To go off-topic briefly, I know from firsthand experience that many people look DOWN on Caucasian women who love/have loved, let alone are or have been attracted to ‘Black’ men. The n-word is an insult and insinuates a severe disdain for the Black race and is very well illustrated by his context in using the word. I’m not so much bothered by the word, but from the place it comes and the stereotypes that other people in our race continually perpetuate.

If we want these images to change as far as the ideas in others’ minds about us then WE ALL have to change. Of course there is never going to be a 100% change because you have stubborn people on both sides of the fence and therefore you’re going to always have counter-productive elements.

As far as the history lesson that was so kindly inserted into the article about the white woman not being able to corrupt her image and Black women can’t do anything to uphold hers. When I was a kid my mother taught me that if anybody called me a n**** I had her blessing to beat him to within an inch of his life or perhaps beyond. I’ve had such fights — no one died, although one perhaps came close. But now I wonder about the wisdom of giving a word soooooooo much power. Imagine how much power you have given a word when it’s gotten to the point that it’s a crime to use it in some places. That means the word NOW has soooo much power that it’s practically a crime NOT to beat their ass while at the same time recognizing that in our legal system a black man beating a white person under almost any circ**stance is likely to come out on the bottom.

So where does that leave me now? Now if I were to be called a n**** by some white person I would feel like a traitor to my race for not responding. I’d feel stupid for responding and giving him the satisfaction of knowing that he bothered me enough to kick his ass. I’d feel even worse still if I ended up getting my own ass kicked and had to either escalate things or give him the satisfaction of calling me the name, kicking my ass, AND getting away with it. Quite frankly, even in a place where he could be charged with a hate crime I’m not sure I really have the energy to run to the police and complain I was called a bad word and file charges against him, and having initiated physical violence would not help my case. Of course, I’d feel bad about not filing charges also.

So in almost every case except maybe where I kick his ass to the extent that he (and hopefully his friends) eliminate the word from their vocabulary AND I get away with it unharmed physically and legally, I end up a bigger loser either emotionally, physically, or legally. At the same time he wins knowing that he hurt me enough to elicit such a response, which is ultimately about as much as one can hope for when calling someone a name. Somehow going with the sticks-and-stones approach (not beating him with them as I was taught, but recognizing that names won’t hurt me) seems so much better.

Every time I hear a Black person call another Black person the n-word a part of me feels like the world has been turned upon its head. EVERY TIME I hear that word I can’t help remember the disturbing reality that when my father was 8 yrs old he accompanied his older cousins and uncles to cut down the body of a cousin from a tree where he had been hung by the klan. “NI**ERS DIE” had been carved deep into his chest with a knife and his body had been mutilated. I can’t believe this writer called me a N****r! I’m sorry if you want the accept the negative stereotype society places on Black people, you do that. But don’t expect the rest of us with actually self-esteem and self-worth to do so. How dare you? 1) The article was potentially a very brilliant piece of work, other than it suggesting that the use of the N word by Mel isn’t as critical as the writers view, that Black women are being demoralized. Both issues are important, the writer should have showed a bit more intellect by smoothly interweaving the negative impacts of both the use of the N word and the use of stereotypes and sexism, etc. Now regarding BlackPlanet, while it does offer many benefits to users, it is not owned by Black people, so those that want BlackPlanet to change and be more supportive of Black thought processes should realize: “If there is to be change, maybe that change should be to build and support a Black social website owned by Blacks.” Not that people of other nationalities aren’t capable of having of having a business that Blacks support, but to truly empower Blacks, Blacks need to start owning and not just be consumers. Now this is easier said than done since much of the Capitalistic system (banks, mortgage firms, the entire financial sector, venture capitalists, etc) often don’t give Blacks a fair share (no pun intended) of business support. And so many Blacks suffer from Willie Lynch syndrome (self hate) they often don’t support each others business plans and dreams. Slavery did much damage (lynchings, mental brainwashing) and today, modern slavery is still in various forms. Mel opened a door that we should never close, and we must address his racist views, but also re-evaluate the entire Western system and the damage it continues to perpetrate in an effort to continue to keep Blacks (and other Brown peoples) down. Where is the real Christianity and Democracy in a global system that is racist??

And when the Black community also deals with Blacks using the N word that would be truly a move in the right direction. Imagine whites / caucasians calling themselves Hon_ _ _ but getting angry if Blacks said it. The double standard must end. But on a deeper note, the N word comes from Africa, where (in several cultures) the name for God is NGR (and there’s the Niger region and Niger Delta, etc). Western slavery and racism have done such damage, just as they’ve succeeded in making dark skin color a negative (when everyone comes from Africa and Blacks) they’ve succeeded in making a positive noun, a negative thing. Yet, unless the historic nature of the N word and the use of it by racists as they lynched, raped, etc, must be addressed on some level while also addressing Christianity’s connection to the African slave trade, the Jewish connection to slavery, the Black sellouts throughout history that have sold out Black dreams, the dearth of Black role models in the community, Black politicians and their, typically, lackluster political support for their own communities, the demonization of Black religious and spirituality by a racist system, etc.

This is a story about a white man talking to his white woman about getting raped by Black men, How do you the writer make this out to be about Black women, this has nothing to do with us.
