With Comic-Con closing this week, Newsone has decided to bring you the Top Ten Black Superheroes in comic books. In the age of Obama, where getting more diverse is status quo, comic books have become more saavy than ever. X-men, the trailblazing comic book, has added several African and African-American characters over the last decade, for example. These aren’t just black people with superpowers, these are educated luminaries with powerful gifts to change the world or destroy it. They aren’t just juiced-up mega humans; they are in a sense, demi-gods. Intelligent, well-written, off-the-cuff and ultra-powerful. Here’s our list:

10. Storm

storm

With the map of Africa on her face, silver hair and della robbia blue eyes, Ororo is one of the most powerful and (as her name suggests) beautiful mutants in the X-men pantheon. The vain reigning queen consort of Wakanda (a fictional African nation), after marrying King T’Challa, is known as Black Panther. Storm puts rapper Trina to shame as the baddest… well, you know. As a mutant with the psionic ability to control weather, an expert in espionage, and one of the most skilled fighters, she was one of the first black super heroines to grace comic book pages.

9. Black Panther

black panther

Praised for its spectacular and sophisticated wit in faintly ultramodern technologically-advanced, xenophobic Africana milieu, the tale of a Wakanda reigning emperor and his adventures is one of the best written in the Marvel universe. Black Panther, the first black contemporary superhero is one of epic proportions.

8. Frenzy

frenzy

Black characters are rarely in comics and often a character would be introduced and later given the shaft depending on the writers, either by fatal comic book death or a long excursion somewhere. Frenzy, the mutant supervillainess with the steel-hard skin and super strength is a tough-as-nails badass able to exchange blows with Rouge and She-Hulk without breaking a sweat.

7. Bling!

bling!

Okay, so maybe that bling-bling No Limit crew phrase had too many followers when Salvador Larroca and Peter Milligan created Roxy Washington, daughter of hip-hop artists Roy “Daddy Libido” Washington and Angel “Sexy Mutha” Depres. Whatever. Working under Gambit, this durable young lady can project diamond shards from her diamond hide.

6. Gentle

gentle

This guy makes our list because he is one of the few depictions of a non-hostile, motivated black male superhero in comic books. Why is this important? Well, it just so happens that this African mutant pacifist can provisionally amplify his muscle mass to hyper-extreme echelons to the extent of lifting 100 tons, but does need the help of vibranium tattoos titivating his body to keep his powers under control.

5. Darwin

darwin-x-men

The Afro-Latino chameleon, and one of the X-men’s most powerful mutants, does whatever he can to survive, and is constantly in a state of evolution, like his code name suggests. He is a victim of reactive evolution. If there is a fire, his skin may turn to steel. If he is in danger of drowning, he grows fish gills. If it’s dark, he has night-vision. If he’s in an Ivy League classroom, he can increase his intelligence. If we say he’s awesome, he’s awesome.

4. Prodigy

prodigy

The smarty-pants lost his powers in an Armageddon free-for-all, but before that he had the telepathic aptitude to absorb and mimic the knowledge and skills from the minds of people in his close proximity and the ability to know opponents coming attacks, that even allowed him to duke it out with Wolverine! With self-compulsory mental blocks, he prefers to learn naturally which hindered his abilities, but don’t count him out just because he was depowered: he has knowledge from Beast and trade secrets from Professor X as well as martial art skills from that Hugh Jackman guy…

3. Angel Salvadore

Angel

So, how does one explain this without getting others offended? She’s a common human fly that happens to be a total hottie in X-men world. With the capability to vibrate her wings at turbo, she could produce an ear-splitting ultrasonic sound and a nasty gestation period; she is one of the most fabulous mutants to explode on the pages.

2. M

M

She’s basically the Wonder Woman of Marvel Comics’ X-men. Are they using her correctly? We don’t know but she’s got a great back story that involves a dead boyfriend, twin quarrels and family issues up all over the place. She is a genius and also has a perfect memory, intuitive dexterity, superhuman strength and invulnerability, a healing factor, can fly at supersonic speeds, and is a pretty powerful telepath.

1. Synch

Synch

M’s dead ex-boyfriend and fearless leader of Generation X was one of the most powerful black mutants ever and died saving civilians from a live bomb. His bio-engertic aura allowed him to “synch” with other mutants in his vicinity and duplicate the effect of their power, and often had better control of their powers better than they could.

Honorable Mentions:

1. Cipher

cipher

The dreadlocked vixen is running from a certain “he” and won’t give up the ghost about who “he,” is, but luckily for her that this adroit mole has the capability of full-spectrum invisibility and absolute stealth, mentally or physically and can even phase through solid objects.

2. Bishop

Bishop

Hands down, the toughest X-man we’ve seen in years, with his signature M over his right eye. More powerful than his baby sister Shard, who can blast photon lazers, the time travel nomad can absorb all types of energy at one time and is superb armed and unarmed combat as well as being a studious marksman.

3. Static Shock

StaticShock1

Virgil Hawkins, was your average high school student until he came into contact with an experimental mutagen that allowed him to possess the power to organize and maneuver electromagnetism and was named after the first black to go to law school as well as the lead plaintiff in the fight to desegregate the University of Florida College of Law.

4. Vixen

Vixen

Jet’s Beauty Of The Week, anyone? Vixen can facilitate her power to make direct contact with gaia’s morphogenetic field which grants her power to mimic the abilities of nearby animals and can hold on to those powers. She has demonstrated the debilitating shock of an electric eel, having the strength of a bull elephant, the agility of a monkey, the sonar of a bat, the speed of a cheetah, the swimming acrobatics of a dolphin and the ability to spit venom a la a cobra.

5. Orpheus

orpheus

Constantly denied as one of the unforgettable superheroes, Orpheus was a martial artist and dancer, capable of blending into shadows via stealth suit.

6. Cecilia Reyes

Cecilia_Reyes

An Afro-Latina trauma surgery medical doctor from the Bronx, Reyes can generate a psioplasmic bio-field around her body that can protect her and others and be used offensively as bladed weapons that can puncture the human form. Not bad, eh?

7. Blade

BladeComic

People get very offended when you put Blade on a list of greatest superheroes because he’s essentially a vampire killer. With a world overran by Edward Cullen-types, isn’t it fair to say that he should be honored as one of the greatest superheroes ever? The day walking dhampir martial artist is an accomplished jazz trumpeter, an expert swordsman and marksman and has a rapid healing factor that makes it easy to hunt his prey at all times.

8. John Stewart, The Green Lantern

greenlantern

One of the first black superheroes ever given superior powers and the only black to wear the powerful oan power ring—the most powerful weapon in the DC universe—he can greet solid-light constructs unlimited by his willpower and imagination… which is dope. Why? Well, he tried creating a planet from scratch, and even the ring couldn’t keep up.

9. Tombstone

Tombstone

Why is he listed when he’s not even a hero, huh? Well, every villain is as good as the superhero. Besides; let’s face it, as an African-American albino with razor-sharp barbed teeth, able to withstand bullets and toxic gas with superhuman strength and agility, he’s one of the strongest depictions of all of the colors in African Americans.

10. Falcon

falcon

The “black one” in the Avengers, he is one of the coolest as well. He has the ability to control birds, and see through their eyes. In one issue, he noted: “I have over six billion pairs of eyes in the United States alone,” which makes him an awesome spy. He’s also an expert gymnast and flies with off-the-chain wing gliders.

WTF is up with you folks?

    Where The Hell is Spawn!!!????

And it seems that a lot of the black characters listed are very derivative and always have powers of copying or using other people’s powers…

Also, the huge number of spelling mistakes in this article kept throwing me off at certain points…

And yes, Tombstone should not be on there… What about Steel (John Henry Irons)? War Machine (James Rhodes)? Rocky Rocket? Luke Cage(Power Man)?

WTH is wrong with yall? Black Panther should have been number 1, not number 9…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Johnny_Walker/ Johnny_Walker

    Yea..@AfricanSpeech

The list is incomplete, BUT…at least they made a list. lol
Steel is forgettable, b/c Shaq ruined it and every movie he’s ever been in.
Can’t forget Luke Cage though…that’s inexcusable.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Anthropological/ Anthropological

Storm Blade or Green Lantern should have been number one! Power Man, Static Shock or Bishop could have been number 2!
Speaking of the Black Panther, I can’t wait until the movie comes out!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BlkSuperHero928/ BlkSuperHero928

Damn, how come “I” didn’t make the list? My power is dousing gasoline on abusive pimps and other “worthy” criminals and setting them ablaze. I kid, I kid. I wonder why they never mentioned Adam Brashear The Blue Marvel, dude knocked Sentry into orbit, carried an aircraft carrier across the ocean like it was a balloon and whooped that ass on all of the Avengers. He is said to be in the same league as The Hulk, he is Marvel’s answer to Superman. Look him up. Oh, and Bishop should be number 1. He got his freak on with one of the X-men’s baddest enemies Deathbird, broke off Sabertooth, and since the X-men didnt appreciate this brother while he was stuck in space with Deathbird, later events show him turning his back on the X-men, and I think he is a villain. Yea, Bishop is a G. I want to write a few stories involving him, maybe he can team up with the Punisher.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BlkSuperHero928/ BlkSuperHero928

But that was effed up when the shaved Bishop’s hair, another deciding factor.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AfricanSpeech/ AfricanSpeech

Yeah, they forgot Blue Marvel too…

But as an aside, everybody beats up on Sentry anyway so I dom’t know… She Hulk clocked him too… He’s kinda like the Joxer of Marvel Universe

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AfricanSpeech/ AfricanSpeech

Spawn would own all those characters and then some…

How can someone leave Spawn off the list? There should a law or penalty for that kind of crime? Is it on the books? It oughta be a crime somewhere…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AfricanSpeech/ AfricanSpeech

Oh man… I forgot Bronze Tiger… The best fighter in the DC Universe and the only dude Batman is scared to fight…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Anthropological/ Anthropological

Yo… i just looked the Blue Marvel… he was created by Kevin Grevioux the brother that co-wrote Underworld… He is the guy who played the muscular lycan in the movie!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AfricanSpeech/ AfricanSpeech

    Blue Marvel

    http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=17398

“It’s the story of Marvel’s first black superhero. He was the most powerful and the most popular superhero around for a period of three or four years back in the late 1950s early 1960s. Think of how pre-’Civil War’ Captain America was lauded in the Marvel Universe or how Superman is hailed in Metropolis or throughout the DC Universe and that was the popular status that the Blue Marvel enjoyed during this time period.

“However, he wore a costume that completely covered his entire body so no one knew what he looked like underneath. But when it was discovered that he was actually a black man, he was asked to cease operating as a hero and retire by President John F. Kennedy. The reason being, that at the time, Kennedy and his brother Bobby were desperately trying to push forth Civil Rights and they knew that if the world found out that the Blue Marvel, a being of incalculable power, was actually a Negro, that would set their Civil Rights plan back. Maybe even kill it all together. And they knew that if America was to move forward and evolve socially, that could not happen.

“Not wanting to upset the apple cart, and realizing how important this was, the Blue Marvel complied with the President’s executive order and stands down.”

    Now ain’t that a B?

Really crappy list…Black Panther, Storm and Bishop should have been at the top of the list. I dont even know who most of those characters are…pretty much one hit wonders…most of who were offed within the first couple issues. I know the Gen X mutants (M, Sync and Cecilia Reyes) are all pretty much dead killed off by the phalanx lol.

And how do you forget Spawn, War machine, Luke Cage, Steel(DC), Night thrasher,Shadow hawk(image), Cloak (of cloak and dagger), Honorable mention for the Black Captain America and Nick Fury.

Definitely left out a few, Luke Cage (Power Man) is a noticeable example. Milestone comics also had a nice assortment of Black heroes, such as Hardware and Icon. Icon was the first Black comic hero to approach anywhere near Superman’s strength level.

You can tell this article was made by someone who never read a comic in their life. They just googled “black super hereos and listed the first results they got?

So many things wrong with this.

    1) Its “Static” not Static Shock. Static is the character Static Shock is the show.

    2) Where the hell is Luke Cage/Poweman

    3) No Spawn????

    4) Even though she don’t Have super powers what about Amanda “The Wall” Waller??? When You got no Powers and Batman still thinks you’re a big problem then you are no joke.

What about the various version of Steel John Irons and his niece Natasha Irons

    5) As Many already said, you can’t be serious and have no War Machine on here.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/greywolf5/ greywolf5

I’m surprised that Luke Cage was omitted and that T’Challa was so low on the list. Before he decided on doing Blade, Wesley Snipes was pegged to play The Black Panther. A very good friend of mines (Keith Thompson) was writing the script, but Blade received the green lght instead. That would’ve been one helluva movie! I’ve been reading comics since they were 12 cents and for the life of me, I can’t remember a black Captain America or Thor…It sounds ludicrous. Thor is the Norse God of Thunder and Cap is what every white man longs to be….The first black super hero I remember of any significant scale was the Black Panther’s debut in The Fantastic Four, circa 1964-1965….I wish more of us read comic books…Anything to get us out of the “its hard in the hood cause the hood is hardly the hood” mentality we’re stuck in…Let’s dream black people! http://www.blackpearlthebook.com

I am so totally impressed with all of you. Your knowledge of black superheroes is wonderful. I only know of a few that have been listed. Is there a club that keeps you up-to-date? I was just telling my husband I wish there was something I could give my grandson to get him inspired to read. I think comic books with black superheroes just might do the trick. I like video games but there’s a whole world out there to achieve. Maybe if he started reading comic books it would open him up to not only reading comics but other literature as well. You are all heroes in my book.

First off, I’m glad someone had the balls to admit that the original green lantern was black. Second, I like the fact that these superheros were mentioned but honestly there have been soo many black superheros over the years to just pick out a few. But what about: Captain Marvel, Black Lightening, Goliath, Onyx, Fairplay and Cyborg?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/panamaniak/ panamaniak

@BlackAngel105 sorry bro but even a wet behind the ears newbie reader knows the ORIGINAL Green Lantern was a white dude. Alan Scott, his first appearance was in All American Comics 1940. His weakness was anything made of WOOD not the color YELLOW. But hey don’t feel bad fam,I’ve been reading comics since 1978,lol! Peace.Wow,I’m shocked that Cage(formerly Power Man) is not on this list.

Meh….Good try but the list could be better…Storm and Black Panther are iconic figures and should be at the top of the list. Luke Cage has become one of the central figures in all of comics and expanded way beyond his blaxploitation beginnings and should be at the forefront too. Photon/Captain Marvel was a former leader of the Avengers. And Falcon deserves higher consideration given that he has been around for years.

SORRY MR.SCOTT,BUT THE PROBLEM WITH THIS LIST (AS IS WITH ALL THESE KINDS OF LIST) IS THAT THEY’RE SUBJECT TO OPINION OF THE WRITER…WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE…THE THING IS,YOUR LIST (NOT ONLY IN A BIZZARE ORDER)READS LIKE AN X-MEN “MUTANT BIBLE”…ANY TRUE COMIC READER WOULD HAVE PUT BLACK PANTHER FIRST.NOT BECAUSE HE’S STRONGER,BETTER OR SOME SUCH..BUT BECAUSE HE IS THE FIRST!! 1966…YEARS BEFORE ANY OTHER…C’MON!
AND WHILE I’M NOT SURE IF I’D HAVE PUT JOHN STEWART OR VIXEN IN THE TOP 10 (HAVE TO GIVE THAT MORE THOUGHT)WITH THE LIGHT THEY’VE BEEN SEEING IN THE LAST FEW YEARS WHAT WITH THE CARTOON AND RECENT COMIC APPEARANCES YOU LEAVE THEM OUT,BUT PUT IN A BUNCH OF OTHER CHARACTERS WHO DON’T HAVE THE HISTORY THEY DO..MATTER OF FACT,I WOULD HAVE PUT THEM IN THE 10..AND MAYBE PUT MR.TERRIFIC AND JAKEEM THUNDER OR EVEN AMAZING MAN IN THE NOTABLES..(HAVE YOU EVEN HEARD OF THEM? CURIOUS)
AND WHY OH WHY WAS LUKE “POWERMAN” CAGE OMITTED..CATS BEEN ALL OVER THE COMICS…WHERE WAS BLACK LIGHTINING ? HE WAS DC’S FIRST BLACK HERO..INTERESTING LIST…BUT NOT VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT.

    Marcus Scott
Thank you for writing this article highlighting Black Super Heroes and Sheroes. I never knew there where so many Black comic He and she roes. When I was coming up it was just Panther, John Stewart that all I can think of. It is so cool to see so many added to the list. Now our children can dream and imagine being super heroes and sheroes that look like them and are not lame or stupid. It is so important for a child’s growth to imagine and pretend to be more than they are. This is the stepping stone fore each man and woman grasp should extend beyond their reach.

This list was done by a non comic book fan because the before mentioned Luke Cage, War Machine, Deathlok and Spawn far outshines some of the Gen X crew mentioned in the article.
And for those that don’t know the original Green Lantern and many others are white. There are thousands of Green Lanterns in the Green Lantern Corps. And Ryan Reynolds will be just fine. Although I wish he would have stuck with Deadpool which he played in the Wolverine movie.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Please_No_Mas/ Please_No_Mas

    I agree with you WarMachine.
Green Lantern (why Honorable mention?) was an original hero back in the day; as well as Luke Cage. And then he left out War Machine (Iron Man’s best friend) and Nick Fury (SHIELD leader) as well.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is a much better fit; he plays a smartass too well! LOL

I loved Generation X till some white writer decided Synch was too good to live so they killed him off.

But i loved the characters in the comic like Skin the Latino, Mondo the Hawaiian, and Jubilee the Asian-American

But Synch and M was my favorite and at a time it seemed they were gonna make Synch and M the future parents of Bishop, but of course some white racist writer changed that

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/level63/ level63

Now ordinarily I wouldn’t chime on these discussions, but this one kinda got to me. How on earth do you have Black Panther and Storm at the back end of your list? They held Marvel down forever. Falcon and Jon Stewart on honorable mention? And where are Captain Marvel and Power Man? In fact didn’t Black Panther take on the Fantastic Four? Whoever wrote this list is truly out of order. :)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/rayskilla6/ rayskilla6

Yeah I co-sign with WarMachine2100 and a few others, obviously this writer doesn’t know shyt about comics and Black Superheroes. First of all why is it mostly black x-men characters on the list for greatest of all time. #2 no Spawn, really No Spawn, even though it was created and written by a white guy, the character Spawn, spawned(pun intended) a #1 selling comic, animated series, and movie, and presented a fresh different non-stereotypical representation of Main and supporting Black Characters. Also some of the characters you have on the honorable mentions list should be on main list, oh and dumbazz the character is Static, Static shock was the name of the cartoon they based on him. And by the way you made no mention of Milestone comics, which was an off shoot of DC comics and was the first major distributed BLACK OWNED comic imprint which focused solely on divers characters of color as the main characters

    1. Hardware: aka Curtis Metcalf, A Black American male, who is a technological super genius, to rival or maybe even smarter than your tony starks and reed richards of marvel universe. Once he found out his employer was an international crime lord, he invented a state of the art armor suit to combat his bosses criminal empire

    2. Icon: aka Augustus Freeman, An alien from a far away planet(similar to superman in origin as well as powers) when the infant alien baby ship crashes on earth, the ship changes the alien to resemble the life on the planet it is on, and since the ship was discovered by a slave woman, the alien was made to be a Black person, and uses its powers to help the Black Race and the world

    3. Blood Syndicate: various characters, mostly Black and Latino, from various street gangs. During a major gang fight, they were subjected to tear gas with mutagen effects, which killed most and gave superpowers to the few that survived. And so they band together for support and survival

    4. Xombi: aka David Kim, a Korean/Chinese scientist whose genetic experiments grants him the ability to heal from anything and never die. He combats all types of supernatural threats

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/rayskilla6/ rayskilla6

@tedlabs, my point exactly bruh. this author knows jack about BLACK SUPERHEROES, and this article does more harm than justice with the half-azzed information

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/rayskilla6/ rayskilla6

@level63, I totally agree bruh. Matter fact the writer is totally bogus for putting BLACK PANTHER AND STORM last(almost make me think its on purpose). THEY SHOULD BE NUMBER #1 Jointly. THEY ARE THE RULERS OF AN ENTIRE NATION AS KING AND QUEEN, AND TWO OF THE MOST POWERFUL CHARACTERS IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE. Both have faced some of the toughest villains, including Dr. Doom, Apocalypse, Onslaught, even Mephiesto(equivalent of the devil) and The Beyonder( an omnipotent being who puts superpowered champions against one another to see who’ll win) ALSO THEY ARE THE EPITOME OF THE POWER OF THE BLACK MAN AND BLACK WOMAN, AND STORM WAS EVEN WORSHIPED AS A GODDESS IN HER NATIVE VILLAGE FOR HER WEATHER CONTROLLING ABILITIES. I GUESS EVEN WHEN IT COMES TO COMIC BOOKS, BP DOESN’T WANT TO ILLUSTRATE BLACK LOVE AND UNITY BETWEEN BLACK MEN AND WOMEN SMH!!!!!!11

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/glcIII/ glcIII

Are you kidding me? How is that The Black Panther #9, Blade gets honoarble mention, and Spawn is not even on the list?

I find it weird that they don’t mention Spawn, Luke Cage. I’m also a little surprised that the above 2, Blade, Static Shock were left out of the top ten. Those are possibly the most interesting and popular heroes. I think this list is completely off the mark.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Fandole44/ Fandole44

Wow, I didn’t know X-Men’s nuts could support all that weight. There are enough comic nerds here to hold my greivances down, but BP is on nonsense. You keep messin up the news, but now, y’all f**kin wit my comics!!! Ya bout to get cut off! I knew the list was on bulls**t as soon as I saw Storm on top! No Luke Cage?! • http://www.blackplanet.com/AIREEZ75/ AIREEZ75
  • http://www.blackplanet.com/symphonee/ symphonee

This list is mostly comprised of newer comic book heroes from the X-Men genre. It shows what the author of the list mostly reads. I have been reading comics since I could read and I was lucky enough to have some of my father’s collection to read from. I am one of those people who has to tell themselves to not get pissed at comic book superhero movies because I know they will drastically change the story i.e. all of the X-men movies.

We also can not get mad at Ryan Reynolds playing the Green Lantern because the first Green Lantern in this sector was a White man. There are hundreds of Green Lanterns through out the galaxy, each defending their area so you have a lot that are not even human. Hell one was a planet. The Darkest Night series is one the best newer comics I have read in a long time and it gives a little history on characters along with a great story. There are several different lanterns with different powers and colors that correspond with them. People should check it out

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/robcole1988/ robcole1988

No one mentioned Mr. Terrific of the JSA (Justice Society of America)that I have seen yet. There are also several other heroes like Giant Man (Black Goliath), The Spectre, Shadowhawk, Brother VooDoo, Misty Knight, Captain Marvel (Photon), Shadowman and many more that should be mentioned before Orpheus or Cipher. I would put the Brown Hornet on the list before them! The writer of this article needs to apologize to black comic fans.

Okay, time for the nerd in me to emerge. I HOPE this list isn’t in order of importance with 1 being the best and 10 being the worst. Falcon, Storm and Black Panther should have made at least the top five! With Blade and John Stewart a.k.a. Green Lantern in there too. And don’t forget Luke Cage a.k.a. Power Man or Cloak of Cloak and Dagger. Spawn…don’t forget Spawn. At this point I took a second to read other posts and it looks like I’m not alone. Thank you, my fellow nerds, for adding to the list of the black superheroes that SHOULD have made the list before those that did. Falcon, an “honorable mention” at number 10?? Puff, puff pass!!
