I havent seen District 9 yet, but I definately plan on doing so (nope, the hype had nothing to do with my decision). If you want to see parallels between racism and science fiction, I suggest the X-Men graphic novel, “God Loves, Man Kills” (the basis for “X-2″).

I was going to leave this alone…BUT, Cocoflamingo, the creators of District 9, X men and Planet of the Apes films all state that the very reason they made these films were due to the struggle of oppressed Black people. So, we don’t have to read into them, the creators stated they aren’t just movies…theBTy are social commentaries. BTW, I saw District 9 yesterday, I wasn’t impressed but my homegirl liked it.

One of the reasons why I’ve always loved the X-men…and much of the reason why they are the most successful and popular comic series in history. I think Stan Lee is the man. I was only saddened that the message behind the movies was at times lost behind The Fox movie machine. There are some amazing X-men graphic novels out there…I’ve often seen parallels growing up a fan between reality and the comics book. For instance the morlock saga. which was basically mutant on mutant violence. and The Days of the future past saga. which showed an alternate universe where mutants in the future were being hunted down and exterminated…simply because they were hated by humans.

I personally do not care for sci-fi movies, but years back watched planet of the apes with a friend, I never really noticed anything throughout the movie, but I wasnt really paying attention either. What caught my attention was at the end of the movie that made me question. At the end of the movie the ape-man (idk his name), was sitting in a spot light on a stage, just as abraham lincoln did after signing the imancipation proclamation…..hmmmmm

Im a sci fi nut so I already knew all of these films were based on the struggles of acceptance in society of races / oppression of races. X-men in particular. Although Fox IMO screwed up the X-Men story in their movies royally but that’s besides the point.

Bigman_213…just saw the trailer for Legion and Book of Eli…from the trailer of Legion, it looks like Gabriel is still working for God, but this time he’s following God’s order to wipe out humanity which makes sense as Gabriel is suppose to signal the apocolypse. The angel Micheal seems to be the one going against God’s orders and trying to protect humanity. The plot looks so so honestly. God sending his angels to wipe out humanity? Eh. I dont buy it. Using guns against angels? Huh?? Seems like a loosely based 21st century version of The Prophecy. That’s when Gabriel went rogue. Great movie btw.

Book of Eli, after seeing the trailer, you can’t help but to compare it to Mad Max, I am Legend and the game Fallout 3. Still looks real interesting. Havent seen Denzel doing fighting scenes since…well ever really. Hughes Bros doing the flick too? Good look.

The X-men and Planet of the Apes reference was a good point out. because Stan Lee made that reference with his band of mutants in comic book form decades before it hit the movie screen at a time when things along the lines of civil rights were at its peak. I knew about “X-Men”, and I guessed right on “Planet of the Apes”. Avatar is also supposedly about racism.

Wow. All the Star Trek bashing? The original series dealt the social issues of the 1960′s quite intelligently, I thought. The TOS episode, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield, deals specifically with race tensions of the time. The later incarnations, mainly The Next Generation, Deep Sleep, sorry SPACE, Nine, and Voyager dealt with these issues a little differently. As for this list of ” The 5 Worst “, The first four are some of my favorite movies/series.

African-Americans get more than a fare shake when it comes to Hollywood. Several movies have featured blacks in leadership roles. 2012, I Am Legend, and Book of Eli come to mind immediately. I Am Legend was totally re-written/re-imagined to accommodate a lead African-American role. There were several re-incarnations of existing superheros to accommodate AA’s as well.

I loved Brother From Another Planet and I always knew X-Men was about Malcolm and Martin. District 9 was good except it got too phoney with the fight between the bounty hunter and the main character (they could have cut that part out). I didn’t see Alien Nation. I don’t think the first Plaent of the Apes was so much about racism as its sequels.

I liked the effects, but it was like Disney’s Pochantas…girl falls for white man who saves the day. If you can get past that, then the movie was alright.

I saw both the original and the remake with Mark Wahlberg. I liked the newer version but the ending of the original still haunts me. The ending of the remake ain’t bad.

The original Day the Earth Stood Still was better than the remake despite Will Smith’s son and Jennifer Connelly.

I’m surprised that no-one recognizes the racial undertones in the Matrix. That movie is a virtual representation of the beliefs of the Nation of Islam, Marcus Garvey and the Moorish Scientists. If you ever study Elijah Muhammad’s books and Louis Farrakhan’s speeches you’ll see the Matrix in literary and oratorical form.

The Machines match the Nation’s view of the White Man or what the Nation of Islam calls the 10%. The human beings trapped in the Matrix represent those people the Nation calls the 85% and the free people who live in the underground city of Zion fit the description of the 5%; especially Morpheus, Neo and the shipmates of Nebuchadnezzar.

As someone who studies the Nation’s teachings I flipped out when I first saw the Matrix. I couldn’t believe how bold the movie makers were being because I’m used to the media trying to hide the truth of the Nation’s teachings from the masses. I didn’t realize until later that most people weren’t able to see what I was seeing because they’re not really familiar with ALL of the Nation’s beliefs. They only know what the media puts out about the Nation.

The system / powers that be, know who we are, meaning black people. It’s us as blacks who are so indoctrinated in this europeon system that we take no time to understand who we are as a race of people. We have devolved compared to how we once were during ancient times. Alot of these hollywood writers know this because many of them do research when putting out some of these films. Many of these sci fi films are also used as a tool to condition our minds to the possiblity of things that we’re not acustomed to, entering our reality.

Very good point. In the bigger scheme of things, most movies and some shows out of Hollywood have some level of agenda; some are just more subtle than others. Not only do some target race, but others target religion and any group the puppet masters in Hollywood find to be a threat.

Watching District 9, i didn’t think it was about apartheid. I ended up thinking it was about the Native Americans here.

Well a couple of people have mentioned it, but I’ll reiterate……probably one of the best sci-fi movies about racism….and with many undertones is THE MATRIX!!!!!! And as some have stated this was written by a BLACK WOMAN, whom the Wachoski brothers stole the idea from…..One brother mentioned it had alot of the undertones and teachings from the Nation of Islam……well I’ll agree to a point……but its much much bigger than that!!!!!! Obviously the machines are the oppressive whites in power in this country and across the world……but also just how most people are plugged into the matrix in the movie…..is pretty much like real life……too many people are plugged into the media, news, propaganda matrix…..which seeks to condition us all…..This site is one small tiny part of it…….It is no accident that there are so many articles on this supposed professional news site……that only stir up controversy and dissension among black people……Whether its what this racist said about black people, what black celebrity wants to announce they’re gay, what some retarded scientist tried to degrade Black Women, a hundred stories about black teens doing something ignorant, what some worthless politician and or cnn news host has said bad about Obama, some stupid article abdicating interracial dating, or stirring up controversy about it…..and just a billion and one articles putting black women/black men down, instead of lifting them up……So yeah NEWSONE, ya’ll fake azz part of the MATRIX too(hmmmm wonders if thats why they left it off the list lol) Also I have to say I never really liked and actually kind of hated all the planet of the apes movies, and never want to acknowledge that as an allegory to the plight and struggle of Black People…..#1 always hated the comparison of us to apes(actually the caucasoid man is more related to apes, and neanderthals…thats not being prejudice hateful or anything…that is scientific historical fact) #2 well I guess there is no 2, I just hate them movies period lol…….. If the authors/directors/producers of these movies admit they were inspired by the places and events that surrounded them how is it racist?
