Tyler Perry does great movies overall. I feel his best so far has been Diary of a Mad Black Woman. There will always be critics, but TP is a Christian man who brings his faith to the screen in a unique way. There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, it’s great to see some wholesome things in movies these days.

I love Madea and her brother. They are too funny. I don’t care much for the story lines of women as victims. The African American experience is already full of pain and tears. I don’t need to see that on the big screen but will watch the DVD. As long as he keeps me laughing, I’ll keep watching.

I Love the Tyler Perry Movies, I feel like every movie that he makes has a lot of meaning to them and then Madea is like the way to not make the movie so sad and so serious. I love how I come out laughing and crying with his movies.

I agree with Spike Lee, I have never been a big fan of Tyler Perry and movies like Little Man, and White Chicks. I do not know why but black people as a people don’t support good movies. I remember watching Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda it amazed and hurt me to see how we continue to destroy one another. Even today we have Genocide in Africa and Genocide in America.
You are not cool or don’t have swag, if you are smart, enjoy school and want to do something positive with your life besides rapping, singing, selling drugs, having kids and being in a gang. If you have a different opinion you’re a “hater”. Its sad because even through we have a black President and a huge number of rich and famous people we are still at the bottom and falling fast. I read the comments on B.P. and they are frightening. The generation of the 80’s up to the now need some serious help. Men should never hit women, we all need to have more respect for one another. And what is wrong with having a different point of view. Remember:
1. A fool never learns from their mistakes.
2. A smart person learns from their mistakes.
3. A wise person learns from others mistake.

My criteria for a good movie: 1.Did it make me feel some kind of emotion (laugh, cry, ponder life’s mysteries, e.g.) 2. Was it worth the 12.50 plus candies? (With tyler perry movies, it usually is.) and 3. was u entertained? You didn’t have to look at your watch at any point or wish someone call you so u’ll have an excuse to leave. If these 3 requirements have been met, THEN IT WAS A GOOD MOVIE! Shut the hell up and pass the popcorn. . .

Tyler Perry needs to allow a seasoned professional director to direct him and his movies. Madea Goes to jail would have been much better, if he had not directed it.

Why is everything “black” depicted held to the same light as all the rest? Spike is similar to MJ imitated but never duplicated! so is T.P. and Will smith, Jamie Foxx, & Eddie Murphy & Martin Lawrence! I dont see the big deal here I enjoy ALL of these actors/producers! But I guess I must fall under the “dumb” black category! No1′s perfect but these Gent’s are our finest (so far) yet we tear them to shreads on what they aren’t doing, could do better, & simply what we dont like! I’m not gonna say I LOVED everything by T.P. but he has an eye for talent, & he can put together a great story! I personally dont need any comic relief & I guess thats the basis of it all regular (or 2 some “dumb”) black ppl do not need more than a good story line just a good old fashion great, make me laugh, give me a great on the come up story, & always a little bit of God’s word in there & we are satisfied!!!! I know I havent been disappointed yet, I mean I have a friend who drives 2 HOURS just so we can go to the T.P. movies together, now u tell me thats who is worried about who sees him & who doesn’t! (he just wanna watch the movie with ME! lol)

The problem with Tyler Perry is that the situations need to be presented better. The last movie he made would have been better if they didn’t include Medea. The story about a man and the relationship he had with a woman that wasn’t considered a normal woman in black’s people eyes. Of course that means that Tyler Perry would have to write a novel, which always been his problem.

With Tyler Perry movies the major problem things just happen and the character tells what happens. But these movies don’t give no deeper meanings, no inner thoughts within their minds. Good movies make you feel like you in a journey with these people. But at the end of these movies I just feel like I watch a movie. That is all.

I’m proud of that brother. Go get that paper. Conversely, I am not a fan of his work. I find it boring and trite. Spike is brilliant. But spike is better directing than writing. In my opinion.

i’d say i agree with you…spike lee often has comic relief in his stories, but at least he has black folks making it.

and he doesnt say ‘black women are right, black men are wrong’ as tyler perry’s idiocy does.

also, have you seen spikes ‘miracle at st. anna’? excellent movie, with little ‘comic relief’ as it’s a war movie.

VERY impressed…the press gave it kudos, but i’m guessing because since it wasn’t about coonshining black folks buck dancing or rapping, many black folks didnt take the time to see it.

it’s a shame when a sissified cross dresser (which wouldn’t be so offensive if he came out the closet) can make moronic movies that do better than ‘miracle at st. anna’ among black folks.

Indeed, Tyler has given jobs to a lot of black actors and actresses. He is doing comedy and drama, but the fact that he’s black, it’s become an issue. I have to admit as well, now that it’s been brought to my attention, I envy white writers and directors. They can make their funny and silly movies of them and their drunk friends and it just be another movie for the entertainment industry. Tyler Perry’s movies are funny and even more, they do present realistic situations. You can’t get mad at that. And for the record, Addicted was my first ZANE back and that along with Nervous are my two favorites, lol. It’s ENTERTAINMENT!!

I see no difference in the way Tyler or Spike portray black people. They always have a smart young black person making it happen, & some ignorant N1%%@ acting a fool through out the movie for comic relief. My problem is why it seem ever black writer/director feel they have to make a movie about family problems, racism, or women abuse. Why not an adventure, space movie, bad ass police cop, or even a mystery. With a Tyler or Spike movie you no what you get, and for me, you seen one you seen them all.

I’m considered to be a smart Black person. But I know it’s a time and place for everything. Tyler Perry is just hustling and giving the people what they want. Some of his movies/plays are hilarious and some of them nothing special. He’s hit or miss with me. You can’t hate on a Black man who’s generating legit income in a industry where Black people have lil to no power in. Obama is prez, but Black divison is still alive and well. So that proves that change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time and effort.

I don’t like Tyler and I’ve seen all of his movies, except The Family that Preys. However, I’ll continue to support him because he is a black man doing his thang and his movies aren’t as revolting as John Singleton’s movies are. I’m hoping that he’ll continue to grow as a screenwriter and director. Maybe in the next few years, his characters will be less of a caricature and more 3 dimensional.

I’m so with what (TiredMan from BP) said. I find his movies to be entertaining but I feel the acting is so amateur, even on films with actors who’ve already proven themselves. I also find that although he depicts our negatives like they are, the many happy endings are unrealistic(e.g. in Mad goes Jail, the crackhead marries a lawyer). Yes there is hope for all of us but that was not his first time using that particular role. As for Madea, I know of violent people who feel justified in being them because she sees it they way they see it. Entertaining as it may be, it’s not innovative so much as it is a perpetuation of one of our communities’ biggest problems. I can go and laugh at it know that even though some of those characters are similar to me, they are not me…but it burns me that people may see our faults knowing that those r not our endings.

When you get to high on yourself to laugh at stuff that’s funny or be afraid to be made fun of because of something that’s funny…… you have a real serious issue with yourself. I’m a grown ass man and I still watch cartoons when I find a good one, and I don’t care because I’m not afraid to laugh at stuff that’s funny, or do I give a f**k at what people think about that. Cause as long as my rents paid, got food on the table it really shouldn’t matter what I watch. They say the smarter you get the more common sense you loose, and that way of thinking is dumb!

I guess I’m one of those “weirdos” who just doesn’t find Tyler Perry innovative nore funny. I HAVE seen his stuff, I think is sucks! It appeals to the sensitivities of a woman in a feminized society such as ours (based on the fact that the majority of his audiences are black women), and any man who’s so infactuated with a woman’s perspective HAS to have both his motives AND his sexual orientation questioned. His work will NEVER be even nominated for an Academy Award or a Tony in ANY category. Spike Lee, on the other hand is a true artist. His movies are not just one-trick/one-style movies like Perry’s. He represents true artistic flexibility and versatility…war, race, betrayal, social commentary…true entertainment (TiredMan from BP).

Oh and Family Guy’s another example of unpredictable, innovative, creative, and unique humor (they also portray black people in a f**ked up way). So my point is that it’s not about how he portrays black people. It’s about how he’s just not on my wavelength as far as humor is concerned. Luckily a lot of people find humor in his work. Ok dude. I like the fact that you write this tryin to bring a new perspective in light of the Spike Lee comments about Tyler Perry. At the end of the day he set out to entertain people just like Bob Johnson. So it’s not as serious as a lot of us intellectuals like to make it seem. Most of us are just frustrated that we don’t have enough representations period and when we get them they don’t stray too far from the same few characters. Here’s where I agree with you.
“So here again as a film fan, I find myself envying white people. White people are free to go to the movies simply to be entertained. Black people go in worrying about whether or not we’ll see a realistic depiction of ourselves onscreen.”

Personally I approach every movie with the mindset of whether or not it will be creative, entertaining, and at least unpredictable to an extent. Innovation and complexity of humor push my buttons. Tyler Perry’s movies are the opposite of that. So my beef with Tyler Perry has little to do with his portrayals of black people (I love Eddie Murphy, Katt Williams, and Dave Chappelle’s portrayals of us because their creative, innovative, and funny.) My hang up with Tyler Perry is that it just flat out isn’t funny. I could care less about how many educated, upwardly mobile, and Cosby-esque portrayals he shows. You just flat out have to be funny. Boondox portrays us awfully most of the time but it’s the best and most real show I’ve ever seen. You’ll never hear me say anything bad about Aaron McGruder because he has the PERFECT blend of entertainment and reality. He portrays us in a f**ked up but hilarious way and I absolutely LOVE IT! Tyler Perry just makes me try to force a laugh because he’s trying. If I watch him I’m watching him out of sympathy and that’s not fair to either one of us. To the ones that enjoy Tyler Perry, congrats. Whatever it takes to find entertainment in a cruel world, live it up. I ain’t mad at u
