be blacklist them in Black hollywood. After I saw the movie I never wanted to see Monique again. I did not have a desire to even watch her talk show. It may have been a real life story drama however the subject matter of a mother who is sexually abusive to her daughter and then portraying sexual abuse that was allowed to happen to her daughter was too much. The picture of a pschologically unsound mother who allows her child to be molested right in front of her is just awful. I was forced to finish watching the movie. It literally made my skin crawl. What is entertaining about that? I really don’t care to see them on the red carpet for the movie. I know it was acting, but it was what the actors allowed their likeness to be portrayed as society rejects. People who would go to jail if a community found out about what was going on behind closed doors. This is not entertaining in an age where this sort of thing happens in reality.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tanya_kennedy/ tanya_kennedy

Wow sine I have not yet seen the movie it makes me wanna see it more. however as a victim of abuse at a young age I understand the outrage of some of us because the subject matter is very serious. however the only difference between this movie and the color purple…..2 things 1 there was no aids back then and there was no hero white person. And I know this answer is not gonna be popular however no one wants to see all the problems of their community rolled into one person. and then the person who helps the monster that has been created by rolling all that into one person is not from the community that the monster comes from. But for real I know a kid right now that can relate to Precious. and the problems the movie displays are not all present but enough of them are there to make her pretty darn close. like if i broke down all that she has gone through you would swear it was not All true but it is……. so i think although Barbara bush is not my favorite lady she is right about one thing….. we pass by people similar to precious EVERY day and we do not know it. Our society has lost site of God and so the result is thousands of young people like this girl in this movie. and SHHHHHHH they are not all black…as a matter of fact there are probably more of them that are white who are just like precious. JERRY JERRY JERRY oops but you get the picture. Tanya

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Elpee/ Elpee

By the way Dark One…until you’re bigotry or prejudice (which is something that black folk in America CAN be) somehow prevents anyone from life, liberty or their pursuit of happiness then you CAN’T be a racist. You don’t know ANY black folk with that sort of power in this country..especially over white people…not even President Obama…let him even THINK he’s gonna try something like that and see what happens.
Consequently it’s virtually IMPOSSIBLE for you to be racist. Look it up and dig the FULL meaning of the word.
You can be bigoted or prejudiced (and you tell me who really isn’t in some way) but never racist.

The movie Precious gave me the same feeling of revulsion that I got when I watched Halle Berry’s ” Oscar Winning Performance ” in that ridiculous portayal as a another dumb black woman who is abused and degraded. Why was either film even nominated for an Oscar, Halle was considered by the media to be the number 1 ” Black Actress ” and not until she got nekkid and F…ed by a white man and made to crawl around on the floor and beg to be F…ed by a white man was she considered worthy of an Acadamy Award that was a very mediocre at best acting job by Halle but white america embraces the degredation that we project in films of Our black women even if the movie and the acting is sub par as long as the masses get to see ” Blacks being Black !!! I have been Black and lived in the inner city for 45 years and I have yet to meet anyone Black who thought either portayal was positive or emlightening. Two sterotypical racist Hollywood crap ! They just give us the job of ” Clowning Our Own Race on Film ” for Americas amusement.

Just saw the movie last night. I loved it. End of story. people who do reviews on movies need to understand how to review a movie. Precious reminds us of the human spirit and how we sometimes need help brushing all the dirt and garbage that has been piled on top of it in our lives. How somebody can get beaten down physically, mentally and emotionally but still not lose love and an image of a good life. Notice how even when her mother was treating her like sh*t she still held onto an image that made her feel good and loved. Thats a human story not a race one.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1man4allseasons/ 1man4allseasons

First of all, people must find out how movies are financed. The producer, in this case, Lee Daniels, takes the script to rich friends, let them read it and they decide to back it or loan money for it to be made. With that being said, there is a black person behind the the making of this movie. Period. Now for the eye opener. Have you ever stood on a bus stop or been on a bus for that matter or even a train and seen the young black mother scream and curse at a 1yr old, 2yr old child like they can understand their actions. Mistake number one. How about young brothers and sisters selling drugs in our own communities raping children of drug addicted parents of a decent home, life and ultimately a future. How about the awful rap music of black people glorifying drug dealing as a way out. Mistakes 2 and 3. The problem is, I could go on and on about the disasterous black community. But black folk get upset when checked by the white man when we leave ourselves open to it. Black people need to wake the hell up and see that we are our own worst enemies and until we stand up and better ourselves then and only then can we complain. Furthermore, the state of the black race is in turmoil thanks to negative thinking that drug dealing is the only way out. Go pick up that movie the great debaters and see for yourself how the black family should live and teach their children. So as much as we love to blame our problems on white people, please look in the mirror. And the story was on one young woman’s life but did anyone see the happy ending. She decided not to let where she came from stop her from where she wants to go. She was a strong woman in the face of NOTHING but adversity. The universities and community colleges should be overrun by black men and woman but then that’s asking most of us to work hard for a better life but we can’t stop getting our CHILL on to do that. Are you crazy?! WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE. I don’t care who don’t like it but I’ve been around some white folks that cared more about me than my own kind due to nothing more than jealousy. “I look at my enviroment and wonder where the fire went. What happen to everything we used to be?” Lauren Hill.

No I don’t agree. What is wrong with our people. The imagine “Precious” is real. Why do we keep denying it. I remember when the movie “color Purple” came out. The Black community condemned it. Wake up!!!! Open your eyes. We must work together as a community to stop this abuse. Abuse knows no race. But shame does. How many more of our children must suffer if we keep quiet. And how dare you put down the hard work that the director and actors put into this work. Maybe those who are critizing this movie see themselves in Precious. Something to thing about

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sweetdish_416/ sweetdish_416

Precious…wow, never saw it. Read the book, very sad. At times blacks are extremely sensitive to actual facts, isn’t this movie based on an actual person’s life. How can the events be changed to accomodate for the protrayal of black sterotypes. Come on people. No matter how we claim we don’t want the white sympathy vote, alot of movies, music videos bring down blacks more. This move should be inspirational it shows that no matter what was placed before this young girl she rose over it….as blacks we rise above alot. No matter what is done to oppress us we still rise. Instead of looking at sterotypes look at the positivity of the movie, and elaborate on that, express it and show that no matter what smaller problem each of us have we can over come it. Precious did, why can’t we.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MsCassann/ MsCassann

I just wonder which community does this writer lives in. By all account not the black community. As a counselor in the Black Community there are many Precious out there, but like always we in the black community like to stick our heads in the sand and pretend that the problem does not exist. Until we wake up and realize that there is a problem in the black community there are going to be many more precious out there. Don’t think for a minute that some black mothers and fathers are not having sex with their children, just because you do not know somone who has been morlested does not mean the situation does not exist.

I am a beautiful black woman who thought Precious was an awesome movie and a great portrail of EACH and every household in America more white homes than black actually. So i didn’t look at it as just being a black problem it was just that they used wonderful black actresses to bring the issue to light. So as black persons we should not be so sensitive to this issue because it really goes on in almost every family in America.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1man4allseasons/ 1man4allseasons

BTW…we all know and have seen mothers like the one Monique portrays and if you don’t then you are blind and stupid. Black people need to take pride in themselves and their communities. And another thing, when are the rich black folk going to stop bragging about how much money they got from drug dealing and parlayed into fortunes while little black boys and girls go to bed hungry or without the basic neccesities of life. Here it is we finally have a black president and he’s critized thoroughly by blacks. And HelloBeautiful and these other gossip writers should look for a real human interest story in their black communities instead of whether Keri is flashing her assets or the other stupidness that I see on the site. As a black man, I wonder why we as a people are still trying to find racial clue in every little thing that done. I don’t deny that it still exist because I know better, however, God has given us the same opportunity despite what someone thinks about us. We are the people that are responsible for our communities and our actions within them, let’s grow up and face the injustices that we do to each other, why sweep it under the rug all the time.

Why is “Precious” considered a so-called “Black” movie. I am tired of this crap. Precious is a movie about “abuse” nothing about this movie says that this type of acitivity only occurs in the black community. The fact that the direct, producers and main actors are black does not make it a black movie. The story is one which written with a base point in a black community, because the author was perhaps writing from their own perspective, not because they wanted to write a story and black behavior. We should give the writers, and others more respect and credit for doing something as good as this film, rather than attempting to sterotype it in this “limiting” ,manner.

I read the book many years ago. Honestly, I do not believe that the movie did the book justice. I do not think this is stereotypical story. I see a story of hope. You have a illiterate young lady who wants to do better for herself and her children. She steps into the light and realizes that literacy is one important step in terms of getting her together. Incest goes across all cultural and racial lines. I believe that black people need to stop over analyzing everything. Every story that features a black character is not indicative of the ‘black’ experience. I think we get caught up and forget that we are diverse and not monolithic as American society tries to make us.

OK,these article are down right stupid! # 1 why do a black girl need white ppl to have pity on her??? #2 why was it so important to point out that the character is over weight? we could see that! #3 How could this movie be a stereotype if it a true story based on someone life! you’ll sound like educated morons………..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gee_tee/ Gee_tee

Although this movie was brought to light by a black man, I am sure his #1 motivation was the almighty dollar. I am sure he was aware that these controversial, negative and stereotypical stories about people in the black community are not aimed at pleasing the black audience rather than to entertain the larger white audience, therefore profitable . I don’t see this as a racial issue, I see it as anything for the almighty dollar. If this is a film to open the eyes of of blacks or “taking the head out the sand”, why not do films about the obvious problems and reasons behind it, (poverty, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, education) it could even be done with a happy ending. Even though Oprah and Tyler Perry back this movie, it doesn’t make it any better for me, they themselves profit from black stereotypes in movies and yes with the “pity factor” from whites. An example of an actor in movies that were Oscar worthy and portray us in a good light are ‘Seven Pounds’, ‘I am Legend’, ‘Pursuit of Happiness’ by Will Smith. There are many others, but these are just examples of us being caring, intelligent and ambitious. These movies were backed by white producers and not strongly endorsed by Tyler Perry or Oprah. As a previous member wrote, we need to stop blaming everything on racism and look within ourselves. We need to support the films that portray us in a positive light, it would be good for our children and our communities. We are not ignoring the bad by embracing the good, just a need for more movies about role models without the ‘pity factor’. I am not hating on anyone trying to make a profit but he or she should be called out on how it is done. The almighty dollar is not everything only. Stay Blessed People.

This really gets under my skin. I have never commented on any other article but I feel the need now. I’m white and the movie almost made me get up and walk out. As a mom I couldn’t handle it. It had nothing to do with me being white. I myself know more then a few white women and girls who had a bad home life and were rapped by their fathers, who are not well educated and are over weight. Does that represent all white people if they had a movie about thier life? NO! Myself or any of the other people that saw this even put a black label on this story, it was a story about that girls life. The people from the book and the movie that really helped her get out of that situation were not white. I swear the only thing that is holding us back from becoming a world of people and not race is our perceptions of ourselves as white or black instead of as a shared human family.

This IS A FAKE STORY people….jeez, it started off as a fictional book the author’s name is Sapphire. This story is not REAL, but now since we got the jews behind it and a couple of “happy, self-hating negros” some of us believe that this s**t goes on.

Of course “white” people are going to like this movie, it degrades Black people all around. And it uplifts white people because they swoop in to save the day. God People wake the F up.

I agree with wiseguy007. The movie lost some of the concept from the book. Which is why some books should never be put into film. We as a people don’t like things like this and are repulsed by it. However, these things do happen. What matters is that “Precious” and many do choose if given the opportunity to rise above their circ**stances and that is what is important. These same hands of poverty, that picked cotton, now pick presidents. We now have a Black president. I think the movie just told one of many stories of our people that are still in a struggle for a better life no matter how challenging.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sosogood33/ sosogood33

Why do we always have to judge everything on what white people think? That’s where we’re going wrong. Even the very headline to this story screams it as us! Sure they control everything but surely black America(and beyond) is big enough to validate itself. I think we should congratulte our people who have taken steps represent us and i think Precious deserves our support. Here in the UK where we do not seeem to have the talent, resources etc to emulate our American counterparts, I am glad to see such a film. I enjoyed Precious for the gritty storyline, the excellent acting and diverse representation of black characters.remember the nice teacher? and all Precious classmates who stood by her?
Yes, Hollywood may only give an award to such storylines from our communities, but at least we’re out there. Lets support our black directors, actors, writers and artists in general and maythey go from strength to strength.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chamberslee38/ chamberslee38

First, this is an Op-Ed piece, and it has merit. Most white people do not know about the real lives of black people and are very likely to see the movie as a true depiction of ALL of black America. Consequently, the movie may validate many peoples’ stereotypical beliefs about black people (criminal, lazy, undisciplined, welfare queen, and so forth), which is often used to perpetuate negative and discriminatory practices and policies that have and continue to outcast and oppress people of color for centuries. One of the most valid points in the article is that white America views the issues in the movie are a result of Black culture instead of accepted practices and harmful policies.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Hicutie77/ Hicutie77

“Precious” was a movie about a young poor teenage girl, who happened to be black. And I am not sure of what movie the author of this article or the commentators were watching, but the “Heros” in this movie were STRONG BLACK WOMAN. I was born and raised in Chicago, IL and have been witness to many horrible, disgusting and unheard of things done to both girls and boys. My race is only a goverment catogory for me and I give it NO weight, there for my belief is that the world should not pay attention to the shade of your skin tone as apposed to your character. The moment we realize that this is a problem in ALL communities AND social status’, will be the moment that we can help these poor unfortunate souls from further damage. Please be advised that this, is a real problem for so many children. And if the story was about a poor white girl from the
‘trailer park’, then what? Be honest. First all how many of you would have watched, and then for the few who may have, would it have meant anything?! Probably not. This movie was made, in my opinion, to raise awareness. And to let the world know THAT ALL CHILDREN MATTER! Come on people, this is about “RIGHT & WRONG”!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TheWalkingFlu/ TheWalkingFlu

I agree with dianashort2005. It’s not about the blacks looking at this movie as stereotypical, it’s the whites like Babara Bush that are assuming that this is something that is common in black communities. I’ve lived in a ghetto for 15 years and I’ve never met anyone with AIDS ( But who tells people? ) and I’ve only ever known like one or two illiterates. One of which was Hispanic. Call me blind but I don’t see these as prevalent issues facing the black community. I think Gang violence would have been a better route to take if they wanted to gain pity while stereotyping us.

Like when I was in college as the only black male in class and they wanted the black perspective. I would always say i am not paying 1500 per class to give you perspective. Thats why i hate the whole premise of black history month or being called an african american it minimizes my blackness. white american has been doing it for years under the guise of intergration and the black establishment so quick to be up whitey’s butt cant see the forrest thru the trees. then when blacks do finally get on tv its some disparaging role.the very reason i dont really go to movies now. i really dont need any white person speaking as if they know the american black experience. If they want to do that im sure they are plenty of poor whites in trailer parks they can write about. not that i go to the movies anyway.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/118957/ 118957

If this is a movie based on a true story, then what is the problem? Is this something that happened to the author? Then why are we upset. Oprah knew what she experienced as a young girl (rape and incest) that’s why she indorsed it. Are we really familar with Tyler Perry’s story? He also is a victim of rape and incest. We in the Black community don’t want to face our demons. Instead we want to bury our heads in the sand and blame others. Yes we are still dealing with the residual effects of slavery (straight hair, self hatred, saggin pants) but we must know that we are sick in order to get well. We’ve taken the chains off our bodies, now we must take the chains off our brains. Maybe this movie can shed some light on some things that are happening in someone’s life (girl or boy) and they will realize that this is wrong. Remember when Dr. Cosby made his comments at the NAACP event? We didn’t like that either. We must face what is wrong with us or else it will never go away. White people don’t have to do a thing to us. We are doing to ourselves.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/rochelle1210/ rochelle1210

I saw the movie and it made me cringe. Why because unfortunately, there are children who live like this and that could be any skin color. It was deeper than just the movie. I saw mother in a very deep and dark place and she took that out on her daughter. I saw a daughter that was beaten and verbally abused. I saw mothers only concern was that welfare check. These things are happening to our children and I think we don’t won’t to really know can someone really do this to their own child and the answer is yes. Monique said it when she said we can now start talking about it. She was molested by her brother. She said that is where she went when she played the part.

Personally, I do not know anyone that has been abused. But I was in the park on Mother’s Day and it was about 8 young mothers say between (15 – 25) with a gallon of Hennessey. One of the children who was about one was doing what a one year old child should do, he just learned how to walk. Because that child would not stop walking that young girl cursed that baby out. And I do mean cursed him out. You would have thought she was talking to a grown a$$ man. In my mind, I thought, if this is what he is getting done to him at one, I can’t even imagine what his life is going to be like. We have to break the cycle.

I was very disappointed to see your opinion of why Precious was nominated 6 times for the Oscar and who you thought the movie was made for. Speaking for all women who have been abused, molested, or raped by family members – you’re an idiot!
Personally, I’m as bigoted as they come and don’t have no use for white folks, but I’m not so pigheaded that I can’t see the truth. Barbara Bush is right. People are being terrorized in their own homes, and I don’t care what the color of the family is.
And where is this white person that is the savior of Precious? Prayer and Hope are what save Precious. In fact the only white person I saw in the movie wasn’t white! Mariah Carey is Black baby. I didn’t even finish reading your article because it is crap.
The truth may not be comfortable, but it’s not supposed to be.
As uncomfortable as Precious is to watch, (and I cried through the whole thing), it is a necessary moment to heal the lives of millions from a safe place.
Be a victim first. Put yourself in their place before you start using your words, which reach a lot of people, spouting nonsense and bullsh*t.
We may not be the only race doing this crap, but at least we are looking into it, dead in the face of our fear, and taking the mask off. You don’t know how many people of all races that this movie helped.
    You’re an idiot. Print that.

Wow. I haven’t seen the movie, possibly for the same reason I haven’t seen Blind Side. Still waiting for Hollywood to grasp more facets of the black race beyond “downtrodden” and “funny”.

I want to know why everytime a black person does something it has to represent the ENTIRE community? If it was a movie about black professionals that would not represent the ENTIRE black community…**

It’s called Public Relations. The best of the white race is generally used as the representation of “typical”. Conversely our worst are presented to society as “typical”.

Should this really surprise ANYONE who understands white people?

Denzel, after all of the quality work he has done, finally won an Oscar for for Training Days. A movie in which he used the N-word a jillion times. Haille Berry won an Oscar for Monster’s Ball. Another movie that was degrading to black people. Both movies loved by white folks and hated by black folks.

Again, exactly why should this surprise anyone that this movie is loved my white folks and hated by black folks?

    @mwright_kami
The point is that when film makers take a positive film to the studios they remember CRAP LIKE THIS. Again, I haven’t seen it but the trailer had nothing in in worth paying $8-12 for.

Does anyone know who played the father?

Does anyone think the story should have focused more on his part in it all?

Would you have stayed through all of that? Did any school, or whatever official just look by the fact that she was pregnant with no boyfriend? Twice?

That’s a knock against the institution but to substitute an institution that DOESN’T see both parents under the jail being abused, there is no winner. A person who’s JUST learning to read at 16 will take until 25 just to get a “HS diploma” which would have to be done with two kids with birth defects.

As I say, Lee Daniels doesn’t have respectable women in either of his Oscar bids. What does that tell you?

I HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE AND FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD I AM NOT GOING TOO BECAUSE I KNOW IT WOULD MAKE ME CRY, BUT THAT MOVIE IS ABOUT REALITY. FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD IT DOES HAPPEN TOO MUCH IN OUR BLACK COMMUNITY. WHITES ARE HAPPY ABOUT THE MOVIE BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN DOING INCEST WITH THEIR CHILDREN FOR SO LONG AND NOW THEY CAN SAY “SEE BLACKS DO IT TO THEIR CHILDREN TOO”, LIKE THAT MAKES IT RIGHT. I THINK IT’S REALLY A SICKENING THING WHEN FATHERS AND MOTHERS WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH THEIR OWN CHILDREN. THAT IS PAST DEPLORABLE, OR ANY RELATIVE WITH A MEMBER OF THEIR FAMILY. THEY NEED TO BE TO PUT UNDERNEATH A DAMN JAIL. IF I WAS THE JUDGE AND YOU CAME BEFORE ME AFTER YOU HAVE MOLESTED OR RAPED SOMEONE I WOULD JUST CASTARATE YOUR ASS AND BE DONE WITH IT. ANY GROWN PERSON THAT CAN’T FIND ANOTHER GROWN PERSON TO HAVE SEX WITH NEEDS TO BE LOCKED UP MESSING WITH A CHILD. IT’S JUST SAD THAT KIND OF THING HAPPENS TO ANY CHILD DOESN’T MATTER WHAT COLOR. IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH FOR A RACIST PERSON TO FIND FAULT WITH BLACKS ANY LITTLE THING AND THEY RUN WITH IT TO MAKE THEMSELVES FEEL BETTER. I ALSO DON’T LIKE THE TITLE AFRICAN AMERICAN. SO WHEN I FILL OUT APPLICATIONS OR ANYTHING REFERRING TO MY RACE I DECLINE TO ANSWER. JUDGE ME BY WHAT I BRING TO THE HOUR NOT WHAT I LOOK LIKE.

“This IS A FAKE STORY people….jeez, it started off as a fictional book the author’s name is Sapphire. This story is not REAL, but now since we got the jews behind it and a couple of “happy, self-hating negros” some of us believe that this s**t goes on.
Of course “white” people are going to like this movie, it degrades Black people all around. And it uplifts white people because they swoop in to save the day. God People wake the F up”

The following is a responds to that hanus comment:
The story is based of real events, Nobody said that these exact events happened to one person in their lifetime, but a sequence of events to many people in the world. How can you say her situation is fake, and these things do not happen to anyone? Have you been around the world, met every single person in this world? If not you have no grounds to stand on when you say “This IS A FAKE STORY people…”

The way you just presented your self is wrong, african americans have worked their asses off to get where they are now, and people like you plateau your race. Unfortunately a long time ago blacks were used as slaves, but your race over came such an obstacle, and Im SO proud to be HUMAN, to know that someone can over come such hardship is a real inspiring peice of evidence.

Before you run your mouth and try and say White people like it because its degrading your wrong.

I am white and I love the story and I love how she over comes those things in her life, and we need more movies out there that actually show us the reality of life. Not everything is sugar coated and this movie really shows us how to be human, how to love, and how to over come.

People, stop placing your self lower then anyone, if you constantly bring up slavery and being black is so hard, your not going to get anywhere. You need to say to your self, ‘Im worth it, Im not a slave, Im not going to listen to anyone but myself, and I will over come all obstacles in my life’

I read the book push about 10 years ago. The original setting was probably from the 80′s. When crack and aids was very real. This book was written by a very intelligent writer. A black writer who was able to take the reader into the story, so far, that you did not know if you were reading fact or fiction. Bravo to Sapphire. For being able to write a book that makes people feel and think. White writer do it all the time. Critics ask yourself. How many books by white writers do you read. What type of books. Sapphire did not write anything different. She just wrote the same story of a girl who could be black, white, asian, native amerian or anything. She wrote the book damn well. Stop putting our people down for getting the worlds attention. Give them praise for breaking barriers and causing people to think and anaylis their emotions by reading the words that was written.

Will we ever stop blaming the White man for everything, come on people this movie was great because the things that happen to this young sister happens all the time we just don’t talk about it in the black community..The truth is the light, and it about time someone with gluts wrote about it..There are white girls being treated the same way, what would make you think that it don’t happens to black girls, come on black people we are smart lets not think dumb..What we can do is help each other so it will stop..It’s a good thing this movie is being considered for an Oscar because it proves “WHAT HID IN THE DARK WILL BE BROUGHT TO THE LIGHT”..You heard me…

Big ups!! You hit the nail dead on the head. For the most part White people decides what get financed, produced and distributed.

The question is not that film is bad but it’s who decides what films get produced that are representative of the complexity of the Black experience. When I worked for a TV production company in Hollywood for three years. I saw very quickly who controlled the power. It’s not any actor or director. It’s the people who finance, produce and distribute the product and it was of no great shock to me that none of these people were Black. This issue is far greater then just this movie. It an entire institution that has barred us from equal participation but controls the images of ourselves which are disseminate around the world. The sad truth is, I don’t see it changing any time soon.

It would appear that anything white people love Black people hate, reason being that it is usually at the expense of the character of Black people that the accolades are given. This is not to say that Precious doesn’t exist, this is also not to say that incest does not occur in Black families, however it is to say that more than a “Black Precious” exists and THAT is what is not portrayed on the silver screen. Once an image is displayed via the silver screen, it becomes a stigma, especially for Black people. Historically, we know that Black people as a collective have been portrayed in the most negative light possible, thus causing a stereotypical effect.

When the movie was first reviewed, the response from Black men was most vocal as they took offense to the portrayal of the representation of Black men in the movie, just as they did with the Color Purple. My objection to that was we played into the representation and not the FACT that men like Mister did exist and truth be told STILL exist and that fathers do molest their daughters. However, I understood that, perhaps, the issue was that the image was Black and enough negative imagery has been done to Black men. Still I think the protest was necessary to say that this; piled on top of all the other negative imagery of Black men was not to be internalized by the general public.

With the movie Precious and other movies that portray Black women in negativity, I can say the same, but the outcry from Black women was mostly a whisper. It’s as if a secret was exposed that we didn’t want exposed and once projected, we’re up from scrutiny. Now, every overweight, illiterate, dark skinned young Black woman…….with children, AND her mother and father, will psychologically be associated with Precious. The question will pop in the head of those who have internalized that movie: Has she or hasn’t she? Is that daddy her baby’s daddy?. Now every overweight, illiterate, dark skinned young Black woman…….with children will have the additional chore of dispelling that stereotype as if it applies to her. Every Black man with a overweight, dark skinned young black daughter, with children will be scrutinized. Yes, that question will also pop in the heads of folks: Does he or doesn’t he? Checking resemblances….. Even though the resemblance between the father and grandchild would be simple he is the child’s grandfather. And there are many grandchildren who look like their grandfathers and grandmothers, but the movie Precious will raise the scrutiny. And finally, every mother of this young woman will be more closely examined, is she just sitting at home, looking at television and playing with herself?

This has been a never ending cycle for Black people. Imagery sticks in the mind like glue and creates an association off the screen. As a full figured woman, who went through, teenage years and young adult years of battling being stereotyped from imagery, i.e. Sapphire, Aunt Jemima, the plantation cook, not to mention the woman who just loves Pine Sol and the woman at the amusement park squeezing her children’s heads to her breasts as she is frightened by the ride. Yeah, we’re all suppose to be jolly and greedy, as well as sassy, boisterous, overbearing, controlling and extremely aggressive, which are characteristics applied to Black women over all for the most part, but when you add the element of weight, it is extremely negative to the psyche of the full-figured Black female.

As one who in the past had to get a seat belt extender, I have endured this not only from white folks but Black ones too, and have had to resort to sassiness, boisterousness and aggression, just to get a semblance of RESPECT from folk or otherwise settle for being the butt of jokes or a damn doormat. Now here goes another round for my younger sisters, who may not even be as thick as the character, but who must bear the “weight”, if you will, just the same. They keep piling it own as the self esteem sinks lower and lower and the need to prove that, individually, larger women are not as characterized.

I thought we had finally gotten to the point that the 14+ Sister could still love herself and find love in spite of the stereotypical messages associated with the plus size woman, here we go, again. One thing I witness is larger young Black women who are of all shades and some are really obese, however, I see that they have not one child, but multiple children and babies; I KNOW that SOMEBODY is having sex with them, if not loving them for sure. The movie Precious now adds to the scrutiny or stereotype that “it’s the fellow who only comes by in the dark of night to perhaps it’s her daddy. Unbelievable, don’t you think?

When I saw just how many nominations this movie received, I thought to myself maybe they saw a different version of the movie. Personally I didn’t care for the film it was horrible! However for obvious white people are very different from black people. I heard that the director of “Precious” is working on a new project that deals with Dr. King in a very negative light. I don’t get this guy…

It would be nice if all of you that decide to post a comment about the movie would proof and edit before posting. The illiteracy and misspelling runs rampant in most of these posts! Black and White people alike! It is most apparent that we are all human and mistakes are made! PERIOD! Serious change can begin only when each of us does our very best to improve all those things within ourselves that are negative. We must also learn to Love, Accept, and Forgive one another! When will we realize that our differences are what makes us STRONG! I embrace different cultures, languages, and peoples, because it allows me to learn from each individuals experience! Everyone who posts a comment here is entitled to do so. How you as an individual receives the post is up to you! I learned a lesson long ago….I try to surround myself with people smarter than myself…when I do this I am continuously learning something new! “IF YOU ARE THE SMARTEST PERSON IN THE GROUP, YOU REALLY ARE THE BIGGEST DUMMY!” We MUST begin to take charge of our personal situations! You can only be belittled and made to feel inferior if you allow it to happen! Make Jesus Christ your source!! HE NEVER FAILS!!

It’s a shame to see NewsOne repeatedly put out blogs like this to fire up the ‘victim’ community. Most people regardless of color recognize this as a film of overcoming deep and painful real life situations. I didn’t see this or The Blind Side as a ‘white people saving the poor and helpless black community’…. I saw both as individuals overcoming extreme adversities in their lives. The ‘white people’ weren’t the saviours, the lead characters we’re the ones who saved themselves. You don’t think that there’s movies out there with other races portrayed the same way? Do you think two of the greatest movies out there, Glory and Remember The Titans, were about white people saving the blacks? Recognize that our country has a very negative past people, but don’t get sucked in and continue to hang onto the ‘the man is holding me down’ mentality….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shea_Bird32/ Shea_Bird32

Where oh where do I begin? This movie did what it was meant to do; bring a light into the homes of many by combining their pain into one person. I’m a black woman and no, I haven’t been through ALL of the things that Precious has. I have been through several of them; rape, molestation, abuse, and my self esteem was crushed over and over by words that were meant to push me forward and make me “strong”.

The problem we are facing here is that not enough people realize that the story told in this movie is not of just one person. The author combined the lives of several young ladies. Precious tells the story of many people. A story mind you, that many don’t tell because of the shame involved. Precious spoke to the pain I have inside me, and I really think you should stop generalizing that ALL black people don’t like this movie. There are those of us who get it.

Respect that pain, and let us celebrate the healing of being able to speak out without feeling abused again.

No as for white people loving precious, let’s not forget that rape, abuse, and yes incest is not just the problem of one race. All races have these same issues. Hatred, rage, ignorance, and pain are not racist, and doesn’t care how much money a person has. If only we could all see that, we might be able to get past a lot of the bulls**t that holds us all back (all people, races, and religions).

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Mina330/ Mina330

This has been going on for many years. For black actress or actors also with other races you have to be portrade in a negative light in order to win an Oscar. (Ex) Slum dog,Monsters ball and the list goes on. Lets face it the people who decide if our blacks and other races to win an oscar are white people. So what do you expect. We need to arise from these movies that harbours negative blatent messages and subliminal messages. We need to make more positive movies. As a social worker I have seen people like precious more in white community more then I have seen in the black community. But the whites covers there mess up well that you do not hear about it in the media. But then again the whites do control the media and we do allow them to pertrays us in that light and for them to feed us into to this BS. We talk but we dont do we need a change.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/swoose/ swoose

I saw the movie and felt that any woman who has been molested by a friend of the family, a family member, a date, a teacher or by someone that just wanted to gain control over another human being knew what this young girl was going through. To be hated by her own mother because the woman felt that her daughter had taken her man away also happens. All mothers are not loving and of course all fathers do not love or are protective of their children as they should be. I guess it’s just the animal in them. Of course, when these things are brought to light no one likes to see them. It’s not just in the Black community but it happens in every race and society and in every country. In this day and age we emphasize how important it is for our children to tell us if anyone touches them inappropriately and that lesson should start at home. Black, White, blue, green or purple “Precious” is not just a Black problem. Slavery was not just a Black problem. Prejudice is not just a Black problem. If you saw this movie or even if you didn’t see it, but read the comments, and the first thing you thought was that they were picking on Blacks, I think you should take a closer look at reality. Would you have felt the same indignation if the characters were of a different race? I don’t think so. We are all human beings and molestation, low self image, abuse is not just a Black problem, it’s a human problem. Precious could have been any young woman in this world. If you have had this experience I can understand wanting to hide from it. It’s not a very pretty sight BUT IT DOES HAPPEN. Maybe it should have made you angry enough to want to do something to stop it. Remember, she had help in rising about the situation.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/bowlegg1952/ bowlegg1952

You know to me the movie could have focus on a lot more issues that was present. But the movie was about Precious, living with her parents, and coping with some real s**t. I must admit at some of the drama that Monique played and she being herself find me laughing,at some screen in the movie.

But,this movie got us talking and thinking, this is not a racist movie, it about young black girls and boys being Mental,Physical and Spiritual, raped, degrade, made to feel worthless, by the peoples that they are supposed to trust and love.

If we all on here go back and think not to far in your past, and had suspicion of a child(s) being taking advance of by, relatives, friends, or a care giver, and did nothing about it, caused this is how we does it in your communities, it’s not ours business, even if it our relatives doing it.

So, I would like to challenge each and everyone of us to make a different, in a child life that we suspect this is going on now,or, even after the fact, by letting that child know she/he is love inspirited of these sick, ass peoples that has hurt them.

I have worked in a youth program where these kids walk around for years carrying the burden that it was there fault and never told a soul, caused their mothers wouldn’t believed or blamed them, so it’s their deep dark secret, until another Precious, come along, and I can almost guarantee the title’s of that movie will be”The True Life Story of Percy or Peachies, at The Age of Three” .

You know maybe the Barbara Bush’s and the non Black’s sure be the Gate Keeper of ours Black Children, caused we aren’t doing a good job at it,as long as they are safe, what does it matter who are the Gate Keeper.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/darqueknight1/ darqueknight1

I think people really need to stop generalizing. There are probably plenty of white people that hate the movie, and plenty of black people that love it. In fact, I enjoyed the movie, especially the acting of Monique as a crazy and abusive mom. She did an excellent job. There’s so much to be said about the way people view movies and how much of reality is reflected in them. Surely there are abusive black AND white families, and horrible situations like this in just about every race.

I totally disagree with this conclusion by the author: “…Precious was a bad movie that was meant for white people to feel pity for poor Black girls. The main character is in no way representative of the Black community.” No, it was a good movie that just happened to provide jobs to black actors and actresses about on type of real situation that does occur in the black community as well as other communities. We need to wake up and stop complaining stop seeing “racism” behind every door and under every rock.

I am so glad…I am not the only one that is just absolutely horrified by this piece of crap!! of a movie…what REALLY angered me…was that the director went to the Cannes Film Festival…and stated to reporters that we need to tell ‘our story’… WHAT THE HELL!!!! THIS MOVIE BY NO MEANS..ANY SHAPE OR FORM ‘REPRESENTS’ ‘OUR STORY’…I mean everyone in this movie had a problem!!! and I don’t speak alone when I say that I am tired of watching the Black Man trashed in movies….MOST BLACK MEN DIRT POOR OR RICH DO NOT RAPE THEIR DAUGHTERS!!! MOST BLACK MEN DO NOT HAVE TO BE DRUG DEALERS OR PIMPS IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES…We never hear about the positive brothas that work two jobs, go to school, support their families and even extended families…I mean if the writers and creators of this movie….which I believe has some really deep seated anger and trust issues…get counseling please!! you have the money to seek it!! Finally, it was so unrealistic…granted…the public system and social service system is very stressed as far as quality care…but someone….somebody…somewhere would have stepped in…be it a cop, teacher, social worker, school social worker, neighbor, business owner in the community, or friend in the neighborhood….This movie sheds such a bad light on teachers, social workers, and just people of authority in black communities…across the country! I like most of the actors and musicians in the movie…but I don’t think this movie should be praised at all…

    just my opinion..

Interesting posts. All I know is that after hearing all of the hype, I have been resistant to subjecting myself to that kind of pain. Even if it is for entertainment purposes only. Now I understand why I may be the only person on this planet who has not seen this movie.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ladyd121/ Ladyd121

Okay I thought the movie was entertaining but it was just that a movie. Some parts may be realistic such as a mother who hates her daughter and a father molesting her it happens all the time in black and white and other races but the odds of a girl having 2 kids by her dad and both having issues and all that other stuff it happens but not real common I’m sure. Now a days kids kill their parents so things have changed and alot of this is fictional. I don’t see any predjudice. My boyfriends mom however is very hateful towards white people and it rubbed off on him and I think the reason is because all her life she laid up and had 8 kids to a man she calls her “husband” but he never married her and she got welfare for her kids and now that they are all grown up she has gotten on SSI and I think she is predjudice because this is the way she chose to live and she hates white people because she doesn’t have any self esteem and she feels like they are better than he she is a hateful evil person always asking for a handout and she has all her kids including my boyfriend up under her and won’t let them leave her sight and him and I fight over this. I swear I hate that woman I really do. She is the 1st black woman I ever met that was predjudice and it is sickening all because SHE chose to live off the system her whole life!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

that’s true but…my thing is why is it…that when a Black is ‘praised’ the characters lifestyle is so controversial…I mean it’s like take Denzel..all the movies that he has done…why was he only really recognized for being a drug dealer? I mean I just don’t understand it…even Halle Berry in monster’s Ball…all of the movies she has done..and she was recognized for monster’s ball for freakin’ a white dude!!! I mean to me…it’s just unacceptable…this is the age of Obama…let’s move forward…and don’t get me wrong…i’m not saying cases like incest and rape within families doesn’t happen but…it’s unrealistic in terms that NOBODY helped her…and the social worker that was assigned to her case…COULDN’T HANDLE IT? and then walks out the office? In reality..she would have had her license revoked!! :o

    just my opinion.

because it happens much too often…not the fact that the move was about a black person or black people but…the content of the book or movie…that way too often gets praised….no one is saying that these issues don’t happen…but there is so much positive strength and beauty in our communities just as well that goes unnoticed…if it’s even ever looked at or read about at all…

I have came across people like the character in the movie but they were not all extremely overweight or illiterate. The black community here need to stop fronting like abuses of all kind does not go on behind close doors. So many black young people are abused, looking for love in the wrong places, and living destruction lives in our communities all over. Stop being blind to the bs going on in your family and take a stand to protect the young ones. I hated to say it but the racist organizations in this country are sitting back laughing because we are killing and destroying each others over pure ignorance.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/nequia99/ nequia99

I look over a few comments but had to stop, most are all the same. For the ones that don’t know Precious was based on the book “Push” by Sapphire; a black woman. I watch the movie as well as read the book, both was an eye opener. Many children can not read, many childern are being molested, it’s not a black or white thing it’s life of many in this world. ? How many of you love Boz in the Hood? A black movie that glorified black on black crime. Yet many loved that movie, as it because of Ricky the only one who wanted a better life. Now what does that say to black youth, live in the hood, die in the hood?

again…I understand rape and incest happens in every community…but all too often black characters are portrayed in a negative light…i should say this…THIS IS NOT ‘EVERYONE’S’ STORY!!! yeah they’re laughing because the only awards that we get and praises for are the drug dealers, hoes, abuser, the flashy athlete or the runaway slave……whoopi goldberg’s character in ghost was the only one that i can think of that wasn’t degrading…what happened to an award going to the teacher, social worker, doctor, lawyer, or better yet the average everyday hardworking Black Man or Woman that is positive…whether they’re rich or poor..

I don’t agree at all….why are blacks always crabs in a barrel!! This is a fictional story wrote by a Black Man that was made with a BLACK cast (which is not happening in Hollywood these days). That is money for blacks and there was no white savior like in all the other movies, Precious’s teacher was a black women. I was not meant to be “The Black Story” it was the story of Precious’s life and could easily be a white girls life any day. Black folk think everything put out evolving blacks is suppose to portray them all as saints with no issues excepted being too pretty or too smart or too successful. Every imagine of blacks on TV or in the movies are not suppose to represent us as a whole culture, if blacks don’t learn to make that separation how do we expect any other race to not group us all together. Be happy for the brother and his cast of African American actors and actresses. It reminds me of what they say about Taylor Perry’s Productions he is employing his people and it his own people were not sooo SELF HATING they would stand behind and support these men and women. You want to attack someone go after Hollywood in general for not including enough range of black people in staring roles and casting. I love Denzel and Will but give some others a chance to be James Bond or something. I found the movie traumatizing myself, and that speaks to how well it was done, THEY DESERVE EVERY AWARD THEY GET!!! So all you, including Spike Lee stop being F***EN CRABS IN A BARREL!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LUV_KAT_101/ LUV_KAT_101

    WOW!
I remember sitting in church one Sunday and the person next to me said, “I feel as though he’s talking directly to me.” At that moment I remembered what my grandmother had told me. “That all messages are not for you, but when God’s words convicts you then it’s for you. I know who, and whose I am. Do you?

Ignorance is bliss, to say that this is not a real occurrence. That it doesn’t take place in the black community? That it some how sends a misrepresentation out about the Black Male, Obesity in Black Teens or stereotypes Black Family lifestyles is preposterous. Wake up and look around it represented America and the entire world. You will find that people disrespect and hurt other people and families tend to hurt families more often then not. It goes with the saying “We hurt the ones we love” ONLY WE DON’T TALK ABOUT IT!
Lets not forget people, we are animals, and as animals we, prey on the weak.

This movie was not about Black or White or whose in control of what. It was a story told by a black woman surrounding different events and circ**stances that she was privileged to hear about. Stories, from different individuals she came in contact with at one point in her life. She is educated and a writer, and was able to collaborate their stories into one amazing book then later into a movie. Be proud of her accomplishments for they’re hers, not yours. Just be happy for her and stop looking for someone to belittle the black race we have the monopoly on that.

If we spent more time being happy for one another instead of looking for ways to demean one another, think of what we could accomplish. If you’re, concern about White people being in control of the media, TV, radio and what have you?

Then change how you think. Start being more supportive towards your black brother and sister next door. Be happy for them when they achieve something, rather it’s a new pair of shoes or a new home. Love on yourselves and the Black community and watch what happens? When, you speak positive and show love you will no longer see negative in any situation. You’ll find yourselves on a higher level and only accept positive stuff to enter your lives. By doing so you would have elevated yourselves, and your races, without the help of outside support or influences. There is no greater love then the love of black people but black people need to love themselves more.

I’ll close by saying this, I could relate to a large part of the movie precious. And, I come form a single-family home, my mother who worked hard to get what she wanted. Unfortunately, her, desires too achieve more and better for self. Placed her children in some unfavorable situations and it would be safe to say with some exceptions I was precious. And as a writer I know there’s a thin line between fiction and non-fiction when writing a story. Most books are based on life events and or surroundings. And as a reader I find that a little truth in the reading makes for a more realistic story.
I have nothing but love for you in Jesus Name.
Smile, and keep smiling, you look good doing it.

For gods sake, how stupid are you people? A lot of these comments simply show the innate idiotic racism of the writer. Even the topic title is a mindless sweeping statement. This story is about THIS girl and is NOT indicative of all black people and no-one with any intelligence would think that.

All the stupid people on here who are putting that opinion down here should really grow up and view the story for what it is….. I guarentee you there are people JUST like that girl in a number of countries and that are a number of different “races” or “colours”!!

People. STOP being so bloody stupid!

I completely disagree with the thesis put foward in this article. “Precious” was not an attempt to cast young African American females in a negative light. To the contrary, the film was an indictment of the form of society which gives rise to these types of social circ**stances. Furthermore, I found your comment about “pity” for holocaust survivors to be quite dispicable so much so that it borders on downright anti-semitism. How dare you denigrate an entire race of people and conflate their very real grievances with a attempt to garner pity. Shame on the author of this article and shame on Black Planet for providing a platform for this type of divisive language. Precious was a film showing America what it didn’t want to see and the reactionary tone of this article reinforces the validity of this notion.

Well in the real world it would be nice if white folks viewed black people as individuals, but it is not the case.
Why does Hollywood continue with these type of movies that degrade black folks. Didn’t Sandra Bullock star in a movie about a black football player?
I have no interest in seeing this movie nor have i seen the “colour purple”, that is just me.
I will stick to my hongkong cinema and french films, I gave up on Hollywood a long time ago (that goes for TV).

Would it change your opinion if she were hispanic or korean. If so than you need to take a good look at yourself.I am an african-american male Iwould not want this to happen to anyone. But if this movie help shed light on a growing problem, then I’m all for it. Lets all get real here, this has been going on for awhile. It’s just nobody wanted to talk about it or at aleast admit it happen in my community be whatever color you are

    I agree with MR_NANASTROKER (losely)

    I seen it twice.
Once to watch it and again to understand the full plot.
To be honest.I can’t stand that movie.
it’s an insult to my Intelligence and my emotions.
    Okay She Overweight,
She illeritae(even thro she’s in school in the begining of the movie),
She has two kids by her father (even thro she’s very aware it was wrong, and could have plotted to kill him) but didn’t just to piss off her mother
( When she was upstairs She smiled at Mary, provoking her).
her first child has down syndrome, and her and her second has HIV.
Plus to add insult to injury Her grandmother is scared of her mother and watch her first child since Mary Jones hates the kid since she’s look like the father.
What’s next she has Diabetes because of her weight,or she has a Advance AIDS, or worse Her daughter has a tumor.
Come on now i can only 1 or 2 tragic points in a movie to affect me.5 is suspect.
10 or more is a insult to my emotions, and they trying too hard to get your attention.like a reality show,or a talk show. and that’s very annoying.

To anyone who defends this movie need to watch and understand the common sense aspect of the movie and ignore your emotions to fully understand the movie.Precious has options and chose to ignore them.

This movie is made for the emotional people to place their votes and for Oscar Support and it worked.Unfortunally.

    Ya’ll need to wake up.

Also there other movies that has the same concepts that Precious has,not all in the same movie.thro but the same concept.

Plus it’s true that incest and rape is common but it’s has been done and more depressing movies like,The Color Purple,Flowers in the Attic,Changling and Recently The Lovely Bones. But that’s just my opinion, and the reason why i thought they are good canadites is because the characters is trapped aginst their will with no help against their attacker and they lost hope which makes it become very depressing in a plot.

But Precious wasn’t trapped didn’t even fought off her father and was walking around in the streets like nothing happend treating it like a dirty little secret.

You can’t feel sorry for that.
    Think about it???

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/KP_2G/ KP_2G

While I applaud Precious for being a fabulously acted and well directed film, I do think that the movie laid it on a bit thick with the dramatics (i.e. the fact that this one kid was abused by mom, raped by dad, bore him two children, was illiterate, and ended up with AIDS). I do think this was an example (although exaggerated) of what some poor youth in America go through. Notice I said “poor youth”. Not Black, not inner city. Because there are mid-western/White communities that have many of these same issues. I think Black people have a tendency to get offended when a movie (tv show, book, etc.) is made about struggles in our communities. We have to look at equality in it’s totality. All things being equal, good or bad. Just like they make movies about White charaters who are abused and poor, they’ll do the same for Blacks. But we must also support the Black films that put Blacks in a positive light. Although some of us may not like the Madea movies or Tyler Perry, he makes films that display us as wealthy, average, good people. And in the end there is often a great message. That is something that I admire about him (while I feel his film making and script writing need work)….

The biggest complaint I have about Precious is that again, we have these light, bright and damn near White “saviors” who are the only examples of stable and positive people in her life or in the movie. Even Sherri Shepard’s role was “ghetto” and rough around the edges. Everybody who loved and cared about Precious was light or White (Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Paula Patton, the teacher, even the Principal had her way of “caring” about the girl b/c she went to her house and gave her the information to get her to a different school). I feel that the author of Precious is a fault for that. That is the way she wrote those characters. I wish at least two of them were dark skinned. I mean, that kinda ruined the whole movie for me. I wanted one dark sista or brotha to come through for her in the end…..

Ok people I hear what people saying ” it happen everyday in the black community and this is a true story” ok but where’s the story about the black women or man that grew in poverty work hard went t to school and made something out of his/herself that also happen everyday. I know I’m one of many people I know that took that route and never get credit for it. Their was NO white savior for me and all people like me, we only had our black families to push us and care for us. The problem is that the media only focuses on stories like precious and blind side but never about people that work hard and made something out of themselves. that’s bcuz white people enjoy stories like precious to show how the WHOLE BLACK COMMUNITY IS LOST WITHOUT THEM THAT WE ARE SO PITIFUL WITHOUT THEM I’m sorry for what happen to this girl as it was a true story but when we are going to shining light on the positive stuff in black community. I agree with you, rome_z255! Always something negative to strike the Black
community down! It’s a shame that noone wants to see the POSITIVE that
happens in our communities. There are very intelligent young people in the
Black communities that ALWAYS go unrecognized… There is no “money” involved! The only kind of news that makes the headlines is ALWAYS negativity from what goes on in our communities. If it is not newsworthy, it
goes unrecognized. We have sooo many children, who go through what Precious
did, and STILL make it! But they go unrecognized! We need to STOP the
negativity in our communities, amongst ourselves as a people, and give
props to those who TRY and STILL MAKE IT! :)

I tried to read the novel, but I couldn’t. The broken English and rampant misspellings, made the book impossible to digest. Besides, I didn’t spend all that time in school, just to read garbage. However, because of all the buzz, I decided to compartmentalize my feelings about the book, and watch the movie, anyway.

“Precious” is well acted and well directed. I am proud of Lee Daniels for becoming the 1st openly Gay, African-American director, to be nominated for an Oscar. So, Kudos to Lee! I hope he wins!

I truly understand why some black people would be repulsed by “Precious”. The movie is a virtual smorgasbord of unflattering stereotypes. Everything that is wrong with society, is boorishly portrayed by the characters in Daniels’ movie. I also noticed that all of the dark skinned characters are monsters, and the light skinned characters are saviors. Hmm….

I don’t have an issue with movies tackling controversial subject matters. My issue is with the fact that Holly-weird only rewards Black stories, if the black characters are dysfunctional, violent, ignorant, poor, lazy, and helpless. Holly-weird has a formula for black films, and the ingredients are anything but savory.

The truth is, Girls like “Precious” exist in all walks of life, but ignorant fools like Barbara Bush, a woman who said Hurricane Katrina was a “good thing”, is convinced that all the black people in the “ghetto” are just like “Precious”. Sadly, based on my experiences, a lot of white people think like Barbara Bush, and we have the media to thank for spreading their abysmal ignorance.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BoweryBetty/ BoweryBetty

Sorry, everyone…I feel a novel coming on. To echo one of the earlier posters, people need to remember that the screenplay for the movie “Precious” was based on an incredible book (Push) by Sapphire. Sapphire actually worked as a teacher in a literacy program in Harlem — mirrored by the character ‘Ms. Rain’ in the film. She encountered MANY young women whose difficult personal struggles (some who were, yes, being violently abused by BOTH parents…and others who bore children as a result of being raped by their fathers) became the inspiration for creating Push. Sapphire wrote Push to honor these students and so many, many other young girls and young women of color who are living with a daily reality of abuse and violence — and whose stories had RARELY BEEN TOLD in books and films. I remember interviews she did back when the novel first came out in the 90s and believe it or not she battled hard AGAINST critics and interviewers (mostly white) who tried their best to say that her characters represented the majority, if not ALL of Black America — Black men, in particular. She held her own with those idiots and stayed true to her vision. She chose to make Precious illiterate, poor, overweight and dark-skinned as a specific statement about the ideals of class and beauty in our dominant society — and how absolutely SHUT-OUT and alienated this girl is.

Something else a lot of folks seem to be missing is the bigger, broader truth I heard Sapphire try her best to emphasize during an interview. “Precious” isn’t meant to be just about an African-American girl living in Harlem. Being illiterate, poor and abused are not exclusive or all-encompassing to the Black experience. When I read the bit about how Lee Daniels commented on the movie being “Our Story” or “About Us”, I can’t help but HOPE he was trying to touch on how Precious’ story reaches beyond race….but something tells me this probably wasn’t the case.

I’ve been working in social services for the past 2 decades and I have seen a lot of things. Some great, wonderful successes, but, unfortunately, a LOT of disturbing realities that echo the content in the book (particularly how many young women have been/are being raped and abused by their fathers or male guardians and become pregnant as a result) — and the film. I have actually seen some workers become so overcome in the moment by what their clients are sharing with them that they have taken a moment and left their cubicle or office area to compose themselves — but they always quickly came back and continued the session in a professional manner. Hell, I even had to take a moment once to take a breath, in private, while working with a troubled, abused 12 year old girl who had 3 children — one by EACH of her mom’s boyfriends — and had contracted herpes somewhere along the way. NONE of us lost our credentials for taking those moments to compose ourselves. Social services/social work is incredibly challenging. It’s true you have to cultivate a STRONG exterior and keen sense of being able to listen, counsel and assess the needs of a client. But if you lose sight of your heart and your humanity, it’s time to find a new job.

It’s true that movies made from books often fail to completely satisfy the fans of the book. I definitely have my issues with the film’s treatment of Sapphire’s story. I could be wrong, but I can’t quite recall there being an incident of Precious stealing a bucket of fried chicken. And the book didn’t end with a weepy social worker and a monologue by the mother. And an extra powerful point of Precious learning self-love from Ms. Rain — portrayed in the book as a DARK-SKINNED and VERY DREADLOCKED sister (as opposed to Paula Patton being cast in the role) — is lost. I hope all of this controversy inspires people to get up and read the book — much like what happened all that time ago when the Color Purple film first came out and people were railing against Alice Walker and Spielberg as hating Black men.

I think that BoweryBetty wrote one of the most well put blog post that I have ever read. So many people commenting here have no idea were the inspiration for this movie came from most don’t even know it was a novel. It was a good movie with great acting by two black actors. It gave a girl who probably would have never gotten a chance to have a lead role or any significant role in a film a chance to shine and get great exposure. It seems to me so many of you that blog on theses BP stories wake up looking for racism in the world, you have grown to relish on it and somewhat enjoy it. I don’t wake up dwelling on the fact that I am black and discriminations that I may face because of it. I dont walk around worrying about what white people or any person for that matter thinks about me. Hell I have read more negative things in my life from people that look like me than any other people in the world. Some of the same people putting their two cents in here run and write hateful comments about these black artist, actors, athletes that they envy. My best friends mother was raped by her father when she was younger and bore three kids from it so the same men who are his brothers in a sense are also his uncle’s. Stories like this are real and it’s good to see them get a chance to be told, understood, and appreciated. Don’t act like it’s never been movies about people being opressed in some way breaking through and shining in the end and if there haven’t been enough for your liking how about you start writing some movie scripts.

ok ima keep it real…i hate this movie and before i saw this article i thought i was the only one angry…this is the most depressing painful god lacking story i’ve ever seen everything bad that could happen to one person happened to precious and i didn’t have to, she was smart enough to steal that chicken she was smart enough to cook she should have left! i could understand this movie better if at the end it told options for youth in this particular situation…besides getting a G.E.D! for me there was no rainbow after the storm just negativity and i know this is based on reality but where is the hope??? dont make a movie with one thousand problems and no solutions cuz thats B.S and i doesn’t help anybody it just shows how hard it is and that there is no rest for the weary! not true in almost every situation god will provide a window for escape and that should have been said. But great acting from monique and mariah precious also did great. mabey they can give her a role as a successful black woman next time… but i doubt that.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ldytrkdrvr/ ldytrkdrvr

I don’t agree with the above article, but I do agree with edit, Mr Carter, BB and somewhat with BBNB. With all of what they said, I left the movie in tears as did others. Peolpe asked if I liked it I say no, and not becuase I think Hollywood pulled a fast one. (those things were going through my mind as I watched it though. There were more white people in that movie than were in The Great Debater’s.) I didn’t like it because of the statement. So many Blacks have made it for themselves, some genrationally never have seen poverty, but we still have things like this still going on. I hate that, the movie was great otherwise, sad as heck, but I get it, the writer wanted us to feel Precious’s pain.
To this ms auafina09 maybe we need to come up with our own answers, maybe we all have to do something, one thing individually before we can do anything collectively Ms Rain changed the game. How many of us are willing to be that deep into someone who is not our family’s problems? I have not read all the comments I admit, but what about the Orderly or the Nurse in the film, remember him. He was the positive Black man role. The other’s were not shown on purpose, they were not the focus of the movie. Right?
So, first thing we can do is stop feeling all victimized and be positived like BoweryBetty and help someone besides ourselves have a better live. Just a suggestion.

Ok, I am a black EDUCATED BLACK female. Several of my girlfriends and I went to see this movie. I really enjoyed it but at the same time felt a little uncomfortable with it because a similar incident happened in one of my friend’s household. I guess I was feeling uncomfortable for her. I felt that each actor/actress did his/her part in this movie and it came across STRONG, like I assume that the they wanted. Black people, lets get passed making everything black and white, just like I always say to my black and/or white friends, we are all God’s children.
My personal opinion, I feel like our community did not like the movie simply because it touched on something that has either happened or is happening in our household. If that is the case, please do like Precious did and go and get help. There is someone who really do care about you. I’m not perfect and not trying to preach, just stating my opinion.

    To Cantrell0621.
I agree completely and would like to add…why does every story have to have a happy ending? This ending is thought provoking. I think alot of people missed the point. Not all of us have a happy ending in life. I too have known people in similar situations and have gone through alot in my own life. Alot of black folks are in denial. We have alot of this going on in our communities. I have seen mothers and grandmothers of molested children turn their heads and pretend like they don’t see what is going on right in front of their faces! That is wrong whether you are black or white! The people that are pissed off about precious are probably some of the same people that are pissed off at Chris Rock for his doc**entary. BECAUSE HE TOLD THE TRUTH!

This is too funny, yo. No wonder people like Daniels make these horror-fests. People will feel sorry for them. There comes a time to expect STRENGTH, not weakness. Triumph, not tragedy.

I still want to understand how this “father” has no mention. Did he actually have a line? Diddy really didn’t in Monster’s Ball.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Miica/ Miica

To say that the film “Precious” is as damaging as “Birth of a Nation”, in my opinion is a stretch. Is this an uncomfortable movie to watch? In my opinion yes and I think that would be the case for anyone regardless of ethnicity. In response to Mrs. Bush saying that there are kids like Precious everywhere, I truly din’t take everywhere as meaning around every corner. However, they do exist. Having worked in education as well as mental health, I have dealt, seen and heard of the lives of children being ruined by having to try and survive day to day while living in such horrible circ**stances(dark secrets). I can recall six cases right off the bat that involved everything that “Precious” went and in one case one young woman committed sucide, because she refused to bare another on of her father’s children. While working, in mental heath, I often read “Problem related to social environment”. So, let’s wake up and not cover our eyes and open our mouths and say enough!! In my opinion, and yes I keep saying my opinion because I’m speaking objectively from my experiences, I think that because most of us (African Americans), have been taught, what goes on in this house stays in this house, feel uncomfortable because these type of subjects or incidents are left in the dark at the expense of an emotionally as well as physically wounded child. Hmmmm would we be having this conversation if “Precious” or in some cases “Preston” were white? Let’s pick and chose our battles carefully.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Dino2000/ Dino2000

I enjoyed watching “Precious”! The film seemed really dark for me at first, but I imagine that was the mood that needed to be presented. The problems presented in the movie are universal issues, after getting over the fact that the characters are black, the movie pulled me into the problems presented within and then I just saw the characters as people. We need to start to talk about the turning point in the movie when Precious had the guts and internal fortitude to confront her mother and begin her process of healing. We need to celebrate the individual more within our community. The journey starts with the individual.

I agree 100%… I was insulted, disgusted, and extremely disappointed. I was very excited to see precious, the cast, the positive reviews and the thought of a black film were enough to make me want to see this movie… however The overuse of stereotypes, and tragic circ**stances were enough to make me say please. Not only was precious overweight and undereducated, she was raped by her father molested by her mother, had two children as a result of the rape, was iliterate, and contracted aids… While all of these are issues in our community, how many people do you meet who suffer from every single horrible thing that can possibly happen???? It was overkill which only continues to feed the white perception of blacks as sloppy, dumb, welfare cases. I hated this movie, would never watch it again and dont believe it deserves a single award. It didnt even end with a positive light, yes precious tested higher than she had previously but it still wasnt even at the level someone her age should have been testing at. She still was a single mother with two children, she was still overweight, waste of two hours of my life.

It is nice to know there are definitely a few people who can read between the line of what the writer was saying. Ignorance is way to bliss for those who refused to think outside the box let alone admitted that there are problems in the black community that never talk about. Someone kindly mention Boyz in the Hood the movie that John Singleton wrote and directed. I can barely watch that film anymore because it is the truth because I know many who are not here no more because of ignorance in our community.

I agree. This film was truely an awesome experience. I too felt pychologically assaulted while watching this film and still to this day have not been able to bring myself to view it for a second time to capture all the things others keep telling me that I missed. This film did something to me spiritually. And I believe that was the point. The elitist black folk with outlets want to have something to say about “anything” black-lead and successful in the white america. We truely need to stop hating on each other successes. This is the very reason why we as a people can’t have nothing or KEEP nothing.

well this is not true..i am white..if you must..caucasion, italian and swedish..whatever the case may be..when everyone stops seeing color and judges people by there character the world will be a better place, i think this article promotes RACISM..and i didn’t like the movie at all…so let’s move forward in a positive manner…so we can live in a better world..I voted for Obama..i love all people who love and treat me with respect…let’s stop the black white thing and start to love one another..

ms_aquafina09, I agree with you. She was smart enough to steal and lie and bold enough to keep an entire classroom in check, but didn’t just walk away from her mother and you wonder why. This mother was all she knew, and loved.

I know a young woman just like this. She isn’t overweight and she never knew her dad, but her mother basically gave her up as a child and showed no love as a teen. She will be absent for months at a time, then shows up to destroy this woman by taking away all her support system. Once she has lost all she has, mom will disappear again. She has done this all her life, BUT SHE STILL HOLDS ONTO THE DREAM THAT ONE DAY, HER MOM WILL LOVE HER. I think ‘Precious’ ended with no hope because it was trying to show HOW Precious’ mother was made. Precious may end up being just like her mother, and the cycle continues. I think that is why there was no hope. Sad!

I didn’t like precious because i thought it was depressing. Unfortunately there are people that can relate to this movie. I prefer movies like the brothers that show successful african americans. I know we african americans have it hard sometimes, but the best revenge is success. Work hard and get that money so you can live in the nice neighborhoods and drive the nice cars. The only word they hate to call us is Neighbor.

And can we stop making everything a white/black issue. Forrest Gump was about incest, that is why his girlfriend Jenny was crazy. She got AIDS too. I didn’t see white people running around with their heads cut off. If the shoe don’t fit, throw it away. But if it does, get your act together and get some help.

Why is everything about racism? Racism definitely still exists and as a black man I contend with it on a regular basis. Racism is not said to your face the way it use to be but you know it is still there. I have an advanced degree but I am still looked at as less due to my color. I was called the “N” word by some trashy folk in my own neighborhood. I still feel uneasy driving through certain cities. So, I know this to be true because this is the way it is. However, I think about the issue before placing it in the “Racism” bucket. I thought that Precious was depressing but there was certainly good acting. I think the award was well deserved. We need to stop putting the “Racism” tag on everything that we don’t like. There are an abundance of movies that depict a variety of ethnic groups. This stuff happens in a variety of environments. I was a foster child and part of the system so I know. I certainly did not have these experiences but they were some that did. A racist movie is when whites use to paint their faces black to depict black people. Now that’s racist! There is already enough racism to go around for everyone instead of slapping every instance with the tag.

I thought Preious was a outstanding film… It’s funny how some of my brothers and sister have reached a point in there lives where the have disconnceted from the community. They have achieved education and status and have removed themselves from the “Hood”. They have forgotten about what goes on there. I too had moved away but was forced to move back due to unforseen circ**stances. I am saddened by what I see in my neighborhood, there are some black people doing well but over all there are many who are not. Recently while riding on a bus I overheard a conversation amoung high school girls one of which had attended a baby shower for her friend who had just given birth to her second child father by her uncle. The next day on a differnt bus a young man congratulated another young man on the birth of his daughter, these guys were both 11th graders. There are households were mommy has four kids by four differnt men and now she has a live in girl friend, or a mother takes her kids with her to confront her girl friend only to find her girl is entertaining another female who along with her three kids has spent the night…Suddenly these women are all in the middle of the street fighting and the kids are standing on the sidewalk watching the whole thing. Now maybe this is not as bad as Precious but I believe the problems are there and we need to take a good long look are ourselves before we look down at Precious!

Let me start off by saying the movie Precious was one of the best acted movies I have seen in a veeery loong time. The story line was very depressing, Monique truly leaves you lost for words. the main charcater which was played by Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe just awsome!! but what a lot of black folks don’t realize is that this issue happens in our community. I am blessed that I have never encountered it but my eyes have truly been opened in regards to it. This blog about the black community not appreciating the movie for the excellence of story telling, reminds me of the movie Color Purple when it was first realesed over some 20 plus years ago,(are you listening Oprah Winfrey? We are waiting for a reunion of the cast members on your show…) where the movie got such a negative response from the black community here in the states. A lot of the issues were about how the Danny Glover character was portrayed. You have to remember at that time there was a lot of Black on Black male crimes happening in our neighborhoods across America, then to show another negative black male image was just too much for a lot of people. so with that being said when the movie came up for Oscar recognition, some black folks where raising the racism issue similar to the Precious movie. so when the Oscar officials got such a negative response from NAACP and other prestiges African American associations they did not know what to do their hands were tied at this point. it was like that saying goes damned if you do & damned if you don’t, so they went with the if you don’t option… and we all know the out come of that Oscar night experience… so people with that being said lets not be apart of history repeating it’s self… look at least it was not a Soul Plane remake.lol

OMG! I had no idea that black people thought this movie was racist! First of all it is based on a book by a black author, and the movie was witten by, directed, produced and starred in by black people. It is a work of fiction and for everyone to be all up in arms about how it portrays the black community negatively is ridiculous. Of course this is not every black person’s situation but I say if it hits home with even 1 child, that is too many. Where we calling Boyz in the Hood, Menace II Society, or Set it Off Racist? They also depicted harsh realities in the black community that are hard to watch again. See our problem is that we are not willing to talk about these issues and try to resolve them. We are our own worst enemies and no one can help us by ourselves. We are not going to be taken seriously by other races if we keep shouting racism all the time. This was a great film and it gave black actors a chance to showcase their talent in a way they would not have had an oppurtunity to do so in mainstream media. Do you think that Monique’s “sassy, black, full figured mother” portrayal in the Parkers was less stereotypical than her gripping performance in Precious? Let’s think before we speak.

Terrible movie…I saw da previews, da director is a GAY black male who thrives off of D R A M A, and belittling black heterosexual people, bcuz he’s not happy in his own skin. I saw da Monique show last week, and a comic was on there, and he made fun of a scene Monique was in, and he was saying she was masturbating, while calling Precious to help her out, everyone in da audience moaned. THIS IS DISGUSTING BEHAVIOR people, and afro-americans should NOT be depicted this way. Other races luv seeing this out race of people. I bet Monique gets best supporting actress…SMDH

As I read this article and many others like it, I began to feel a deep sadness wash over me. It began to dawn on me that my people, the race I love so much and defend to the end, will never be free…we are a race of people that holds each other back…we don’t uplift, we don’t congratulate, we don’t give constructive criticism, we see the negative and we pounce on it…we have a black president, yet we question his position on race, we have oscar nominated talent that look like the majority of our community, yet this movie is hated by so many…no one gave a nod to the director, the author of the book, the hard-working actors and actresses in the film, we just did what we always do…b***h, moan and complain…it’s not this movie that feeds the stereotypical view of white folk…it’s our reaction…SO SAD that as a people we will always be one step behind, because we are so worried about what another race of people thinks of us…maybe it’s time to start wondering what we really think of ourselves…

I haven’t watched the movie, “Precious”. My viewpoint goes back to the black community being snubbed by the Academy for Color Purple, which won only for the music (Quincy Jones).

Now, we’re supposed to be insulted because the movie WAS recognized by the Academy?

Yes, it appears that we get more recognition for movies that depict the dark-side of our race, i.e. “Training Day” (Denzel) and “Monsters Ball” (Halle), but the positive and uplifting movie, “The Blind Side” was also recognized. Every race has a dark side. Look how many movies were made about the mafia badly depicting Italians.

We can’t have it both ways…any well-made movie should be recognized-period.

I too am disturbed by distorted images of Black America and Hollywood’s conscious or unconscious racism and sexism. But it is a complex issue. Precious was a great movie artistically. Some of the best acting, writing, and directing in the world in the entire history of film making was displayed in this single film. (I’ve literally watched millions of films from every country and culture.) When Sapphire wrote her original story she combined true people she had known into one fictional character, but that doesn’t make it less real. It was the way to make a point. Here was a young woman faced by multiple obstacles: racism, sexism, brutality & prejudice against overweight people, poverty, health issues, lack of support to mothers, and rape and incest in the home. The book and the movie deserve awards in a culture that harps on superficiality. But it is nevertheless disturbing that Hollywood does things like award Denzil Washington Best Actor (for a very well played role) as an evil, intimidating cop in Training Day but not as Malcolm X, in the leading role of a life time. It passed over Lynn Whitfield, Angela Basset and others for Best Actress awards, but then awarded one to Halley Berry for playing a somewhat desperate female (who happened to be screwing a white guy) instead of for Dorothy Dandridge or other work; it passed over superb performances by Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg (in the otherwise Spielberg-Disney Land-ish slaughter of the wonderful book The Color Purple); it nominated Terrace Howard for playing a pimp in Hustle and Flow (it *was* perhaps one of his most superb acting jobs though) but it still did follow the trend of awarding black actors for anti-hero roles; it has overlooked incredible roles and actors like Jeffrey Wright who played Muddy Waters, Eamonn Walker who played Howlin Wolf, Mos Def who has played everything from Chuck Berry to a famous black surgeon, and many others; it has continually failed to give Spike Lee and many female directors (like black director of Cadillac Records, Darnell Martin) any commensurate award or mention, and it has never publically apologized for its early history of stereotyping Blacks (and Native Americans, Chinese, women of every color and so on). Even the conservative, corrupted Catholic Church has made some apologies!

I still think that issues like the ones dealt with in Precious should be shown. And I don’t think that every black actor has to portray someone who is nearly perfect. (Or rich, successful, living the American Dream etc.) That would be shallow. But I do think that black actors who portray courageous human beings should be awarded at least as often as those who portray characters who struggle with internal demons. The title: Why White people love Precious and Black people hate it tries to simplify something complicated and multi-layered, but it does make a point; unfortunately at the expense of all the talented black artists who made Precious. Lee Daniels is an amazing director, Sapphire an insightful writer, and Monique and the others all wonderful actresses. When was the last time you saw this many black actresses playing serious roles and actual human beings (instead of cardboard sex pop-ups or complaining make-up queens desperate for men (or for men to change)?

I also think there is an issue of jealousy in the black community as there is everywhere. This is perhaps a left-over from slavery and colonialism in which those in power (mostly white males) pitted blacks (and other groups including women of all colors) against themselves in an attempt to keep power for themselves. This is still happening today. There is also sometimes an issue of bourgeoisie pride. Isn’t it enough that many white films are totally sexist, superficial and into glitz and image? Does every single black film have to be about superficial glitz and image too? Blacks are as diverse as whites, maybe even more so. But life itself is not a black and white matter; each person has tendencies towards being a hero and tendencies towards being a villain, as does every family. A study of human struggles and contradictions is what literature and movies are all about. Still, this should not be exploited by those seeking to project evil on to any group.

That certain scenes in Precious could easily be construed to imply that many Welfare mothers were a bunch of brutal free loaders was one of the things that did bother me about this film. I have witnessed the courage and tenacity of many welfare mothers of all races trying to raise their children in a system that is stacked against them. Contrary to popular belief not all people on Welfare are on it due to choice, laziness or “racial attitudes.” To demonize Welfare mothers or equate black mothers as a whole with the character played by Monique and so on is obviously wrong so I get what the author of the article is getting at. She makes some excellent points. But we can only hope that most people today are aware enough to know that there is a difference between first lady, Michelle Obama, for example, and Precious’s disturbed, mixed up mother. Also, those people who think all black people should look thin on screen are as shallow as the dizziest, stereotypical “white girl.” The whole point of having a heavy black girl as the main protagonist was to expose the multiply, superficial prejudices of America (and the world).
In the end, the title of this article disturbs me as much as many of the issues raised by and in Precious itself. Where are all these black people that hate the film?. As one blogger (toks881) said, “By the looks of the comments, it appears Ms.Gane-McCalla is going to have to figure out what went wrong with her imaginary black poll.”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ArtistaB2003/ ArtistaB2003

The original story was written by a black woman author, and the movie was directed by a black man, I highly doubt that it was a racist movie. Sterotypes do not have to be lies. They are called stereo types becauese there is a certain commonality.
The lead character was so dynamic because she was so very black and very big, the kind of character that many elitist black people want to pretend don’t exist, because they are threatened.
Why does every movie have to have a happy ending-no offense Tyler Perry-?
I think the best movies are those that are visually stunning, and thought provoking.
Rape and incest are very real, molestation by a female is never brought up, but this is real.
This is a dark tale of abuse, ignorance, shame and hope. Be prepared to shed a few tears.

@Glenroy187-You are so right! I bet the same people complaining about the movie watch Real Chance for Love or Ray-J’s show, State Property or some other bulls–t. Precious was trying to better herself, but I guess no one cares about that or how she had other black people were trying to help her as well. If you take anything away from the movie, it should be that we need to help ourselves and encourage others. There are a lot of bad things that happen in this world, but Precious tried to show that it doesn’t always have to be that way. Quit your b–chin!

I can say one thing about this movie. A lot of us our spoiled rotten and don’t even realize it. We blame our mothers for everything wrong in our lives because she was either super controlling, hard to talk to, old-fashioned, self-centered, a religious zealot or kept her foot in your azz, but this movie shows what true child abuse is. This movie should also teach us to not look down on the single, teen-aged mother, an obese women or an illiterate woman. She may just be another Precious.

Why do Whites prefer these types of movies rather than ones with middle- and upper-class Black characters…or……even those with low-income Blacks working to raise themselves up?!

Why was Soul Food canceled?! Frank’s Place?!

Whites are ALWAYS quick to show themselves saving Blacks, but do all they can to cover-up institutional racism, which was NOTICEABLY missing from the movie “Crash.”

Instead, “Crash” presented racism as something we all do to each other….while ignoring the disparities caused by systemic/institutional discrimiantion.
Sould never have won an Oscar.

people that dislike the movie, your entitled to your opinion. however, I noticed that big points are being missed here.

first off, I’ve noticed that anytime black pepople are portrayed negatively on a social level (whether the story is fictional or real), you got all these so call activists and authors and social commentators causing uproar and protest. where are those same people when flavor of love was aired? man I double dare Mr. Armond White to compare the entire BET channel to birth of a nation.

secondly, there are so many ‘precious’ girls out there, but we dont hear much about it because sweeping issues under the rug is a major problem in the black community. so when it comes to light, a lot of people bananas because no one likes to talk about the extreme abuse a lot of kids go through.

it’s 2010. this ‘whole why do black people like this, and white people don’t or it’s based off of white this’ and so on is becoming increasingly annoying.

precious told a story that is so true for many people. life is not always pretty and perfect as it’s portrayed in most hollywood movies.

This article was right on the money. I truly did have a sour taste in my mouth after watching Precious. I knew that the movie was a bit over the top in order to grab the attention of white people. But to have so many black people think that this is representative of our community is said in deed. I grew up in the hood, and I’ll repeat that this movie was over the top. Go visit your local hood one day before you get another plane ticket to Europe.

I agree to an extent. Yes the movie was raw and I did not enjoy it. It could have been a young lady of any culture or race. I work in the social work field and see this from all aspects. What I especially don’t like is that awards for our race seem to only come from negative images on the big screen. Denzel, Hally, Monique . . . they are awesome actors, but does anybody see a trend and what can we do about it?!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CarlDix/ CarlDix

Casey Gane-McCalla, like Ishmael Reed and others who hate on “Precious,” do 2 things—1) They ignore the very real brutality and abuse women of all races and nationalities face in US society. 2) They also ignore the many, many Black people, especially Black women, who lined up outside theaters to see this movie, often more than once.

I co-wrote, with Annie Day, a response to Reed’s longer hit job on “Precious” that appeared in Counter Punch. It was published in Revolution Newspaper and was called: “The Controversy Over Precious,” and it’s available on line at http://www.revcom.us. In a response to Reed’s article in the NY Times, we wrote:

Ishmael Reed takes the fact that Black men have been stereotyped and demonized as a reason not to tell the stories of the brutality faced by Black women. But in fact, anybody interested in exposing and opposing the way Black men or any other oppressed people are treated should be vitally concerned about the liberation of women. They are not at odds, but are in fact part of the same mission. All of humanity should be able to live free from abuse.

In that light, Precious should be celebrated. This film takes people who are usually only depicted as stereotypes, hated and looked down at, if looked at at all—overweight, dark-skinned Black girls and women on welfare—and shows them as they are, full humans with complexity, humanity and far too often squandered potential.. In this way it contributes to understanding more deeply the depths of the oppression people like them face and the impacts of those stereotypes.

Precious was not a movie to love the awards are not worthy.Monique should not receive a reward for portraying such an ugly person. The movie fell flat in my opinion, because it did not show what happens to Precious after she walked out the welfare office with children in tow. Mariah Carey, although a debuting actress; was also a very light light social worker, and the part about mom fooling DCF worker was a wake up call. they will believe all parents stage themselves.WHAT A TERRIBLE WAY FOR THE MAN TO START EYEBALLING US… 1974 CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION TREATMENT ACT. Nowhere in the movie did I see the words “based on a true story.” I often wonder why African-Americans are so easily offended by the most simple s***. • http://www.blackplanet.com/Egyptiaan7/ Egyptiaan7

I actually saw the movie twice. I think black people have a way of avoiding the ugly truth. Of course we don’t want to air our dirty laundry. There are too many families where there have been victims of rape, abuse and incest but the victims are too ashamed to ever talk about it. As black people we cannot talk openly and candidly about these subjects. So we would rather get angry and still point the finger at whites for own problems. Racism is a fact of life and I don’t think it will ever completely go away. But we have to take responsibility for our actions. It is nobody’s fault but our own when we abuse and molest our own children and as a community we stand by and do nothing. No, Precious does not represent all black girls but open your eyes to see that there are many girls named “Precious” that walk past you daily. And some of them do look like Precious and some of them even look like Paula Patton, but nevertheless they are Precious too.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/unknown108/ unknown108

Listen I have not seen Precious so have no right to jugde one way or another, but I will say this, either way one way or another it’s just a movie. How long has such a thing like movies existed versue how long we have survived. Like I say I havn’t seen it so I can’t judge be I do know we know that no movie, no T.V show, no Book could ever tell the individual black story whether you come from rich or poor, burbs or projects it’s a sea of lives with so many different memories and events that no one person could ever hold it all so how could we all be the same? We don’t need to be offended, we all know the truth our people have survived by our people. I mean my Mom and Dad worked I didn’t need a white person to save me. With that being said if it is true and it is the second movie to be released involving a white hero saving a black younth( Sandra Bullock?) then it does raise an interesting question without stirring up some s**t. Is there a such thing as the Black victim, White hero sterotype movie? I saw dangerous minds, bumped the Coolio track, but I never thought why did she have to come well dressed then humiliated only to return differently dressed and somehow on ther level only then still to so called bring them up to hers. I’m just saying is there a white hero movie sterotype?

I agree with Egyptian7. I saw the movie and I believe it shed light a shameful secret in not just the African American community but the American community. I am a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and in my career I have worked with so many children and women who were abused sexually, physically and emotionally. At first I was surprised at the percentage of Blacks suffering from abuse. Growing up I always thought that was something that sick White and Hispanic families did. I didn’t realize how it affected our community. So, although I was deeply saddened at the life that the abuse this child was subjected to, I was not at all in denial. It irritates me when someone says they couldn’t go see the movie because its too depressing. That’s just an excuse to remain ignorant. Our community has to open its eyes and stop trying to act as if our problems don’t exist , whether that problem is abuse, racism, poverty, drugs, or what have you. It is time that we actually DO something versus continue to talk and point the finger. Of course White America does highlight the negative in our community but we don’t have to live up to the stereotypes that have been set.

I just wanted to add that everyone keeps talking about a white person saving the character, Precious in this movie. Did people really see the movie? What white person saved her? The character that showed interest in her and took her in was played by the actress Paula Patton (pictured above) whom I believe is an African-American actress who may be of mixed racial heritage. In addition, Mariah Carey, a counselor to the character in the movie is also of African-American/Caucasian heritage. I don’t know maybe this is an issue for some…..the dark-skinned vs. light-skinned thing. But no matter what, the issue is what it is.

I don’t know where Casey lives, but I have lived all over this country and there are “Precious’s” everywhere. No they might not encompass everything about her, but all of us know someone who is overwieght, or was molested, or who’s parents abused them. The Black audience loved this movie, the critics don’t speak for us. I am glad this movie has been nominated for six oscars, they deserve it. There was great acting, a great storyline, and overall it made you think. Everyone talked about this movie for months! Thats what a good movie is supposed to do!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jai_stormy/ jai_stormy

I am not crazy about the film. To be honest, it’s not the film itself but all the honor and recognition it’s been given. I just hate when movies that depict African Americans in a negative light gets these honors. I don’t care how real you might think it is. Not every African American can actually relate, so why are these type of movies always being made? Why didn’t the whole cast of “The Great Debaters” get nominated? Why wasn’t this movie a big deal? People think hollywood has completely changed. They want to see us playing dumb and ignorant. In exchange, dangle a shiny trophy as a reward. Days of slave master rewarding the “good” slave hasn’t changed.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TracyMac621/ TracyMac621

It is very interesting that people are critical of the movie, but not the book. I have not seen the movie yet, but I read the book, and was troubled by the tale, not because I think it is representative of us as a people, but because it was a story of someone. Maybe rather that being upset about this story, we should hold Hollywood more accountable for telling more of “all” of our stories. People dog out Tyler Perry, but he is telling “our” story, Sandra Bullock is receiving acclaim for The Blind Side, but that is “our” story. It is unfortunate that the show business world tends to hold on to the negative in all aspects- movies, music, tv; but we need to continue to push for a more balanced approach, and criticizing a movie that is one aspect of the African American tapestry is what prevents us from moving forward.

People in general like stories that they can identify with. For the ones that have had a similar experience it could help them knowing they’re not alone.
Ms Nelson says “I don’t eat at the table of self-hatred, inferiority or victimization. I haven’t bought into notions of rampant black pathology or embraced the overwrought, dishonest and black-people-hating pseudo-analysis too often passing as post-racial cold hard truths.”
Good for you. It sounds like you have ovecome every bad situation that you’ve had to face in life, not everyone is as strong as you are.

No culture likes their dirty secrets aired…but guess what…little girls in our culture live with this and worse every single day and grown women hide this history behind executive jobs and glassy eyes, drugs, poverty, self hatred. They are damaged, alone, ashamed and IT IS TIME TO TELL! Yes it is vulgar, it is an assault to our senses, it is a horrific thing to be faced with, it is hard to watch and for some hard to even imagine is true. As vulgar as this is to you…imagine this being your life…all you know of life. Until we stop turning our eyes from what is a vulgar assault and facing the facts that this is how too many of our children are living we are cowards.

Cant we make a movie with the intent of being artistic without it being representative of everyone? I mean lets face it, if every movie was about all black people, we’d have gotten boring by the 80′s.

Think about The Bluest Eye. Pecola was in no way representative of all black people, but it was still a great book for every1, not just us.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pureonyxx/ pureonyxx

Why do black people hate “Precious”? Black people have always been more concerned about the “image” of black people in the eyes of white people than the reality of black life. Doesn’t matter that we’re killing each other right and left. Doesn’t matter that many of our children are growing up in the some of the most dysfunctional homes in the country. Doesn’t matter that gym shoes, “hair” and clothes supersede the importance of education. None of that matters… unless it turns up in a movie.

It is good that this has forced out to talk about the realities some among us experience. This is not to compare it to what other non-blacks have to endure. The misogyny is known and it is not the preserve of Blacks. It is therefore healthy to bring this to the light and if it results in change within our community then we will be the better for that. We do not run away from our issues by always asking what others will think of us. We do not seek validation from whites or others, but validate ourselves by being prepared to fight for all and especially the least among us. We are secure in ourselves to say we have a lot of strengths to celebrate but we also have things to fix and we will talk about these too.

Advocacy speaks to issues, not only that affect the majority, but also those that affect that minority whose voice is not heard. While this narrative is not representative of the Black community, the reality is there are some who are forced to live with these indignities. Every story must be heard; not just the good ones.

I also don’t know why is garnered so many nominations, the only person worthy of an Oscar nod is Mon’nque or whatever her name is, the girl who had the lead did absolute nothing for me and I am in Theater. Blacks stop being so Goddamn sensitive to movies, its a movie that is all,Jesus Christ.

This is all very interesting to review. The movie precious was very diffacult for me to look at because of some of the aggresive seens and thought monique really played the part. Concerning the prejudice or the reality of being judged theres no way to get away from someone being judged by everything including rather or not there black. I think it is a terrible protrayal of a black home and it’s not typical situation but found it does happen alot in other cultures. In the case of it being a black thing we need to help our image improve by putting forth better movies of blacks like what eddie murphy was doin ie: coming to america and tyler perry in a blac culture so that those of us who r black r not ashamed and want to impower each other culture is important and how it is betrayed falls on us all, our mother, father, sister, brothas. It leaves a mark We need to give honor to art work we got enough of the neggative we need more positive. Power to the people. just a little note I live in seattle on mlk all the businesses that were black r now asian owened and ran black people we need to do better!!! including what situations we let out of the bag!!!

Does anyone remember the little fact of this film being based on a novel?? The book Push was written by Sapphire, a black woman. The director of the film was a black man. The screenwriter was a black man. This novel was written to be entertainment, a very harshly read form of entertainment. Crimes of the nature found in the novel and subtly revealed in the film happen in numerous households across the country, black, white, yellow, green or purple. There are many underlying issues that from the foundation for the trap that “Precious” the character found herself in, from her own and her mother’s lack of education (at least Precious was trying to rectify this on her own), her mother’s dependence on the welfare system, and her mother’s lack of self-esteem and dependence on a man who wasn’t her own. These are the issues which we need to address in our communities. We need to hold ourselves accountable and responsible for insuring that our children have all the tools they need to overcome and not be trapped. We need to teach our children to finish school with degreeS, a h.s. diploma isn’t worth much anymore. We want our children to dream of being ball-players and rappers, what happened to doctors, lawyers, the president??? We need to teach our sons to be men and our daughters that not every boy who looks their way is worthy of the treasure that they possess. Why are these not issues that we are working for???

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/bdbest/ bdbest

I have reviewed all that was said about this movie and also spoke to African American women & men about it. No one is really happy about this depiction of a Black dysfunctional family with incest & violence issues. These things are real issues regardless of race. My personal take, I don’t need to see this stuff. It’s negative. We need to focus on a more positive image of ourselves and our life stories. No one person or culture is perfect and I know that regardless… we do bad things sometimes. Study the history of civilization. Man & woman have not been that civilized! I’m tired of these types of stories being capitalized on. Sure it’s a problem to be addressed and is being address therapeutically. Theres are family issues as well as an Mental Illness issues. How many times do we have to look at it or make money showing the worst of all possible situations? We need to know and use the past for knowledge and experience and leverage the future for opportunity and encouragement.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/crammasters/ crammasters

Why do I think “Precious” is as bad as “Birth of a Nation?”

For the same reason I had a problem with Halle Berry winning an Oscar for playing a WM’s w***e (“please, please, mister white man, please have sex with me!) instead winning for “Dorothy Dandridge” (a much better role).

and it’s the same reason I had a problem with Denzel winning for playing a lowdown criminal cop instead of the much better performances in Malcolm X (a strong, MORAL, BM role model) or in “Hurricane” (one of his all-time best roles).

The problem isn’t about showing our “dirty laundry,” it’s the lack of balance, the lack of positive black images, AND it’s the lack of CONTROL blacks have over our OWN images. White folk control ALL OUR IMAGES — and it doesn’t matter how rich or famous a showcase black entertainer/producer/director/talk show host is — they are still working for the WHITES who control the game — and that includes Tyler Perry and Oprah…

Don’t be fooled by the Tyler/Oprah or any famous black folk put out front to “promote” the white media’s agenda. Showcase black folks like Tyler and Oprah still play by the rules laid down by white folks OR they don’t get TV shows, movie deals, or big paychecks…These showcase blacks must SUBMIT to the rules of this game if they want their TV shows, rap videos, clothing lines, endorsements, record deals, movie deals, movies in theaters, TV syndication, sponsors to keep filling their pockets with moolah.

Most black images — with the exception of independent black films made BY black folks and a handful of black specks in the white buttermilk TV dramas and movies — show black folks and black life as ABNORMAL and BM and BW as unloving toward each other. For every ABNORMAL white character in a movie or TV, there are dozens of normal white folks to overpower that image, or some moral, wonderful white folk who come to the rescue.

check out the color scheme of the “black” movies promoted by white Hollywood/media. The most ignorant, criminally inclined, uneducated, and dysfunctional black folks — especially if they are female — are usually DARK-SKINNED.

To be dark and female is to automatically be obese/manless/desperate/illterate/dysfunctional. Try to remember the last time YOU saw a dark-skinned black female in a movie or TV show as the love interest of a BM, or as an object of desire by ANYONE..

My last point is this: the white media doesn’t spend billions of dollars to give you cheap or free entertainment.

There is ALWAYS an agenda and that’s “white supremacy/black inferiority” and they will spend billions to PROGRAM YOUR MIND and make you think it’s NORMAL to be ABNORMAL.

When they show positive black images, it is always a black folk who is helping white folk achieve an agenda, or rescuing white folk (like most Morgan Freeman movies), and they are usually black folk who have NO connection to other black folks, the MESSAGE being that a “good black” is MORE loyal to the white agenda and white folk than to any black agenda

Once you see the game, you will always peep game.

Wasn’t it a black lesbian who helped her. I saw it as a self esteem, self confidence issue more than racial. There a many many victims of child abuse and incest who had their sense of self snatched from them. And no you don’t have to be Euro acculturated to succeed, but you better know who you are, be self-confident and proud of it.

This movie presents issues that some may want to stay in the closet, or sweep under the rug. the truth is no matter what race it is this can and is happenning even as this discussion is going on, some will say, this is an awakening, not some race issues, it does not matter who or what skin color was in the leading role of the movie, this is a real life issue that truly needs to be addressed,it also lets one know that just when they thought that they were having a bad time with their life, someone else’s life is worse. It is have time people wake up and quit trying to seperate the apple from the crust,”IT’S A PIE!” It’s time to learn something from so thing instead of trying to destroy something that might have so good in it. Like I said, and I’ll say it again: from somethings.: “LEARN SOMETHING!”

This jus brings up in my mind what i’ve always been saying about alot of black movies. “Every black movie isn’t always a GOOD black movie.” For the most part, I’m tired of seeing all of the ghetto, dope dealing, “New Jack City type of movies for blacks. You can go down the list, 1. New Jack City 2. Blue Hill 3. Boys n the hood, etc. I am sooooooooooooo tired of those kind of “black movies.” I do like the ones that cast the same group of characters such as Vivica Fox, Gabrielle Union, Morris Chestnut, etc. (Two Can Play That Game, Boomarang, etc.) Even though they still show “black issues” (womanizing, etc.)at least they show those blacks as lawyers, doctors, fortune 500 execs, etc. We need more of that. I have no problem with “Precious.” Although I agree this is happening in every community-white, black, hispanic, whatever-wherever!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent Observations – I have been thinking about the psychological side of that movie but we must remember that Precious has to make a living too. However, I do not participate in events or acts that make me or other blacks look like or portray us as idiots unless they are and intentionally act that way to harm me via criminal acts, for self gain, and they don’t care about harming other for that gain. I.E black judges obstructing justice vs. blacks for personal gain (see USDC SDM cases 303cv12006 and 307CV0074, and USDC EDL Case 208CV04583) where the courts and JSUMS administrators kept black PhD students from graduating at Jackson State University for 16 years and counting. None graduated in clinical psychology until I filed suit in 2003 – not one for 10 years and none have been readmitted that were illegally dismissed since 1994. Likewise, we must remember the GOALS OF AMERICAN SLAVERY as defined by other vs. African Americans in particular. There are numerous other cases of black on black and of course white, red, yellows, browns, and others vs. blacks racism and discrimination that is harming all of us and our children. There is Hispanic vs. Black racism – and we fail to realize that we are all fighting for the same piece of pie. Let us hope precious with reach out with her wealth and move to other positive roles. However, the appetite for those who want to denigrate us can never be satisfied with such degrading views and mockery but still we rise and survive as they wallow in mental sickness – anyone who thinks blacks and other are inferior to the self.
Frederick Douglas warned us of this and affirmed that the Goals of the American Slavery Systems were to leave the African American Slaves (expanded for the 21st century):
    1. WITHOUT FATHERS OR FATHER FIGURES INCLUDING GRANDFATHERS
    2. WITHOUT MOTHER OR MOTHERS FIGURESINCLUDING GRANDMOTHERS
    3. WITHOUT FAMILY AND EXTENDED FAMILY
    4. WITHOUT COMMUNITY – OR INDEPENDENT COMMUNITIES THAT ARE SELF SUFFICIENT
    5. WITHOUT A CHURCH WITH TRUE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AND SPIRITUALITY / RELIGION
    6. WITHOUT GOD – OR KNOWLEDGE OF WHO AND WHAT GOD IS – GOD IS NOT A WHITE, RED, YELLOW, BROWN, OR BLACK RACIST GOD!! THAT IS A SUPREMACY LIE.
    7. WITHOUT INDEPENDENCE AND SELF AUTONOMY BUT DEPENDENT
    8. WITHOUT WEALTH / MONEY / FINANCES BUT DEPENDENT
    9. WITHOUT PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OR PERSONAL CHARACTER, INTEGRITY, HONESTY, PERSERVERANCE, JUSTICE, ETC.
    10. WITHOUT EDUCATION OF ANY KIND
    11. WITHOUT SELF GOVERNANCE

IN SHORT – THE AFRICAN AMERICAN SLAVE AND HIS DESCENDANTS WERE TO BE BLACK, UNCOOTH, UNEDUCATED, UNRELIGIOUS, UNCONNECTED, DEPENDENT, SELF DEFEATING, INTRA RACIAL HATING (BLACK ON BLACK) WALKING IDIOTS

WE MUST DO EVERYTHING IN OUR POWERS TO ADDRESS ALL OF THESE AREAS AND BECOME THE EXACT OPPOSITE!!!

To the movie haters film yo movie an lets see what you bring, or better if you can bring anything at all. Whites care about blacks? That seems to be all they say NOW, but it is very funny how they did not understand a single word of passion, care, love, when they were hanging our people from trees. Were was the love, an care then? The words in the bible have not changed, so again I ask why did they not understand the same words then?Care NOt, just lie, an act like we care same ol, same ol.

What should have been expounded upon is the out-of-control HIV stats in our black communities, teen-age girls (under 18 years) engaging in sexcapades and also with ADULT males, that rape on the whole is most “never reported.” Now incest occurs as well, but I think that other cultures and ethnicities “corner the market” on this one. I also have concerns about the percentage of our black people that won’t pick up a book or take a walk, but will end up eating themselves to death. Take a look around…the diets that many of us have, by history IS unhealthy. For example, “chitlins” also know as hog guts? This food is the chit that former slave-owners would throw away or give to the slaves? “Everything that is good may not be good for US.” We KNOW that as black people that we have a pre-disposition to high blood pressure, heart-disease AND diabetes? So why would this film script portray an obese, black girl infected with HIV, her psycho-social problems compounded by an out of touch, abusive mother and black male that infects her with HIV? This is a “negative” all the way around. An irresponsible black male that lacks responsibility and compassion and a mother that has an “all about ME” mentality. This is why scores of our black children are in the dismal states that they have to live.

My position is that it is bad enough that our children are brain-washed and directly influenced by the images being put out there, but now once again the “Great White Hope” looms on the horizon. HELL to the no!

An updated, “youthful” Aunt Jemina no less. However, the message did get out that there is a war on our children and that many are in crisis.

I am so sick of us as black people complaining about how “society” potrays us. Do something about it!! If you don’t agree with the negative sterotypes then stop going and supporting those types of movies. I believe Precious was an insightful movie for many, that doesn’t understand how things maybe in some or many homes of proverty stricken families(don’t get it twisted, this abuse doesn’t just happen in the “ghetto”). I believe Precious is bigger than black or white. This type of ignorance and abuse is an illness, which needs to addressed and this doesn’t just pertain to African Americans. Instead of walking away from the movie with disgust for what sterotype you may feel is being betrayed. Look at the bigger picture…walk away with disgust for this is a crime that many of us(people in general) turn an blind eye too. Society will not change its mind of us “blacks” until we change or minds about ourselves. Yes “society” may think that it takes a white person to save us, but it’s time for us to start saving ourselves, and stop putting each other down. Go and help a single mother from the ghetto, show her she can make it inspite of her current circ**stance…ect ect.

People really need to stop associating a story that could be about any family, race, or culture and making it out to be a “racist” or stereotypical situation. Some have missed the beauty of the story in itself too busy being close-minded. Truth be told..the moral of the story is that regardless if it was an all African-American cast this could be anyone suffering the emotional, physical, and mentally devastating experience Precious endured. Stop making everything about “white” or “black” all the time. If we continue to allow ourselves to be put into a “box” racism will always be a thorn in our side. Take notice with the ending of the movie…Precious wanted to prosper despite the odds against her…she didn’t give up! All in all, you didn’t get that job or house, further your education, or having prosperity you are seeking because of you…not because somebody was holding you back. We all have the opportunity to rise above it…the only thing is stopping you is you!

And when the last time you seen a movie up for an academy award where in the cases of precious or the blind side where it a white mother that was a welfare queen with an obese aids having illeriate daugther. Or a rich black family taking in a poor homeless white kid.

    Regarding dancetodeath’s comment

“”The guilt of having raped black women during the days of slavery as well as destroyed families, extorted free labor, beaten people like animals etc. is still very much in the back of every white man’s mind whether he admits it or not.”"

I am a white guy – I’ve never raped a woman – white or black and therefore have no guilt about the past. As a white male I admire people for who they are not based on a color but their actions and character. I can honestly say your thinking is more outdated and stereotyping than anyone I know. I can’t say I ever thought of beating any human like an animal. So every white man is not like you exclaim. You have some serious issues.

Be sure you see the March 15th Blackplanet news addition on the subject about the video director for the Fugees Video. Check out what he did and check my comment out there. You people need to quit for real! After you read what this man did, you owe Monique and Gabourey an apology for the things you all have siad about this movie. And if you miss my comment in the comment section on the 15th here it is:

And everybody had what to say about the movie “Precious”? I’m sorry I can’t hear you? What was that? Oh I thought so….because now “Precious” to the fifth power is in your face with this situation. To every last one of yall that had all that crapt to say a few weeks ago when that movie was an issue…..guess what? Shhhhhhhh, that’s the sound of nobody caring what you think!!!! BOOM!
And if you have never been in such a situation to all of you talking about the mother, you need to hush. Period. Cause you don’t know what you would have done after he got finished wearing yo behind out with a board or boot. Fear is a mutha! Stop a casting judgement when you are not wearing the shoes.
Tell all that flack you had to say about “Precious” to the children that suffered in this situation, and seek ye first the kingdom of God before you pass judgement.
Monique and Gabourey…..the Oscar goes to you for having the courage to touch on a dark subject.

Sorry, I think I lost what I wrote. But I just bases of what I said. Even though I wrote here’s the bottom line. Black people are afended to this movie “some” because as far as the Black women we have been dealing with this for a long time. We always had to and still have to deal with raising our babies ourselves. Now I’m not talking down on the Black man and I’m not makeing up excuses but the Black man has alway been taking from the black woman stiming from slavery. The Black man had Black women and Black babies and then the white man “Master” took them and sold them so the Black woman had to raise the babies themselves. And then the white man a the pick of the litter and anytime took the black woman a raped her when he got ready. There was never our Black man there to protect us. So that goes to say. And now when the black man make it and start making money they forget about the black woman and go get a white woman “which is their choice” but if they wern’t sucessful the white woman wouldn’t even look their way. So now the black man is saying that the white woman is more than a black woman. So as far as the movie, the white people like it more because the’re not looking at the big picture, ther’re thinking this is the way black people are they are abusive and they beat their children and the are mean people and tha’s not the case. Alot of white people don’t even know their history and how they were living in the gutter and how Black people had houses, land, and sucessful businesses great inventors. But the white man came to this town one day and start killing the children and all and cutting of the children’s feet to get their shoes. And stole their inventions. And tha’t why to this day they try to keep us devided as Black people. I guess the movie hit home and we know that the white people wouldn’t understand it. But pass judgement on the black people and women.

This is stupid because u have so many white movies/books like precious, bastard out of Carolina, which is based in truth, hound dog and even secret life of bee’s which the white girls “savior” were black women. I hate that we as a people are always looking to be the victim, s**t like precious happens, I know first hand that it does. I went to school with white twins whose daddy had them doing 3somes with him and his friends when they were in 5th grade.

Get over it people. Precious is a sad work of fiction about terrible acts that happen in real life to not just women of color but all women.

how about that one movie that came out around 1995 that featured an albino white dude gettin abused in life. i forgot the name of the film but there have been films like that in which down and out or disadvantaged whites have gotten similar intervention as precious did.

The writer of this article is illiterate and possibly lives in a dark cave. Barbara is absolutely correct. There are kids like Precious of different races & culture, everywhere. I grew up between the islands and NY, attended school in Baltimore and Florida and have traveled from Virginia to Utah in my 33 years. I’ve seen it all. As real as it is to me, it is still shocking to know that we have kids like that sometimes living right next door to us. Literally, I had a 14 years old girl that had to play mother to her younger siblings and wife to her father as her mother went out and enjoyed herself. If that girl did not play those roles her mother would beat her with everything from the pot spoon to bathroom sink(well if she could have.) When people came to our house, they never knew what was brewing next door. The neighborhood was that of prestige, but sometimes…the grass isnt always greener on the otherside. I see Precious as a wake up call to all people. Its not about insulting blacks or making whites feel inferior to us. You can only be offended if you allow something or someone to offend you. Instead of sitting on your butt and knocking down the film how about just say you didnt like it and move on. It was a film. I’m sure you dig films that promote violence and drugs and telling our young kids its ok to get into the wrong things in life, but here is a film based on reality and you have to say its an insult to blacks and their lives? Really? To the writer, director, actors, actresses and all involved in this movie…Congratulations and Job Well Done. It’s time for a wake up call and to the real issues in the world. Precious is just the beginning and hopefully not the end.

And Newsone about why white people hated movies like “The Burning Bed” about a white woman abused by her psycho white husband and burned him alive in bed. Why do they hated movies that show white men who are controlled by their white wives? Why do they hated that movie “Enough” with Jennifer Lopez a latina who beat the sh*t out of her white psycho husband killing him in the process?

An interesting perpective…I havent seen the movie but from the promos I made my own opinion..I didnt look at the movie as a PSA. I looked at it as something with a predom cast to see OTHER than something like…Just Wright or *Icant even think of another movie with a predom cast* But I suppose everyone is going to take what they want from the movie…

I heard that Precious was a great movie. It sucks. Once I saw and heard the praise from people ignorant of our past. Fat, black and ignorant is the stereotype from slavery years. Jamestown, Virginia had both black and white slaves. As the number of blacks increased, Afro-blacks, black Indians and the original black jews from Kush, Ethophia, Africa, non-blacks wrote into the system that blacks were less than human. Precious is a kick in the face of black people everywhere. So is Tyler Perry’s ‘The house of pain’ and ‘Meet the Browns. The men act and dress like ‘JJ’ Kid Dynamite from ? Good Times? Obviously there’s good money to be made showing black men and women as idiots. Then came the ‘Exploitive movies. SuperFly, etc. Spike Lee and Denzel Washington own their own industries. Help us, please—Lee and Denzel. The N-word was once in the dictionary. It stated blacks were thiefs, liars, etc. Having been a cop, I know blacks never will be able to live up to the sterotypes created by non-blacks. Sitcoms based on humor makes sense untl unnecessary movies relate ignorance to blacksonly,
