Well Fox use to be the black people network in the 90′s. They really held us down. But anyways I don’t watch this show nor do I watch Family Guy so IDC about either one.

I’ve watched the show before…I dont think its any more minstrel than some of the black shows on BET or the CW. If anything its less about the color of their skin and more about making people laugh. Its no more offensive than Family Guy…But I really respect a white guy for having the guts to make a cartoon that centers around black culture…If anything the jokes are more at the expense of the people around them.

The Boondocks was more offensive than the cleveland show and family guy put together. And that was made by a black man.

The thing is the show was being thought of before Obama got into office, it’s not like they thought of it overnight and put it on tv the next day. Besides, it’s just a tv show, made by the people who brought us Family Guy, what do you really expect? At times its satirical comedy just like Boondocks and SouthPark… but mostly its just a cartoon, quit throwing out the race card for everything.

The modern day negroes are too sensitive for me, get a freaking life………I love the Cleveland Show, funny as hell.

Fact of the matter is, there ISN’T one show with Blacks as main characters that’s not minstrel perhaps with the exception of Bernie Mac, I never watched it so I can’t say for sure, but the fact that all black shows are comedies and no serious acting or storytelling, is a bad sign in and of itself. Its like Hollywood doesn’t believe a serious show with a black family as the focal point is a money maker. As dumbed down as we are these days, perhaps thats a true statement.

I think people are missing the point. Amos and Andy was “funny”, Stepin fetchit was funny too. Keep in mind, something can be simultaneously funny and degrading. So is the Cleveland Show degrading or not? I have never watched it so I can’t say, but we should stay focused on what the question is.

Yeah Seth McFarlane has been fighting for at least 5 years to get The Cleveland Show made…and the characters are voiced by well known black actors like Nia Long,Sanaa Lathan, Regan Gomez (chick from the parent hood). and a few others…I think if the show was as racist as the author claimed they would be the first to walk out. The only person who isnt black is cleveland…he’s voiced by a white guy.

The Cleveland show ALWAYS talk to the Black family as a joke…it’s more offensive than funny….there always been other comedies I like better than this…….maybe I ought to get my cartoons out, A cop named Cleo who raises a twin niece and nephew with a list of characters(I’d been drawing these for over 30 years)and my 30+ characters has some good and bad characters, but not offensive or stereotypical like the Cleveland Show…..

Cosby is O.K in limited doses;Liked lionel on the Jeffersons, with George loudmouth acting;Weezy is sometimes irritating, and I can’t stand Florence who does nothing but berate George(I would had fired her lazy ass a long time ago);Like Living Single with my favorite character Max caustic personality and a H-O-T-T-I-E with a banging body after Cosby;Living Color is a great comedy/variety with my favorites Damon(love me some Homey) and Jamie (Wanda is a riot)and those FLY girls(Jennifer is a BUTTAFACE,though);Fresh Prince was good with Aunt Vi (Axing Janet was a BIG mistake). The Prince is overrated, like that airhead Hilary and Uncle Phil:Sanford is my ALL TIME FAVORITE (offshoot of AMos &Andy, but funnier)grew up with Redd Foxx and always LMAO, and Lamont is a great, straight man;don’t care Much for Martin; Different World is underrated got better after Lisa Bonet was booted out; Soul Train I watched rarely growing up , but could relive the jammin tunes back inthe day; Good Tomes at times make you FEEL poor and never really solved any of those poor, Black problems…JJ is overexposed sometimes buffonish and James was jealous of him and wanted to clock him; Willona always in their face and Thelma (the least used member) is a H-O-T-T-I-E (I had a crush on her, along with Freda Payne and Lola Falana); Girlfriends are cool;Haven’t seen Soul Food, Bernie MAc or the Apollo, but What’s Happening didn’t do it for me; It’s whack…..So is Steve Harvey, Never seen Fame, New York Undercover, Liked Roc; Flip Wilson and Jamie are O.K. I never though Flip was all that except for Geraldine; Different Strokes was O.K.; Family matter is O.K,too although I don’t dig Laura jacking on Steve Urkel; Arsenio should STILL be on the air and is funnier than that lothario Dave or Jay and that late, racist Johnny Carson; Amen and 227 was whack; just my opinion, folks…..

You have to take the Cleveland Show for what it is – a comedy spin-off. I may be wrong but I believe the writers of this show are the same writers for Family Guy and if that’s the case, then they’re white. How much insight does a white man (Seth McFarlane and Mike Henry) have into living and growing up in a black family? And better yet, why would they care to portray them in a positive light? It’s all in the name of comedy for them. Now, what’s interesting is that the voice of Donna is Sanaa Lathan, and Reagan Gomez-Preston is the voice of Roberta and Kevin Michael Richardson is the voice of Lester and Cleveland Jr. Somehow, I saw a little bit of irony there when I read this article and knew half the cast members were not white.

It really has to be looked at in the context of Family Guy and American Dad .. created by the same people. Yes it’s offensive, but all of the shows are … that’s their niche.

Does it make it less offensive? No.

Yes, this is a desperate attempt by those racist hate mongers at News Corp to advance the negative stereotypes of black people. It won’t work. Black people are moving the chains and there is nothing FOX can do. News Corp is waging war and they are trying to launch media scud missiles at black people. And if you’ve actually watched the show, the white charaters arent exactally portraited in “positive” light either. If any of you have watched “The Family Guy” from which “The Cleveland Show” is a spin off from you will know that they do not portray them in the highest manner. So sometimes I think that we as black people take things too seriously. See it for what it is, a comedy. I think that it is funny as hell. You know the old saying, “the truth hurts” and this show must hit too close to home for some.

I for one could not be more disappointed what some people find “humorous” and “funny as hell”. I barely made it to the end of the season opener. I guess you all wouldn’t have a problem if they made cleveland a pimp and started turning out young black girls because hey, it happens in the “hood” all the time and it’s just a cartoon. Wake the F up people!Damn. Y’all say some of us taking this too serious, well I say some of you all aren’t taking shyt like this serious enough.

It’s called an ALLEGORY folks!!! This ain’t the Proud Family (which was a great show by the way). Some things you just can’t take at face value..honestly, MOST things, but I digress. If you are offended by the show, simply put, DON’T WATCH IT!

It’s not that the show is racist, it’s that you don’t GET the show. Shows like Family Guy, Southpark, The Cleveland Show, Boondocks, etc. in my opinion are much like the Chappelle Show – using extreme in-your-face satire to show us a conglomerate of how we act as a society AT OUR WORST. To place emphasis on some of the black stereotypical antics portrayed in The Cleveland Show and straight up ignore the white stereotypical antics (they live across the street from a VERY stereotypical redneck for goodness sake) is not only biased, but makes your argument null and void. Call a spade a spade; don’t just use the parts of the argument that support your theory to call a CLUB a spade, because they’re both black.

Never was it intended for this show to speak for or to serve as a representation for black America! Its goal, if anything, is to show us HUMANITY at its extreme worst. It often makes me wonder if those who are offended from these types of shows do so because they see themselves in these characters…or because they try so hard to disassociate themselves from what the status quo considers to be “black” behavior, that they can’t find the humor in it.

I am a college educated, intelligent black queen, born and raised in the ghetto, working as a computer programmer for a very prestigious, Fortune 500 company. This show doesn’t depict me whatsoever, and honestly, no one else I know (be it hood or traditionally “educated”), though I do see SMALL pieces of people I’ve known/met sometimes portrayed. But I can enjoy it, because I can see the underlying message(s)..and THAT’S what makes it so funny!

Where was the outrage when Cleveland was on Family Guy? A family waaaay worse than the one portrayed in this show. Should all football headed babies be offended by Stewie Griffin? Get a life people and learn to sometimes let a cartoon be a cartoon.

Jlynnd is obviously very intelligent and I agree with PuroMestizo. I love Family Guy, American Dad, Proud Family and I like the one episode (the very first one) of ‘The Cleveland show that I saw. I can’t stand ‘South Punk’, Dave Crappelle, & ‘Boondiicks’! That’s all I’m gonna say on this subject. I’m outta here! ;-)

Nor for nothing, the BLACK PRODUCED cartoons all say the ‘n word’, unlike the Cleveland show, so how are they any better? The same guy who did Family Guy does this show, and on the Family Guy: the baby is a sexual deviant, the girl is a complete loser because she’s not hot, the boy is dumb and lost and the father is incompetent and the mother is a closet freak. Does that represent most of American, White families? NO! It’s just TV but they’re poking fun at a segment of ‘lost families’ with their Family Guy. Hell, in reality, whites are not even having sex, and the families are all screwed up. That could easily be Sara Palin’s family, on the Family Guy.
Point being, if you think the Cleveland show is bad for blacks, then you’re admitting that the things portrayed are BLACK issues, which they’re not, they’re ‘people-in-western-society’ issues. The mother, on the show, used to be hot, so she didn’t want the man with no playa skills back then (she wanted the bad boy- not cleveland), and got knocked up by the bad boy who abandoned her and the kids, and now she’s old, fatter and not so hot, she decides now is the time to get a ‘good man’. Why do you think that’s a BLACK ISSUE? That’s all over Western society, regardless of race. Hell, I get nothing but chicks with that situation, who want to date me, now that they’re all dumped out by these dudes and have kids with these other guys. You can’t even avoid that situation today! lol That’s all races of ladies like that. That’s a social reality of all of us today, not specifically a ‘black’ issue. His son is also not cool, and he’s fat, ok social issue not specific to blacks. The daughter is a teen who wants to be cool and hang out not listen to authority talking “you’re not my daddy!”- ok social issue not specific to blacks… You’re acting like blacks, in America, are not Americans in a Western Society. If they painted the characters white, the show would be about my next-door neighbors, who have the same situation.
