It was the type of homegoing only Harlem could give him.

Hundreds thronged the sidewalk outside the Apollo theater, in a raucous celebration of the musical prodigy that was Michael Jackson.

Hanging above them in the famed theater’s platinum marquee were the surreal words: “In memory of Michael Jackson. A true Apollo legend. 1958-2009”

VIDEO: HARLEM SAYS GOODBYE TO THE KING OF POP

Fans shocked at the pop king’s sudden passing sought solace in each other. Strangers drew together and for a few hours on 125th street bonded like family members at an overdue reunion.

Check out our gallery of photos from Michael’s memorial service:

Some turned their cars into makeshift DJ booths blasting hits like “Man in the Mirror” and “Billie Jean,” some cried,  some sipped beer, some hawked t-shirts, some burned candles, but most just sang their souls out, and of course rocked the night away.

“I came out here to explode,” said Denine Rodney, 37, a market researcher from Harlem who came to late night fete with her sister. “I came to get my Michael Jackson on!” she said.

One mourner built a makeshift shrine with candles and pictures of the gloved one outside High Rollers Jewelry store. She donned a black felt fedora and moonwalked for anxious TV crews that lined 125th street.

Between moonwalks she sang and fought through fits of tears. For many like her, the loss was personal.

“I was sitting at home hurt, in pain,” said Denine’s sister, Lisa Rodney, 32.  “It threw me for a loop. He’s part of everyone’s childhood,” she said.

For the generation Xers and Yers  who grew up on Jackson’s music his passing drew pause. It was a moment, not unlike what the assassination of President John F. Kennedy might signify to some, or what the date December 7, 1941, might mean for others.

Renny John, 31, an insurance adjuster,  will always remember what he was doing when he heard the news yesterday evening. He was holding his one-year-old son.

Yonel Severe, 40, was in the Bronx when somebody broke the news to him around 6 p.m. yesterday. “Which Michael?” Severe, an artist had asked in disbelief,  “Our Michael?”

Jackson’s stardom reached Severe as a 13-year-old growing up in Haiti in the early 1980s.

He remembers asking his dad to buy him the iconic blood-red jacket the pop king sported in his   “Thriller” music video.

His father’s prompt response to the request was, “I don’t want you to die, it’s too hot,” explaining it wouldn’t be suitable to wear the leather jacket in Haiti’s soaring temperatures.

“Michael describes an era, a generation,” Severe said looking at the exultant crowd that partied under the  vigilant watch of NYPD officers posted along 125th street and a helicopter that circled above.

“If it weren’t for the police, people would be here for days and days,” Severe said, “We lost our best.”

As he surrendered to the music and the jubilation around him he shouted “He’s not dead! He lives in us!”

And in the height of the outpouring that lasted into the wee morning hours on 125th street,  it certainly seemed true.

    I’m mourning….but I’m EXTREMELY pissed off…

The american media DESTROYED this man. They completely assasinated his character…and for WHAT? They destroyed a man who never did anything but break his back to make everybody around the world happy. He was ALWAYS smiling, and he was always surrounded by a bunch of bulls**t…and for NO reason…

I’m so upset by this I can’t even get my thoughts straight…

All the media in this country ever did was try to demonize this man…trying to paint a false picture of a damn hild molestor…trying to paint a false picture of a weirdo who doesn’t even deserve to be around his own children…

He tried to get away from the bulls**t the media was doing to him by leaving this pathetic, SORRY ASS COUNTRY, but they FOLLOWED him to try and soil him name overseas. America DESTROYED a man who was probably the ONLY real TRUE role model our youth really had. But they PRAISE clowns like Wayne, and 50 Cent, and Jay Z…these CORNBALLS who have lengthy rap sheets and represent everything F**KED UP about society for ALL races. They see a man who never did a damn thing to ANYBODY and they go out of their way to destroy this man.

He was broken down to ONLY having his children to fall back on. That’s not a bad thing, but NO MAN should have to live the life with NO friends, no TRUE family support, and just NO ONE around in your real times of need. I know how that feels more than you will ever know.

I don’t care what the autopsy says…Mike didn’t die of drugs, cardiac arrest, or ANYTHING…Mike died of a broken heart. I know how he felt. There’s no cure for that. You are basically the walking dead…cardiac arrest just put him out of his misery.

In essence, cardiac arrest was probably the only truly merciful thing in his life. I feel such a huge lump of sorrow for this man because I know how his heart felt. To have your friends turn their backs on you…ON CAMERA…in your times of need…your family members s**t on you, people only coming around you when they need something, and even NOW…the media is trying to drag his name down and even putting out there something about the kids not being his….WHY??

I wish i could say Rest in Peace…but my heart will never believe that he ever can after what America did to him…

man i wished i was in Harlem last night, they CELEBRATED his life && it started from a simple boom box. and then he showed america we can get together without acting ignorant. screw the media, because their not gon raise their kids, or pay any of MJ’s bills, lets concentrate on celebrating his life as big as harlem did.

I walk alone 247,you are right.and what you say is the truth. They know it,the world knows it.But the many people he touched around this world doesnt lie.The truth is in the numbers.Who cares what the media says.Trust me,they know the truth. But the world wont let people with that kind of hatred in thier heart get away with lieing on his name anymore.

I did a tribute to Michael on my BP page. The one thing that struck me as I was putting it together is how sweet he was as a child. Cute little brown cherub face with the voice of an angel.

Black people have always loved Michael unconditionally, I wish he could have embraced his own blackness with the same conviction. Nevertheless, that doesn’t take anything away from who he was as a man, a father, an artist and an icon.

Rest in peace Michael, we’ll miss your sweet voice! Now you’re singing in God’s choir with Luther, Mini Ripperton, Phyllis Hyman, harmonizing, Biggie and Tupak rapping in the background, while Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis play their instruments. What could be more glorious!

I love Michael Jackson, always have and always will. He left his music for us to remember him by and that will always live on until the end of time. As a result of all the mean things that were said about him and the lies that circulated around about him for so long who is to say this isn’t his blessing. He’s free at last from everything negative that surrounded his circle. Including the result of one too many cosmetic procedures! WE love you Mike!

    I have loved Mr. Michael
    Jackson from the very
    beginning when I heard that
sung that song Got To Be There
I was so happy to hear his
voice I was sitting in my
    room playing with paper dolls
when I heard his voice I knew
he was going to be a Great
Big Star. I had a crush on
him. As he grew up I always
listen to him I would only
look at him. I loved the
other brothers to but I always
kept my eyes solely on Michael
    I remember Heart Break Hotel,
    Lovely One, Never Can Say
Good Bye, That’s The For You,
When I went off on his own
I never thought he would have
it so Damn big I knew what
ever he sang I would love it
On the Off The Wall Album
my favorites were On The Floor
    Working Day And Night, Girl
    Friend, Can’t Help. It’s The
    Falling In Love. Don’t Stop
Til You Get Enough, That song
Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough
I was just watching some of
    his videos just other day
my mind went back just seeing
him dance on that song Don’t
Stop just blew my mind I just
    playing it. I didn’t know
that our baby, our hero, our
legend had left us and, flew
    away from this planet. My
hear just broke. I loved the
way he would say He he no one
could say that like him, no
one could dance like him, and,
no one could sing like him.
    So many entertainers that came
    after him were influenced
by his style, his voice like
me I was deeply influenced by
I was hit by a smooth crminal
and, that lean once again no
could do it like him or better
than him. Michael had so much
passion so much dept in his
    voice. The way healed the
world with his social awareness for all people, the
    he always cared and, shared
    his love with children,
especially with his dedication and, healing through is love for life, peace, and, happiness he spread all over the world, I never could afford to go to
one of his concerts but,to see
him on stage on my T.V. in
my living was just as close
to Michael Jackson as I can
get. He was such a humble,
shy, Sweet, kindhearted, police, sincere and yes sexy.
All that came across in his
music. I always said he is
    indeed the true originator of
    his musical talented family.
My heart broke got a chance to shake his hand, like the
kids had a chance but, my heart and, mind and, my life will be the same I have with
    me a piece of a legend, a
    champion, a warrior, and one
    of if not the greatest
    entertainers of ALL Time.
I wish I could have been out
with him just to stand on
stage with he is one of those
    entertainers I always dreamed
    about performing with. I love
him so much so very much. I
    The will remember that,
    Remember The Time also means
    remember Michael as one of
    the greatest legends of all
    time. Love Patricia Jaye.
