Top 5 Sci-Fi Movies That Are Really About Racism
Many people are raving over the new South African Sci-Fi thriller, District 9. The movie is based on apartheid and xenophobia in South Africa. Still, District 9 is not the first science fiction movie based on real life racism and discrimination.
1. X Men (The Civil Rights Movement)
Stan Lee has admitted that the world of the X-Men was partially based on the Civil Rights movement. The X-Men and other mutants are meant to represent Black people, as they are discriminated against, persecuted by the government and attacked by violent mobs. The X Men set out to achieve their leader, Professor Xavier’s, dream of mutants living in harmony with humans, making him the Martin Luther King figure of the movie. His nemesis, Magneto, wants to fight against humans and takes a more militant stance against human oppression of mutants. In the movie he quotes Malcolm X, saying he will fight for mutant rights, “By Any Means Necessary.”

2. Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (Slavery)
In this prequel to Planet Of The Apes, primates are used as servants and slaves for human beings. Eventually, Caesar, the chimpanzee protagonist of the movie leads a primate revolution against human beings. Caesar tells a black assistant to the oppressive governor “You, of all people should understand that to be free, we need power,” making the slavery allegory all the more clear.

3. District 9 (Apartheid)
The director of District 9, Neil Bloomkamp said his experience growing up in apartheid era South Africa inspired the film. In the movie, aliens are relocated to District 9, an alien Soweto where the “prawns” are forced to live in shanty towns and experience prejudice from human beings and oppression from South Africa’s government.

4. Alien Nation (Immigration, Integration)
In Alien Nation, a flying saucer full of aliens, who look exactly like humans, but with weirder heads, lands in Los Angeles. The aliens served as the discriminated minority in the movie and were given the derogatory name “slags.” A TV show followed later, and the aliens were used to give social commentary for issues relating to African Americans and Mexicans.

5. Brother From Another Planet (Slavery)
In this movie, a mute black alien with three toes and telekinetic powers crashes into the New York harbor. He is chased by alien slave masters, who are trying to capture him and bring him back to their own planet.

Damn, Paul Mooney said it best, “Everybody wants to be black, but NOBODY wants to be a black”. This is why we need to support each other and stop fighting each other. When will we see.
Ok, we know this all of this already! Tell me something I don’t know. Seems like much ado about nothing.
I’d add Star Trek to the list of movies. Not that mess that came out recently with Chris Pine. But the original movies and shows.
The most notably is Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country where the Klingons want peace because their moon Praxis blew up leading to them being extinct due to fuel shortages in 50 years.
Kirk doesn’t trust them, but Spock arranges for the Enterprise to be in the thick of it. The Klingon Chancellor is killed and Kirk is framed by a conspiracy between Klingons and Starfleet Officers with the help of Romulan influence.
Only then does Kirk realize that people can be afraid of change. Kind of something that we’re all dealing with now since the election of President Obama.
The X-men and Planet of the Apes reference was a good point out. because Stan Lee made that reference with his band of mutants in comic book form decades before it hit the movie screen at a time when things along the lines of civil rights were at its peak. And who can forget Charlston Heston’s “get your stinking paws of my you dyam dirty apes!” line? lol
On a planet where humans are savage beast this white man had the audacity to cuss out a mob of apes, but he was not lynched, no, he went to court, faced a trial and even got away when some chimps went uncle Tom to help him out!
The newest addition D-9 is more like a refresher and reminder class on “what was” in South Africa before Nelson Mandela was released from prison and later President. There were some young people (of all races I might add) watching the film when I saw it did not even have a clue that blacks in south Africa were living just like the aliens 28 years ago as the movie references to the arrival of the “prawns”.
Little did they know it was a rare occasion that you say news footage when a black South African was in a position of “enforcement” as the many of them living in the very real District 6 did.
As the line from POA movie suggests:
“You, of all people should understand that to be free, we need power.”

@solsa you really have to break down those extra movies to me what does Blackhawk down have to do with racism? It was a real event. Troops were sent in because the warlords kept stealing food from the people.

yo im in awe about some of the comments like how people are so obviously nieve to Television and Media. Everything has an underline meaning, and this post brings it to the forefront. Not only that, I’ve had discussions in plenty of classrooms regarding media ethics and race. Its VERY REAL and people like extravengent_swag need to look past the hiphop, iphones, and see the real subliminal messages being put out there.

Honestly, some people on here made some dumb comments….when they talk about the message in these movies, not only referring to african american that having racial issues…its just display what other races go through too….far as Hispanic, Asians, and other ethinics groups because we are not the only race that experience racism….And I saw District 9 and it was a very good movie and it really shows how racism is still alive here today. Some people just need to open they eyes to the world around them….and when your mind is open to the world then you will see everything different…..
Okay…for anyone who doesnt realize that these movies are just trying to do what Tupac did in his music, the news did the Vietnam war[bring these issues to the for front so hopefully we can bring about change] has got to be blind. I mean to see all the racist remarks and issues happening before President Obama (racially motivated police attacks, Gena 6) and what seems double time since our President has been in office(Mayors sending him pictures of watermelons, racist comics),and think people are “spending there time” looking for racial issues are the real ones who need to “WAKE UP TO LIFE”!
