black-barbie

From the NY Daily News:

Barbie from the block got mixed reviews Wednesday from city girls inspecting the newest spin on the old-school toy.

“So In Style” dolls, a fresh take on the black Barbie, hit store shelves this week, featuring a group of plastic friends sporting shiny bling, big earrings and fancy sneakers.

Many of the city girls liked the dolls – Grace, Kara and Trichelle – but some felt the Mattel toy company went too far with the rap-inspired details.

“Not all black people like hip hop,” said Barbara Mootoo, 15, of Manhattan, looking at Kara’s silver rope chain necklace. “They gave her a chain like a 50Cent video.”

Tyaine Danclaire, 15, of the Bronx, liked Trichelle’s straight, long hair because it looked like “a weave,” but she thought the idea “was sorta racist.”

“They say black girls are ghetto with the gold earrings, with the big bling; I don’t agree with that,” she said.

Mattel said veteran Barbie designer Stacey McBride-Irby, an African-American mother of two, created the dolls so her kids could have toys that look like their neighborhood friends.

I think the dolls are beautiful! You can take the dolls either way it’s up to you to decide if you want to view it in a positive or negative way. What if they made the dolls with short nappy hair everyone would find that racist. I love the fact that the dolls have thick beautiful long silky hair. It looks like me and my daughter except we’re light-skinned.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GORGEOUSnGLAM/ GORGEOUSnGLAM

I don’t think it’s bad because she’s holding a little girl’s hand remember Barbie had a little sister named “Skipper”. Maybe the little girl is her little sister or niece? I like the names too; I’m glad they didn’t name the dolls anything like “Shaniqua” or “Quasia” or something then I would’ve felt like they were being racist or stereotypical.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Cheron32/ Cheron32

Oh yeah! this is a definate stereotype. Stereotypes often stem from racism. You can’t necessarily have one without the other. If they happen make a black Ken doll with cornrows wearing a wife beater, smokin a cig, then we will know whats up…

No one said any thing when the generation girls came out with Michelle, the dark skined, silver wearing, baggie clothing barbie came out. I feel like this, we complain when we dont get a ethnic doll, but when we do it still is not good enough for us. What can we do no matter what not every one will be happy. Lets just give the race card a f -in rest ok and be happy we can have toys at all, some people would be happy with a broke trailer trash beer drinking nappy haired white barbie or a doll with no legs just be thankfull we are able to have these toys.

I like it. The little girl shown with the black barbie is the 2009 version of e thbarbie and her little sister that came out years ago. The difference is young black girls have a barbie they can actually relate better to than white barbie. There are some little white kids that play with black barbies aswell and it’s nice that they can see different cultures and respect everyone for their differences. I think it’s a nice idea, I don’t understand how is it racist when the creator is a black woman with two children of her own? The people being offended were young children and they need to be sat down by an intelligent, exprienced adult with a greater understanding of the world around them. Someone who can define ‘actual’ racism. It is not wise to cry wolf by throwing that word around so freely.

We’re trying to get rid of the ‘rap, hip hop’ mentality. We don’t want to spoon feed it to the next generation. Sister you got this one WRONG! You should have dressed them in a school uniform taking piano, or violin lessons. Or you could have kept the regular clothing but LEAVE OUT THE BLING and fancy sneakers (it only points the way to materialism)! BE MORE COGNIZANT OF THE MESSAGES YOU’RE GIVING OUR LITTLE GIRLS. We don’t want them focused on chasing dollars & using others to get ‘things’, we want them to be self sufficient. Because they grow up to big girls and birth little boys and girls. Hip hop don’t have the good intentions yet. Wait for the good lyrics to come back instead of selling sex. What are you going to do next feature the Beyonce ‘Mommie & me’ matching outfits? Gross! We’re trying give our daughters dignity not lead them to prositition!

I find it hard to believe that there are girls out there thinking that these dolls are racist. Newsone must have went around and planted the seed in someones mind to get this crap. If there isn’t a story, make one.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/armandx99/ armandx99

C’mon. We have Ghetto Diva Barbie here. Next will be Stuck up, Sub-urban Barbie. It’ll go on and on until we have our own doll making company that caters to us. It’s like we want to make our disdain the problem of a company that obviously was never truly geared to providing us with the products we want to buy. Then, instead of refusing to buy what little is provided, we suck it up, complaining about it all the way. If you have a problem with stereotypical Barbie, commit to stop buying the dolls.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Rei777/ Rei777

Man, you can’t make black people happy. A few years back, we were complaining that black Barbie was just a white Barbie with paint and that our girls looked nothing like that. Now, it’s too authentic. I’ll admit that the rap theme is probably a bit overkill. But, tell me what would make little black girls happy. No one seems to have an answer! (That’s why I’m glad I’m a dude! We didn’t have this problem with G.I. Joe because all of them ended up getting shot anyway! Lol!)

THIS IS NOT RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STOP THE BULLSHYT We all know that racism is alive and well but damn THIS. IS. NOT. IT. come on now… buy different clothes for your Barbie if you don’t like the ones she’s wearing b/c their “too Hip Hop” who gives a shyt and for the record the majority of black girls in this age range playing with barbies do like hip hop and r&B as well as pop I was once one of those girls Uggh this article was so unnecessary

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/KarmelKz/ KarmelKz

I like this doll. I think that it’s very cute. I was thinking, when I was a kid I had the white Barbie and also Cristy (black doll- Barbie’s friend I think) and Ken and Lord knows by the time I was done with them they were all a mess. I can’t tell you how many bald headed Barbies I had. I don’t know maybe kids are different now. Kids like to change their hair, clothes, etc. anyway. Then if you really don’t like the doll just don’t buy it and explain to your child why. Problem solved.

Calm down black people…there’s no racism here! I think the doll is cute and would buy it for the little black girl in my life and think nothing of it. Don’t be so touchy! I know it’s hard since alot of white people have been coming at us with their racist bull and we’re a little sensitive…but it’s just a doll. That’s all it is…a doll. One that I wish had been available when I was a little girl.

Even the white people who work at Mattel think black females are fake and phony. These dolls are a reflection of what our society sees and how many black women would love to see themselves. So, don’t shoot the messenger!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Das_Blaq/ Das_Blaq

Where else are these guys going to get their information on Black women from? Start telling rappers to show Black women in a more positive light then and stop dancing to lyrics that call you all sorts of foul and disgusting names. Take the doll and like it. You’re grandmother had to make a doll from a burlap sack with rocks for brains and cotton stuffed inside it’s body.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/spencermiller/ spencermiller

We need to stop calling everything we see racist, there are more important matters we should be dealing with. If you don’t like the way the doll looks don’t buy it.

i dont think this is racist. i think dat black people should be proud to have there own identity, so what if if they put a chain and sneakers and urban accessories on da doll, us as black peopleshould be proud to accept that as a trade mark of the black community and not be ashamed.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Blakberri36/ Blakberri36

I have to say that we as AFRICAN AMERICANS are just never satisified!!! First we were upset because barbie was not black. Now that shes black , were upset becuase she looks like most of the young AFRICAN AMERICAN girls today. Please stop throwing the racist card at every little thing. African americans always want to talk about what They do to us. Look at how WE treat each other. There is more black on black crime than any other race. Lets take self inventory before we start trying to make others change!!!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Fine_52/ Fine_52

I have to agree with Ms. Blakberri36. We as a people are not satified and also the doll was at least taken from a Black Person & that’s what she preceived, if anything you need to check with the designer “Stacey McBride-Irby. African American’s have to remember that Retail is only trying to appeal to segment of the population which is usually 20 to 30 yr. olds and their kids. Just ask that generation how they feel about Barbie and now we have a Barbie “can’t we all just get along”.
As African American’s we complain when they don’t have enough for us then when White America wants to give us something to embrace by a Black Person then we complain. We are never satified. But that can be a good thing also because we don’t become complacent with what life wants to throw at us and we come up with the bright ideas.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/HOTSHYT_4RYLL/ HOTSHYT_4RYLL

lol…my people… does it make it okay now because you know a “black woman” designed it??? Sometimes i believe that racism comes from us instigating or making emphasis on to much… nOT saying do not think deep.. but there is more important things going on in the world..

O.M.G. my people, my people, what’s the problem now? I was born in 1966,and back then we wished 4 an image of ourselves. All the supermodels where white with long blond hair.. There was no Lena Horne,Josephine Baker,Eartha Kitt dolls for us to enjoy. I also have a 17 year old daughter and I remember when I couldn’t find a doll for her. So I welcome the new improved barbies.
