VIDEO: Dunking Female Basketball Player Punches Player

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Baylor star who created buzz with her above-the-rim dunks is likely to face discipline after punching an opposing player in the face.

Officials ejected Brittney Griner after the freshman punched Texas Tech’s Jordan Barncastle in No. 14 Baylor’s 69-60 win over the Lady Raiders on Wednesday night.

Lady Bears coach Kim Mulkey said she’ll deal with Griner. But Baylor and the Big 12 Conference likely will consider their own punishments as the team prepares for Sunday’s season finale against Missouri.

“There’s no place for that in sports,” Mulkey said. “It was ugly for women’s basketball. It was ugly that coaches were on the court, that benches cleared, and I will take care of that with my team.”

Baylor was up 55-39 when Barncastle fouled Griner while guarding her under the Lady Bears basket. As the Tech player was moving away and untangling her arm from Griner, the Baylor standout swung and landed a punch with her right hand on Barncastle’s face.
Griner had scored 21 points when she was ejected with 9:01 to play.

Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry said Barncastle has an appointment in the morning to determine the extent of her injury.

“We’re all in shock right now,” she said. “It’s very unfortunate. It’s very sad. My only concern is Jordan Barncastle.”

Barncastle was not available to the media following the game.

She, Curry and several other Lady Raiders gathered in the arena’s broadcast room after Curry finished with reporters’ questions to view the incident. The replay showed Griner taking an off-balance, roundhouse swing at Barncastle’s face a few seconds after officials called her for a foul on Griner.

    The point of the story is this “chick” has messed up her career over something so silly. Basketball is a contact sport, and you have to know how to handle yourself. “She” definantly made a big mistake. But i do agree with some of you they definantly need to check “her” out, because the Adam’s apple is there, the voice just isn’t right, and she definantly has the stature of a man. If they find out that “she” really is a man I think she needs to be barred from playing basketball forever, and the school needs to be found responsible also. I feel bad for the girl who got sucker punched. That was a “b..ch” ass move.

    As I said in a comment in the Washington Post, Brittney lost it and there’s no excuse for it. I heard last night that she’d been suspended for two games, which is appropriate. She has no record of this sort of behavior in her past. I can understand how it happened, given the double teams and triple teams which have frustrated her all season, as well as the much higher level of physicality of play in college ball as opposed to HS ball. I thought Brittney had been handling that well all season, if you check out her facial expressions during the games. She always looks calm, serene, and composed. Well clearly not. I would say say she’s been stuffing the anger and frustration all season, instead. That’s what led to the off balance punch. I don’t believe anyone she’s played against, from what I’ve seen, has deliberately been knocking her around more than anyone else gets knocked around, however whether she understands that and understands that most of that is part of the game is another matter. She has gotten lots of foul shots from fouls committed against her, so it’s not as though the refs are letting things go, I just think it’s a maturation process for her. There’s been lots of pressure on her to be a star from mthe beginning. Not from Kim Mulkey, the coach, or from her team mates, but from everyone else involved in the game. I think maybe they need to work more with her, to handle the frustration better, so this doesn’t repeat. I don’t believe it’s in Brittney’s nature to behave this way and hopefully the suspension will give her time to reflect on her actions. I would love to see her change the course of women’s basketball, which is where she’s headed, but not at the expense of her happiness, her goals and objectives in her young life. She does not need a bad reputation. It’s harder for women to overcome this stuff than for men.

    well as i c it i played basketball all my life and from the court there is alot of s**t said and done that spectators dont really recognize. Aint no telling what transpired between these two before the game cuz ole girl was BLATANTLY holding brittney , and then if u notice she didnt really look shocked when she got hit which tells me there was already a issue between these two and for everybody who keep sayin its a contact sport theres a difference between guarding and swinging some one the hell around that b***h deserved to not only get hit but she needed to be thrown out the game as well for instigating the situation. Brittney probably wouldnt have hit her if she hadnt swung her around if brittny hadnt hit her they might had called a technical foul anyways cus that s**t was very apparent she had a issue.

    Well we only see a piece of it, we don’t know what was going on before that. They were both wrong! Period!
