From The New York Daily News

The director of a forthcoming movie about Martin Luther King Jr. has vowed he won’t show him in bed with a prostitute.

But Paul Webb’s screenplay also shows him to be a flesh-and-blood man who had, as his colleague Ralph Abernathy wrote, a “weakness for women.”

In one scene, President Lyndon Johnson tells FBI director J. Edgar Hoover that he doesn’t know or care “whether [King] has a gargantuan appetite for p- or whether he just sometimes needs a woman’s touch when he’s away from home …”

In another scene at a Washington hotel, King meets a flirtatious woman who tells him, “You look like you need some tender loving care, honey.”
“You’re way out of my price bracket,” says King.

“I’ll donate part of my fee to the cause,” she says.

Soon thereafter, Hoover’s agents are seen recording King’s lovemaking with the woman, as well as their postcoital conversation. King’s wife, Coretta, receives a copy of the tape, with an anonymous blackmail letter.

GOOD! Finally somebody with some damn dignity about himself! Its not like we didn’t already KNOW about it. So why NOT show it? We STILL love the man for his efforts.

So my question is, who are they trying to hide it from? Sure not anyone of our complexion.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzwatch/ jazzwatch

Of course he liked women, (I do too! :)). He was an attractive man; a catnip to ladies in the public eye….. But I don’t believe he cheated on his wife. He wasn’t perfect (but who is?????), but he’s still MY one of my 5 idols and they’re are other famous heroes who done far worse than him…..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzpast/ jazzpast

I am just curious to what is motivation in creating this film?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/crammasters/ crammasters

isn’t this the same dude that made:

    1)Monster Ball (about a WM’s wh*re)
2)Precious (showing degrading images of BW)

and now he’s making a movie based on rumors about MLK’s sex life that might or might not be true? What purpose does it serve? Who benefits from these images? Certainly not black people…

Bottom line, this is white Hollywood using sell-out negroes to do their dirty work…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BreBuffalo/ BreBuffalo

I agree with jazz and cram.
I did not know this same guy, Webb, made Monster’sBall.

I saw that and thought it was a good movie. Graphic. Hard edged, very depressed characters. Great cast of actors. You did not several stories going on with different characters and of diffrerent ethnic groups. The lives were interlinked, but still, many stories.

Precious ,I REFUSE to see that movie. Too depressing for me.

I would like to see Black (M.T.Moore,D.Sutherland) with a Black cast if they must use a Black cast. Why must theyake moviesalwayslike Precious(sexual abuse, poor, donwtrodden), and I like T.Perry, but he Blacks or Whites. It is not a criminal situtaion that happens just to Blacks.

For P.Webb making thismovie about that part of MLK, WRONG.

    Yeah,there were rumors. Proof, no.
    Abernathy, a sellout.

This movie does not have to be made.

BreBuffalo, “For P.Webb making this movie about that part of MLK, WRONG.

    Yeah,there were rumors. Proof, no.”

Sorry to dash the black people’s hopes that King was perfect, but he wasnt. He himself admitted to a five+ year long affair. His wife did an interview with one Ms Barbara Walters back in the 80′s where she was asked about his infidelities and she eloquently stated that she “Knew about the affairs and chose not to make a ‘fuss’ about them because that wasnt what he was all about”. So yes, if the admittal coming from the mouths of those involved isnt proof then I dont know what is. True, King was not all about the affairs, it didnt feter his mission or goals as a leader…BUT if this movie is indeed about his LIFE, then that part as well should be told.
I commend Spike Lee on his venture of portraying Malcolm-X on screen, not that it told every teeny detail of his life, BUT it did not shade or hide the ‘bad’ parts. He didnt make him out to be a saint or a martyr or FLAWLESS. He didnt pull many punches in the creation. Why is it that black people dont want to know ANYTHING of truth about these men in their lives? Why must we be the ONLY race that wants everything hidden or not talked about because its not nice? The bleeding hearts of the black race are such a hindrance..never a help…

jazzpast, the motivation is M-O-N-E-Y; he doesn’t want his multimillion dollar mansion forclosed…….

Webb wants to “top” Precious. So his new personal best is taking our highest icon, a black minister and civil rights leader and turn him into soft porn, black mandingo buckaroo. This is an all time low for crabs in a bucket mentality. Surely Webb has considered that MLK is in every child’s classroom. It’s our responsibility to protect what MLK stands for not drag his dirty drawals in the streets for a dollar. We write our history. When MLK comes up the last thing remembered about MLK should not be him in the sack. Why doesn’t he do Tiger’s side of his story or Chris Brown. They’re better fodder for this type of expose’ and Chris could use the money.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jahz_Lynx1/ Jahz_Lynx1

Who is Paul Webb? The guy has virtually no web prescence. I couldn’t find a photo of him; is he black? IMDb reported “King’s family passed Paul Webb’s screenplay to lawyers in a bid to halt any film from portraying the people’s hero as a cheater, who enjoyed the company of prostitutes and mistresses.” I’d send my 8 bucks to the family before I’d pay to see this film.

Well looks like HOLLYWOOD got them another nlgger 2 do they dirty work

@CaliFemme if U say what U say is true then I am searching for that interview and even Coretta may have gotten bamboozled being that J Edgar Hoover was the essential white man that showed the most trickery in defiling a mans name and stature…so whatever this DEVIL said was I don’t believe him no matter what proof he has, I will only look at it as photoshop!!…I will make a small list of his LIES & TRICKERATION
    ML King Jr.
    BPP
Community Organizations (now profiled as GANGS)
Many Black Actors & some Jewish Director’s (with the help of Walt Disney)
    Black Liberation
Athletes & Musicians (yes he spied on many of your favorites)
    Malcom X
    N.O.I. nation of islam
Authors (James Baldwin was a homo not 2 B played with)
if it was black you name it he defaced it!!!

NoCali,I do not think MLK was all perfect,no flaws. I just see why this movie would need to be made esp. by this guy,P. Webb.
Can’t he find somethingelse to do a movie on?

    It is kind of pointless.

I AM SO SICK OF MY PEOPLE ,EVERYTIME THE YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE SOME ONE BLACK TO LOOK UP TO,ONE OF OUR OWN PEOPLE TRY YO BRING THEM DOWN.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

black1105, No one is tryin to ‘bring him down’ at all. I am so sick of my people always wanting to stick their heads in the ground and run from truths. As I stated before, When did all of our hearts get to be so very bloody?? Everything seems to ‘hurt our feelings’ these days…Let me ask you black1105, Have you read the auto-bio. of Malcolm-X? Did you see the ‘based’ on movie? I have done both, the auto-bio. book was very ‘raw and uncut’ as told to Alex Haley..But it never ONCE lessened my respect for ‘X’…The book never once made me think that Haley was trying to ‘bring him down’. If one is going to include a story of LIFE, then I just think that EVERYTHING needs to be told. If someone was to do a story of my life, I wouldnt want them to start or JUST include me graduating from HS on to college etc…I would want them to include all the little ‘dirty shyt’ I had done, gotten into growing up, throughout life because ALL of it stands for ME, all of it came together to signify ME…

@NANA, Please feel free to look up the Interview. As I said it aired back in the mid 1980′s. I remember it well because I was living in Arizona at the time and im sure everyone is aware of the chaos and bigotry in that state regarding MLK day being a ‘holiday’…they aired the interview several times that week…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Brandyfan322/ Brandyfan322

No one is trying to bring him down; he said he wasnt going to put it in the movie. We all knew Dr. King was a horn-doggie! He’s a man, thats what they do lol. Men love women…he’s a man! I dont care what p*ssy Dr. King got, I only think about what he’s done for this country.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/samanthasback1/ samanthasback1

I’m sick and tired of people believing that Black Men are that “weak” that all it takes is a piece of “A–” to make them forget what they stand for. NO. Not ALL men are cheaters!Anyone that believes that has been picking the wrong men. I’m sure that no one ever thought that Dr. King was perfect. You don’t have to be perfect to have standards and morals you have to had been through the fire like Dr. King. But We are talking about a Brother that literally gave his life. That fought for causes that allow brothers and sisters to be able to even walk into a board room to say they have an idea for a movie. Have you forgotten what WE were facing when Dr. King was getting spit in his face and having dogs set loose on him. We weren’t even considered human beings! And now you honestly believe that he would even get an erection. If you REALLY understand what was going on in this country at that time you would understand that it took Godly intervention to get us away from it. I say get us away from it because we are not out of it, mentally. Anytime a brother can say that another man is weak after he’s paved the way for you to be able to walk in “the front door” of the studio to emulate that barrel of crabs. There’s a problem within. OUR community. Not theirs.OURS. Once you get to know your history you will understand that it’s not because he was a perfect man that he didn’t do those things, but because WE were a beaten people,

It is not a secret Dr king had alot of women. nobody is perfect a man that weilds that much power is going to attract alot of women. Are parents and grandparents stood and marched with that man to shape the world of present day where or people can eat at any restaurant ride on any part of a city bus without being harrassed for the color of there skin that,s the legacy dr king left behind, this blog is plot by the devils to get the new and future generations to look at the negative side of Dr.king instead of all the good work him and many other civil rights activist black and white have done.

I NEVER GIVE HOLLYWOOD THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT. THIS TRUTH TELLING IS BEING USED TO UNDERMINE THE MAN’S LEGACY. IF YOU PAY CLOSE ATTENTION, ANYTIME A BLACK MAN TRANSCENDS “HIS PLACE” IN THIS WORLD, THERE ARE FORCES ACTIVELY WORKING TO BRING HIM/HER DOWN. THIS IS ESPECIALLY PREVALENT WITH OUR ATHLETES LATELY. BLACK MEN STILL CANT DECENT AND LEGITIMATE LEADING ROLES IN HOLLYWOOD (NOT TALKING ACTION HEROES OR DENZEL), AND ARE STILL OVERWHELMINGLY, PORTRAYED AS THUGS (THE WIRE) OR COONS (PICK ANY TYLER PERRY FLICK). I’M ALL FOR TRUTH TELLING, BUT WE NEED TO ASK QUESTIONS LIKE, WHY NOW? HONESTLY, DOES THIS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH OBAMA? THINK ABOUT IT, YOU HAVE ONE MAN WHO FOUGHT TIRELESSLY FOR THE POOR AND OPPRESSED, WHO THE VAST MAJORITY OF BLACK PEOPLE LOVE (EVEN IF YOU DISAGREE WITH HIS METHODOLOGY) AND NOW OBAMA WHO IS A PUPPET FOR THE NEOCON’S IS BEING PROPPED UP, PERHAPS AS A REPLACEMENT FOR THE HEARTS AND MINDS OF BLACK PEOPLE? I MAY BE REACHING, BUT AM I REALLY THAT FAR OFF BASE? PLEASE CORRECT ME IF YOU THINK I AM!

The worst thing is that we don’t need white HWood to do it. Our own peopel do it. I would think that Daniels would be sick of making movies that just find negatives.

And MLK? Daniels should be shot. Is nothing sacred? I don’t care if he had 25 women living in the church. Leave it alone.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Soulquarian59/ Soulquarian59

It’s a shame that Black people simply cannot face reality. History is what it is. The moment you edit it, or change the facts because you think the average person won’t be able to handle it, you’ve done our own people a disservice. It’s this same type of thinking that gives governments the audacity to burn books and cover doc**ents. Because of logic like this, kids think Christopher Columbus was a hero for “discovering” a continent populated with millions of people, and why they celebrate his legacy of genocide and the slave trade unknowingly. Because of this reasoning, I grew up believing Abraham Lincoln was the Great Emancipator, even though he hated Blacks and said if he could have won the war without freeing slaves, he would have done so…

Don’t insult my intelligence by assuming I’m not strong enough or capable enough to grasp the truth. It’s not something that should be feared, it should be embraced. If Blacks were actually more willing to deal with the truth, maybe we could break free from the many issues that keep us relatively in the same social confines that we’ve been in for over 300 years…

I know that we shouldn’t base our art on the past acts of White folks, but dammit, White folks have had hundreds of years idealizing themselves in prose, lyric, verse and film; but as soon as WE wanna make a movie about one of OUR icons, we gotta be ‘realistic.’ I ain’t scared of the truth; I am quite aware of MLK’s sexual peccadilloes. I’ve read some of the COINTELPRO transcripts. I just want OUR heroes portrayed heroically. I’m like jazz and cram: WHY DOES THIS MOVIE HAVE TO BE MADE? You wanna impress me; make a movie on the life of the Prophet Muhammad, and keep it “real.”…PEACE.

An old man, about 80 or so, sits on the bench and reads the headlines emanating from the black community news and looks up into the sun and laments “is there ever again be unity in the black community?” Just then a young black man with his pants sagging, a forty dog in one hand and blunt in the other shakes him out of his bereavement when he yells at the top of his voice “hell no!” And the quite park turned in the direction of the voice and stared with mouths agape….its truly as shame that the Europeans knew what they were doing back in times of slavery when the elevated the “house n****r” over the “field n****r” because he knew it would deteriorate the only things holding us strong at the time. Ralph Abernathy only exposed Martin’s secrets because of jealousy and to make money. Period. To think educated black men would denounce this traitor not use this information to further disgraced the race. The thing that keeps us back is the samething that pushes the other man above us and that is they keep their dirt to themselves. The Kennedy’s made their money as bootleggers but how many movies is dedicated to such? Its a shame we have become the fingerpointing backstabbing society we have and that’s why we will always be second class. Black Pride, I am my brother’s keeper, Black Power, has it been so long that we have forgotten? Wake up please before its too late or is it already? Black people in the 60′s were empowered by the strong and credible leaders such as Martin and quite a few others, but now you see where we are when our leadership has died because of money and greed. So go ahead and do the same to Martin, afterall if our own killed Malcolm then why not do the same for Martin. Why not ride the coat tails of our true breathern into the next century and thank them for leaving something useful behind. The next generation will not be so lucky. And all those Obama haters, I feel so sorry for you because there is a team of left wing assassinators with their finger on the trigger just waiting for him to slip. Give the black man a break and let him try and leave a lasting legacy for our children.

Soul, I am NOT for distorting, rewriting history.

I DO NOT agree with the term, African American for example. It is rewriting history.
Mother Heneritte DeLille and other Free People of Color are now called African American. That is not true. It also takes away from history. By calling her African American takes away from what her made life, acts of charity and reason for choosing her life so incredible.

I am NOT for distorting, rewriting, and leaving out historical facts.

1-NOW,Soul,somebody,anybody,tell me, us, WHY MUST MUST this movie be made about MLK?
    2-What is the point?
3-How will people and society benefit?
4-Why will this be a good movie?
5-Will people enjoy this movie for knowledge or entertainment which is why movies are made?
6-What knowledege and/or entertainment will we gain from this movie?

You know,Mary Todd Lincoln was on the South’s side. She lost 2 kids and then her beloved husband. That totally sent her over the edge. Losing the 2 kids made her prettymuch borderline crazy. This is the truth. Robert Lincoln had to have his mother committed.

We all know the story. I realy don’t think it would be a good movie. My point, many things are facts ,ugly facts about historical figures. We don’t need a movie about them . The mostimpt.thing aboutmaking a movie is getting tickets sold…secure financing.
Who is going to finance this grabage of Paul Webbs? What Black actors, big names, will he be able to get ? This is a senesitive subject and MLK is still a fairly recent historical figure? Will the public accept this?
I think the answer is no and none.

Webb needs to broaden himself, challenge…try making a movie about Black suburbanites/White ones to… some drama.

I have no issue with this. Show it all, not just the good sides of the man. I want to see both the good and the bad, the whole man.

I realize that black folks want to believe that MLK was all positive with no negatives, but you gotta face reality.

There will never be another Martin Luther King! True or not based off facts this movie on rewriting history should never even consider to be made only to cloud black peoples judgement on Martin Luther King. No ones perfect, Does this really matter what he did behind closed doors? I highly respect Martin Luther King and are grateful for his tremendous contributing to the civil rights movement for us black people. A man who knew he was not going to get to the promise land with us but made large sacrifices so we can be free of the old “jim crow laws”. But some blacks still knock him down worrying about his skeletons in the closet should be ashame now the time to ban against this piece of junk movie of Paul Webb’s and show unity like Martin Luther King did for us showed strong unity. We who really knows the history book a lot of “paragraphs” in those books need to be rewritten on the truth.
