Torii does bring up legit points about the economics of baseball and how teams are going overseas where they can get players on the cheap. With American kids (black and white) they have to go through the draft, and when selected can hire agents and ask for more money. But if a team sets up an academy in an impoverished area of a caribbean or South American nation, they can sign lots of kids for virtually nothing because those kids are desperate to get out of there. The kids down there are signed as young as 16 and aren’t represented.

What it does is create the perception of diversity, when its really about teams maxing out their profit margin.

I’m a huge baseball fan and I understand what Torii Hunter is attempting to say. But the Latinos have taken over Baseball and this sounds like another “they took my job” rant. MLB has started a program to bring back baseball to the urban areas of the U.S. Some my fellow Black people don’t care for or aren’t interested in Baseball. Jason Heyward the #1 prospect in the country and who plays for the Braves can show Torii Hunter and others that Black American Baseball players do still exist and perform at a high level.

These black athletes have it tough in some respects. Half of the people want them to just shut up and play, while the other half want them to speak up on more issues dogging our community. I say, don’t “follow” any school of thought, and do what you feel. Some of us feel more compelled to speak up for our people, while others are more comfortable looking the other way and going about their business. most black americans who want to be pro athletes, favor basketball and football. baseball takes the longest to get to the pros. after college, most have to go through the minors before getting to the pros as would basketball or even football, you can drop out of college and go into the draft.

torii could have articulated his point better than what he did instead of at the expense of afro latinos. if he has an issue with there being a lack of black american baseball players, maybe he should start his own camp or encourage black youth to join get into baseball.

I disagree with you about one thing though. I think the lack of interest in baseball with black youth, is due to the lack of little leagues and overall promotion of the sport in the inner city. I disagree about the route being longer to the pros than other sports. Many players get drafted right out of high school, and if you’re good enough can be in the pros in 4-5 years and shorter than that if you’re really good. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that baseball is America’s past time and the amount of blacks who were playing in the late 70′s. I think people projected 20 years down the road that whites would be a minority, and plans were put in place. That’s my personal feeling. If you look at the NBA and the proliferation of white European players, you can see a similar pattern happening. It’s always about maintaining superiority with whites. In this case, it’s purely numbers. Whites will probably start to lose interest if teams start to field teams with 60% black people. Trust me, in NY you should have heard sports talk radio when Omar Minya started putting “too many” latin players out there. People were complaining that he was turn the team into a Latin ball club, and at the time it was still about 65-70% white. There is an article today that suggests in a short time, the majority of babies born will be non white. Whites are ALWAYS overly concerned about if they will lose their numerical edge, because they know it takes a nation of millions to hold us back. But when we are the millions, and they are a nation of hundreds of thousands, the seat of power just might change.

It does take longer to make the pros in baseball. it was actually stated by a broadcaster when I was watching a giant’s game along time ago. he was discussing how there are alot of good athletes who choose the basketball or the nfl because it’s quicker to make the pros.

I never had a problem joining a pony league baseball league as a kid. no shortage here. my supposition on why many inner city youth dont pursue baseball, because it’s not as sexy as basketball or the nfl. no shortage of basketball hoops in the hood. im sure if black youth wanted to play baseball they have all the access and better amenities than the kids in latin america.

In the dominican republic, kids play baseball on dirt fields and use milk cartons for gloves. baseball is king over there just like basketball is over here.

again, I think torii needs to do some research. most black youth I know of who are into pro sports are into basketball and football. over 80% of the nba and the nfl is black. that tells you what is the most preferred sports in the black american community.

I would agree if the player is mediocre, then yes it’s going to take a long time, but an exceptional player will make it in the pros at or about the same time as any other sport. Jeter for instance was drafted out of HS and was in the pros in 3 years. Now, Jeter was 5th or 6th overall pick. The Astros passed on him because they thought he was going to demand a 1mil signing bonus. The Yankees were able to get him and you know the rest. Jeter actually stunk it up defensively in the minors, but dude worked hard at it, improved and got called up. Obviously, that’s not the norm, but there is NO sport where that is the norm. The point is, baseball is like every other sport with respect to the dues you have to pay, but the fact remains, that because MLB teams now can go to Latin America and find guys who are just as talented, but not as savvy in terms of getting the best deal for themselves, they are exploited. Like I told you, Carlos Guillen cosigned Sheffields comments when he said essentially the same thing. I heard another talk show host make the same comment. These dudes are trying to justify why these teams are down in LATIN AMERICA building baseball academies, while inner cities don’t have decent parks to play in. But to be real honest though, these black children need to stop looking at sports and music as the primary vehicles out of there situation any damn way. Sports is nothing more than 21st century slavery!

and another thing, most inner cities have had their baseball field REMOVED and when a playground is made, they will definitely put basketball courts up. So inner cities have a very very limited access to baseball fields, so kids don’t grow up seeing that’s something WE do here. That’s why they go to basketball, it’s easily accessible.
I do think the guy meant to say that the black history in the game is being erased, as more blacks turn away from Baseball, but that’s more of a parents not getting their kids into Baseball, not managers and scouts trying to get more blacks from other places. I’m sure the imports don’t give a two sh1ts about the historic black figures, so eventually that history won’t mean crap to anyone since parents are teaching their black kids about it.

I’m not sure I understand the issue, so if you don’t speak English you’re not “Black”. What about people from Haiti? There are Black people in Cuba and in the Dominican Republic. They were brought there in slave ships, the same way our ancestors were brought here. Why should we say they aren’t Black? They are not American. They are Afro-Cuban, or Afro-Dominican. But they sure as hell are of African heritage. I’ll bet you everything I have, the KKK won’t look at Vlad Guerrero and go “Oh…he’s not Black..he’s Dominican, he’s OK in our book”. As a Cubana, this is ridiculous, ignorant and offensive. I am Afro-Latin, not trying to be black, but my heritage is African American. The only difference is that the slave ships bought some slaves to America and millions all over the Carribean. Cuba was the last Carribean country to abolish slavery. Coming from NYC people are used to seeing brown/black skinned Latins, but here in the DC area, people are surrounded for the most part by Central Americans or Mexicans so they are not exposed to the plethora of Latin colors and mixes. I have had to educate TONS of co-workers, etc…when they say “you don’t look Cuban”…uhhh what does Cuban look like? I’m brown skinned, curly hair…my frined in NYC is Cuban and she has long blond hair and green eyes……We are a mix, so never speak Spanish about someone you’re assuming is white or black because you NEVER know….Spanish is my first language, and more than a few times, I’ve busted “white” Latinas talking about me right in front of me, because they assumed I was black….You know their jaws dropped to thier chins, when I told them off in Spanish..hee, hee…

Cubans, Afro-Latinos are black. SOme may come into the US and deny being black once they get here but looking at them they are black so the argument can swing either way. You have people who are of African descent but speak SPanish who do not want any identification with the black culture here in America unless it’s to their advantage and I think that is what is really trying to be explained in this particular case. That’s what happen when you have so many people who are trying to run from their culture and be something else; you tend to lose sight of who you are or where you originated from.

In all honesty, my interpretation of this is simple:
**There are those in the Latin community who ARE of African descent who wholeheartedly turn their noses down on us, as though the Latin side of their geaneology makes them superior. Case in point, Tiger Woods calling himself Cablasian (or whatever the term is that he used) instead of black.
Having lived in NYC and having worked with quite a few Dominicans who are not too far from my own skin complexion, I can say first-hand that being “black” in their eyes is akin to “lesser humans”, or something to that effect. I was even told by one of my former co-workers that if I tried to date his sister, he and his family would kill me… BECAUSE I am BLACK.
With that being said, either you are in the boat or you are not. You cannot claim to be BLACK when it suits you and then discard us as though we are trash, while claiming you are something else when the situation is not in your favor. I do not have that option, nor would I want it. I wouldn’t want to be anything BUT black.

These are the type of statements that divide black people all around the globe. I suggest that Tori Hunter enroll in an African History class to study more about his people. The fact of the matter is that Baseball and Soccer is all that the blacks in Latin and Central America know about and they put a lot of effort in excelling in those areas. They are a variety of sports in the United States such as Football, Basketball, Boxing, Track and Field that African Americans can choose from. Statistics so that the interest of African-Americans in Baseball has declined rapidly over the last decade or so.

ASLgeek: First, you do not have to some ‘latino in you’ just because you have a Spanish last name. It is just a name. Do we have some “British” in us or German because of our names? Also, there is no “parts black” in the equation because many of you are MORE black than African-Americans and your culture is almost ALL African – EVEN ON THE SPANISH SIDE of things! I had to make that clear for those of you who think that Spanish culture is European or Roman. You had better look again at who ruled Spain before 1492.

It’s just like when I see a jet-black east Indian, there is no way “I” can be black without you guys being black.

These groups I just pointed out love to swear that they are white whenever they can – just not in front of whites. Dominicans in particular have a self-hate thing going on. When you guys love to point out Haitians being DIFFERENT from you, when they ARE NOT! You people share an island. BOTH are from slaves and the former slave masters and if you want to get real – both are so-called ‘latinos’ since Haitians speak a form of French, a Latin derived language.

Now the Cubans I respect more because they know who they are and they do not try to pretend as much, although some of the barley white ones (Andy Garcia, Desi Arnez anyone?)love to assume themselves to be white or try to wonder why they do not get roles for white guys. The white man is telling you something! Now, in Cuba, unlike DR or PR, I can say that there are official white hispanics there. The problem with most hispanics is, most seem to want to think that they are white is they are mixed or ‘light.’ This is how you can tell if you are white. If white call you white, treat you white and you do not live in the ghetto with blacks(I am not talking about you)! That will give just a little bit of a clue.

When you dig down deep, we all have our affects from slavery. The prime differences are the the Spanish and Portuguese did not seem to mind mixing with the natives and the Africans. They did not anticipate the British and German related peoples becoming stronger than they were and then dictating to them who and what real whiteness was. Only after the British and especially the Americans became powerful and flaunted their racism did these ‘latinos’ start the process of begging to be white. By then (late 1800′s), it was already too late as most of you were mixed. Hell, the Iberian’s were already mixed before they brought slaves over. This was their first time ever breaking out of Europe to begin with!

Black Americans grew up wanting to be white at one point and time also, but the white man in America was so racist that he forced us to be think black and to view ourselves as black even when we were half white or mostly white. In fact, just look up the great blacks in American history and you can see how white many of them were! You will also find, as you can today, that if you replace Alicia Keys with “Anna-Marie Perez” now you think hispanic. This is why so many mixed or light-skinned blacks get mistaken for ‘hispanic.’ We are the same, but hispanics in their quest to be white, mix with the whitest ones that they can find and you end up with mulattoes mixing with each other for the hispanic result.

The bottom line, like African-Americans, many so-called “Afro-Cubans” (what are the others called?) can call ourselves black and (in general) know who we are and how we got here and how not to keep empowering those who have caused our misery because we have some things in common. What we have in common are leaders hell bent on giving us hell and reminding us that we were brought here to work ONLY, not to enjoy the stolen lands. In the US we had the domestic terror of the late 19th century and all of the 20th century which told us that we are black and anyone with a drop of your blood is black – just to make sure none of you benefit from looking white. In Cuba they had Battista, who was a mixed, self-hating segregationist. He wanted to keep what could be determined as blacks and whites separate. I am sure this came from Americans who controlled him which is why they really hated Castro. That’s another story…

If it were not for racism in America, African-Americans would be just as delusional as hispanics. The difference is that the white man told us we were black, while in the hispanic world, they could be white.

What does he feel about lighter skinned blacks playing in the MLBA,such ignorant comments from folk who have no true knowledge of self.I would hate for him to say to me or my son’s one(dark) one(light) that we are not men of color. Mlb is just the tip of the iceberg,this is happening in real life where you have cultural differences between the two groups,it really seems like a competition for jobs,housing and every other thing,theres going to be some tension there because african americans isn’t use to it,i personally don’t have a problem with latins or anyone south america but when you get a massive surge of people entering your community it cause concern.

Dominican is not a color; just like American is not a color. However,black is a color and it can come from many places. You can be a black Italian, Jamaican,Bahamian,Dominican, or Puerto Rican. This Hunter guy should not confuse the color of one’s skins with the issues of the baseball league’s politics when it comes to outsourcing players at a cheaper rate. Also, Hunter mentioned Puerto Ricans; Puerto Rico is part of the United States, so technically,that is not going to another country to search for talent.

i noticed a very sharp decline in black american-born based players and the rise of foreign-born black baseball players in the mid-90′s to early 2000′s, at one time most of the black players were actual american-born players such as Dave Winfield, Rod Carew, “Mr. October”(Reggie Jackson), Ken Singleton, Al Bumbry, Eddie Murray, and Barry Bonds, just to name a few. What happened??????

Torii Hunter is obviously an idiot. Black and Latino are not mutually exclusive. One can be a black Latino (some are even conscious enough to admit as much). We are all a part of the black diaspora. The slave ship just landed in different place. My ancestors landed in South Carolina and most Dominican or Puerto Ricans ancestors landed in their respective places. There may not be African American, but they are most certainly black (whether we or they like it or not).
