From the NY Daily News:

Chris Rock is having a bad “Hair” day.

A Los Angeles woman is suing the Brooklyn-bred comic for $5 million, claiming Rock stole her concept for his upcoming documentary, “Good Hair,” reports RadarOnline.com.

Opening Friday, “Good Hair” features such celebrities as rappers Ice-T and Eve, actress Kerry Washington and the Rev. Al Sharpton talking about African-American hairstyles.

In the suit, filed this week in L.A., Regina Kimball stated that she showed her 2005 documentary, “My Nappy Roots: A Journey Through Black Hair-itage,” to Rock on the set of his “Everyone Hates Chris” sitcom two years ago.

Good luck to her on that BOGUS lawsuit because I doubt she will get a penny. The term “good hair” was coined by African Americans decades and decades ago (perhaps even CENTURIES) to reference those who had “fine” textured hair (similiar to Caucasians). This term has/is used on the regular by MANY in the African American community. Though I don’t like the term “good hair” (it only separates/segregates us more)it is a commonly used phrase and one that is IMPOSSIBLE to take credit for. She will have to sue damn near an entire race of people (LOL)! Whatever!

She’s not suing for the name, she’s suing for the idea of the movie.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shamel_/ Shamel_

…but the “idea” of the film is a BIOGRAPHY!!! So therefore it is in relation to the term “good hair”!!! This is not a movie.

    Correction: doc**entary

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/hunnibunnz/ hunnibunnz

A docu.mentary is a film, a film is a movie. And the idea is allegedly stolen from a movie this other lady made. Did you read and comprehend the article? That’s all I’m saying…

@Shamel_ did you even throughly read the article? She is not suing for the name of the film or the right to use the term “good hair”. She suing because the idea or subject of his film was allegedly stolen from her. It quite possibly goes above and beyond what was said in the article, he may have stolen her method of presentation or something even more. This is similar to the situation where J.K. Rowling the author of Harry Potter series was sued for stealing the idea behind that series.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shamel_/ Shamel_

I have read and comprehended the article and what I am saying is that this woman doesn’t have a leg to stand on!!! Sit back, watch and see how far this goes!!! That is all I am going to say on that. She has NO VALIDITY to her claims whatsoever. If she gets her 5 million ya’ll come back and holla at me!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shamel_/ Shamel_

LaideeCaramel I know what you are referring to with Harry Potter and those are two separate entities because this is a DOC**ENTARY and that was a fictitious writing. Unless, Chris interviewed the same people she did and journaled the same information there is NO TRADEMARK for a doc**entary is the gist of what I am saying. Perhaps I didn’t properly word what I meant but the bottom line is she will see no money. Enough said on that!

Like someone else here said, a doc**entary and a film are two different things. Besides, Good and Bad hair are concepts our entire race has debated and poked fun at for hundreds of years, so it’s hardly her original idea in the first place. That would be like me saying that GE took the light bulb from my high school science project. Chris Rock 1-Regina Kimball 0

Liadee Caramel & Hunnibunnz thanks for being open minded women, we need more like you. But nobody ever made a movie or doc**entary with her presentation. If “My Nappy Roots” and “Good Hair” are alike, If Miss Kimball had her work copyrighted, and can prove Chris Rock saw her work. Then his rich azz have to come off that money.

    I didnt see the film….

did Chris Rock touch on anything about NATURAL HAIR ???

cant say one glass is dirty without showing a CLEAN GLASS you feel me….

ps- Wachowski brothers STOLE the ‘Matrix’ series from Sofia Stewart. Terminator, was also her idea.

I saw that doc**entary and thats the first thing i thought about when hearing about Chris Rock’s new movie ,I will have to see the movie to tell if they share similiarities, the concept seems the same.

    Is this lady C R A Z Y? lmao…I better sue too

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ASLgeek/ ASLgeek

I would think I have to agree that she doesn’t have any merit for this lawsuit. Even if she can prove that he indeed saw her film before and used the concept. The idea of plagiarism is not that we steal someone’s concept but that we have stolen their entire idea word for word. For instance if I wanted to remake a Prince song I would need his permission because naturally I would probably sing the song word for word.

Many people have a concept of making a movie about some ax wielding serial killer who never dies and they coined it into Chucky, Jason and Michael Myers which made the horror genre. The originator can’t sue these guys cause they had the same concept. Or even for a more realistic example Trade Your Spouse couldn’t sue Wife Swap. Though they are the same concept they have different ideas to a point.

Yeah…a white man ALSO did a doc**entary entitled ‘Black Hair’. Anaya Bird wrote a book and so have dozens of other sisters. And…?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/U_NV_ME/ U_NV_ME

she shouldn’t get not one copper penny. that concept idea or what ever you want to call it isn’t hers. She was not and is not the first person to have that concept. Its a free for all. She wasn’t the first and won’t be the last to make a doc**entary about good hair and bad hair. Why did she even bother? She must have really wanted some money and if she gets it she should have to share it with everyone who made a doc**entary about good hair before her. No matter if she did show him her doc**entary, yea it could’ve inspired him but its not HER concept at all.
