Ok…so were these people denied entry because they were black, or because they were fat? I hope the club owner pays if he’s a racist. If he didn’t let them in because they were fat, walking bags of lard, I could understand that. There are building codes and things to consider when the fat girls come along…

Now, I’ve got a serious question. If this woman was going to have a function…why not rent the club out beforehand? Most clubs states plainly that they’ll deny entry to folks based on the way they’re dressed. Also…how is this frivolous amount chosen? One billion dollars? Seriously? Because a club owner didn’t let your friends in? It’s stated in the story right off, that this is some trendy spot, known for denying entry to patrons that don’t meet the dress code, and keeping long ass lines of people at the door. Real talk, how is she basing their denial on race? If she got in, and was walking around in circles crying, then apparently they let Black people in. She’s making defamatory statements, based on her assumptions…which means she has no foundation. If there were White people in the line as well, or if there were other Black people inside the club besides her…how is the club being racist, exactly? Sounds like she’s just playing the race card…sad to say, but that’s what it sounds like. Well, that, and the fact that she probably wants to get publicity for her book.

There’s nothing new about night clubs not letting Black people or people that don’t meet the “dress” code, into their ritzi establishments. That’s been going on for ages. A lot of clubs require that you look “hollywood” to enter. They do that to everyone. And have a right to, even though it’s wrong. But a night club is not a public place, like a library, or a park. They can keep you out.
My issue is, why do Black folks with money, (and some without), feel the need to take their business to these bouji, chi chi night clubs that have always been at issue with Black patrons anyways? Why bring over 100 of your friends and family to a pompous club, where they might not fit in? I think she was trying to be a little uppity if you ask me. And then wants to sue for a billion dollars over racism. We really need to save that word for when it is absolutely necessary.
And like somebody else said, she could have rented out the club or a house like most celebs do when they want to invite their peoples. She should know better.

I’m in Cali and haven’t been to NYC so i don’t know what the clubs are like. But typically a cluib is a club. If you don’t meet the dress code than you are not going to get in. And if you are obese and ugly than you are REALLY going to have a hard time. Not my rules but the rules of the game…it’s apparent that they didn’t have the club rented out or even heir own section because if they DID, and she was hosting a private party…than her guest would have gone to her section w/out the hassle. Since renting out a section or the club in it’s entirity is costly…

The book is about some woman name Gena who supposedly has 20 million, and everybody from the cops and their mama is trying to get their hands on it. Now I ask you with a story line like this is Ms. Woods also trying to get her hands on some SOHO money LOL.

It’s really just like that in some places, here too – I even blogged about it a long while back – those who don’t just blatantly not let ppl in w/no explanation of why the whites are bypassing them and getting in w/no problem. They don’t let you in, they don’t feel they even need to address you and big surprise no one cares and the fools who weren’t there get to defending the action – very typical. But some places are more subtle – they discriminate based on clothes – they have signs denying typical urban wear – so what they do is just let the white ppl in who are dressed the same but point to the sign when black ppl get 2 the door. It’s even more poignant that her white guests got in w/no problem – smh @ppl grasping 4 any straw that shows it wasn’t racism when it probably was but even if not it was still ignorant as all hell.

Well the party goers should be glad they were saved the trouble if she was going to read her latest. Really I think the first two books were written by someone else based on the difference in writing in the third book. It was a huge disappointment. Can I get a refund? If the establishment has a dress code, it should have been made known to the people she invited by her. well being a promoter and event planner there is a certain dress criteria that all guest must meet regardless of relationship with the other guest or clients attending the function unless otherwise notified by club management or owners. “We reserve the right to be selective” is usually the policy of most nightclubs especially upscale nyc nightclubs to help avoid situation as the one we’re discussing right now. Any author or anyone who is in the business of entertainment should know that not everyone gets in the club. Not to mention by definition “a club” is not everyone gets in,”a club is an association of two or more people united by a common interest or goal”. So apparently they did not meet this criteria. If you truly wanted an event that you have finally say and dictation over who the guest can be, it wouldve been wiser to just rent a club out and make it a private event as to avoid any qualms about dresscode…

As a few people have said, these clubs have a responsibility to make money, and keep their regular clientele happy. Who really want’s to go out, and get photographed surrounded by hordes of 300lb. women in tube dresses? Its just about making people aware and putting it out there in the spot light so that something like this wont continue to happen. The lawsuit can be validated depending on if the club is considered private and have standing memberships or if they are open to the public and depending on if they turn people around on a daily basis. All I can say is “Try and prove it”. It is a “private” club and I think he can deny people based on whatever he likes. This happens all the time in the popular “gotta get in to be cool” clubs of New York and L.A.
If you don’t look right to the doorman (“thug in a suit”) then you don’t get in.

But if she legally contracted with the club for a “private” party and the contract included a list of attendees and their guest(s), she has a case. But if she left the guest list as a “whoever shows up at da door” kind of thing, she could have a problem proving racism. I know this establishment and am suprised she chose it in the first place.

I applaud you for telling people to know the law & all…but Black people have had the right to vote since the 15th Amendment was passed in 1870. It guarantees all citizens the right to vote, “no matter what race, color, or condition of previous servitude”. In ’64, the Voting Rights Act was passed to combat Jim Crow laws, that Whites were using to prohibit Blacks in the South from voting. It let them send out federal registrars to get people registered, because local gov’t refused to. The 19th Amendment has to do with women being afforded the right to vote, because the law initially said “21 or older, and male”. Our voting rights aren’t being taken away, because they’re protected by the Constitution…that myth stating otherwise has already been disproven.

Now that I got that off my chest this is a club that has a dress code and a reputation to up hold so if your guest were dressed like the average nigga and were fat then the job of the doorman was to turn them away. Her guest list can never over power the by laws of the club. She had an contract with the owner to have her party there which he did allow her to have knowing that the author was black but they decided to draw the line right through the apperance of her guest because apparently not everyone is suing that came to the party so in essence the club did let in some black guest. She is out of her mind to think that they will even get a quarter of that money. I am in no way condoning racism in any way but I can really and truely say that she made a mistake in suing.What she should have done was go public with the fact that she felt this club had discriminated against her and urged people to stop going to the club. Now this looks like a publicity stunt to raise more awareness of her new book and to get a nice chunk of change if the book doesn’t do well.

Good comment. I love the part where blacks should be told to not having too many children. That should definitely be signed into law. Too many of them running around now without knowing who their father is. Blacks have an illegitimacy rate up there around 70%.
