Dear Debra Lee,

Sunday night’s BET Awards show was a disgrace. It’s sad and unfortunate that your network, owned by Viacom, continues to crank out mediocrity and perpetuate negative stereotypes of black men, women, and children. Although you likely received high ratings for the awards show, there is no honor in reinforcing the status quo’s opinion of black people. Your tribute to Michael Jackson and the overall show had its great moments, however, BET failed to deliver a solid, quality show. Rather than “raising the bar” and presenting African-Americans as a creative, proud, dignified people, BET lowered the bar for the entire world to see. The BET Awards drew a huge audience to watch a tribute to Michael Jackson, but left millions of viewers feeling disappointed, embarrassed, and reduced to classic stereotypes.

During the most blatantly sexist performances of the night, the executives at BET failed to act and display intelligence, courage, and leadership. Show executives watched, approved, and applauded as artists Lil’ Wayne, Drake, and Cash Money brought young, under-aged girls onto the stage to dance and serve as window dressing while they performed “Every Girl,” a song that reduces girls and women to sex objects. In a culture where one out of four girls and women are either raped or sexually assaulted – and where manipulative men routinely traffic vulnerable women into the sex industry – it is not okay that BET allowed this to happen. BET owes its entire audience – particularly girls and women around the world – an apology for its failure to intervene. BET should also take immediate steps to ensure that this kind of sexist performance does not happen again. Sunday night’s show epitomizes why so many black people worldwide are fed up with BET and feel strongly that your network inaccurately represents black men and women.

Please take my letter and criticism as one that represents millions.

Sincerely,
Byron Hurt

yes, the show had great moments, like the ne-yo, lady in my life tribute, the O’jays tribute, and beyonce and jamie foxx. Other than I was like, what the heck are they doing. I was dumbfounded when I saw the beautiful black little girls, on the Drake, and lil wayne performance. It was disgraceful, and I the lyrics were disgusting. I hope BET gets it’s letter because there were serious problems wrong with the show. I cosign as well!

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH THE LETTER THAT WAS WRITTEN.. BET HAS LET US DOWN AS A BLACK RACE.. I ONLY TUNED IN TO THE SHOW BECAUSE I WANTED TO SEE MICHAEL JACKSON VIDEOS AND TRIBUTES AND TO HEAR HIS SONGS.. BUT WHAT I GOT WAS… LIL GIRLS YES LIL GIRLS THEY DIDN’T HAVE BREAST YET.. DANCING TO A SONG THAT I DON’T EVEN LET MY CHILDREN LISTEN TO DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT IS DISRESPECTING FEMALES.. ALSO WE DO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MEN RAPIN NOT JUST HEALTHY GIRLS BUT ALSO THE HANDICAPP AS WELL… BUT THEN I SEE BEYONCE’S ACT AND I WASN’T IMPRESSED WITH IT.. ALONG WITH JAY Z.. DOA.. HE WAS CALLIN OUT RAPPERS AND SINGERS I DIDN’T SEE ANY TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL IN THOSE LYRICS… THEN JAMIE AND NEYO CAME OUT AND SANG THE LAST SONG EVEN AS I TURNED THE CHANNEL I WAS STILL LIKE DAMN DAT’S IT? I WAS LEFT EMPTY… I WANTED TO SEE CHRIS BROWN REMAKE THRILLER AND USHER DANCE AND NEYO DANCE… I WANTED TO SEE MORE THEN WHAT I GOT… I WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER DRINKIN A PEPSI AND PLAYIN MY OWN WINDOWS MEDIA FILES FOR MY OWN PERSONAL TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL JACKSON…THIS WAS A BIG LET DOWN.. BET YOU COULD HAVE CAME BETTER WITH THIS SHOW… IT WAS LIKE EATING GRITTY GRITS OR DRY CEREAL…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/WON8FUL8/ WON8FUL8

REALLY I DON’T FEEL LIL WAYNE SHOULD BE AROUND LIL GIRLS BECAUSE OF HOW HE TREATS WOMEN.. LIL WAYNE ABUSES DRUGS AND WOMEN… I WANTED TO PULL THE LIL GIRLS OFF THE STAGE AND BEAT THEIR ASS.. I’M LIKE WHERE IS THEIR PARENTS? THAT SONG IS MAKIN IT OKAY TO HAVE SEX WITH MENTAL SLOW WOMEN CHILDREN… THEY PUT A LIST OF WHO THEY WOULD HAVE SEX WITH AND TRUST ME EVERY FEMALE WAS LISTED…SEX IS A SPECIAL ACT THAT SHOULD ONLY BE EXPRESSED WITH THE PERSON YOU LOVE NOT THE PERSON UR FEELIN NOT A PERSON WHO IS A STRANGER… LIKE I SAID BEFORE IN ONE OF MY BLOGS I SAID IT SEEMS LIKE SOME FOLKS ARE TREATING SEX LIKE FAST FOOD.. ORDERING DYCK AND PUCCY WITH A STD TEST ON THE SIDE… WHAT ABOUT RESPECT? WHAT ABOUT TEACHIN YOUNG CHILDREN TO RESPECT THEIR MINDS AND BODIES? I’M NOT GOIN TO SIT HERE AND LIE I WAS LISTENIN TO THE SONG AND WHEN I LISTENED TO THE SONG BECAUSE HALF THE TIME I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT LIL WAYNE IS SAYING…BUT WHEN I LISTENED TO THE SONG I COULDN’T BELIEVE THE LYRICS AND TO HIT THE STAGE WITH THAT SONG AT TRIBUTE FOR MICHAEL JACKSON?

I applaud this guy for stepping up and writing this letter. I pray that Debra Lee doesn’t just toss it in the trash and let it go. They should do a show that is a tribute to MJ rather than what was presented. I’m hurt by a lot of the things that BET is showing as Black Entertainment these days. It keeps us in the catagory that so many of us have rose above….

… Now, I know that some of you are going to get mad at my response
    But I dont give a s**t
I tottal agree with the letter. I’ve never been a fan of B.E.T., dont think I will be. No, Im not racist, no Im not some white girl either, BUT B.E.T. DOES place African Americans in a light of ignorance. Many of the younger viewers who watch this channel dont gain anything positive out of it. How are we as a people suppose to come up and be inspired if all we see is some big booty girl shaking her ass to get some attention while there is some guy in the backround yelling, “Shake it Hoe!”
The media already stereotypes us as ignorant, unintellgent and ghetto hoodrats, which is FAR from what we are. We are a strong and powerful people who have made many accomplishments and have set the standards for the world to recognize.
You dont see that s**t being brought up on B.E.T.
Nor do you in any other channel
    (MTV, VH1).
Its just a shame at what our youth is being exposed to and what they feel is the right direction they need to be in.
HELLO PEOPLE, a man talking about F**KING every girl in the world is not something I would want my kid listening to.
Yea, Yea, throw that “he is an entertainer” crap at me all day long
Fact is, its an imatatible act. Boys will think its okay because they see an idol do it and they will continue to look at women as sex objects instead of people.
And women will continue to think that men are just horny dogs.
Im just saying, whoever wrote this letter had alot of good points. I agree 100 percent.

THE SHOW WAS OKAY THANKS TO JAMIE BUT IT WAS A VERY BAD AND DISRESPCETFUL TRIBUTE TO OUR KING OF POP ALSO PEOPLE THAT SUPPOSE TO BE THERE WASN’T AND THOSE THAT SUPPOSE TO SING DIDN’T… LIKE CHRIS, MARIAH,WHITNEY AND MORE…BUT ITS ALL GOOD

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/damassager/ damassager

I am total agreement with this column, I was embarrassed watching Lil Wayne and his goons parade around stage rapping that BS at an awards show that is supposed to be a tribute to the greatest entertainer that has ever lived, it was shocking, sexist and stupid.

They dropped the ball by not allowing Chris Brown to come on stage and pay tribute to the King of Pop. This was supposed to be a night where BET showed class and dignity but they fell way short with far too many inconsistent and ghetto moments.

Holy s**t….am I seeing this correctly?…Did these people who make these threads ACTUALLY make something that FINALLY makes sense, has teeth, and gives credibility, accountability, and responsibilty BACK to my community?

I can honestly say i’m speechless….and if anybody knows me from my usual responses, being speechless is equivalent to 2nd coming….

I agree 100% to this thread. And for the first time, i don’t even care what everybody else has to say whether it’s in agreement or whether it’s those MORONS who sit there and yap about someone “hating” on a drug addict with no rap talent.

My ONLY question now is whether or not this is a REAL letter to BET, because this is not something that ONLY needs to be on display here, but this needs to be delivered to BET also.

I say we ALL copy and paste this letter and email it to BET individually…because that station has gone to the ghetto dogs soon after the dude who use to host Video Soul left. I forgot his name…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/IWalkAlone247/ IWalkAlone247

And just one for the road….

Jamie foxx f**ks up everything he touches…I swear….that dude has NO damn talent…and half the s**t he said in that show was promoting his corny ass next appearance somewhere…come on now…hes not exempt…this was a dedication night and turned it into a poorly hosted self promotion…

All I can say is THANK YOU NEYO!!

This dude can do no wrong with me…and I don’t even listen to this new crap coming out these days…Neyo was saving EVERYBODY that night…especially jamie Fox’s no talent-having ass at the end…

Can someone PLEASE explain to me why they didn’t have Neyo and Joe do that final song?

I agree 100% with this open letter to BET. I didn’t watch the whole awards show, i just caught a little of it because i wanted to see the tributes to MJ. However, i did catch that Lil’ Wayne and Drake performance and i thought it was a disgrace and disrespectful. I mean, i don’t even like Lil’ Wayne and i don’t know who Drake is, but if they are going to be parading around the stage performing songs like “Every Girl” i think it’s called, the least they could have done was have models on stage that were of age. To have those little girls parading around onstage with them not only made them look bad, but it also made BET look bad. They should have never even allowed that to go on. This is the reason why I don’t watch BET now.

Finally someone sees that BET is not positive, it only enforces the negatives that people think of all BLACKS!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Kelis_TheMagnificent/ Kelis_TheMagnificent

BET should be renamed RET, “Rasists’ Entertainment Television,” because it surely doesn’t demonstrate what entertains African-American people. Instead, it entertains those prejudice individuals, of any race, who decide to reinforce their negative stereotypes about others, and in this case African-Americans. Frankly, I would advise anyone who watches BET to discontine. “You are what you eat,” and if you continue to eat the stereotypes BET feeds you, you will ultimately become that…

I am so glad someone took the time to do what needed to be done.Address the foolishness that was the BET awards! It was horrible and in hardly no way a tribute to Michael Jackson! No one was a part of a dance tribute and the only one there worthy of being a part one was Ginuwine who only gave a MJ memory. Booooooo! Where was Usher,Omarion,Justin Timberlake and especially Chris Brown! If they were not prepared to do it right they should not of done it at all! I am glad others noticed those young girls on stage during that already deplorable Young Money performance what in the hell was that about. BET dropped the ball big time.

First and foremost.I think that BET did its best on the little time that they had to prepare. For those who have a problem with the Cash Money Performance, you all need help. Love and F**k is two different things. If the parents didn’t have a problem with it, why should america. Everyone is worried about the wrong thing. That was not anything, it was cute and innocent. If that child and her friends wanted to be on the stage with her daddy let them, Its Harmless. People set your egos aside What you need to be worried about is the White man who was a Duke University employee, in NC molesting the little black kids on webcam. that is what is really sick. You all need to grow up and worry about what is really important.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/bremari1987/ bremari1987

Wow, very well written. You took the words right out of my mouth! I was disgusted with the awards show on Sunday night. It was down right pathetic to see BET feed right into black stereotypes. I can understand that BET only had 3 days to redo the entire show for MJ, but they should have dedicated an entire segment to him and not the whole show. I say that because MJ was worth more than what he was given, and BET should have allowed more time to give him a proper tribute show with great performances from today’s top artists like Chris Brown and Beyonce. I also heard a lot of rumors that Jayz wouldn’t perform if BET let Chris Brown on stage and that Beyonce was supposed to perform Smooth Criminal, which would have been great to see, but at the last minute she performed Ava Maria. BET really needs to reevaluate their image and how they make black people look!

While I agree with the second half of the letter. If anyone was listening to the statements. It was said the show was dedicated to Michael Jackson and that there will be a tribute during the BET Awards ceremony. So I didnt watch it with the understanding that the whole show would be about Michael Jackson. I think that it was a rushed show, which was done pretty well considering that they changed it in such a short time. The show had great moments.I did not appreciate all the profanity that was aired. We could’ve really done without that. Loved hearing the Michael Jackson songs by different artist and loved hearing NE, Guy and BBD.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Budaphly/ Budaphly

I don’t understand why you people are trying to defend the drake performance with “well the parents said it was okay”. That is the exact talk that gets kids who don’t know better in the most degrading circ**stances. By allowing their daughters to be on stage dancing to a song that degrades women, other little girls will be watching it also and wanting to glorify the song. It’s disgraceful. If they had gone up and danced with Ne-Yo, that would have been something special because I find Ne-Yo to be a very respectable artist because of his songs and content. But instead, they looked like video girls in training. That was scary and shameful to watch.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mzjuiceyfilled/ mzjuiceyfilled

Completely agree with the letter…the show was a disgrace and embarrassment to millions.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/eshaneua/ eshaneua

They need to revamp and revise the ENTIRE NETWORK, not just the awards show. I haven’t watched BET since the fiasco with Breezy not being allowed to pay tribute. Luckily, My Network TV ( formerly known as UPN) re-aired the 2006 World Music Awards in which Chris performed Thriller before MJ was introduced. In a word, BET has gone to HELL in a hand basket.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Peninsulachick/ Peninsulachick

Everyone on Facebook that saw the show declared it a total train wreck. They cited specific issues, like the sound being wack, timing and marks that were off, etc. Yes, it was rushed, but production issues like the ones mentioned should STILL be on point. I didn’t watch the show, personally, but that’s simply because I quit watching BET years ago. What needs to happen next is that we let the people who are making the “soft core” porn that BET airs that we are interested in QUALITY, and refuse to support them until they step their game up, and get CREATIVE. Be respectful of their women (black women), and of themselves (black men)in word (the songs they make) and action (the videos). It’s timje for us to do things the way we know how, and quit reducing ourselves to the lowest common denominator. All we do is gratify the people who believe blacks to be incapable of anything but low thinking and low living. Turn the corner, Ms. Lee. I doubt it will happen, because she appears weak to me; a mere figurehead. She has no power, and no say. Muted by the REAL force behind the network. VIACOM. Need to get at them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NtelligentlyInclined/ NtelligentlyInclined

I agree with the letter and opinion 100%. Fortunately I turned it before the Lil Wayne performance. I’m mad that I watched any of it to be honest. I NEVER watch BET. Theres nothing going on on that channel that interest me even remotely anymore. I decided to watch the awards show because it was suppose to be a dedication to Michael Jackson, unfortunately it was far from such. Jamie Foxx did his best to keep the focus on Michael and to keep the mood light, but overall it was barely about Mike at all. Half the stupid ass people didn’t mention him at all. I want to say on one hand I’m glad they made the attempt at a memorial show, and I understand it was short notice. But I also want to say that Michael NEVER did anything half-assed, and if they were going to do a show in his honor it deserved better planning, and obviously it deserved some RULES for the performers. I’m not nor have I ever been a fan of waynes so I’m glad I missed his performance. Speaking in terms of disappointment this awards show didnt let me down at all.

WOOOOHOOOO!! finallyy. and like i’ve said before. it was disgusting, the lil wayne performance. so lets make a tribute to michael but oh lets not forget the children he loved so much, bringing them on stage while “effin every girl in the world” plays what kinda crap. knowing michael faced charges of that kinda crapp. i was donee after that.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/uschoney09/ uschoney09

I understand that due to unfortunate timing, there was very limited timing, but the performances were horrible.

These are singing professionals and the garbage they displayed (especially with new edition, i expected way better) was utterly ridiculous. I didn’t expect all the pomp and circ**stance deserving of such an artist, but I did expect people with actual talent (like shaka khan, whitney, heck somebody) to give tribute and sing in his honor, not dang ciara and keri hilson. What type of mess is that? Back to vh1 I go.

    From BET.com: July 3, 2009

STATEMENT FROM BET NETWORKS RE: YOUNG MONEY AT THE “BET AWARDS ‘09”

    By BET Networks

“BET Networks deeply regrets the performance by Young Money at the BET AWARDS ’09 (featuring Lil Wayne, Drake, Gudda Gudda and Mack Maine). Elements of the performance were unplanned and should not have happened.

“We value and appreciate the feedback from our viewers and have edited Young Money’s performance for all BET AWARDS ’09 encore presentations.” See: http://www.bet.com/Specials/betawards09/betawards09_news/news_BET_Networks_statement

With all of the attention they received due to Michael’s untimely death, it appears that the network is getting the message that many were displeased, especially the BET bread-and-butter, that Black 18-45 demographic. But is the statement enough?

It seems many of the good things that happened during the show, including Jamie’s comedy and performance (IMHO), New Edition, the Tyrese-Johnny Gill-Trey Songs tribute to the “mighty mighty” O’Jays, Jay-Z, etc. were all overshadowed by one ill-planned song…”Every Girl.” The mere image of underage girls dancing to a song whose original lyrics are “I wish I could f*** every girl in the world” turned most people off, in spite of the fact that the girls were related to Wayne and Baby.

But here’s what I need some clarity on: Are people unable to compartmentalize those facts because of Michael’s legal troubles and how this all reflects on his life and death? Or are people just being sensationalistic and petty? Or (and here’s where we keep it 100), are some Black folk just mad because, as I mentioned above with all of the national Michael Jackson-related news coverage, “the good WHITE folk was watchin’?”

    Whatchu think?

I don’t watch BET but I did this week because of Michael Jackson. The show was disappointing and somewhat sad. I expected so much more. What is wrong with expecting the very best! My mother never told me to be on my best behavior because white people are around she said be on your best behavior because she raised me that way! We as people need to have standards and values; it has nothing to do with another race. I conduct myself like gentleman because that is how I was raised and I don’t know any other way to act. Hopefully for the people that watch BET the station will get sold to someone else who will improve the quality of the programming. The channel has really hit rock bottom.

The only part of the show that was a bit out of control was when Jamie made references to his p***s by calling it a “BOA” a “BOA CONSTRICTOR”. They had to “bleep” so many lyrics to Lil Wayne’s song, that perhaps he should have just performed something else.

The BET awards were flat out terrible…But they didn’t let me down…I mean seriously why are ppl so surprised by the lack of moral structure and celebrities…So, Lil’ Wayne performed a explicit crappie song and every word had to bleeped out…BIG DEAL…he is the hottest rapper out right now…BET would be fools not to showcase him…Nothing is going to change when it seems like its getting worse…The name of the game is ratings and BET scored…Not even a well written letter can change that…But hey what do I know I’m just a small city nobody from Nebraska

How long will it take for the majority of us to realize that BET is not in the best interest of African Americans. Since this was sold, it has continued to go downhill and not fulfill the wishes of what it means to be African American in the United States.
First and Foremost, We in this Community of African Americans ( I have to embrace two side because o my heritage), must come to grips with the fact that it is our Dollar that controls what is place on this channel. It is our Neilsen which allows for it to move forward.
If enough of us get together we can make this Entertainment genre understand that we support it, but only under the watchful eye that it portray African Americans truly in a positive light. Only then, can we make a difference to those young people coming in behind us.

I totally agree we need to hold BET accountable for the mess they put on TV.

BET did an ok job honoring MJ. They had very little time to put it together. Most disappointed in production manager or who ever made the decision to allow 10 and 12 year old girls on the stage while Weezy, Cash Money and Drake were on the stage sing about doing it to women all over the world. I said to my daughter… “Where are those girls momma’s” then to find out that two of the young ladies was Lil Waynes daughters and Tiny’s Daughter. Shame Shame Shame. Lil Wayne is smart he is not stupid. Why don’t people think about what they are doing;. Weezy is this the only way you can find time to spend with your daughter? Sick Sick

To ease the guilt of the crap they (BET) gives “our community” (even though they are owned by “the man -lol”)The awards show attempted to showcase the people in our community that are being positive and doing something to better their lives and our community. Though they only had less than a minute to be honored and were not allowed to speak, BET execs must have fel they did soemthing positive.

I despise BET, can’t stand the shows, and darn sure don’t watch the videos. I watch the awrad show because it’s one of the few out there showcasing our community. But again they have left me with a bad taste in my mouth and having to question “WTF is wrong with my people?”

Ms. Debra Lee when you watch the anticis of the celebrities you all place on the show are you proud? Or do you shake your head in horror of what your network and bosses are portraying our people to represent?

The Bet Award Show was Crap!!. The World Watched as lil Wayne Jumped around like a fool. I don’t care How Hott He supposed to be right now. He could have Pulled up his freakin Pants up. I don’t even allow my Children to watch BET anymore. We only watched Because of the so called tribute to Mr Michael J. Jackson.
TVONE is so much better..It showcase our people in a better way…
