From HuffingtonPost.com:

‘Precious’ star Gabourey Sidibe visited Oprah Friday to promote her movie, in which she plays an obese teenager who is twice impregnated by her father. Gabby’s own Harlem adolescence was not nearly as troubled but she did struggle for years with her body image.

Oprah pointed out that director Lee Daniels has said Gabby speaks “like a white girl from the Valley” and is so confident that she is “either in denial about her physicality or from another planet.”

“It’s something I’ve had to work at. My first diet started when I was six years old,” Gabby said. “I’ve never been a small girl. One day I had to sit down with myself and decide that I loved myself no matter what my body looked like and what other people thought about my body.”

@NANSTROKER- People have long attributed weight gain amongst black people to DNA,thyroids, etc…So now everytime we see and unhealthy person, “Oh, they must have thyroid problems”…I dont buy it either as TeachThemCulture wisely stated. whats wrong with people admitting that there is NOTHING to love about yourself when u are speeding up the death process by over eating and NOT exercising? So what, everytime we see a cigarette smoker, “oh they must have a lighter problem”, or when se see an alcoholic “oh they must have a drinking glass problem”? And I use smoking and drinking as the example because obesity ranks right up ther with them to me. They are all detremental to your health YET you CAN do something about it. As I stated before, Mo’Nique was so happy being a BBW, but look at her now…she has told every news program/magazine that will listen that she has lost ‘X’ amount of weight and shes STILL TRYING TO DROP MORE. Im not saying I have a problem with big or larger people, he*ll Im 5ft8 and some change and I weigh 186lbs…My size is attributed to DNA to a certain extent which is exactly why I try to keep myself healthy because I know I have those southern folks down the line that have huge hips and thighs etc…so im not only fighting the battle of unhealthy foods distributed, but im also fighting my natural body structure to be healthy inside as well as my outer appearance. We can only blame DNA and thyroids so far…And by the way there are things that can be done if you have a thyroid problem…So if someone has an alcoholic parent, and they become alcoholics do we look the other way and attribute that to DNA??? I think not…

    NANASTROKER….very wise words.

As far as genetics…for a gene pool to have their genetics altered so you have noticeable, physically phenotypic manifested traits, usually takes 4-10,000 years. Slavery that occured in the Western Hemisphere between the 16th-19th century was not 500 GENERATIONS AGO….American slavery did not occur in Bronze Age times….so how ould Africans go from being these healthy, fit people to obese medical wrecks in a couple generations? Notice most Caribbean slavery descendents dont have the same medical problems as Afro-Americans (partly because most people around the world still eat food that actually grows from the Earth)

So as far as the genetics of Black people altering to make us sick and susceptable to obesity…..Im not buying it

Well this is fraudulently being diagnosed as DNA traits or our Ancestrial genes so I will read from A book I have called “Before the Mayflower, A History of Black America” published 1969 by Johnson Co.(Johnson of Ebony/Jet) author Lerone Bennet

In this book he has ammassed research and I will quote:
Timbuktu, during Askia’s reign, was a city of some 100K persons filled to the top with gold and dazzling women. One of the most fabled and exotic cities of the world, the Sudanese metropolis was celebrated for its luxury and gaiety.
Social life was well organized. The old, sick, the infirm were cared for. Spinsters were rare; prostitution was unknown.

Now I share this because they speak of having the cure for the flu and malaria in those times(15th century BC) and the architect and the produce we ate and the daily functionings…..now I want to coorelate this with this article in the fact that when U look at the art on the walls of the Pyramid and the statues and arts….U will never see an overweight out of shape person because our diet was like none other
Let’s fast forward 2 America and 75-100 after the inset of slavery…..we toiled 14+ hours but we had no diet…..they infested our DNA with SLOP and we have modernized slave food N2 soul food this is why this young lady has been at war with herself and her appearance since she was 6….along with Oprah and many other Black Women that favor MAMMY(fat out of shape black slave maid) your body mass is 70% WATER NOT FOOD!!
    So please Eat 2 Live

we (Black people) need to stop using “Im big” or “Im thick” or “Im a BBW” as an excuse to be reckless overeaters. Food is for vitamins, proteins and carbs to refresh your blood, muscles and immune system….food is not water, you dont need it every hour. Especially food created in a lab from synthetic compounds.

cont..Many of us (especially those who grew up in the city) never even heard about organically grown fruits and vegetables until we hit about 30 yo and by then, we are so used to eating KFC, you couldn’t pay us to eat freshly grown vegetables and fruits. Listen, even skinny people are unhealthy so its not a matter of what you look like, but if 30-80% of your diet is made up of processed foods, then you’re setting yourself up for health problems down the road. Getting sick doesn’t have to go hand in hand with getting old. This is the biggest bunch of BS we have been told our entire lives.

  • 11-21-2009 2:40 pm

@CaliFemme, you make some very important points and I agree with most of what you said. However, I take issue with you when you attribute our lack of good health to our DNA (I realize you said CAN be and not definite) when it can be directly related to the foods we eat. Many of us coming (especially

I dont understand why people are so worried about everybody but themselves in this sense. If a person lets themselves go, then its none of your business. You don’t know what that person could be going through and you trying to break their spirit certainly isn’t helping either. Why can we put so much energy into tearing each other down, running the streets, and being so hateful–but we can’t just focus on ourselves to become educated/better and leave a positive mark in the world. Its amazing we can worry about another persons weight but we can’t worry about whether or not they are STD free or not. People are willing to bring in all these bastard misfits in the world but are more focused on weight and beauty?

it takes sooooo much energy to be hateful and to dodge karma but it takes little to nothing to mind your business and focus on YOU and how YOU can make YOUR life better/brighter.

    Live and do you

ok a lot of ppl have weight issues no matter how hard they try… she said she started a diet when she was 6!!! does that not sound like she was trying to lose weight from the beginning… a lot of black ppl and females in my family have hormone and thyroid problems that cause us to gain weight… i ran track for 5 years i worked out at school and when i got home because i was decicated… i still gained 10lbs every fu*cking year (yes i am mad about it). so until u kno what you talkin bout when it comes to weight issues do us a favor and shut up please

I see nothing wrong with loving who you are..BUT when it comes to health, physical appearance and your LIFE in general, im opposed to this acceptance of overtly obese people. I dont hate them, dont despise them, not at all. My point is, we need to stop making people think its ok to let yourself go, gain however much weight with no exercise, no healthy eating habits, and not listening to those that tell you different about the lifestyle. This particular young lady is way too big for her height, race and age. Black people already struggle genetically with many different things, are highest rated amongst high blood pressure/diabetes and heart disease…all of these can be due to DNA, so why add to it with purposefully being obese and accepting it as ’self love’? What happened to health these days? Why did we let the likes of Mo’Nique who started the whole BBW love yourself fat craze, who by the way is now TRYING TO GET SMALLER!, talk us into settling at the age of 12 with being unhealthy? The girl starring in ‘precious’ can definately love herself for WHO she is, but WHO she is, is NOT an obese person, that does NOT determine who she is…it only says WHAT she is….She needs to take steps to becoming a more healthy person..I would never allow my daughters to get to these massive weight proportions and just tell them “oh its ok to be fat, unhealthy, unappealing in appearance sweeties as long as you love yourself!” People please…

  • 11-21-2009 10:41 am

lmao at the fact the director thought she was in denial or from another planet because she loves herself for who she is.

  • 11-21-2009 9:45 am

Everyone think you are suppose to be small all the damn time when everyone is made differently theres nothing wrong with being big or skinny…woman need to learn to love htmeselve and stop thinking what they see on tv is what they suppose to be.
