Common

ATLANTA, Georgia – Rims and bling? They’re “super-played out,” Common said, explaining that hip-hop is finding another direction and President Obama is helping point the way.

Common spoke of the “Obama effect” before a recent performance in Atlanta during the Hennessy Artistry Series.

The Chicago, Illinois-born rapper/actor, who has appeared in the movies “Wanted” and “American Gangster,” spoke on a variety of topics, including the virtues of playing with live bands such as The Roots, who are co-hosting the series with him.

However, he skirted questions about recent outbursts by rapper Kanye West and tennis star Serena Williams. West is a friend and fellow Chicago rapper who has produced two of Common’s albums, and Williams is reportedly dating Common.

“People that I care about, that I consider being friends of mine, most of the things I discuss with them I wouldn’t discuss in public because it’s a real relationship,” he said. “It’s not a relationship for the public, you know?”

He did, however, spend a few minutes providing a progress report on Obama’s influence on hip-hop. Nine months ago, Common told CNN he believed Obama’s presidency would change the attitudes of many hip-hop artists.

“I think hip-hop artists will have no choice but to talk about different things and more positive things, and try to bring a brighter side to that because, even before Barack, I think people had been tired of hearing the same thing,” he said in December.

On Saturday, Common said he is already seeing signs that Obama is making a mark on a musical genre often vilified because of its focus on drugs, violence and the degradation of women.

Rap should of been cleaned up before President Obama was elected. One man doesn’t affect how 300 million people in this country think. Rap needs more balance and the major labels don’t wanna do that. They just wanna exploit and make as much money off of Hip-Hop as they can.

I think low record sales are probably a better reason for this…I think people are searching for new formulas right now…

It will never happen. The comglomerates won’t allow our people to elevate to a conscious mindstate. We as listeners are also guilty,me included for bobbing to that brain slavery. Im breaking the chains though.

Sheesh. Recording companies have proven they want to make money and don’t care how they make money. If a rap moves in a positive direction and it sells, they’ll produce it. Make no mistake.

And why wouldn’t any company want blacks to have a positive image of themselves? That’s what sells products. Gearing those products and advertising to an image people want to be seen as or to become. And for that matter, it makes no business sense that blacks would be seen as positive because that increases their earning, ie spending, potential.

You need to understand the mentality. They don’t care what the image is, as long as it sells. They’ve proven that.

So, the only people who want blacks to have a poor self image, are politicians. It’s the ideal political strategy to have people believe they’re powerless, oppressed and hopeless.

But that’s just good for business. The politicians tell you there is no hope for you without them, and you are thus are drawn to the positive images of the advertiser because they make you feel self empowered.

    LOL

Rap has been played out for over 10 years now. Bling, booty, and buffoonery has had a grip on the music for far too long. I seriously doubt that our President had anything to do with the change in Hip Slop. It’s all about record sales, and smut isn’t selling like it used to. It started before President Obama was elected. It’s wonderful that our president is serving as such a positive role model, but in the end, he’s only a drop in the bucket. We have had African-American mayors, senators, and governors. None of that ever had an effect on Hip Slop. I’m from Chicago’s South Side, and Common is one of the best MC’s to ever live, but I have to disagree with him on this one.

    XL_611 has a good point !

no drugs n criminals = no prisons making money, no court system making money, no police making money etc etc………

you cant get over on people who KNOW whats going on and aint dumbed down and distracted…….

the same change that happened from the 60s to 70s and early 80s from consciousness back to BS……..happened in OUR lifetimes with hiphop from early 80s to mid 90s….then turned into corny azz hip-pop……..

most of us listen to rappers more than we listen to the damn news… so if rappers was talken some real s**t that was about uplifting… that would be considered ‘dangerous’ to those who wanna keep people ig’nant and oppressed

I would love to tell Common this, “Don’t believe the hype, bro.” Plus, I believe the low record sales have a lot to do with it than President Obama.

First we need to stop blaming everything on the record labels a large number of these so called artist have their own label. I agree with Irregular_Joe we as black people hold each other back. Start looking at the person in the mirror. I don’t worry about a white man robbing and killing me it’s the black man I have to be cautious of. Rap has been really bad for about 10 to 15 years. You don’t hear or see music videos of half naked girls and people constantly talking about killing, drugs and degrading women like rap.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

Soular, tell that to WVON chicago next week when I send them a proposal for a project that will provide opportunities for teens mixing up art, science, electronics and business…….

what? so now cuz weve got a new inc**bent all of a sudden theres a rainbow over the hood now? bulls**t the projects r still a warzone brothas and sistas r still goin to war in their own neighborhoods, livin every hour of the damn day hustlin and tryin (in vain) to stay out the pen.I hope,i mean i really HOPE that future MCs dont fall silent on what were dealin with on the daily and continue to tell our stories (like Nas,Raekwon,Ghostface,Scarface etc).

In the real world just thinkin happy thoughts and wearin bright clothes dont fix s**t,life may be all positive for muthaf**kas with million dollar record deals and blockbuster movie roles but the roots of this hip hop thing havent changed. Its still ruff out here and sooner or later niggaz(and i mean that) are gonna grow tired of pop artists profiting off their plight and that so called “gangsta rap” the suburbs love to hate will be back in full effect.

    Hallelujah

All I have to say is yeah our president is and he’s trying to make a change. But how is he going to make a change on something that has been going on for years? The new world order? People think things are going to get better. Its only going to get worst.its already written. The government has a plan and our black president is just something to by time.to make people black people happy.I didn’t even vote last year. For what? Black people, yes some black people make it bad for others. Killing, rape, drugs calling each other nigga all that stuff add up.to much hate in the world. When some dumb azz people open up there eyes and see what’s really going on they are going to be shocked.its sad. Check my page out go to my bulletin.
