new-black-barbies

From KTLA.com:

Barbie is getting some new friends. Mattel announced Tuesday that it is launching a line of black dolls with more “authentic facial characteristics” than the company’s dolls have featured until now.

The dolls, which are part of the “So In Style” line have “fuller lips, a wider nose, more distinctive cheek bones and curlier hair,” according to the world’s biggest toymaker.

Mattel said its new “So In Style” line is intended to “celebrate the diversity of African-American Girls and encourage positive themes.”

“So In Style” was developed and inspired by Barbie designer of 12 years, Stacey McBride-Irby, an African-American mother of two who wanted to create a line of dolls more reflective of her daughter and community.”

The line features Grace, Kara and Trichelle, “three best friends who are all about fashion, fun and friendship. Each of the dolls features its own unique personality and style and reflects one of three varying skin tones,” it said.

How many little black girls would want the dark skin Barbie? They have alreay been taught that white is right and black dark skin is ugly. I hope the new Barbie’s have a job or maybe go/gone to school, something encouraging besides the way you look and have fun.You do know Barbie is over 50 years old. LOL!

gren1shaw2 I disagree what you say about little black girls being taught that white is right. I have 3 black daughters and I DONT teach my kids that white is right OR wrong. I teach them that we are all human. I teach them that they are beautiful black girls. My girls have a very diverse family. They have cousins who are hispanic/black, cousins who are white/black (but have blond hair and blue eyes), have cousins who are Korean/black.) The problem with your statement is that is how you perceive things, and as African americans, we have to stop taking the victim role and rise up to be leaders; take responsiblity for our actions, go get what is rightfully ours due to hard work and preseverance, not because of our race, and shoot for the moon. Too many black parents have taught their children what they could not be and stole their dreams by telling them that. BUT Obama squashed all of that when he became President of the USA. How many black parent have told their kids they couldn’t be President because they were’nt white? I’m glad my mother never said anything like that to me.

this is a response of mattel winning the lawsuit over the Bratz franchise…putting them out of business and realizing that little girls love diversity in their dolls…the Bratz line was so successful that mattel couldn’t compete.

Another note. The reason why there haven’t been many black lines of dolls is because of the bottomline….profit. Little black girls won’t make the corporation rich by demanding these products…and white parents wasn’t buying their child a black doll period…just like your favorite show that only a hand full of people watches…it gets cancelled due to lack of profit to sustain…not that these companies haven’t tried desperately in the past…to include an african attired line of dolls which I bought cause I knew it would be discontinued…and no I don’t collect dolls, I have a daughter that I love and she definitely loves ethnic toys…

I AM ALSO GLAD THAT DISNEY CAME OUT WITH A BLACK PRINCESS….MY DAUGHTER CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THIS ON CHRISTMAS…I have been showing her pictures and trailers for the past couple of years telling her that this is a princess that looks like her….alghough Jasmine from Aladdin should have been dark skinned…

I’m sorry but i do not think these dolls are racist come on there are more important things in this world to stress over i know that racism is still alive but there just doll these young black girls need something out there that looks like them i would buy my daughter on it i had children. the bratz dolls werent racist either because if you know any thing about them you would know that the black on and the white one look just alike besides the complexion come on stop over reacting and look at some bigger issues

I do not think that this line of dolls is racists nor ghetto. However i will say that the lighter doll has much better clothes than the darker dolls. It seems as if the company already figured that the darker dolls wouldnt sell, so they did not put the same energy or budget in their clothes that they gave the lighter doll. Look at all the attention that went into the redbone girl, and then look at what the darker dolls are wearing. the darkest doll’s joints and screws are showing, and no child is going to choose her over the lighter doll, with her neat sweater and trendy jeans that hide the hinges and screws. Couldn’t they have given all of them long sleeves and egually cute clothes? Plus, they made the lighter girls hair look natural, giving little girls more play options by having it so that it goes from straight to curly, while the darker dolls appear to be sporting bad weaves.
Also, why is it that in every line of dolls that come in 3 tones, the medium toned girl is always the main girl while the darker and lighter girls serve as her sidekick?

Why would anybody think these dolls are offensive or racists? Why is it black people are never satisfied? When the dolls looked like little white girls, black ppl had something to say, but now when they actually listen to what we have to say and fixed it, yall still got something to b***h about. When will our race ever be content with something. Now we got people saying that the lighter and darker skin dolls aren’t the same….Who cares! How would you feel if there wasn’t any black dolls period! Oh and ofcourse the weight topic had to come up. Why would a little girl need a “thicker” doll? What sense does that make. They are just toys. How about instead of being so obsessed with inconsequential bulls**t like this, try and better yourself!

I applaud Mattel for making Barbie dolls that have more authentic features like fuller lips because we as a people have fuller lips and for making wider noses cause we as a people have wider noses and for darker skin tones cause we as a people have darker skin tones and for curly hair cause we as a people have curly hair. Thats us people, how in the world are we going to get others to accept us our features and everything about us if we dont start doing it? I am disturbed many times when the only shade of black we see on tv and movies are often light brown ,caramel or very light but dark and very dark are either thrown in the background with a 3 second blink or not shown at all.Thank you Mattel!!!!
