FYI: Michael Jordan stepped in and kept Hales Franciscian High School, the only Chicago Catholic high school founded to educate African American young men, from closing by donating several million dollars with the help of his (ex-)wife whom also served on the board. He continues to give financial support to this school on the south side of Chicago.

This high school has a 99% graduation rate of educated black men. So he has not only put money into the community but something way more valuable–those educated black men who have been instilled with a sense of community and service. THAT IS SOWING A SEED, giving a community the opportunity to help itself.

He also built a boys and girls club on the west side of Chicago among other things.

Real talk…black athlete’s good deeds often aren’t given the same amount of media coverage as the negative stories or sports accolades.

However,Micheal Jordan has also invested millions in Illinois State Prisons and supports the Chicago Police Dept even during their corrupted tenure when they were beating young blacks for wearing certain colors and baggy clothes. Jim Brown brings a great point. While I understand that one man can not do it alone and that we all need to STAND UP, SIT UP and NEVER SHUT UP, men in their position owe it to where they “came from”. The numbers speak for themselves, and our children (black children) are growing up in poverty – and what is poverty linked directly to? CRIME. Crime leads to prison and the rest is history. It would be nice if these star athletes would stand up for something other than selling products.with all the power they have,they can do alot for people.not just black people,but alot of people who need it.

btw I was just joking on my previous comment but I agree with slice_8706 to them if its not about money then it doesnt matter. And the reason he is addressing them as an example is because other people (rich) are contributing and giving back. It is a blessing to be rich and there is nothing wrong with helping others. Sometimes people just need a little help, they arent always being lazy or ignorant, some people really just need a little help, and people like them can afford it.

Tiger Woods has said that he is not black, so we should not expect anything from him.

Michael Jordan is an example of the success of the “conveyor belt” that William Rhoden wrote about in his book “Forty Million Dollar Slaves.” He said the conveyor belt is designed to snuff out black consciouness in gifted athletes before it develops, so that when one of them does get rich off the sport, it won’t occur to them that they can use their newfound wealth and popularity to uplift all black people.

It also doesn’t help that many people – including some blacks, and including some of the people who have posted on here – think that somehow it is a good thing when black people who have money, influence, or in the case of our President, real power don’t use their resources to help black people. The idea is that a black person who doesn’t reach back to help his own is somehow more “evolved” or “enlightened” than a black person who cares that all black people achieve progress.

QUESTION; are blacks who become successful, r they now obligated to go and get involved in political issues. i mean yeah if they wanna get involved and help out communities then hey, more power to them, but if they dont choose to, y all of a sudden r they ridiculed and called all kinds of names or such. and y does it just have to be black atheletes. how about actors, actreses and singers etc. i dont see nobody jumping their cases

In response to jazzpast, I think we are trying to make the same point. Instead of Mike using his power to create programs to keep these kids out of prison, he chose to invest in prisons because it is by far, the most lucrative. Think about it, crime, drugs, sex and religion are the biggest commodities in America. For all of you who are ready to jump the gun, let me explain about the religion part. All of the evangelist that have stolen millions from the elderly are just the few that have been caught. Those four commodities that I mentioned are what makes the most money, and these are the ones that don’t get the notoriety on the Dow Jones because, it’s America’s dark little secret, and Mike knows this. So, does Mike help or hender??? If there’s millions of dollars involved, I don’t think he really cares….

I want to know where *I* can invest in one! To be quite honest I have no respect for Micheal Jordan. Here’s a guy that has sneakers out with his name for 100+ dollars per sneaker. When they cost probably at most $10 to make, and claims he’s for the kids?!?, get the hell out of here!, When his sneakers first came out a lot of kids were robbed and killed in the streets of NY for their jordans by other kids who couldn’t afford it. Now I know Mr. Jordan cannot address the crimes of the enviest, but dam… he could have spoke out, and reached out to communities and hmmm sold his sneakers cheaper, This is when his sneakers came out once a year, imagine that. Yet he placed himself in the “I wanna be like Mike” commercials and didn’t really care. There’s kids in vietnam and indonesia working hours upon hours in sweat shops and factories creating his brand under the harshest conditions. And he has the audacity to want to be a role model?!?. He may be a phenomenal athlete to the world and father to his children. But I question his integrity. Jim Brown is right. Unlike Magic Johnson, he’s not doing s**t for no one else but himself. Tiger Woods… well he’s Cambo-ga-bulls**t so that says it all.

I hold nothing against Jim Brown for making his case that Michael Jordan & Tiger Woods have done little to give back to the black community, but the same could be said for many in the black community as a whole. What have we done for ourselves?

Black men have notoriously created babies and left the mother’s of their children to fend for themselves and leaving potential black leaders with the impression that the only way they can be “somebody” is to make a rap video and exploit our young black women by having them gyrate half naked around them on a TV screen laying the groundwork for the next generation of lost souls.

I have empathy for Jim Brown’s argument, but it falls flat when faced with the fact that the black community does precious little to help itself out of the mess we are in.

In the 1940′s & 50′s, we were actually making some progress with black lawyers and doctors graduting from prestigious HBCU’s and making a life for themselves in traditional 2 parent households. Then we allowed the drug culture of the 60′s and 70′s to fracture the notion of the traditional family among our people until now we are left with single parent households as the norm rather than the exception.

I grew up poor like many blacks, but I had a father that kept me pointed in the right direction and out of trouble allowing me to be the successful person I am today. And as I have learned through being a Big Brother, so many of our young men have no authority figure in their lives.

Until we learn as a people to stand on our own two feet and take responsibility for ourselves and our race, we will continue to take 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

Besides being multi-millionaire athletes as a common trait, Tiger Woods & Michael Jordan also have in common caring fathers who loved and nurtured them into the successful men they came to be. How many of the people hurling accusations at them for not “doing more” are sticking around and raising their children? And I am not talking about being a “known entity” in their child’s life. I mean actually participating in the development and growth of that child into a responsible adult and supporting the mother of their children in that endeavor. If I were a betting man, I would say precious few.

It is 2009 and we have an African American president in the White House who got there on his own. THe old excuses no longer apply. People “the Man” that is keeping us down is staring us in the mirror every day. Think about that.

Michael Jordan is a piece of work. A phenomenal athlete, but less than the man of character he would have to be to honestly deserve to have kids say, “I wanna be like Mike!” Mike’s a jerk!

Mike gambled, cheated on his wife, deserted his family to spend time with and money on skanky strippers. He doesn’t have time for community service. He’s too busy being a male w***e. He’s now sharing a condo with some blond. He and Tiger seem to have that in common as well. Out of all of the educated, articulate black female professionals, doctors, lawyers, scientist, educators they could not find one black woman suitable for partnership. That says way more about them as men than it does about us as women.

Tiger Woods has never embraced black people or his own blackness. His father married an Asian woman so it’s possible that his philosophy could have also been “don’t marry beneath yourself by marrying a black woman, they’re all ghetto!” Toms always seem to share that opinion. In my opinion, they don’t want strong women. I’m sure both of their current mates are pampered pooches with little to say but yes.

A woman should be able to converse with and express herself to her man without him viewing her as confrontational. That’s what makes us confrontational. When women of any color are treated with respect and allowed to fully interact in her man’s life, contributing positive feedback and striving towards the same goals, the sky is the limit. For those who don’t believe that, just look at the Obama’s and the love they share. His eyes shine when he looks at her and vice versa. And I really don’t believe he would be President without her. She mentored him at his first law firm, so obviously she is as intelligent and qualified to be President as he is.

Michael, Tiger, OJ, Quincy, Sidney, along with so many other wonderful, beautiful black men are lost to black women forever. In their opinion, we aren’t worthy. If a man is that narrow-minded and colorstruck, his goal wouldn’t be to make us happy anyway, so I say good riddance! Money isn’t everything. At the end of the day, if your man really doesn’t care, all the money in the world can’t make you feel better about yourself if you’re in love. Juanita could probably attest to that.

Jim Brown is a god but lets look at what and who he’s talking about when you mention Micheal Jordan remember he lost his dad to some real ignorant people our people black people.i also ask y Jordan does not do more for his folks but with no second thought im not going out of my way for folks who kill for cars money etc. feel this, and woods is not a cat that gonna speak to you about anything major social after all hes very much like a lil kid spoiled even. I’m not mixed, so I’m not gonna judge Tiger Woods for much of anything with the lynch comment. As for Jordan, I mean, the guy’s human. Everyone’s messed up at some point or another. Bottom line, both of these guys rose to fame and riches because of talent. It wasn’t given to either one of them. Would it be nice if they did more for the community, of course. But I disagree with the notion that “You’re rich so you’re responsible for our problems”.

Please get some of your facts straight..First of all, Michael Jordan has done A LOT for the black community in CHICAGO, his home while playing for the Bulls…He is not “shacked” up with some “blond”…She happens to be Cuban…I also agree with Ebbs82, all because they are rich doesnt mean that they should be responsible for our community…BTW, one of the people convicted of killing James Jordan is WHITE…Michael Jordan is a MAN, not a God so the things that he has done while married and NOT MARRIED to Juanita, more than 70% of black men has done as well! So why should he be held to higher standard than the average cheating, panties-chasing man? Because he has money and fame? Jim Brown is entitled to his opinion, but it is just that…his opinion. He starts this dialogue every time the list of top paid athletes is published. Perhaps it is just to get the community talking and thinking.

FYI: Michael Jordan stepped in and kept Hales Franciscian High School, the only Chicago Catholic high school founded to educate African American young men, from closing by donating several million dollars with the help of his (ex)wife whom also served on the board. He continues to give financial support to this school on the south side of Chicago.

This high school has a 99% graduation rate of educated black men. So he has not only put money into the community but something way more valuable–those educated black men who have been instilled with a sense of community and service. THAT IS SOWING A SEED, giving a community the opportunity to help itself. He also built a boys and girls club on the west side of Chicago with the help of his mother and (ex)wife among other things.

Tiger Woods built and opened a learning center and donates golf equipment through Nike to underprivileged youth to encourage more diversity in golf.

No matter how much money and time a celebrity gives, change has to start in the community in each individual’s consciousness with a sense of responsibility followed by action and a commitment to service to give back to their own community.

Real talk…black athlete’s good deeds often aren’t given the same amount of media coverage as the negative stories or sports accolades.

And good for Michael, ’cause when he tried baseball (which he SUCKED at) he moved straight to the affluent white neighborhood (and we have black ones here in Birmingham, Alabama) he never made appearances in the hood, but these dumb ass parents brought plenty of his overpriced cheaply made by chinese children in a sweatsshop for seven bucks assed ugly assed sneakers.
