Good for TP. I think this was such a selfless & commendable deed. However, people will find a way to criticize this too (smh). At the end of the day, I don’t see any other entertainers, producers, athletes or other celebrities making these sort of contributions. It is all about sowing seeds & giving back and because of that there is no wonder why Tyler Perry has acquired the success he has.

that’s nice and all, but can anyone name anything relevant the NAACP has done in the last, ohhhhh, 30 years or so?

i mean, hey, he gave $1 million, and i thinks that’s cool. unfortunately, one of the reasons why the NAACP is always begging for new membership is because they’re now seen as a group of screw ups at worst, and irrelevant at best.

and to sketch, who asked what spike lee would say, he’d probably let his website do some of the talking:

again, good for tyler and at least it’s SOMETHING. at least i could say that he’s using his God awful television shows and insipid movies where he dresses in drag for a semi-good cause.

In my opinion, just a cheap attempt of proving his blackness. Its a lot easier for him to donate 1m to the most stagnant, barren black organization in the country than it is for him to change the content, vision and direction of his movies while at the same time, gaining some “hood points.” No doubt the NAACP will promote every and all past and future TP projects, which will naturally translate into increased movie and dvd sales. That million might come back 5x. A very savvy business investment in my estimation. I wonder why the NAACP never voiced any concerns about the prominence of Madea in our modern day culture? How come no outcry about the stereotypes continually used as a source of laughter in “meet the clowns” (is that supposed to be browns?) Ah, it must have been in hopes of receiving a donation such as this one!

And to piggy back on Smack_u_silly’s comments, Spike NEVER denigrated us. I didn’t like all his movies, but he has NEVER had some stepin Fetchit, Amos and Andy type character in his movies, or at least NEVER as the focal character of the movie!!! TP has been built up to prominence to serve as an ANTI Spike Lee, who sparked thoughts of DOING THE RIGHT THING, and FIGHTING THE POWER!!!

Hey all….I just have this to say about the situation: I think it is good that Tyler Perry made the 1 million dollar donation. However, I think that for many other black millionaires that have not really donated as much at on time based on their success is almost embarassing. This is not to say that there may be those that have donated anonymously and decided recgonition is not important. We have a rich history as people of the world and to think that 1 African American who has “arrived” can put more money in a cause that helped our people than his predecessors. I believe that if his donation is based on his personal belief as well as to make a statement, it is to remind us to support the cause that the NAACP was orginally founded. Remember our leaders that have gone before us and carry the dream that they have always wanted for us. We should be glad to assist in any way possible and if this is heart felt then it is to the benefit of all people in the world.

To those who say more rich people should do the same all i have to say to you is THEY ACCEPT SMALL DONATIONS TOO!!!! WHY DONT YOU GIVE A SMALL DONATION?

The positive in this Mr. Perry donated 1Million Dollars, the negative is he donated it to the wrong group. The NAACP has done literally nothing over the course of 10-20yrs to better our race.

Case in point:

NAACP continues to use tired old methods, with the same tired old leaders, who instead of looking to advance our race are only looking to advance their own social & financial status.

As i’ve stated in just about every post I wrote WE the African Americans are a people without a country. The richest continent in the world belongs to our race, but its stolen children refuse to help, assist or even care to learn anything or do anything for it or our Brothers & Sisters. NAACP should have since the 60′s & 70′s made it their mission to reunite us so that WE could be using its resources, We could be educating our Brother & Sisters over there. NAACP with all its Billions of dollars over the years could very easily opened our schools, businesses etc.

With all the natural resources Africa has we would not be at the bottom of the food change right now. But here we are coming on 2010, our children are still being taught only African American history, are still learning to go school, go to college, go work for the system.

I commend Mr. Perry based on the fact that he DID donate to a black-based organization.

For other blacks such as Berry Gordy, Suzanne De Passe, Oprah, P. Ditty, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Russell Simmons, Earl Graves, Jamie Fox and other wealthy blacks as a given example, this is an all-call…WHERE is your direct donation?

When we look at wealthy “moguls” such as Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen—they ALL have a “shared group mentality.”

Blacks in the public eye can learn MUCH from their mind-set.

For the common thread that these three share in addition to amassed and on-going generation wealth? They are all Jews.

Many in our black race just adamantly REFUSE to “get it.” As though they are “ashamed” to OPENLY rise their own people to rise UP. Wonder what they are afraid of?

One of the BP members made a comment about why other entertainers haven’t done the same. That answer is very simple WHY should they give their money away to people who are just going to use it to enrich their lives. In all the yrs that the NAACP has been in existence and all the money they’ve received WHY are our communities in the state they are in today? Why are entertainers speaking for our race? Why is the economic gap between Black & White still so huge? Why are our children still being taught the same lies? Why are we still so separated as a race?

Bill Gates for example has enough money to actually put an end to AIDS in Africa but instead what does he do, lets donate a million dollars and send condoms overseas or a just say no campaign. With with his money over 30 billion dollarss you can take 5 Billion and open at the very least 300 Hospitals, 300 Schools & create close to 500,000 new jobs in Africa. There is no Shared Group Mentality its Business.

Unfortunately, though an old-guard civil rights group (1909?) NAACP has not been “visible” in black communities for several years now. I recall receiving an invitation to “join” NAACP and let us just say that my response was less than favorable to this group. I have yet to receive another invitation from this organization. Yes, blacks on the whole, are behind the 8-ball in terms of being inclusive of the “new” society, there remains disparity in black folks and the digital-divide and unless we all “keep banging on that BEAST?” Continual attempts will be ongoing to marginalize/annihilate our black people.

It is extremely easy to sit at home and pontificate on the NAACP or Tyler Perry’s strategic donation. It is much more difficult to actually join an organization that’s sole purpose is the betterment of the African American community, whatever that organization may be. Granted we ALL have differing opinions and points of view and they are all valid to us. Until we can set aside differences and actually focus on a common goal we will remain lost. If the NAACP had younger members with a vision and the fortitude to work until the goal has been reached what else can you expect to happen? An old organization with old members and old ideas. Don’t complain or judge just change it AND if you don’t you have no reason to complain.

So lets factor the racism out….no more lynchings….Jim Crow is dead….we have Equal Opportunity….and last A Black President. So what is the Reason of the NAACP? according 2 America and people on this page we have everything we need so why does the NAACP still try 2 be relevant?

while I was pondering I always had A crazy Idea N my head of how I would donate sssaaaayyyy….$1 million tax free Dollars without the fanfare….I would create a Petition and go 2 the poorest Neighborhoods, interact with those people, gain and verify information on that Person/Family….take this Petition with their info on it and Dissect the people with vices(drugs, alcohol) and began 2 do background checks on the people left thereafter….Qualify these people bye adding personal notes of either Being Business savvy or what have you….take this information and about 10 assistants 2 start my DONATION process of REALLY DONATING AND CONCRETELY ENSURING MYSELF OF THE WHEREABOUTS OF MY DONATION(S)….simple easy 2 do may take 2-4 months tops if you can get the right people that SHARES your vision and wants 2 see it come 2 fruition, U can start 2 launch new Businesses and help the person(s) you choose 2 assist with the Start-up fees(Donation). Now you can dispose of your Money in this way and later come back after you research the people with vices from the petition and began 2 assist them….

This media deplored mass manipulation program is made possible because the media form for us our image of the world and essentially everything we know—or think we know—about events outside our own neighborhood or circle of acquaintances comes to us via our daily newspaper, our weekly news magazine, our radio, or our television. By employing carefully developed psychological techniques, the mass media guide our thoughts and opinions. The U.S. Government has an extensive history of using the media to conduct mass propaganda manipulation programs to influence the perception of its citizens to meet its governmental objectives. Given that the nineteen sixties were a period of massive black rebellion and unrest that eroded the American global image and increasingly placed the nation’s peace and stability in dire jeopardy and perhaps most particularly because the nations top sociologist and psychologist knew that those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. This quite logically necessitated that the U.S. Government employ these same proven methods of mass psychological manipulation against its entire African American population– Its greatest civil rights organizers, protestors, and fighters of white institutionalized racism as a means of maintaining its white dominance and control.
Not only does this massive governmental psychological manipulation campaign negatively impacts Blacks self perceptions, but it also provides a more socially acceptable way to exploit and suppressed African Americans. Its deplorable imageries of Black Americans also to create a shift of victimization that changes the root problem of racism in America to be due to Black’s behavior rather than White’s proclivity for racism. Therefore engendering prejudiced distorted perceptions and acrimonious beliefs about African Americans that are designed to makes the nation and the entire world insensitive to their plight, tranquilizes efforts on their behalf, lessens pressure for social change on their behalf, and makes any serious criticism of White racism almost impossible today. Therefore fostering a national setting of where in which Blacks are more easily exploited and ultimately consensually suppressed.
It creates a false justification for the legal system’s mistreatment of African Americans wherein they are disproportionately incarcerated, given stiffer sentences, and are more likely than other racial groups to be treated brutally, beaten, and fired upon by police officers while they are unarmed. These injustices now goes ignored because the perception has subconsciously become that it’s all now justified. When contempt of Blacks is made to appear to be justifiable, it is the fiercest and most effective type of racism because its witnesses, bystanders, and even world audiences will sit by idly allowing African Americans to be brutally mistreated under the belief that it is justified. This is what America’s mass propaganda specialist Dr. Edward Bernays referred to as “engineering consent”.
Our Responsibility
Once we Black people come to recognize this psychosocial treatment of us, it is our inescapable responsibility to do whatever is necessary to break this control. We must shrink from nothing in combating this evil power that has fastened its deadly grip on our people and is injecting its lethal poison into our people’s minds and souls. If our race fails to destroy it, it certainly will destroy our race.
Those are the facts of how Black people are being manipulated by media control in America. We must not remain silent on this most important of issues. The white elite’s control of the American mass media is the single most important fact of life, not just in America, but in the whole world today. There is nothing more dangerous to the future of our people.
By permitting the white elites to continue their total control of our news and entertainment media we are doing more than merely giving them a decisive influence on our communities; we also are giving them virtual control of the minds and souls of our children, whose attitudes and ideas are shaped more by white controlled television and films than by parents, schools, or any other influence.

I am actually starting to feel sorry for Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama.
