blind

Melissa Anderson, a writer for the Dallas Observer, wrote a review of the new Sandra Bullock movie, “The Blind Side.” She condemned the movie, which tells the tale of a large mute African American who moves in with a white Christian family, as a racist story about white saviors who save downtrodden African Americans. She writes:

Blind Side the movie peddles the most insidious kind of racism, one in which whiteys are virtuous saviors, coming to the rescue of blacks who become superfluous in narratives that are supposed to be about them.

She continues:

Viewers, however, are constantly reminded of the pathologies the black gentle giant has escaped: the crack-addicted mother, the thugs of the country-ghetto housing project who offer him a 40-ouncer. Life with benevolent white people gives Michael the golden opportunity to partake in one of the most patronizing, we-are-the-world scenes imaginable: dueting with S.J. on “Bust a Move.” S.J. becomes an unbearable martinet, bossing Michael around during drills for football practice, where the large lad shines as a left tackle at the Christian academy, eventually drafted to Ole Miss. But Michael is unable to figure out what he actually needs to do on the field—until his white mama explains it to him: “This team is your family. You protect them.”

She concludes:

The filmmakers would like to lull you to sleep with this milk of amnesia, hiding behind the fact that this bewilderingly condescending movie is based on an actual person—but one who you end up knowing almost nothing about.

Interesting movie review. I was suprised when I heard Michael Oher’s situation and this family helping him. It’s really rare in the south for something to happen like this. I still wanna see the movie though.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MR_NANASTROKER/ MR_NANASTROKER

    very enlightening

i pretty much assumed thast the movie will be made 2 seem as if Black’s and their community are so acidic and devilish full of REFUGEES that it or we can only flourish or shine with the help of everyone but our own upliftment with interacting with our people

Now the anothert way 2 look at this is DIVIDE AND CONQUER
you have 2 create and set a scenario that must have valuable truths or stereotypes that can cause many assumptions by one’s own race and/or culture. This is Wllie Lynchism at it’s finest and Hollywood will continue 2 make more Fairy tales as long as they find a Nigg3r 2 play the role

Great insightful review. Exactly my thoughts when I saw the trailer for the first time.

i understand the articles view. however, this is based on a true story and hollywood always adds a little for effect. the NFLer in an interview had nothing but good to say about his wht family.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

A true story doesn’t make it a good story. This is the problem, there are many stories out in the world that can be made into movies, yet, this theme is overdone. Coincidence? Only people who are mentally asleep would think so.

When do we stop seeing this “race” helped that “race” and say this PERSON helped that PERSON. We are ALL God’s children regardless of color. Spread LOVE

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Stan_Vinyl/ Stan_Vinyl

Love_Like_Jazz… what you may be missing is the “ENABLING vs. EMPOWERING” factor or “DISENFRANCHISE THE SUBJECT FROM HIS CULTURE & MAKE HIM SERVE OUR AGENDA” Cause God knows (not really) that we can’t make it unless some white person comes along and gives us knowledge and comfort. THEN WE CAN DO ANYTHING! yeah ok.

This is a micro-cosm of how the United States treats the black community over all.

Feeding these types of how _A_ put it “themes” reinforces the subconscious mind of a targeted group of people in this and most cases “black people”

We’ll start spreadin love when Hollywood stops spreadin bullshyt!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Love_Like_Jazz/ Love_Like_Jazz

Stan_Vinyl: I definitely agree that it’s unfortunate that Hollywood feels the need to perpetuate stereotypes and create the illusion that black people need help from someone else. I honestly believe that if we’re categorizing people by the social construct of “race” then black people are one of the strongest “race.” To have endured such adversity and to have overcome it WITHOUT someone’s help is more than admirable. I just envision a time when we celebrate that we are all PEOPLE and should help one another whenever we can…terribly optimistic.

So to all the people who are attacking those of us who think this is some brainwashing B.S…

What about all the men & women who came from the same circ**stances and achieved on their own thru inovation, perseverance & inner strength?

What, the story line of a black man or woman helping themselves thru school and making it to some form of high profession is sending the wrong signals?

For all the times this has been done in Hollywood, they gave us “Akeelah and the bee” & “The pursuit of Happyness”

Remember racsim is about oppressing the minds and physical attributes of another culture to present your culture as being better… Black people are more the project have nots waiting for the great white hope to carry us to a better life!

Get over yourselves and your “knowledge” Stan_Vinyl and _A_ and everyone who thinks like you.

Sure there’s racism, and sure Hollywood does some ridiculous shyte, but is that any excuse for you to be as jaded and poisonous as this article’s writer?

Like someone mentioned, the story IS real. It is of a BLACK man in a WHITE family. This isn’t about the WHITE folks swooping in and snatching him away from BLACK folks to claim his “glory” as thiers. This is about a child who was abandoned by his family who was RESCUED by another family. The skin color just adds texture to the story.

And that is what people want to see when they go to the movies.

You say why doesn’t Hollywood show more stories of black people yada yada yada, what is Hollywood now? Your social conscience?

And I know when you say “HOLLYWOOD”, y’all mean “WHITE-Y. Ok, have you watched PRECIOUS? Someone mentioned that they’re both out at the same time. Go watch it and compare the two stories. They both put young black children in the thick of things.

Why don’t you save your “knowledge” and b*tching for trying to solve the problems that put them there in the first place instead of wasting time on how someone spins their story?

    blaque_thot,

With little respect for what you actually said and the fact it was direct solely towards me and _A_, I still respect the fact you have an opinion. (barely)

But an opinion is all it is, I will kick my knowledge when and where ever the phucc I want to, that’s my right as a sovereign mind… I earned the shyt out of my knowledge, So to be intelligent and still say phucc hollywood is my muh-phuccin prerogative.

Right the phucc on MR_NANASTROKER for exposin’ lame tactics… If I’m ever off like that please feel free to smash my THOT as well!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blaque_thot/ blaque_thot

You’re kicking “knowledge” on Hollywood. Which is like having a debate on the philosophical relevance of spit.

Don’t hype yourself too much man, you’re not the only kid on the short bus, the only reason I called you both out by name is cos you were the first to drool on here. Now Mr_didlystroker has popped his head and it’s timeto play whac-a-mole for a sec.

Ok, let me break it down in three sentences. Racism exists. Some white people see nothing good in black people just as some black people see nothing good in white people…long sentence but please try to keep up. Just as some don’t, there are still some white people who don’t care about skin color just as there are some blacks who look past skin color.

Now, here’s the real question. Was the woman in the story someone who felt that black people can’t do anything right on their own and need a white angel to come save them OR was she a woman who saw a child in need and stepped in?

Apparently, you think she’s in the first category while I believe she’s in the second. If that makes you Stan the man or strokes your ego, so be it…I’d rather head for the light than stay groping in the dark.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/d1blackmogul/ d1blackmogul

Since this movie is based on a true story and the movie critic has a problem with the story being tol… I’m assuming she also has a problem with the family taking the young man in and helping… After all, had they not helped him in the first place there would be no story to be told…

Or is white people helping black people a form of racism ???

Bagger Vance or The Secret Life of Bees anyone? Can anyone tell me the TRUE STORY of a Black family taking in a white kid? (I know they exist but off the top of your head do you?). What most of you miss is the fact that there are some very altruistic white families out there (Black as well) who care and try to help those in need. I understand this story because both my parents got sick when I was 15… Who was it that took me in? I really HATE when people expose their own trained and conditioned minds. The FACT of the matter is this movie has a racist underline like about 90% of movies that are made in Hollywood. Movies like this shows why black people (collectively) are still waaayyyyyy behind from a mental standpoint. We’ve been oppressed so hard that we don’t even know when we’re being made fun. To understand this train of thought is to understand history and understanding that HISTORY SHAPES the PRESENT. We still live in a very racist society. The people that STILL don’t understand this is what Malcolm X called “house niggas.” Please gather as best an understanding as possible of the Willie Lynch philosophy, Cornell West’s title Race Matters. Just to give you all a place to start. The racism in this movie is not only blatant but old and tiresome. Wake up people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/reaction80/ reaction80

The sad part of the responses I came across (and in the streets) is mostly black women (not all but enough) are the biggest critics when it comes to speaking out against racism. At least the ones who are “educated” and have a degree in something. What good is a college degree is one lacks common sense. This movie is further confirmation that we as black people are more ignorant to this disease than whites are and it’s why we sell out. It’s why we act as though racism is virtually non-existent. We’ve been trained well and it SHOWS. After all, this is the same society that tells us hip hop is better than ever yet we hear what it speaks about (mostly negativity) but we’ll spend our money and support these artists despite the messages. Well again, this movie is just another example of our ignorance!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blakpoet_1/ blakpoet_1

Why don’t everything have to be racist? Racism only exist because we allow it, whether between races or within the race. my 6yr old cousin told his mom that he wish that he was white because there was a white girl in his class that he likes(KIDS). His mom told him that he don’t have to change his skin color to go with a girl. That was erasing racism. If we are TRUE CHRISTIANS then we teach our children love for all not some. ONLY GOD WILL JUDGE US, for all the rest is just other’s opinion.40 ounces and crack head mothers are part of every race but only the black race but their’s in movies for the world to form it’s opinion about us. So we have done this to ourself, and when I say we I don’t nean me because I don’t support movies or shows or book, or music of that nature.

I have to admit, the writer brings up a very good point. Name one movie in which the benevolent black family helps the down trodden white one? Sure its based on a rela life story but part of the questions is how much is real and how much is Hollywood?
Case in point MR Drummond and Arnold and Willis, Alea KArras and Webster, etc. Everyone remembers when white america ( on tv) was adopting black children. You remember the show where the black family adopted the white kid? PRobably not because it didn’t happen.

Okay…….I saw the previews to this movie and I thought to myself after rolling my eyes “Oh no, here comes another football movie about a white person saving the black man[person]“. It’s ANNOYING. Remember Dangerous Minds? Okay, that was IT for me. I don’t need to be reminded that there are good “white” people out there. But, I will say this: I think that that Hollywood makes a lot of money off these types of movies, because they keep making them. Seems like every year since “Remember the Titans”, you get a new “racist” football movie. HA! I think white people enjoy watching these movies. They like to feel good about themselves, like after they watch the movie they go help a black person and then pat themselves on the back. Ah boy………

I don’t need to feel a white person needs to save me. Only God and through his so Jesus Christ I can be saved. If this movie was just an innocent movie, than about a person helping someone outside their race, than why not use an Asian person or an Indian person? Why do we have to do the whole “black” and “white” thing every time in Hollywood? It makes you think if the other races feel left out? LOL!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SincereNow/ SincereNow

This is a sad situation. Case and point, all we can do is criticize this movie saying it is racist because a white family decided to help a young black man. Did anyone stop and think why didn’t a BLACK family that is well off take this young man in and do the same thing? Why don’t black people take care of their own when they see a problem? How come it is always a white family? Maybe because we don’t look after each other and take care of each other. But we are so quick to yell racism that we don’t stop to think about what is really going on. And who are we do refute this movie. It is a real life story that happen to a member of the NFL team the Baltimore Ravens now. He advocated for the movie because it is his life story and he wanted it to be told. We should be happy that another young Black man isn’t out there being a stereotype and making something of himself. Instead, we as a people rather say this movie is racist. It is sad and i think the movie is probably a good one and I can’t wait to see it!

I totally agree with you danflu12, Goodness not everyone wants to go through life holding a grudge against a measly color barrier. God doesn’t see color and he uses in and everyone to get his point across and i think it highly immoral to read so far into something that’s meant to uplift and bring hope, Just be glad it wasn’t degrading, i mean i could see if Sandra bullock was calling the man out his name. All of you, need to get over your damn insecurities and except the fact that love goes beyond just a black and white house hold but a mixed one. We all carry a mixed heritage and it would be nice to hear the positive and uplifting things for a change. We already get enough hate from the prejudice against the color of our skin. Why can’t we embrace someone trying to help. Keep throwing the color barrier into everything and u will always be bound and will never reach your dreams because you can’t get past a stop sign…..THE skies the limit. U.N.I.T.Y that’s a UNITY

This is the biggest crock I’ve ever heard …. well, not ever, but heard in a long time – but typical of the BS floating around BP. If you’re tired of the story, then write – LIVE – a new one. BE the Black family that takes in someone in need. BE the responsible parent who doesn’t sacrifice your children for sex or drugs. Turn your own life into a screenplay and get it made into a movie. Until then, shut up. Good Lord!

Did anyone email Michael Oher and ask him if HE thinks it’s BS?

    Get over yourselves.

Fa real doe…? Racist? Come on, man. If a black family had taken him in it would have been blown up like that family were heros or something. If white people being cruel to blacks is racist and white people being kind to blacks is ALSO racist can someone explain to me how can white people not be racist?…I’m confused.

This is reaching. I didnt view it as racism at all. Its based on a true story, Im interested in seeing Michael Oher’s story, if it was a white player in the league who went thru what he had went thru and was taken in by a black family Id be interested in seeing that story as well.

It is a real thing everyday that people r on drugs and that lifestyle does happen so lets look at the positive and stop always tryn to use our color to pick a fight about something!

I don’t care for the movie. Not going to go see it. It’s always has to be the “White” people helping the “poor negro” they never show stories of Black people helping whites……

oh wait why doesn’t Tyler Perry do this type of movie??? He does have the money, the studio, the following….oh yeah he likes to do he/she movies ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh.

Black people why we keep complaining bout the same mess? We got our own, we can do our own. We choose who we support so………………….

It seems to me that the young man needed help and as usual african americans did not step up to the plate. So why are people complaining. Stop it and see the good in it. Maybe God shent her into that young man’s life.

Why must everything be a race issue? I’m so tired of people throwing out the race card, its getting so crazy that some people can’t distinguish between plain old disrespect and real racism. I feel that this was a positive movie about helping another when they are down and i plan to see it. Its people like Ms. Anderson from the Dallas Observer that people cannot overcome racism. Now by me mentioning this am I saying that racism doesn’t exist because I would be lying to you, but what I am saying is not everything is racism!

I see the point the writers trying to make, they never would have made a movie about this story had it been a black family taking the boy in. We never see any movies of black people helping out white folks…guess that never happens.

I look down this column of comments and I dont see ONE white dude sayin anything…lol. You know why?…cuz our relationship (black/white people) has ALWAYS been a traumatic one. There is waaaaay too much history between us to think that these theories of subliminal racism and thoughts of “the subconscious white takeover” will ever dissipate. But seriously, this was based on a true story!…this really happened!.LOL. So its not a Hollywood controversy that was fabricated in the minds of WHITEYS snarling over their brew of racism stew in a boardroom coaxing some subliminal plan to rule the black man!.LMAO. But dont get me wrong….theres LOTS of reeeeally racist crap in movies/TV/advertising.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LAeddie/ LAeddie

Admittedly, I had the same misgivings when I first saw the movie promoted. Still, being that is a true story (like it or not), why is it that no Black people/family reached out to help this young Black man?

    Yeah, excuses are many.

I don’t like seeing the white savior thing either, but Blackfolks are at fault for allowing this situation from happening in the first place.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aftaschoolspecial/ aftaschoolspecial

When I first saw the advertisement my first thought was not again. Time and time again, fiction or non-fiction, we see the “white savior” coming to the rescue of a minority. Dangerous Minds, Take the Lead, and even in TV: Webster, Different Strokes. My question is when will we see a reverse of this plot? A black family that takes in a white child resulting in the child becoming successful at something… anything.

To those that make the argument that this was “based on a true story”, you have to remember that it is the writers discretion what they will include in the storyline. Also, it is the directors discretion of what he feels is important enough, or relevant to the story they are trying to convey. “Based on a true story” is another way of saying, all of this is BS. “Rocky” was based on a true story. “A Soldier’s Story” was based on a true story. Don’t be fooled by that account. That is just a way for Warner Brothers to separate a fool from his money.

As I watched the movie Saturday, I KNEW some angry black would find fault in the movie. Nevermind the fact that it actually happened…

I guess they should change the true story and re-write history to satisfy you people who like to complain about EVERYTHING! Some black folks are never happy and must take a story about a brother who beat the odds and became a future NFL star and turn it into a race issue because white people helped him. You people need a hobby or something to occupy your time from finding negatives in what should be positive.

I’m not gonna be too hard on it since it’s a true story. My issue is how much more serious the book was compared to this fluffy ass movie. They sprinkled too much sugar on it and it totally lost the book’s impact. Had to dumb it down for the masses I guess.

    The Length that Hollywood and these Film Prod. Comp. 2 take a TRUE STORY(and many have said through-out that the Book vs the Movie has 10% relevance Because Hollywood has 2 make the movie appealing so if you are familiar with the radius of a pie…this gives you an Idea of how much the Book Hollywood scrapped and added BS in the script 2 generate;
    1) Money
    2) Investing in Advertisement for this movie(because the plot is exhausted)
    3) Money
    4) The usual Hollywood Rules and there is 1 rule of thumb in Hollywood and that is YOUR MOVIE THAT YOU WANT 2 PRODUCE HAS 2 EITHER STAR/CO-STAR A CAUCASIAN HEROINE within the script. Now this is fitting 4 this Movie being that(I have not saw the Movie but I am taking a ballpark estimate) I am pretty sure this NARROWED what race of Extra’s the movie needs and WHO the REAL LEADING ACTRESS IS 4 this type of REAL LIFE movie. So, due 2 this Hollywood will have the Real Reason why the Book has been formatted in2 a movie 2 have the Black Actor express and display many emotions…the few that will stand out is(from fin 2 end)–Despair, Fear, Low Self Esteem, on his last breathe, Fear due 2 the oppression within his own Community and Household, Brief period of depression and anxiety….the family takes him under their wings….glim feelin of hope, childish, Fear(doubt), Gains Hope, smiles 4 the first time, starts 2 feel worthy, struggles being able 2 handle hard tasks, she puts him in check(tuff love), He shows promise, now he endures a few obstacles with the Families Guidance, faces his toughest challenge and Victory he gets drafted!
Now mind you I have NOT SEEN nor do I want 2 see the Movie but this is the manner of order of emotions displayed through-out the movie and the shlt is cliche’d 2 many times in many forms of Movies whether it B sports or non-related but the Degradation of the BackMan/Woman/Family is the Heart & Soul 4 Hollywood 2 get it’s Dlck hard and get a nut off this type of shlt!!

This is Wllie Lynchism at it’s finest and Hollywood will continue 2 make more HalfTrith/Fairy tales as long as they find a Nigg3r 2 play the role

A true story doesn’t make it a good story. This is the problem, there are many stories out in the world that can be made into movies, yet, this theme is overdone. Coincidence? Only people who are mentally asleep would think so.

Remember racsim is about oppressing the minds and physical attributes of another culture to present your culture as being better… Black people are more Than project have nots waiting for the great white hope to carry us to a better life!

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A WHITE LEAD OR SUPPORTING ACTOR/ACTRESS fuk you and yo script nlgga!! Danny Glover–John Singleton (xperienced this with Fast and Furious) Glover wants 2 make a movie based on L’ouveture Toussaint the french revolutionist….YOU THINK THEY WILL GIVE HIM A BUDGET 2 SHOW BLACKS FIGHTING AND KILLING FOR THEIR FREEDOM FROM OPPRESSION AND OWN THE LAND AND GOVERN THE COUNTRY THROUGH THESE ACTIONS?????? shiiiiiitt

i’m tired of all these bullsh!t stories from newsone. It’s a true story the brotha plays for the ravens they showed him and his family when i got drafted. Why does everything have to be racism with them. Everybody has their own opinion i understand that but sometimes they need to keep it to themselves. This is the first time i commented on their bullsh!t and i for one am tired of it. I don’t care what color they are they are a family that took a boy in and put him thru school and made him into something. We should all be happy that he’s succesful

idk if the movie is racist or not but it seems like everybody is throwing out the word racism like its a dang disease these days. it looks like a good movie but ill just wait until it comes out on hbo or showtime because it just seems like they are trying to acknowledge only sandra bullock instead of all the other characters. and when i look at the picture above, it does kinda reminds you of the green mile with a different scenario.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aftaschoolspecial/ aftaschoolspecial

Nah kellz916… you be happy for them. I come from rural south. My grandmother and grandfather, working as a maid and fisherman respectively, later selling produce on the roadside, put 9 children through college who all became educators. Raising 30 more grandchildren who all went to College and became lawyers, engineers, a dentist, and educators. That’s a real story. But that will never make it to the silver screen.

Based on a real story or not, is this the only story line that is adequate to put on the silver screen? This story has been worked to death. You act as though this movie is isolated from all the other movies just like it because they wrote “based on a true story”. Why this story? Why not some other story? What makes this story spectacular? Why not a movie of the continuous struggle all black people go through? Navigating the battle of feelings within and circ**venting the outward attitudes? What makes this story unique? What’s your struggle? What’s your parents struggle? What’s was your grandparent’s struggle? This is not a coincidence that this story was made into a movie, book or no book. You always have to question what someone’s motives are when they do something. Again, is there no fictional or non-fictional story of a black family that has taken in a white child and facilitated their success (excluding “The Jerk” with Steve Martin)?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not telling you not to go see the movie and enjoy it. I’m saying you won’t catch me in a theater watching this. Even when it comes to TV, you won’t get any Neilson ratings off me.

LOL… look at that… Morgan Freeman can’t play Nelson Mandella galvanizing his country’s soccer team without Matt Damon making his soap box speech motivating the team to win.

Its so crazy how we(black people) are done. When is the last time you saw Roots on TV? When is the last time PBS showed “Eyes on the Prize”?

You, as a black person, don’t deserve to see any images on TV that motivate you to be determined to strive for something better. Everything is rapping, dancing, shuckin’ and jivin’, and bojanglin’…

I agree with Mr_Nanastroker (not the name)… we are always instructed by our white savior… “Let me see a smile… ah… you’re so cute… see, life isn’t all that bad… with my help… you can become anything you want to be on this silver screen.” As long as its in the fields of sports, curb-side pharmacist, or some other type of criminal.

Hollywood LOVES movies with whites swooping in to rescue or shape and guide downtrodden backwards Black men in the right direction. A Time to Kill, The Express, The Green Mile, Dangerous Minds, damn near every Cuba Gooding jr. flick etc. etc.

This is exactly why the Blaxploitation movement took off, because while the movies weren’t great Black people enjoyed seeing Black men portrayed in a manner that didn’t rely upon a white savior to right the wrongs and save the day.

Debate it all you want but if it’s not racism it’s paternalism. Either way I’m not going to be paying to see it … bring on the Ninja Assassins!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ron247/ Ron247

Well I think a lot of you readers are missing her point here, basically if things in the movie were reversed which it would not be becuase that would be frowned upon by the media and black people with the money and ability are too scared to do it, let’s say the movie was based around a black family taking in a white boy who happened to be in the same situation as this guy, you would not have so much noise about it becuase it’s not expected. So basically it’s not trying to find racism in every little thing but saying more of try something different instead of the same old stereotype. I hope this clears up what the writer said in a nut shell.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_KeithMD_/ _KeithMD_

Maybe there is something wrong with me! I haven’t seen the movie yet but since I live in Dallas I wish I could have seen it with Melissa! OMG, do we as black people have to find “racism” in every aspect of our existence?

The issue from reading this her view of the movie is that a white family helped a young black male and lead him out of the stupidity black people seem to bathe in daily. What truly bothers me about Melissa’s view is that she fails to see the humanity of people helping people. Whether they were white or black or yellow, it matters not. Only that a young man was helped.

See I remember seeing that young man on NFL Draft day and hearing ESPN tell the story of how he went from nothing to the NFL and I see no racism in the story. What I see is a story of someone giving a damn enough to help someone off the street.

I wonder how willing Melissa is to help someone(any race) off the street, take them into her home and see them have a better life!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mariana321/ mariana321

Why does everything always have to be about racism??? Can’t everyone just get over the fact that not only white people are racist.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aftaschoolspecial/ aftaschoolspecial

Forget the racism tag people are throwing around about this movie. The question remains unanswered, why hasn’t a movie about a black family facilitating a white child’s success been created? The reason most people against this movie really don’t view Michael Oher’s story as remarkable is because if you’re black, you’ve been that person to overcome some obstacles. IMBD synopsis: A poor, oversized and under-educated teenager is recruited by a major college football program where he is groomed into an athletically and academically successful NFL prospect. Now, how many people knew a football player in college that this describes? Most black athletes that make it to the NFL had a story like this.

This truly has a hidden agenda. I see the two arguments for the movie: 1. It’s a true story, 2. It had a positive outcome. I’ll give you those. The sad part is this story isn’t unique. Millions of black families have done this with their own children. Why is it such a phenomenon that a white family managed to help a black child be successful? Isn’t that what they always do? Michelle Pfeiffer did it. Philip Drumond did it. George Papadapolis did it for Webster. Antonio Banderas did it As Piere Dulaine.

Webster synopsis: The post-retirement season is suddenly disrupted for football player George Papadapolis and his wife Katherine when Webster, the orphaned son of a former teammate, moves in. Laughter — and life lessons — in every episode.

Take the Lead synopsis: The real story of a dance teacher who believed in the talent of a group of problem kids.

Diff’rent Strokes: The misadventures of a rich Manhattan family who adopted the children of their late African American maid.

Are black families not strong enough to mold and shape a young black child to become successful? Are white families better providers because they have resources black families don’e have? Are black children more equipped to become successful because they are living with in an environment where they aren’t struggling from day to day? What is the message the movie is trying to convey? Its not just a movie for movies sake. It is a message. What is the message the movie is trying to convey? What summarized the story?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BruceWayne2001/ BruceWayne2001

Here’s a thought. Maybe, just maybe that family wouldn’t have adopted him if his mother wasn’t a freakin crackhead! Michael Oher would’ve grown up in a good home, but it didn’t work out that way. It is good to see a young brother not become a permanent fixture in the penial system.

I am happy that a family(no matter the color)took in an African American youngster. We know many African American children aren’t being adopted anyway.

If the author is soooo upset that a white family swooped in and took Michael in, why doesn’t she adopt an African American child?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GOT-FLAVA1/ GOT-FLAVA1

OK Black people calm down. When I saw the trailer of this movie, i have to admit i did first get upset. It was showing a white well to do family taking in an impoverished black man. I see this all the time on paid programming where u can save an impoverished, malnutritioned african. 60 mins even ran a story like 2 yrs ago of a rich white man adopting some boys for the Sudan during their purge. So what is really goin on in this movie? Racism? Not exactly. The movie itself is not racist. Im for one glad that the brother was able to making out of a tough situation. Not so many in the hood are that fortunate. Be it a white person or a black person its the act of human kindness this movie portrays. HOWEVER, why is it that Hollywood only wants to show this type of movie on tv and in the movie theater? Anyone remember Public Enemy’s “Hollywood Burn” song? Its the constant barrage of films from both Black and white producers that are making movies for a buck based on the blight of black people. But it goes without saying that the Black community does have problems that need fixing. The longer and further we run away from our problems the more they fester and become worse.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GOT-FLAVA1/ GOT-FLAVA1

One more thing I hope this brother doesnt look down on the Black community and uses his struggle to help correct some of the problems of the community. This movie or his life struggle will serve no purpose if he just makes it and is live nice in the comforts of luxury. If that becomes the case then, he will then become PART of the problem instead of the solution. You can cocoon yourself not to the real problems of the black community until the hit home……..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mrteeeze/ mrteeeze

I knew when I saw the previews I wanted to see the movie. I took my eight year old son to see it. I am all about my blackness and I don’t have a problem putting whitey in there place when needed. But like another writer said where were our Influential black families, that could have stepped in and helped this young man? There weren’t any. The point of the matter is Micheal recieved a blessing from God it just happened to be in the form of a white Christian family. No Racism Involved at all, before you jump to conclusion and go to calling Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, and the NAACP go and see the movie. It was a good positive movie. A young black man who had been dealt a s**tty hand of cards got a second chance, and look where he is now. Shame on all who say the movie is racist that is so far from the truth. I’m going to go ahead and comment on this before I read it. I heard this young man tell his story a couple of years ago way before the movie came out. This movie does not stray from the truth at all. If you’re a college football fan you probably saw it. His story had to touch someone deeply to be made into a movie. This is just a good oppurtunity for the ones that did not see the special to experience it. It’s the truth and there’s nothing racist about it.

Here we go again trying to make something out of nothing. My poor black race is always looking for a scapegoat in everything. Why no black family stepped up to the plate and help him, because we to busy trying to hold each other down. I dont care what situation a black person is born into today you cant blame racism for everything. When my grandparents were young it was different, nowadays all kids have to do is go to school and get and education, but they dont do that, they say because i am from the hood i was forced into this lifestyle, bulls**t black kids have every opportunity to get an education but they choose not to because they think selling drugs is an easy way out or I dont have to learn because I am going to be a rapper, and they other thing is our celebrities are no type of role models at all half of the rappers claim to have been some kind of kingpin misleading the youth into thinking that well this is my way out, until black people meaning we dont get our s**t together we will always be looking to blame something on somebody else. We need to take care of our own and when somebody else steps up when we where supposed to dont call it racism.

I saw the doc**entary on this young man a while back and this story is very true. His mother was a crack addict and a white family did take him in and change his life around. She should be asking why didn’t a black family step up and do the same thing this white family did. I agree with redfoxxray…always trying to make something out of nothing.

I saw the movie this past weekend. I think who ever wrote this blogg is really reaching…..I think they also forgot this movie is based off a TRUE STORY!!! I’m sure they added a little hallmark touch here and there but this is based off TRUE EVENTS. So how is that its about whites being the “saviour” for our people??? This film represents hope….hope for anyone. Hope that if provided an opportunity to succeed in life that your dreams are obtainable. You failed to mention that this black man raised his grades up, got an education and made it to the NFL. HE DID, the “white folks” didn’t do that for him. So many time we are given opportunites and the tools to succeed in life but we have excuse on why can obtain them because of our environment, “the white man” etc. because no one really wants to put in the effort of doing WORK to get there.

Stop trying to tear another Black man down from success. He was provided a rare opportunity to make something of himself and did and now can be a postive role model for young children out there…

Look, did so what if the white family helped out the young black guy. Did any black family step up and fill that role.? I didn’t think so.. So the same way they stepped in another family could have. So until people like the critic step out of their shoes and into someone else’s and help out a stranger become a better man they need to accept movies for what they are and that’s entertainment. No ‘true story’ movie is ever full of the ‘WHOLE’ truth anyway…

okay,i agree in principle with ms. anderson.

YES, how many movies and shows depict black teachers/educators as effete until a ‘young, white teacher’ from ‘outside the system’ comes in and helps?

there have been plenty of these kinds of pictures around.

but guess what…people go to this movie can give less than a damn about the black kid, and everything about sandra bullock. this is a sandra bullock vehicle.

i mean, in action movies, 999 out of 1000, men go to see things go ‘boom’, guys fight, people killed, fast cars, etc. not one guy i know sees ‘fast and furious’ for a deep insight into the female psyche, or to REALLY REALLY look at how women are objectified.

    they go to see:

    1) fast cars;
    2) guys getting beat down;
    3) sexy chicks in short skirts, tight clothes and heels.

    period.

well, anyone going to see ‘blind side’ is going for sandra bullock…the black kid and his story are just backdrop.

i mean, folks didn’t watch ‘tarzan’ to understand more about the pseudo africans (watch tarzan flicks from the 30s and 40s…a couple of brothers have CONKS). they go to see tarzan wrestle alligators and to see a relatively scantily clad jane (by those times standards) prance about.

We should be glad that a movie is showing a black man raisng out of the mess he was dealt with in life and making something of himself! And to the people who seem to have a problem with a movie thats BASED on a TRUE STORY, how bout you go write your own movie where the black family takes in a white child and produce it. At some point all black families has someone who’s opened their homes to the children of others. We all know someone who is raising someone else’s child. It’s ABSOLUTE BS that black folks don’t care or don’t step up. They wanted the movie deal, they wrote and sold the script. I think these people scouted Michael. With their own teens in the home, Michael would have been a huge security risk. They didn’t just open their homes to any teen son of an addicted mother. They decided they wanted the deal and found the right child to foster. I wonder what Michael’s profit percentage is on this venture?

WRONG. This is a movie about some fictitious people in a MOVIE.

The good thing about the Internet is, everyone can express their opinion on it. The bad thing about the Internet is, EVERYONE CAN EXPRESS THEIR OPINION ON IT. That’s just too much damn information buzzing around inside our heads.

The plain truth: there are a LOT of confused, frightened, crazy mofos in this world and the INTERNET has just given them a place to gain an audience and a platform to rant on and on about a bunch of meaningless foolishness. We are turning (we have turned) into a nation of NEUROTICS, second-guessing and questioning every little detail of everything we see, until we are IMMOBILIZED BY FEAR AND INDECISION AND LOW SELF ESTEEM. I have to disagree w/DavettaLashley b/c the critique expresses my feelings in regards to these types of films. It’s not that I think the act of kindness was racist. It’s in the nature of some to be exploitive. I like Bullock. When interviewed she called the family “lilly white”, she seemed uncomfortable; lilly white sounded like a racial slur. If Bullock gets it, I’m cool w/that. I think the end goal was the movie deal, the act of kindness, a method and Michael, a know-nothing actor on their stage.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/crammasters/ crammasters

These “white savior” themes have been around since the days of Tarzan movies, which perpetuated the myth that blacks (Africans) were less
civilized than a savage, illiterate white man in a loincloth who communicated with grunts, head nods, and chest thumps. The overriding messages in these white benefactor/pitiful black dependent films is: to be black is to be miserable — not because of the racism that causes extreme poverty — but because of other defective black people. The underlying message is the only salvation for these pitiful (savage) blacks are decent white people with hearts of gold. While there is nothing wrong with whites helping blacks, or with blacks helping whites; what it is dangerous (psychologically for blacks) is the lack of balance, and the missing images and stories of black people (and Africans) helping themselves AND each other. The pitiful blacks/benevolent whites images foster the (false) perception that blacks are incapable of helping themselves and are unwilling to help each other. It is easy to understand why so many blacks think we cannot function without the goodwill of whites, and why so many whites believe they have done enough for those “ungrateful blacks” who have no right to complain about anything, let alone racism. The TRUTH is MOST black people are helped (or rescued) by OTHER BLACK PEOPLE, be they family, friends, church members, teachers, neighbors — NOT by total strangers — black or white, or white benefactors who appear out of the mist. (excerpted from “Trojan Horse: Death of a Dark Nation”)

I have not seen this movie and hope not to. What I have seen in its promotions, is a poor young black young man who had no home life so was taken in by a rich family. The poor young black man made it big in football and a celebration of all of this makes the movie.

It makes me want to puke. I am white and it looks like a big piece of racist crap. It LOOKS to me like this was a PROJECT that the dyed blonde woman worked up. Poor poor little black boy needs to be very grateful to the white privileged family.

I keep thinking of how many black families have HAD to DEDICATE their lives to the care of a little white child; in slavery blacks were made to dedicate their lives to the welfare of whites, following slavery, in order to get by, blacks have had to dedicate their lives to white people, and, probably hundreds of thousands of times, blacks have voluntarily given their ALL to the welfare of a white in need.

I am not impressed by this family. Perhaps the father had good intentions, I don’t think men take in “projects” so much, but what I have seen of this woman; she looks like a person looking for a project, in order to have control and get acclamation.

Perhaps if the movie took a different tack, such as showing the debt that whites have towards blacks due to slavery, and that this is a drop in the bucket for paying back. But even that is not appropriate, because the story still acts as if whites are good for sharing their privilege to blacks who should be grateful. Whites have not paid in reparations to blacks for suffering that happened in slavery and STILL goes on. Blacks are owed A LOT by this government; a he** of a lot. Blacks are owed a he** of a lot by our laws, by our education system, by job developers. In every aspect of life, black people are owed one he** of a lot.

The movie could have taken another angle; a family was in obvious need to bring someone in in order to function as a happy family. Maybe if the premise of the movie was that a young black man came in and saved the family, it would have been appropriate.

It is only decent, (the RIGHT thing to do,) that a person with privilege pass it on. If you are going to make a movie about the ONE time that whites do it, ignore the hundreds of thousands of times that a black person does it, it is racist.

Even better…make a movie about blacks who have SACRIFICED to get a white person or family on track; THAT would be appropriate. A white family takes in one black and helps him…this happened once and a big, fat movie is made. How many black families have done the same thing, with no accalade and no money; when blacks have done this, they gave of THEMSELVES.

I have not yet seen this movie, but as a football fan I am familiar with the storyline…I agree entirely with your viewpoint about this common narrative in many films…and I am not 100% sure on the facts involved(what was left out/put into the movie), but it is based on a true story…So muddling the facts about the relationship between races here is irrelevant…what I think is the issue is Hollywood’s fascination with telling stories like this and the constant bombardment in the media about them. Please tell me a positive story for once, that doesn’t involve a white saviour…
Michael Oher was drafter first round by the Ravens and was one of the runners up for Rookie of the Year…This is an impressive accomplishment for anyone. Whether he had a white, Asian, Middle Eastern or Russian family rescue him is secondary to where he is now because of that.
I can only hope that someone spends the time telling stories that do not re-enforce racial hierarchies and still promote wonderful success stories

Interesting how some of my brothers and sisters are complaining about this movie being racist because it depicts a true story of a rich white family saving a poor black teen-ager. But isn’t that what the Democratic Party has been for most of the past 70 years? The party that 90% of African Americans vote for and are members of?
Why is it okay for Big Daddy Lilly White Government to give black folks a handout, but not private white individuals? Who do you think the majority of the tax payers are who are footing the bill for these Big Dady Government programs that are allegedly to help black folks? Since most Americans are white, it’s mostly whites footing the bill with their tax money. Why aren’t you complaining about that?
Seems to me, these very same Big Daddy Lilly White Programs that were set up to save black people–the very ones vast majority of blacks seem to have no trouble supporting–have caused much of the problems in the black community that Touhy had to suffer from–broken home (70% of black children are born out of wedlock), drugs (Touhy’s mother was a crack addict)….
Any African American who denounces this movie and paternalistic and condescending to blacks should switch to the Republican Party for fear being labeled a hypocrit, at least!

I see the logic in the topic of this discussion, i mean when was the last time they made a movie about a down and out “white” teen being taken in by a “black” family and turning his life around and making it to the NFL? Are there not any privileged black families in America? Maybe blacks harbor too much animosity to do such a thing for a white kid anyway, considering the fact that whites were never slaves, and never had to endure the pain and suffering that blacks have, and are still enduring to this day. I wouldn’t say the movie is a racist, because i personally have had experiences where white people have helped me before my own family would, but i do see the point of this discussion about white people always coming to “save the day”!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1NiceFella/ 1NiceFella

One more thing, the way history shaped this country, black people are too busy trying to play “catch up” to white people anyway, so most blacks don’t have the advantage that they have anyway, not to sound inferior or anything! Hell, if you were homeless and had someone give you a place to stay and new clothes, and food to eat would u turn it down because they weren’t your kind? I know it can be embarrassing and humiliating being taken in by strangers, but what other options did he have people?

Oh how they love to show black pathologies in Hollywood mainstream films. The constant association of Blacks with poverty and violence amazes me. This is not a factual “true” story and the filmmakers take liberties with this film. This film is filled with stereotypes, not archetypes. Why couldn’t the young man be good at math? This way… they could learn something from him as well. He is either being lectured, scolded or pitied. The main character is used as a mascot or a prop to tell a story that makes Sandra Bullock (who is one-dimensional) look like a great savior.

This is the multicultural society we live in today, alot of white have more sympathy and understanding for the less fortunate individuals in the black community. Who is to say that they do not care or love like we do. Come on, when are we going to look at actual facts and notice that we are the ones keeping ourselves back. The problem once again is imagery. Of course if this white family can bring some happiness and stability in the life of this young Black male, hoorah. That being said, what is literally FORCED down the throats of people, Black people in particular is the image of this over and over. The same old white “savior” story line over and over. Not that being a savior is a negative, but geez are there any Black ones for white folks? Are there not any stories that depict Black people taking in a young white male or female for that matter, nurturing them, providing a home for them, etc? I think there are, but you won’t see that on the silver screen. There have been stories, especially in the south of dirt poor white folks coming to Black folks for help and getting it. But you don’t see that on the silver screen, do you? For all the “priviledge” that white folks have, it is no wonder that they are depicted as the “savior” of Black folks. However, for all the disadvantages that Black people have endured, they have opened their hearts and homes to white people, (who can’t seem to get help from their “priviledged brethen and sisteren) but that has not been displayed for all to see, has it? You see, in the human family, help is help, no matter where you get it, but when you live in a society, that classifies you by a check box, lumps you in a category, discriminates by that category and still wants to say we are ALL Americans, there is a bit of hyprocisy there, don’t you think? Kinda makes you go, HMMMMMMM…. Well, let’s examine White Supremacy…if you dare. After all, it is a SCIENCE.

I dont see anyone talking about the Secret Life of Bees where a young white girl seeks out and is taken in by a Black woman and her sisters and helped and raised . These are movies and shouldnt be taken on the basis of black and white but about how God can put love and compassion into anyones heart take on a person who is having a hard time or down and out and provide the love, help and compassion they need to get through. I rather liked Precious and Blind Side. Precious to me was a movie that shows what happens to alot of our children weather black or white or mexican or whatever it happens. And so they show white people taking intrest it was a movie a vision the writer had on how he wanted to present it . And in Blind Side look at how Michael was treated by the people who he thought cared about him and how he was tossed about . I look at it as God put it into this womans heart to help someone who needed it and God put them in the position to meet for him to get what he needed. I guess because I have an opened mind and am a child of God I dont see black or white in these circ**stances just that they were Delivered by our Lord and savior and given a chance . And I look at how I help others I am there for anyone who needs love compassion and encouragment whearthe black, white, asian,hispanic..ect. if the lord puts it on my heart to help where I can I do.If we all would take the time to help each other and love and uplift each and show compassion to each other this world would be a better place. Giving a home to anyone homeless is of course a good thing and more people should do it. But I felt that this film was told from an almost totally white perspective (and I am white myself) whereas Precious was told from a more realistic and black perspective and got into much deeper issues possibly because the director, Lee Daniels is not only black but willing to depart from many shallow assumptions. (Yes I know welfare mothers might have seemed inaccurately demonized and of late, Hollywood seems to only give awards to black actors who portray deeply flawed individuals — but other than that (colossal issue) I thought Precious was an amazing film and did show a diverse set of black female characters.) I don’t know if the director of The Blind Side is black or white but my guess is that he did not think certain things through on a very deep level. A lot of whites today still know very little about black people, and this movie was an embarrassing example of white ignorance and stereotyping if not overt racism. It may have meant well, but failed in several areas.
For one, it was more about white issues around blackness than about the black football star. OK, that’s a valid topic, but where was any black voice? The football star was not a talkative guy but surely there were other black voices that could have strengthened the story. I felt the white people seemed very patronizing. Based on a true story it could have been a better film. I thought it’s depiction of the football player’s biological mother and environment was superficial, cartoon-ish and inadvertently racist due to ignorance on the part of the filmmakers. I realize crack, gangbanging and overwhelmed parents exist in the black community (and in every other community too) but this film had an almost Disney-movie-like, coffee-commercial-director-type portrayal. I don’t mean to be nasty: I think it was an interesting story and they tried to do a good job telling it as close to the real life characters as they could but somehow it all rang false.
It reminded me of some of the white reporters recently talking about Haiti’s “poverty” while mentioning nothing about the dirty dealing policies of the colonial powers and the US with regards to Haiti for centuries. (France extracted debts from an enslaved people who’d had the courage to rebel and create their own nation, a nearly impossible feat; instead of paying reparations for millions of hours of free labor, France forced Haitians to pay more debts! This crippled the nation from the beginning and don’t get me started on things done by the US.) The Blind Side, like some of these mainstream reporters, remained blind too to the story behind this football player’s biological mother, the factors that went into the deterioration of the hood she lived in, and the historic legacy of racism. OK, that’s a lot to ask from a single film about someone taken into someone’s home because he was homeless, but the movie could have at least hinted at it in some way or at the very least questioned some of the patronizing attitudes of otherwise “well-meaning” whites. That someone took him in when he was homeless was a good thing. I have known many black people who have taken homeless whites in, including myself when I was extremely ill, and done many other charitable things for whites. I think these are stories worth telling, whether the charitable person is white or black; I just think that this film stayed a little too much on the surface, like most Hollywood movies in America, because whites, whether we admit it or not, are deathly afraid to look at ourselves, our legacy of racism and present day benefits, and somehow want to see ourselves nothing but innocent do-gooders. We’ve done some good, but we’ve also done some really horrific things that none of us want to look at. This is our blind side, and this is what the movie could have really been about. But it wasn’t.

The point. You’re missing it. The author is not arguing that this beautiful story should not be told. She’s pointing out that it’s been told poorly. Michael was done a disservice (and so was his adoptive family) when his story all of the sudden became a white people saving the gentle magical black giant story. It not only missed the point; it soared passed it while giving it the middle finger.
