JOHANNESBURG — For many South Africans, the international brouhaha about whether Caster Semenya is too masculine to compete in women’s track events has been an affront to everyone here, as if a callous world wants to peek beneath the entire nation’s underpants and evaluate what it sees.
Some commentators have found the matter so demeaning that they compare Ms. Semenya’s plight to that of Saartjie Baartman, an African woman taken to Europe in the early 19th century and exhibited like a wild beast under the name Hottentot Venus. Scientists scrutinized her genitals.

Ms. Semenya returned home on Tuesday from Berlin, where last Wednesday she handily won the 800 meters race at the track and field world championships. The victory came just hours after international track officials said that Ms. Semenya, a muscular, husky-voiced 18-year-old, needed to undergo sex-determination testing to confirm her further eligibility.
