Hey! Apollo~ You are that iconic place in hearts of Afro-Americans all over the world.A home where we can say is our own where no body but a black body can sing and dance and be all that they are~Beautiful black awareness all wrapped up in one so that we can show the throngs of folks that tune in each week and show up too, we truly are of the King and Queen ilk. Performers young and old have pranced and parodied their way across this historic stage. I remember Phyllis Hyman.Luther Van Dross,Tyrese,Minnie Ripperton, Mia,(Comedians) Eddie Murphy,Richard Pryor many have left us but in our hearts they remain as real as their voices whether it was in song, prose or comedic reactions we gave them the toast of life well spent as an entertainer on the ‘Stage Of Apollo where History was made time and time again~ Where we were reminded of our characters and our greatness,The O’Jay’s.Eddie Levert Jr. & Sr. We remember you ‘Teddybear” In all ways a reminder of our uniqueness in this world~Remember the Apollo~ Congrats on this Celebration of Black History in Entertainment

I remember ” The Apollo”, It was the favorite show of mine, when It came on It was most deffitnely “Show Time.”….During Amateur night, and all my favorites played there allot, – In fact,Harlem will always be the number one spot…….Apollo had,..comedy acts, dancers, singers in rage, If they weren’t good, sand-man would get them off the stage…..Apollo produced some of the greatest actors and actresses,..Today’s top 10 that’s on the list….Like Stevie Wonder,..yeah, he paved the way, for some of the greatest sounds that the ears have heard today…But the crowd,as we know – they played their relentless part, in fact – that’s how Luther got his start…If the talent wasn’t right, – regardless of how dim or bright the lights,..- you wouldn’t see them again the next Saturday night…That’s how it was always done,..The Apollo theater,..was and is identical to none..Some shows tried to relate, duplicate and perpetrate,..but then they miss,..they couldn’t get it straight…..What they fail to realize, – what was taking place before their eyes,..It was history being made,..- ” What A surprise.”…Apollo was our way of displaying,..undisputed talent that was unrecognized in our black women and men…Except, you got a free sample then,..and then they’d come back, – and compete, and try to win again…Apollo gave birth to pioneers like “Ron DMC,..Russell Simmons, Rakim and Eric B.”…Luther Vandross, sing R&B,..Martin Lawrence and Deff Poetry, always,..Apollo in Harlem was the place to be….I use to dance in front of the tv, pretending I was on stage, blowing the crowd away, like I was a twelve guage,..If you made it to the stage – It didn’t mean that you had it made,..you had to truly impress the crow – and then get paid….I’m only 42, and that was years ago,..75 years later, – Apollo is still the number one show..Always will be – I thought I’d let you know,..”I gotta go-ooo,..It’s time for The Apollo Show.”…Peace to all the one’s that paid their dues,..with original skills,..were the only tools they had to use…..No amount couldn’t pay your fair,..because If you didn’t have what it took, – you simply wasn’t there….You couldn’t sleep with the producer, and make it to the top,..you know, – when they hit the stage at The Apollo,- They rubbed the rock….It was like wishing on a star, – at the very top,..and when they reached the top,..they still didn’t stop….Instead they kept giving – the very best of them,..Even when,..their vision seemed like their chances were slim…..Apollo crowd, they still showed them love,.,because Apollo Theater is a show that’s shown from Heaven above…..” I FOREVER LOVE APOLLO!” Jerry Lee Parker…..

It is amazing how American Idol and so many other shows have boosted national and international attention for up and coming stars. The Apollo Theatre was the place to be for me and my family since we could not make it to New York on a Saturday day it was great enjoyment just to be able to see so many African Americans performing. I was also able to experience the love and culture of the African American race when The Apollo Theater would allow other enthnicities to particpate and were given a fair chance to excel. This is what a night at the Apollo Theatre meant to me giving people a fair chance to express their talents reqardless of race, creed, color, ethnicity or religion. God bless you Apollo and Happy 75th Anniversary with love.

I have always enjoyed the entertainment.. Watching STARS
Be BORN! African-Americans should be proud of having such a tremendous BUILDING in one of the most historical parts of New York. Harlem was filled with richness of beauty and being an African-American at the turn of the century was an honor. Harlem was the renaissance of authors, FIRSTS in multi-millionairism, and just being a part of the African-American culture of that time.!

    Once again Apollo Theater…
    HATS OFF
    TO A BEAUTIFUL HISTORIC
    BUILDING!

I was born and raise in Mahattan not to far from the APOLLO. When I was a little girl my mother was in love with Billy Stewart. He sang Sitting in the Dark! She had no babysitter so he was the first person I ever saw there at around 5 years old. As I got older, I started going on my own. My favorite performer was Pattie Labelle. When I say she puts on a show, I loved it. The Apollo keeps the memories for me. So many of the African Amercian people started there and are still today legends. I don’t know what we would do if the Apollo ever closed down. Keep the legend of the APOLLO going!
Congradulation for 75 wonderful and joyous years of entertainment.

The Apollo Theater, what a legacy. I remember my father talking about the barriers that black had to overcome and what an impact the Apollo Theater had with providing the African American entertainer the means to bless us with their talents. Many renouned artists have graced that stage. I always felt proud to see “my people” displaying their ‘arts’ on this stage. WOW. I hope to one day bring my grandchildren to this historical place…The Apollo Theater.

Good morning, 75 wonderful years, congratulations, may Apollo have many more to showcase new and existing talent. Watching Showtime at the Apollo was a major event in my home, while growing up, we all gathered around the TV. Kids, parents, grandparents, everybody. It was a program that we were so excited about, something that belonged to us, a show that displayed our talents and great diversity. My prayer would be for Apollo to continue to be a positive agent for our gifted people.
The Apollo brings us together all age groups and we are all so aware that ‘it takes a loving and concerned village’.
We need our music kept alive and the histories and lives our artists past, present and hope for those in our future. Much love ‘4us’

When you ask any entertainer what stage they were on when they realized that they had finally achieved success, the answer is always the same, The Almighty Apollo Theatre. I’ve had the pleasure of performing there in 1990 with Big Daddy Kane, and to this day, I say it was my greatest achievement. Happy Anniversary to the greatest arena on earth.

In 1979, I was backstage at the Apollo Theater for the Parliament/Funkadelic “Uncle Jam Wants You” show.During a break, former Spinner’s lead singer Phillipe Wynn approached me & requested that I hold his hat & cane while he instructed the security team to be kind to a female fan who rushed onstage while he sang “Sadie”.Afterward, he asked me for his walkin’ cane & hat, thanked me,and then performed “Rubberband Man”.

The Apollo Theater! I once had the opportunity to perform there back in 91. I tied for 1st place at a talent show at Howard University. I still look at the tape of my performance. None of my family members would buy tickets. So here I am, still dreaming of that day to sing the blues on what I consider to be one of the most amazing theaters in the whole world…The Apollo Theater!

    Hello,
It would be such an honor to win tickets to the Appollo Theater. Not to mention Steve Harvey or Patty LaBelle. I’ve never been but watched it every Saturday night since Scatman was there. This is such a huge part of our history. It would certainly would give me something to share with my grandchildren.
Keep on doing what you’re doing.
    Be Blessed

The historic Apollo theater is a trademark to African American legacy in Arts and Entertainment. Personally, I am very happy and proud that it has survived the many generations in which opinions, lifestyles, and culture has changed in which mandate our heritage as a people. There was an instance while in New York I visited the Apollo Theater and it gave me the sense of belonging, something to nurture and look forward to in terms of substance, and maintaining a black perspective.
