Preview Issue of VIBE, 1992

From TheRoot.com:

Vibe magazine is dead. Just like that. No wake, no second line, no funeral. Nothing. Vibe is gone like a pocket full of singles at an Atlanta strip club. Gone, but certainly not forgotten.

I can remember the inaugural Vibe magazine cover like it was yesterday. Snoop Doggy Dogg—as he was known at the time—mean muggin’ in a West Coast skully. This was 1993 and Vibe was on point like Stacy Adams, when Snoop, Dre, Suge and the West Coast were dominating the rap game, having momentarily housed the culture from its origins in New York. Vibe, the brainchild of Quincy Jones, who says he’s trying to buy his magazine back, was on the pulse and set to bring a certain journalistic legitimacy to hip-hop, similar to what Down Beat had done for jazz and Rolling Stone did for rock and roll.

I’M GLAD VIBE IS DONE. VIBE MAGAZINE FUELED THE FIRED TO THE WHOLE FAKE “BEEF” BETWEEN THE EAST COAST AND THE WEST COAST. AND HELPED SET THE NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENT CONTRIBUTING TO THE DEATHS OF TUPAC AND BIGGIE. I remember Vibe magazines making up fake stories that never were found to be valid to hype up the imaginary hate the East And West supposedly had for each other. All to sell magazines. Good Riddance Vibe.

Vibe who? with the internet people don’t have time to read magazines anymore anyway. we have cellphones, laptops, and other stuff. This is 2009, not the 90s. Back in those days, reading newspapers and magazines made sense. Now, if you have a laptop(and btw, laptops are very affordable these days) you can just go to a coffee shop and look at anything online that you want, as opposed to being limited to just a few hundred pages of articles and images in a magazine. This was inevitable, it was coming and they knew it. The other magazines out there will also soon run out of business. VIBE should just operate a website like it operated it’s magazine. I’m sure they still have an audience.

I agree with the age of the internet. New generations of readers obtain there information via the internet for all news, gossip and updates. All businesses will have to change with technology of face the fact of looking for a new position. With the economy on the skits the last thing a family wants to do is subscribe to a magazine.

BET the printed version…HORRIBLE! I mean when your income comes from READERS and you don’t promote INTELLECT to spawn the next generation of followers, you get people scanning the pics while in line and putting your magazine back on the shelves. Target audience was 14-26 now we have matured and they haven’t replenished their reader base. Sucks for them. And great point PHILLY215!

I agree with most here, VIBE had its times but Ive out grown it – it seems like everytime I pick up a copy now its all fluff and clothing ads.
