T. Charles Erickson, The New York Times

In life, the playwright August Wilson had an all-but-official rule: No white directors for major productions of his work, which was one reason that a film was never made from his 10 plays about African-American life in the 20th century. “Fences,” one of the two awarded the Pulitzer Prize, foundered in Hollywood because of his insistence on a black director.

Yet in the years since Wilson died in 2005, an increasing number of white directors have staged his plays, and last week came a milestone: “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” which opened on April 16, is the first Broadway revival of a Wilson play since his death and the first ever on Broadway with a white director, the Tony Award-winning Bartlett Sher.

I think the revival of his plays, this one in particular, is great… as far as his unofficial rule about non-African American directors, I totally get it. I think it would be an important component, however, I think that whoever the Broadway director was would’ve taken great precautions to make him proud. In fact, the real life juxtaposition of race relations in production that parrallels race relations in his work could strengthen its success, by demonstrating that these issues are still prevolent, while encouraging people of all races to become invovled in advocating and practicing racial equality. Its 2009, let’s unite.

I think it’s really sad that by simply insisting on a director of colour, his movies were shut down. I think he was making a statement on how segregated the entertainment industry is and that he was trying to promote a kind of entertianment affirmative action.
I think it’s sad that his fight died with him.

Theres no such thing as a light skinned black african.Light skinned black comes from race mixing and forceing mixed race children to be seen as black only by the one drop rul.this is where we get the light skin black from, This rule was created during the time of slavery in our country. The rule basically stated that a person with as little as one drop of black was black no matter how light they were. But neggggress love to keep the rule alive by claming anyone with black blood.
