From TheDailyVoice.com:

Is it already the end of the road for Hollywood’s newest black stars?

Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe don’t need my career advice. If they were to ask me for it though, I’d tell them this: enjoy the ride. It won’t last.

The cold hard truth is there isn’t a lot of roles in Hollywood for plus-sized sistas. Mo’Nique and Gabourey are not going to have careers like Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock. There are no romantic comedies with Will Smith gazing in rapture into Gabourney’s eyes. Mo’Nique will not play Lady Macbeth or squeeze into leather and spandex to replace Halle Berry as Storm in another X-Men movie. It’s just not going to happen.

The movie industry is extremely harsh on women. Ask Kathleen Turner. Ask Angela Bassett. Get a little older, don’t apply Botox to chase away the wrinkles and when gravity begins to take its toll, you’re scrambling for jobs on television, slob comedies and Tyler Perry schlock fests. Plus-sized women catch hell when they’re White. It gets no easier when you throw color in the mix.

Text continues after gallery…

Mo’Nique’s Best Supporting Actress made her the fourth Black woman to win the award, joining Hattie McDaniel, Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson. Halle Berry took the little gold man home as Best Actress in Monster’s Ball, a movie widely despised by every Black person I know who have seen it. That isn’t to say there aren’t Black people who love the movie. I just never met any that have.

Jennifer Hudson hasn’t made enough films to be included in determining what type of career she may have. She apparently has dropped 60 pounds to play Winnie Mandela in a bio flick so good for her. It’s just unfortunate actresses have to hire personal trainers and diet like mad in order to pursue their livelihood. There’s the way the world should be and the way the world is and it doesn’t look to be changing around in favor of the fat folks anytime soon.

    I know this is an opinion page, so you have to stir up some emotions..but c’mon, the ink is barely dry on the Oscar envelopes..

    If they can make a movie that makes people look like 8-foot tall blue cats, and make over 2 Billion dollars worldwide, I think some overweight women (who are great actresses) can still find work.

    Who knows what the future holds for Monique & Gabourey… I for one is proud to see the sistas making it in Hollywood…

    F*ck this stupid a*s story. Queen Latifah is plus sized and she’s had plenty of good movie roles! PLENTY!! And this isn’t Moniques first so why would it be her last!

    Give it damn rest. Let’s wait and see. Jesus. Now, I will admit that some have suffered Oscar Winner’s Career Decline Syndrome(I made that up). Look at actresses like Marissa Tomei and Mira Sorvino and several others as examples.

    For some, it’s like winning the Heisman, and then going to the NFL and being a disappointment.

    It’s a shame people are already saying that this girls career is over when she’s only been on the scene for such a short period of time. And by the way Gabourey Sidibe just recently joined the cast of The Big C on Showtime. So it’s obvious she’s doing something right

    Real Talk. Mo’Nique should be proud of her Oscar. There’s people that are full time in the biz and don’t even have an Oscar. If this is as good as it gets for her then she should still hold her head high. Best Supporting Actresses is like the 4th highest honor in the biz. Gab made the list for Best Actress in Lead Role. First time up. How many people can say that? Have any of you did it? And the woman’s still young. Hollywood shifts and changes every second. She can easily ebb and flow like the best of them if she wants to.

    lol why is everyone so upset at the author…you have to admit it does have some truth to it…and Im a plus size female so I know and pay attention. There are a lack of roles for plus size women out here…no love stories, no heroes, usually its just movie comedies that you will see plus size women in. Im not counting Monique and Gabourey out, but they are not going to have as many opportunities as other actresses…let alone BLACK actresses. Its society and their shallow selective picking. If I had the power, I would definitely make a change. I wish them best the both of luck with their careers :)

    Totally agree with Nightowl358 we just ahve to wait and see, lets not dim the lights on these two so fast especially Mo’nique she’s been in moves for awhile now not to mention there are so great black film producers such as teh very first one Oscar Micheaux, now in current times such as John Singleton and Antoine Fuqua. So as long as there are black producers dont ever think that black females wont get a role, maybe by a “white hollywood” standard maybe or maybe not, but time will tell.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mkj72163/ mkj72163

    They can have precious 2, called precious revenge..lol

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze1/ billy-danze1

    I Think the author is right. The article is not saying that they won’t get work. When you’re an Oscar winner people will look you up, but you roles will be limited. Neither one of them will be playing Storm in any new X-men movies, although they might be able to play Amanda “The Wall” Waller in a Justice League movie (if you not a comic book nerd like me look up Amanda Waller).

    The truth is neither one is likely to be playing the love interest of Will Smith, Terance Howard or any other black movie star. They will probably be relegated to playing the tough, street smart, no nonsense friend of the pretty female lead or as the loudmouth (which she usually plays) in some Tyler Perry crap.

    Let’s be honest if you take a movie with what is considered a handsome male lead, Djimon Hounsou (chicks seems to like him) is it more believable that in the movie he would be dating either of these two over super bad chicks like Zoe Saldana or Sanaa Lathan?? As a movie goer i’d never believe it. People are saying that Monique has been in movies for a while and its true but it has been the roles that I was just talking about.

    They will have steady work but I doubt they will turn into Hollywood elite. Getting ahead in acting SHOULD be about how well you can act, but as we all know what SHOULD be and what IS are usually two totally different realities.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mizz214/ mizz214

    @billy-danze1 and Hypnotiq_Melody
    Yall seem to be forgetting that women’s roles used to be portrayed by prepubescent boys and Black roles by white men in black face. If everyone just accepted your attitudes of “that’s just the way things are” it’d still be that way. I’m a plus sized female and I only date the finest chocolate brothas out there, so why couldn’t someone make a movie about a girl like me? Art imitates life and trust me; me and many other plus sized sistas are livin good.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze1/ billy-danze1

    @mizz214

    I am well away of the history of theater and cinema but the fact remains that Hollywood has always placed a premium on good looks. YOu say you’re plus sized and have no trouble finding a man and that may be true but it is also true that you are nowhere near as big as either one mentioned in this story.

    Also art does imitate life to a degree, but only to the degree of focusing on the most common life experiences. I’m sure someplace in there world there is a black man who is from Scotland or Ireland who is dating an Asian woman, but I doubt we will have a movie about such experiences because they are niche in the grand scheme of life.

    Are there some Morris Chestnut lookin dudes out there with really big girls? Of course there are, but that too is niche its the exception rather than the rule. Hollywood focuses on what happens most often and usually not the rare exception. It would be a rare exception to see one of these two with what women would consider a fine dude. We might see hundreds of cases personally but remember this is hundreds of cases out of billions of people so that makes the percentage rather small.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mizz214/ mizz214

    @billy-danze1
    I’m going to have to disagree. There was a point in time where being gay wasn’t a “common life experience” and you would never catch a gay person on tv. Now there’s a whole gay channel. There was also a point in time where a successful black person wasn’t a “common life experience” and were only cast as servants. Things always have the ability to change, admittedly not overnight, and these ladies should go out for any role that sounds good until other actresses like them are no longer ignored.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze1/ billy-danze1

    @mizz214
    The difference is that there have always been gay people and always been successful black people (many great inventors and business figures were black from way back)as such those things are represented these days. However men who women consider attractive are USUALLY (not saying never) not after women such as those in this story.

    People look at themselves and feel that they have a certain level of attractiveness (usually reinforced by other people telling them they are cute) and such they tend to gravitate to other “attractive people”. That is the reality of life. Are there exceptions? Of course. But as you say art imitates life, the only difference is that art imitates (in most cases) the life that is most common.

    So Hollywood will not adapt their scripts towards handsome men/sexy women dating really big guys/ girls until that is as common in everyday life as seeing gay people or blacks who are doing big things.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mizz214/ mizz214

    @billy-danze1
    There have always been fat people too! And yes there have always been successful blacks and gays but have they ALWAYS been portrayed that way in Hollywood? No! So just because big girls are usually only cast as the loud friend does that mean they will always be portrayed that way? Hopefully these ladies can help make that a no as well.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze1/ billy-danze1

    @mizz214
    You’re missing my point. Of course there have always been fat people but in day to day life they have not always been and for most part still not the apple of the eyes of those who are very attractive.

    I may be wrong, but I doubt that a chick that looks like Beyonce is out looking for a dude who looks like Flava Flav (reality show aside) by the same token Those Shamar Moore cats are probably not looking for Whoopi Goldberg (millions of dollars aside).

    You’re mainly focusing on acting roles and as I said in my first post acting talent along should get you most roles that you are qualified for as far as being able to speak the lines well, but realize there are other “qualifications” to parts as well. When a producer pitches a film to a studio and the female lead needs to be a “Halle Berry type” Monique is not going to get the call no matter if she can act circles around the girls they bring in.

    Some roles are just not going to allow some women to compete for the role. The same way that Gary Coleman was probably not called to try out for the part in the Biggie movie. Producers, studios and directors want to make movies (dramas anyway) that feel as real possible and as it stands now a very attractive leading man/woman with a less than “universally attractive” lead will probably feel false to the people making the movie and to the movie going public as well.

    Most people on here in their life has seen a hot chick/dude with somebody that made them say “I woulda thought he/she could have done better than that”. People will probably say the same thing if this takes place on film. Will it ruin the movie? If its a good movie, probably not but people might leave the theater after the show thinking the movie felt kinda fake.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mizz214/ mizz214

    @billy-danze1
    I think you are the one who is missing my point. I will admit that it is not the norm to catch a Beyonce type with a Flavor Flav type, but it happens. You said yourself “Most people on here in their life has seen a hot chick/dude with somebody that made them say “I woulda thought he/she could have done better than that”. So if most people have seen/know couples like this, why would it be so far fetched to see their story on the big screen? Isn’t that why people love that Bridget Jones movie so much?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/brandip77/ brandip77

    People need to stop hating on these two. Yes, they are both fat. But they are both very talented and seemingly good, decent people. Ultimately, those qualities are what matter most. I wish both of them much success. And I know this is far from from as good as it gets for either of them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze1/ billy-danze1

    @mizz214
    No it is not common, as I said a few posts ago we have all seen it but out of the billions of people and thereby billions of relationship combination its is very rare. At the school I go to i once saw a Chinese girl dating a guy who appeared to be from Fiji or somewhere in that area.

    I saw it and i’m sure many of my fellow students saw it and as such it is reality, however that is a combination that I think many may find rare. That is probably not a relationship that you will see on screen anytime soon.

    As I said we have all seen that couple that makes up say why is he/she with him/her but those hundreds of thousands of cases or millions of cases are still rare compared to the billions of possible combination.

    Its similar to a class based caste system. Royalty probably doesn’t hang out with “the lower class” in their spare time. Similarly supermodels are probably not hanging out with the Flava Flavs of the world (money not withstanding).

    Can the girl who looks like Jessica Alba date the high school nerd with the acne? Sure she could is this likely to happen? Probably not. That is not somethng that is “common in society”. Why do you think we go “how’d he get her”? Because its a strange sight to use still. We don’t consider it common.

    Do you ask that same question when the latest hot pop star is dating the latest hot male model? No because its a common sight. It makes sense. When movie goer walk into a theater too see a drama they expect fantasy to a degree but they still expect it to be rooted in reality.

    Thats why when you see Denzel playing a lawyer in a movie you don’t see ninjas and killer robots jumping out. People expect it to be rooted in logic and reality for the most part. Either on of these two in a leading role opposite Denzel as his love interest would be illogical to most movie audiences.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SheFly69/ SheFly69

    That’s why Tyler Perry produce films. Hollywood isn’t giving or writing scripts even for Gabrielle Union or Joy Bryant! These examples prove Hollywood is for those white folks and people like Will Smith. He’s a sell out! He’s only interested in himself. I only go see Tyler Perry’s movies. Let them white folks go to their own movies. Haven’t you noticed how Hollywood is putting whites and Blacks in the same movies to draw both crowds? I’m not too fond of Denzel now either! Mo’nique with her hit TV show will do just fine and may start producing movies herself. Gabourey is going to be a spokespersonfor some diet company. You see Mo didn’t go to Hollywood and kiss those wf’s asses. They will do just fine! They have just began. They understand how Hollywood works to keep BP down.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzwatch/ jazzwatch

    Not much diffrent than Hattie Mc Daniel; ,making them take the same nutring roles or playing a character that helps out the White Hero…Hollywood STILL sees color and GIRTH……both needs to lose weight (HEALTH REASONS) and their chances might improve, but if not. there is directing prducing, writing that is waiting for good, fresh stories, not that bulls**t that has been recycled for over 50 years……

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mrenayj/ mrenayj

    How nice of you to be completely devoid of a positive attitude for the women. They can’t even enjoy a bit of their success because people are already harking on them over some damn weight. News flash, it can be lost. If they are that good of actresses, then roles will be made, and they will be given time to prepare. IT NEVER FAILS! WHEN AN AFRICAN AMERICAN/BLACK ACCOMPLISHES SOMETHING YOU CAN GUARANTEE ONE OF THEIR OWN WILL BE RIGHT THERE TO NAY-SAY. WHO THE HECK NEEDS HOLLYWOOD OR COUNTERPARTS AS ENEMIES WHEN YOU HAVE TO HEAR THIS?

    AND WHAT DID FIFTY CENT DO THAT’S SO GREAT HE’S IN THE GALLERY?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mizz214/ mizz214

    @billy-danze1
    You’re acting as if just because something is uncommon it can’t be made into a movie. Have you taken a look at movies lately? The other day I watched a movie about a girl with teeth in her vag. Whats common about that? Some of the most popular tv shows are about fat men with hot wives.(The Simpsons, Family Guy, King of Queens). And although its ending, I seem to recall ABC having a monstrous hit of a show called Ugly Betty about an overweight dorky girl with braces working at a prominent fashion magazine. From what I saw, she had lots of love interests, that were equally as attractive as any guy I’ve seen on any other show. The other day I saw a preview for a movie called “She’s Out Of My League” about a nerdy guy who becomes the love interest of an attractive woman, prompting him to ask why. Someone wants to tell these stories because they see it happening around them. It’s evident now more than ever that Hollywood is starting to tell more unconventional stories, and if people like you were to keep an open mind instead of writing them off as “fake” maybe the trend could continue.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze1/ billy-danze1

    @mizz214
    Again missing my point. IDK what movie you saw but it sounds like its a horror movie not a drama that seeks to somewhat accurately mimic real life. The difference between the show you mentioned are that two of them are animated so our suspension of disbelief comes into play more. Secondly while Doug on King of Queens was a heavy dude he was in no way huge.

    I am well aware of Ugly Betty and look at how bad America Ferrera is. With the exception of the crazy braces they made no real attempt to “ugly her up”. Se had lots of love interests because she is the protagonist of the show and the writer behind the show wants to make it a point to say “its whats inside that counts” which is true to an extent but you and I know that if a person doesn’t like your outside at first then it is more unlikely that they will approach you to get to know your inside.

    The ads for “She’s Out of My League” have been playing non stop for weeks so I am aware of the movie and as I stated in previous posts I am NOT saying these things do happen, but that it feels disingenuous when that type of thing is portrayed as a truly common and realistic even. also keep in mind that League is a comedy. Well we could debate this til time stops but I just feel that its feels forced or tacked on when you have America Fererra dating Screech from saved by the bell or something.

    Take Family Matters for example. When Myra was into Steve it made sense because they were both nerds and into the same things so even though she was bad your mind could make sense of it. On the other hand when Laura married Steve it felt forced to me. Even though we had seen Steve wear her down over 9 seasons it still felt tacked on to me to let the show go out on a good note.

    I am open minded. Never did I say these things could never happen. They could, I just feel they are not likely to. A comet could hit earth tonight and wipe out all life, but it probably not going to. I’m just being realistic.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mizz214/ mizz214

    @billy-danze1
    I’m not missing your point, i just think its bs. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree because what you view as being realistic I view as being pessimistic. Peace

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pantherg08/ pantherg08

    I think what the writer is saying is true. People need to understand that the world itslef is shallow and mean. Even some of the bigger women on here that are definding monique and precious are shallow themselves. If u are a overweight women are u attracted to overweight guys? If u was to say no, then u are just as shallow as these hollywood people. The girl that played precious is a good actress, but be realistic, besides a tyler perry movie, what kind of role is she going to play? The world itself is shallow and so are some of u people defending precious on here thats just the way it is.

    Black people have to make Hollywood take notice of our real talents beyond playing these servant/mammy and thug/pimp/w***e/abused black women roles. They only want to give awards and praise when we play characters that show our wretchedness and pitifulness like Precious, lust like Monster’s Ball, ferocity and evil like Training Day or need of help like The Blindside. Occasionally we’ll get an award for playing an historical figure but in the end it’s always about something racial. Never for great acting portrayal of a fictional character thats’ non-racial or non-stereotypical. We need our own industry and blacks need to support it as much as they support big blockbuster movies like 2012 and Avatar. Asians, indians, europeans, africans and latinos have their own industry. As much as we like movies, there’s no reason we shouldn’t have the same kind of movie industry we have for music. Black filmmakers need to meet us halfway though. Better directors, better quality movies, better stories and screenplays.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Schelby/ Schelby

    Those same rappers and athletes who make big productions out of making porn movies need to put their money into a real movie industry rather than trashy and not even decent quality porn. Stop trying to make a fast buck and help create something real and tangible your race can be proud of.
