Legendary R&B singer Gladys Knight had some harsh words for the genre of Hip-Hop in a recent interview.

Knight is making the press rounds promoting her role as church elder named “Wilma” in Tyler Perry’s latest movie I Can Do Bad All By Myself, while she prepares for an October tour of Europe.

In addition to the high profile role in Perry’s latest hit movie, Knight is revered around the world for hits like “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Neither One Of Us” and “Heard It Through The Grapevine.”

During an interview with BlackNews.com, Knight said that Hip-Hop had created opportunities for young artists, but the slammed the genre of music, claiming it had set back African-Americans as a race.

“It’s been bad, in my opinion, as far as the quality of the music and the stories that they tell. It’s one thing to be raw about your history, but they took it to another level and it became vulgar,” Knight said.

she right and she iz beautiful, she was there b 4 during and the present of hip hop, and she haz her opinion on the matter, she iz a real diva, not like the new R&B singers, she was there wen black people in this country was called n****r to our faces and signs put up on restaurants and business that no n****rs allowed and n****r use the back door, she was there when the word n****r was used by white people, and to me nut in change, the white race call us n****rs so much the we adopted into our own language, so i know where she is coming from..
love some hip hop but not all..

i was just saying that too my kids a months ago. All that is talked about is sex and self set us way the f*ck back

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sirromancerx/ sirromancerx

She’s absolutely 100% correct. Early hip hop had a message, that message eventually became lost and hip hop became all about the boastful individual, sex, drinking malt liquer, rolling weed, drugs, violence, murder, and other straight up foolishness. Now millions of youth, black and otherwise try to emulate that garbage and its just trifling. It’s an embrassment. As black people we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. I used to love rap, but it’s not the same and it’s creatively in the toilet now. I’m tired of every kid who can rhyme thinking he can be a rapper, why not a brain surgeon instead, a scientist, or lawyer? I would like to see good music comeback , not this nonsense about killing. We need songs about real love again. We need real role models again like Martin Luther King, not Lil’ Wayne, and if the role model doesn’t exist then look into yourself and to God.

i cant even be mad ms knight….she absolutely correct!in the 80′s hiphop had a message..they were telling a story about everything that was going on in the hood, what the government was doing to our neighborhoods…and what have you….even through the 90s a little…things began to take turns for the worst in the 90s..but it still had a message…now….there is no creativity..which is fine by the government because now our ears and minds are being filled with non sense…there are no more chuck d’s krs 1′s or 2pacs around..to be like aye..this is going on and thats going on in the black communities…so now all we hear is..” i surf i lean i sway” or whatever the hell hes saying…but my point is its all about making money..i mean s**t…if i wanted to be rapper..i dont need sit down and write down my best lyrics.. i can up with a song..call it the “shovel” and come up with a dance..and then…there is my record deal right there..Up until recently i was on the lil wayne kick…but..this guy…he is no one that i would allow my child to listen to…there is something seriously peturbing about him and his character…anyobody that can sit down in interview and say they will kill someones family newborn and kids…has the devil in them..WHAT HAPPENED TO ROLE MODELS?! WHO BESIDES FAMILY AND GOD, ARE OUT CHILDREN SUPPOSE TO LOOK UP TO IN THE INDUSTRY?? even hollywood is going mad!! I mean remember when we were kids, and we were in school or where ever and we would be like…man i wish i could be like this person or that person, or i wish i could sing like them or rap like that…i sure as heck remember thinking like that…now i look and im like…turn off the tv…please turn off the radio…i havent bought a new cd since kanye west came out with graduation..that was the last cd i bought..and i dont know where that is!!!Just like i thought drake was hot…BOP! ANYONE DEFINES SUCCESS AS HAVING MONEY, CARS, CLOTHES, AND GIRLS, OR BOYS…. ARE NOT COOL! That is complete and UTTER FOOLISHNESS!! ALL THAT B.S CAN BE TAKEN AT A MOMENT NOTICE! then what do u have…back struggling to find ur next meal…doing some lame ass reality show like khia did..SO YES…hiphop makes the hiphop culture and the FOLLOWERS of hiphop look EXTREAMLY FOOLISH!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DMY19151/ DMY19151

MAN…SHE NEEDS TO TAKE IT DOWN A 1000 WITH THAT SAD ASS SUICIDE MUSIC THAT SHE WAS MAKING….DAMN…YOU HAVE YOUR RIGHT TO YOUR OWN OPINION…THE MOVIES IN THE THEATRES ARE WORSER THAN MUSIC…IT’S A LOT OF REASONS WHY THE MUSIC NOW IS DIFFERENT THAN BACK IN THE DAY..YOU STILL HAVE REVOLUTION RAP ARTIST OUT HERE….TALK ABOUT THE MEDIA WHO ONLY SHOWS THE CRAZY S**T ON THE TV’S AND PLAY IT ON THE RADIO…IT’S WAY DEEPER THAN WHAT KNIGHT IS SAYING…SOUNDING LIKE BILL COSBY AND DELORES TUCKER…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Sub-Negro/ Sub-Negro

It was a niche in the 80′s and it simply appealed to blacks. Then when the 90′s came in and white execs saw the potential to be made so they did what they had to do to make dat money.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/trisha_369/ trisha_369

I agree with your comment sirromancerx & its not just lil’wayne either its alot of rapper who claim the fame but, don’t walk the talk. Im not as much into rap like I used to be…its just not the same-even thou its still good rappers out here. We just dont hear them as much. So with that being said,im not mad at Gladys Knight for her own opinion-after all she was part of the open-ing path way to music period.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

damn…did that dude really type “worser??” Miss Knight is correct to a degree, but the same could be said about all forms of popular music…Art imitates life. Music is the soundtrack to everyday life..our popular culture (movies, TV and music) is a reflection of how people are living…to be honest, the earliest stages of hip hop was about bragging, and had no real message, this is why “The Message” was so revolutionary..it was really the first song of its kind at the time!! only. After that, you started to find messages being added to many hip hop records…now we are full circle..back to where it started, except now, talking about killing people, dealing drugs and serving jail sentences are the topics being talked about in abundance!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Arrielle2007/ Arrielle2007

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/slice_8706/ slice_8706

I understand what she’s saying but i dont understand why BLACK men and Women have to be and act a ceratin way just because some feel it makes us look bad in the eyes of other races, whites to be more specific…When are we going to loose that metality of trying to impress or be accepted. The one thing you cant deny about HIP-HOP its honest. Most old skool R&B songs didnt have much meaning but we remember all the great ones because they did. The same will be true about Hip-Hop when some other form of music takes its place. So lets not critize the youth like her parents before her when Jazz and R&B was called devil music, when gospel was the music of choice for the Older adults in her youth..

Yeah, because all hip-hop is exactly alike. I’m sure Lupe Fiasco, Common, Mos Def, and Talib would all agree. In fact, there’s not even a difference between hip hop and rap. Damn all those violent hip-hop stars with all of their degrading lyrics. *end sarcasm* Give me a break, Gladys…

I realize most young people would not agree with Ms. Knight mainly because you have not been around long enough. I have been a fan of rap since it started and I also agree with Ms. Gladys Knight, for the last 15 plus years rap music has been on a steady decline. In my opinion about 90% of it is crap rap. I see rap music as a drug that is being distributed and is destroying the black community. Rappers glamorize selling drugs, mistreatment of women, materialism, being thugs and not being educated. They repeat a style that is selling without trying to be innovative. The lyrical content is horrible and the songs primarily focus on beats and a hook. No one is saying that rap is the devils music it is just terrible today, and has been for quite some time. I think both R&B and Rap lack creativity, originality and talent. I also think sports not rap are why we have so many black millionaires. Also we are not back to where rap started.

@slice_8706 The best music created is from the 60’s to the 90’s. All the famous white artist like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Elvis stole or copied the Black Artist’s style. I have never heard of R&B and Jazz being called the devils music, you must have them confused with Rock and Roll and those statements where made by mostly very conservative white people. The music that is made today is not even in the same category with old school classics.

We can talk all day about the roll of hip hop in the black community, it’s an debatable topic. One of the main reason I even log on to my bp is to see all of the opinions from my fellow beautiful and intelligent people (YOU ALL, LOL). I love hip hop for the sense of expression and for the oppurtunities that it has created for us. Hip Hop has given us a voice in the world, but like any other form of media it has it’s pros and cons. Some pros are that it allows you to feel what an artist is feeling; we all love a good story it’s in our nature as humans to be curious about things that we find fascinating. This music has saved lives because even though some of those rappers embellish their past, there are some that really experienced some of those things that are talked about in these songs. Imagine if DMX never got signed, I wouldn’t want to see him in a dark alley, lol. Now I feel a lot of you on the cons. In some cases hip hop has been used to exploit both men and women, created stereotypes and have given us a false sense of identity among the youth. Coming up my Mom made sure that I understood that ALL music was just music, entertainment. I said that to say this, as individuals we must make personal choices what relates to us personally. For example, I for one have never killed anyone so I don’t relate that but I can still listen to it because it is just entertainment. If we all went to see a horror film, would we all want to be killers? No because we are all capable enough to understand that it is just a movie. I think we should just give ourselves a little credit for our intelligence. We are much smarter than that. One. Oh yea cop that Blueprint 3 s**t’s hot. IT’S THE ROC!!!

I agree with Ms Knight, but alot of you are saying Rap isnt what it used to be. Its been on a decline. HELOOOOO, RAP HAS ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THAT, IT’S ALWAYS (well most of it) been about drugs, violence and sex anyway!!! what are u guys talking about?? i just feel like instead of rap taking a more positive turn it’s either been the same or grown worse.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

Well Ms. Knight. You were at least for a time, the “Queen Of Soul”, or one of them.

It’s funny how at the very time there seemed to be no limit to the creativity and talent that emerged from the black community, rap began to emerge as well.

At the very time that any notion the black man had lost his mind and soul, wasn’t even a notion, rap began to emerge.

And here we are. The unthinkable and un-imagineable, has manifest.

No talent, no music, no skills, no love, no soul.

The Kings and Queens of Soul, turned a blind eye to their culture. Or were as taken aback as everyone else and were swept away by the holocaustic winds of a cultural Katrina.

Young people don’t understand the wisdom of age…growing up as Generation Xers, we’ve seen rap go from message-conscious mediums for black uplift to the negative imagery of today’s Southern-inspired rap (that is, we’ve seen rap go from a true art form to a method of making money while playing off the worst of stereotypes). Young people have only known this crap of today, so they really have no frame of reference. Today’s crop of so-called rappers could never produce a Paris, an X-Clan, an Intelligent Hoodlum, a Sista Soljah. Today’s so-called rappers could never put their egos aside and make a “Self-Destruction,” “We’re All In The Same Gang,” of “Close The Crackhouse” featuring multiple artist pooling their talents to tell the black community to stop acting ignorant. Young people have no clue and the black community is in denial of such issues in our community!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/raydust1/ raydust1

With all due restpect to Miss Knight, cause I grew up on her music but this is a tired topic and I don’t put much stock in her opinion. If you’re gonna criticize hip hop then you have to have grown up with hip hop and know enough about it from the gate at least. I mean if you were to ask Gladys what Rakim song was her favorite what do you think she’d say…’who?’. Or does she ever throw on a Eublic Enemy track when she driving—’fight the power’. lol. I don’t think so. now i’m not saying there shouldn’t be any criticism toward hip hop just put it in context, when Gladys Knight was making all those hits back in the 50′,60′s, 70′s you can bet some well known jazz purist were saying WTF. hip hop has always been brash, insultive, funny, cunning, smart, brilliant, brave, scary, thruthful, violent just to name a few. Every couple years it just changes it’s stripes but it’s still the same beast.

Also the word “Nigga” is being interpreted as an okay word to use. Hollywood has got it fudged up! Everybody has choices in terms of the music they listen too! But I’ve never seen Blues, Jazz, Pop or County & Western hipe a person(s) up to the point(s) they feel the need to act out, perform, be slezy, ignorant, violent, carry a gun, be loud, travel in pack’s and mob’s, not going anywhere just rumping, looking for trouble and/or to make trouble! • http://www.blackplanet.com/KINGDOT77/ KINGDOT77

Hiphop didn’t create what goes on in the streets. It didn’t create drug dealers, murderers, theives, gangstas or none of that sh**. All of that existed before hiphop, exists now, and will continue to exist. The streets created hiphop. So saying that this genre of music set us back just isn’t right. I don’t agree with that. For the parents that are looking for role models for there kids. What’s wrong with you being your childrens role models? These people you are looking for are human, meaning they are not perfect. Your children don’t need a rapper, sports figure, or politician, for that matter, to be their role models. All they need are their parent/s. Its cool for them to look up to someone they want be like but its the parents job to keep their children grounded and headed in the right direction. I’m willing to bet that over half the people here that had a negative comment about the current state of hiphop failed to state that the same meaningless music thats being trashed. Got they a** shaking in the club or head knodding while riding in their car. Even though allot of what is popular today isn’t about love, it still serves some purpose. If hiphop never existed, what would you blame for the way the youth act? You would have to blame something because I feel without rap, it still exists. If you can answer that question then you probably just found the root to what you see is wrong with today’s youth. Ms. Knight, I respect your opinion, love your music but blaming hiphop isn’t even scratching the surface. You don’t like it, don’t listen to it. Just imagine if their was no hiphop. How many more thugs would be on your block? Just my opinion and food for thought.

It’s a classic oversimplification to hold something blameless, just because it didn’t initiate the problem. If you think you won’t go to jail, though you were caught throwing gas on an already burning house, natural selection will not be your friend for much longer.

The REAL problem is that there is an imposter to the throne of Black music, making its rounds in broadcast media and soiling the name of Hip-Hop, which has long since been ousted and exiled from the music scene, only occasionally appearing over hijacked airwaves, broadcasting from undisclosed locations to insist that reports of its demise have been greatly exaggerated, while eluding the assassination attempts of the mainstream media machine (*soon to be bitten by a spoken word performer near you*).

Gladys is only partially correct; the aggregate of *RAP* music is glorifying the destruction of our culture and development, in order for a few rats, who never really tried to succeed w/ their souls intact, to make big cheese by feeding poisoning to the rest of us. It’s no wonder our youth are losing the race and lost in the maze. Testifying (Hip-Hop) and glorifying (the other 99% of rap) are two significantly different concepts.

Modern rap music is literally selling our youth into mental slavery: “Just shackle ‘em and load ‘em on the boat! Keep the males seperated from the females, and don’t let ‘em learn to trust or build with each other. Keep feedin’ ‘em a steady diet of envy and mistrust, then let them destroy themselves when they are of no more use.” Real talk: will we ever wake up?

This is my thing I dis-like when people try to down play rap in general. One thing people have to understand is that, it’s good music and there is music in bad taste.”Freedom of speech allowed a lot of things to be said” out of context. Back doing Gladys Knight time before she was big I know her mother and father didn’t like the new music that they was listening to coming up, so to wrap things up we as adults can turn the stations or boycott the station but if you are just talking about the issue and not doing anything to change it, than please take a seat in the back of the bus.
I still love Ms.Knight but try listing to mos def or krs1 and than give me your opinion.

People don’t understand the origins of rap, or hip hop. At least in terms of how it got to the point it is now.

At first, like many including Gladys have stated, it was a musical venue for expression of the black experience. The racism, poverty, gangsterism, drug dealing, prostitution, etc.. Where motown, disco, r&b, were more idealistic and mainstream. But it had a solid rhythm and melody. It was musical, but the main vocal was rough and cutting.

At any rate, no one would produce or play the stuff so they began to sell their own tapes out of the trunks of their cars at drive ins and street corner drugs stores and the like.

And the deal was, here a pimp or drug dealer could make money, without taking the life of a woman and throwing it in the trash can. She could hoe it up, as a backup singer. He could pimp it up, through the microphone. They could dust it all up, through a drum machine, synth and a turntable. No one got hurt and it was legal tender.

So, then the record companies finally wised up to the smell of money and started contracting artists.

But the up and comers had to hit harder get down to a level that went beyond a bit too rough of a rub to a cut that went to the raw, to make it to the top. That became talent. Instead of musical variety and precision, you got the next best thing to being there in a gang shoot down.

Now, there’s no way to turn the stuff off. Either the players or the people complaining about it’s being too loud.

The only real way to find out who’s who in that hood, is to give them all guns and see who’s the last one standing……..

    LOL

Ithink some things that hip hop artist say can be harsh. The reality is this it sells records and some maybe true and some not but it shows the creativity blacks have.

These record companies own these rap artists, in full. They can kill two birds with one stone, keep those of colors in a perpetual state of ignorance and make money on of them. What’s a better scheme?

as if gladys night has done anything to lift the black race up on her shoulders. rap music and BET are the most mind numbing institutions in black america. the reason why is we use them to describe blackness. stupid music is okay sometimes. look at rock music. the difference is white people dont use it to represent them. it seems as if black people use rap music to.

When it’s all said and done hiphop is going to be here until someone turns the light of on this world. We as blacks are always slandering each other which will never be right in my book. Glady’s can say whatever she wants to say about hiphop, but the new generation like hiphop the same as others liked her music coming up. Oprah,Glady’s Knight, and many others can slander hiphop forever but it ain’t going no where. If you are not going to support it, why do you slander it. Slandering only give it publicity and help it become stronger and never forgotten.
