Rush Limbaugh is expected to be dropped from a group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams, according to three NFL sources.
Dave Checketts, chairman of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and the point man in the Limbaugh group attempting to buy the Rams, realizes he must remove the controversial conservative radio host from his potential role as a minority member in the group in order to get approval from other NFL owners, the sources said.
Three-quarters of the league’s 32 owners would have to approve any sale to Limbaugh and his group. Earlier this week, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay predicted that Limbaugh’s potential bid would be met by significant opposition. Several players have also voiced their displeasure with Limbaugh’s potential ownership position, and NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith, who is black, urged players to speak out against Limbaugh’s bid.
Ultimately, the sources said, Checketts must reconfigure his group and find another investor to make his bid more viable.

Commissioner Says NFL Will Not Tolerate Divisive Limbaugh

BOSTON – If Rush Limbaugh becomes a candidate to own the St. Louis Rams, he could face serious opposition from other NFL team owners.

It takes 24 of the 32 owners to approve any team sale, and even before Limbaugh has become part of an official bid to purchase the Rams, he’s been shunned by one team executive.

Colts owner Jim Irsay vowed Tuesday to vote against him and commissioner Roger Goodell said the conservative commentator’s “divisive” comments would not be tolerated from any NFL insider.

“I, myself, couldn’t even consider voting for him,” Irsay said at the fall owners meetings. “When there are comments that have been made that are inappropriate, incendiary and insensitive … our words do damage, and it’s something that we don’t need.”

Irsay is the first owner who has stated unequivocally he would reject Limbaugh because he made a habit of “demonizing individuals.”

“I met Rush only once. He seemed like a nice guy to me and all those kind of things,” Irsay said. “It’s bigger than the NFL. As a nation, and as a world, we’ve got to watch our words and our thoughts. They can do damage.”

In 2003, the conservative broadcast personality was forced to resign from ESPN’s Sunday night football programming after saying of Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb: “I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well.”

Those words have not been forgotten throughout the league, particularly now that Limbaugh’s name has surfaced as part of St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checkett’s group that is interested in purchasing the Rams.

Commissioner Roger Goodell repeatedly distanced the league from Limbaugh’s statements on Tuesday, calling them “polarizing comments that we don’t think reflect accurately on the NFL or our players.”

“I have said many times before that we are all held to a higher standard here,” the commissioner said. “I think divisive comments are not what the NFL is all about. I would not want to see those kind of comments from people who are in a responsible position within the NFL. No. Absolutely not.”

According to transcripts posted on his Web site, in 2007 Limbaugh also said: “The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.”

In an e-mail to The Associated Press, Limbaugh said he was forced to respond because “the totally made-up and fabricated quotes attributed to me in recent media reports are outrageous and slanderous.” He also noted that he would be a minority owner in the prospective group, adding he is from Missouri and was saddened when the Cardinals left for Arizona.

“I am happy to be involved in an effort to keep the Rams in St. Louis. I love the National Football League, I eagerly discuss it and promote it and I greatly admire the men who play in the league. They are the best at what they do,” he wrote. “It is regrettable that something I have dreamed about for years has taken this course. But the fight is worth it to me. I love the National Football League.”

The Rosenbloom family, which owns the Rams, might not even sell the team. But they are using Goldman Sachs to help them investigate a sale.

“They’re not certain they are even sellers,” New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch said, adding that he expected a decision by the end of the season. “We can’t speculate on potential owners because they have not brought up any names to put before ownership.”

Prominent blacks are already lining up against Limbaugh, including the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith, who is black, urged players to speak out against Limbaugh’s bid, and several have already said they would not play for his team.

Also Tuesday, Goodell said Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable will be subject to NFL discipline if he is implicated by police in their investigation of an alleged assault on an assistant coach. Goodell said workplace violence is specifically identified in the league’s personal conduct policy, and if Cable is charged with any crimes, he could be punished by the NFL.

Goodell expects to receive a report “in the next couple weeks” on the Napa, Calif., police investigation, which is in the hands of the district attorney. He said the league is “allowing the criminal process to go forward for some period of time” before potentially getting involved.

“What are the facts?” Goodell asked at the meetings. “There’s a legal and criminal process going on to determine what are the facts.”

Napa County DA Gary Lieberstein said his office continues to review the case and does not expect any announcement on whether charges will be filed this week. But criminal charges need not be brought against Cable for the NFL to discipline him if he broke the league’s conduct rules.

Defensive assistant Randy Hanson has alleged that he was punched by Cable during training camp and his jaw was broken. Hanson also has claimed Cable threatened to kill him during the August attack.

Cable has denied the allegations and has been advised to stay silent.

I cant believe the Jews took out Arsenio… I think Eddie should hook the homie up with more movie roles or somethin “smh” freakin smucks

  • 10-14-2009 9:45 pm

Rok, it was crazy. The local Jewish group (JDL) picketed outside his studio and told him they would have him off the air in a year. Had Arsenio so shook, that he had a little disclaimer before the show (something he had never done, nor have I seen any other talk show host do when interviewing “controversial guests”) Sure enough, Arsenio was cancelled a few months later.. Coincidence? I don’t believe in that!

Rush Limbaugh is Now and ALWAYS has been a Ngative Thinking, Devisive, Racist, Fat Pig Idiot!!! The NFL would be Extremely Hypocritical to have ANYTHING to do with him as an owner or in ANY other capacity. Rush can spend his money on anything he wants to as far as I’m concerned but if the NFL is STUPID enough to allow him ownership in ANY kind of way….I wouldnt support or watch that team……EVER !!!

    I know @ Sub

I never understood how he has been the longest tenured coach in the league and aint never did squat

  • 10-14-2009 7:13 pm

Da_J_Rok Rush has 20 million listeners or so. I’d like to say that at least Bud Adams, the owner of the Titans isn’t racist. He has had like 3 black QB’s in a row. The only thing I don’t like is he isn’t stepped in the mess that Field Goal Fisher has created.

I didnt see that Arsenio show, I wonder if he got a box set of dvd’s I would actually buy it, I loved Arsenio, which reminds me, whateva happen to that Nia Peebles chic that used to come on right after him????

  • 10-14-2009 6:25 pm

@Hersey1..Right ON! I came back to say the same thing, Rush will likely still have his money in on the deal even if his name won’t openly appear. Of course, all the Negroes who were protesting this so hard, will think they just “won” something!

Rok, Rush speaks for a lot of people in this country, dare I say the majority. The fact that you don’t see anyone rising up against him in a strong manner suggests that his views are probably not that inflammatory to many…Hell, Jay Leno just had Rush on the other day and everything was good! ..anyone remember the protests and subsequent fallout, when Arsenio Hall had Farrakhan on his show?

  • 10-14-2009 4:33 pm

i agree with _A_ blacks are viewed as money making potential to all team owners and i’m sure most of them even believe in what rush is saying…. the only reason he’s not getting let in the loop is because he’ll bring attention to whats really going on its all public relations move for the nfl to publicly denounce his participation… and to tell the truth even if he not allowed to outright become a partial owner one of his hidden racist buddies will cut him in on a piece of the pie under the table..

  • 10-14-2009 3:54 pm

40 Millie a year… Somebody really loves him cause thats a very steep price to pay someone to be a professional racist

  • 10-14-2009 3:46 pm

Anyone who doesn’t think there aren’t racist owners, coaches, trainers, front office etc. people in the NFL up to and including the commissioner is not thinking straight. If you think Rush is so isolated in his viewpoints, how do you account for the millions of people who listen to him, and that’s not even counting those who actually don’t listen, but still agree…

    Wake The F UP!!!!!!!!!!!!

~~Racism is not our problem, it is our inept reaction to it~~

  • 10-14-2009 2:55 pm

I made a statement a while back about how racist the NFL already is, because its obvious that they make specific rules to keep black players from expressing themselves on the field and off. I think if the clown got the bread then let him buy the team, its up to the players if they willing to play for this idiot at the end of the day, other then that it dont matter, cause I would say 85% of the owners already are racist with and I wanna add another 10% but im being generous

  • 10-14-2009 2:14 pm

It would destroy the NFL, to make the black players work for white bigotted racist rush limbaugh.intentional fumbles, droped passes, missed tackes etc.rush should only be allowed to own a team in hell where he comes from.

  • 10-14-2009 1:19 pm

I have to be real honest here, I don’t agree with this stance at all, by the NFL…How many people own businesses that are divisive? At least Rush is up front with it, while others hide in the background fronting like they love everybody. Honestly I could care less who owns the rams or any other team for that matter, but I’m really surprised at how big a story this has really become. I mean will a part owner of a NFL team have that much effect on our everyday lives? I wish someone would ban some of these CEO’s on Wall street so they are no longer able to rob the masses..

  • 10-14-2009 12:11 pm

Amen! God bless Jim Irsay. Limbaugh has NO respect for himself, this country or anyone else. He has freedom of speech but that doesn’t mean that words can’t hurt people.
