Sports writer, Stephen A. Smith has a lot to say about Gilbert Arenas and the criminal element in African-American culture and sports. Here’s what he had to say in his column on Fox Sports.

But the mess that Arenas has created is not going away. Nor are the questions destined to follow about professional athletes, specifically those from the African-American Community — and how the criminal element has virtually hijacked the culture of Black America.

As much as I’ve tried to disagree with my friend and noted contemporary, Jason Whitlock, who’s repeatedly and vociferously lamented the state of affairs within the Black Community — specifically as it pertains to the negative parts of Hip Hop and its influence on Black culture — it simply cannot be denied any longer.

Genocide is taking place in the Black Community, and this is a form of it.

For every foolish act like Plaxico Burress, Ron Artest or Arenas, there’s a Grant Hill, Shane Battier or LeBron James — guys who will be employing Black athletes one day, either in an executive or ownership capacity.

i wouldnt’ve used lebron as an example as one of the postive ones…he’ll be involved in something before long.

if these pro athletes are willing to jeopardize million $ contracts, what would they do if they weren’t playing pro ball? they’d be locked up and/or addicts! no sense and no discipline!

i don’t enjoy watching the games nearly as much. damn near each game has a player involved in some legal sh it off the court/field.

I’m surprised Arenas wasn’t suspended way before he was…the little show he put on before the Philly game shouldn’t have even happened. How DUMB can you be to make a mockery of the very thing you are about to be severly punished for? Maybe that’s his coping mechanism albeit not a good one. I normally don’t listen to Stephen A. Smith, he’s a little too pretentious for my taste, almost obnoxious but he spoke the truth here. Arenas, I gave credit for being one of the smart ones. And I too believe that LBJ shouldn’t be in this category yet as he hasn’t lived long enough yet…

I can’t put it all on the atheletes. Money is money and these guys get rewarded for their physical skills. We want to put them down because they act the same way they always have….? There are some guys who were from poor areas but then there are those who were in the streets and did dirt. I’m surprised there aren’t more cases but the bad thing is that the majority of cases involves the better atheletes. We applaud them until they get caught doing what they always have done. That wasn’t Plaxico or Gilberts first time dealing with guns.

The thing I hate most about media is that people like Stephen A. Smith would not have a job in sports if it were not for some of these atheletes he can crush when their down. You are in a position to bring something positive to the equation. I know the Pro leagues have their classes on conduct but some of these guys got passes so long that they don’t understand the realness in what they do.

Versastylz, what you are doing is indirectly blaming Stephen A Smith for being a reporter and reporting and writing on what you and I both know are facts. The truth is simple, when thinking about the major American sports leagues you have to look at the players that are going down. Tiger Woods for example, there were hardly any negative stories about golfers that I have read before the Tiger fallout, NBA players consistently embarrass the “people they represent”, thats not to say any professional athlete should represent the people but thats the way mainstream America thinks. You look at baseball and steroids but the ugly truth is nobody looks at white athletes as representative of the white culture, but black athletes and their downfall is looked as an exact definition of the “problems facing the black community”. I think its 100% wrong to have INDIVIDUALS who do stupid things represent the rest of the population. Each person is their own individual and until mainstream America realizes this every black athlete or celebrity that suffers a downfall will be looked at as “another black eye for the black community”. I really wish it was different but its not

i think now we are at a time where the black thug mentality is so damaging to black young men that no one will stand for it or make excuses for it anymore. not even sharpton or jackson has defended this guy. you lose credibility if you are always on the offense of white racism but wont say a word against black ignorance that is at this time have a much more disaterous effect on the black community.
what shocked me was Arenas tweets toward sharpton as if he was expecting his support i guess due to his annual donations to sharpton company, just like so many other athletes.
