My grandmother explained to me that in 1947, all alliances were broken. Whatever tribalism had connected Blacks around the country to other Major League baseball teams-be it area of personal residence, inherited fandom, or unexplained gravitation towards particular players- in 1947, if you were Black, you became a Brooklyn Dodgers fan.

Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s preposterous “color-line” in 1947 and became the first Black man to play pro ball for anything other than a Negro League team.

My grandmother described her quick apprenticeship towards learning the game of baseball (sort of like the one the she went through to learn tennis because of the  Williams Sisters) and said that actually going to see Jackie at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field were some of the most exciting times of her life.

Likewise, I feel the need now to subdue my own petty interest (go Jets!!!) for the interest of my people.

In the wake of the Michael Vick arrest, imprisonment, release, and NFL signing fiasco, I’ve only encountered two types of Black folks in regard to their take on Vick’s situation. There were the Blacks that thought Vick had done wrong, but had also done his time and now should be free to pursue his interest, and there were the Blacks who didn’t believe that Vick had done anything wrong at all.

If you’ve read either of my other two blogs concerning Mike Vick, you already know which of those two positions I’ve taken.

Hell, I wear leather and love steak. The only rights I think animals got are to be on my plate or on my feet.

Now, in going to the Philadelphia Eagles, Vick joins another Black quarterback, Donovan McNabb. McNabb is likely one Super Bowl win away from being on the first ballot for the NFL Hall of Fame and the fact that McNabb himself suggested that the Eagles sign Vick just elevated Donovan’s “ghetto pass” to (pardon the pun) Black Card status.

But what if you’re not Black?

Well, in that case, it might be easy to judge what seems to be wholesale forgiveness of Vick by Blacks as some sort of pathological indifference towards dogs, but that would be wrong. In the Black community, we love our dogs too, just not more than we love each other.

Really, comparing Mickael Vick to Jackie Robinson? It’s no wonder your ilk abandon your young, live in squalor, and leech off of society. Your ignorant views and lack of dignity are beyond comprehension. Wild animals are better behaved. I will never comprehend how blacks in America can support and defend psychopaths and criminals with complete blindness.

You sound like a racist white dude. Believe me there are a lot of you white people out there that do the same thing. You get away with it more because of the color of your skin. There is a family right across the street from me, the dad is drunk a sorry excuse for a man, mom is drunk, and both of their sons are pot heads and guess what? THEY’RE WHITE! So don’t even go there. I’m not prejudice because I’ve been all over the world and this country and I’ve delt with all kinds of people. Believe me white people got leeches, drug dealers, drug addicts and excons too.

IM a eagles fan now, because they gave VICK a chance despite prejudiced views. Out of prison, MV was in a no win situation, if he begged forgiveness- white folks would turn him down. If he said nothing white folks would claim “he’s not answering our questions”. whetever he did was a no win. WHite ppl always think Bruthas owe THEM an apology or explaination – Listen to them sometime they actually say things like ” I want youto explain to ME’ make ME understand, Prove to ME et ect… why the F* do we need to explain to THEM especially when the person asking is usually a NOBODY with NO power, even the ones who have POWER wont be satisfied with the answer.

Crackers have left KIDS in hot cars, a businessman left a newborn strapped in a car seat 98 degree heat w/windows closed as he worked and he walked away without arrest, his defense? “I didnt know she was there”.
YET they want to vilify VICK cause he hurt DOGS, And Gov. S Palen brags about she can Kill Mooses, White boys get time off too DEER hunt, Crackers BET on Horses racing ..and some die due to leg stress and exhaustion->
Sigfread/Roy use Lions and Tigers on stage’for entertainment, honkys lock up Elaphants and Giraffe in a zoo… shut the F up!

Exactly WHAT part of black america likes or identifies with a person that brutalizes helpless animals? Yes, he has done his time BUT that does not excuse what he did. I will not condone his behavior any more than I would the behavior of any other criminal. This article was not only insipid, I find it insulting!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/peacevision1/ peacevision1

I do not condone what Vick did and find it ludicrous to compare him to Jackie Robinson. He served his time and should be allowed to pursue his livelihood. The article would have been better if he questioned the racial divide between Caucasians and African Americans based on redemption. It seems that the majority of Caucasians do not want Vick to have a livelihood and the majority of African Americans feel he should be given a second chance because he served his time. I always liked the Eagles and will continue to like them, but it has nothing to do with Vick. It is an insult to Jackie Robinson to compare him to Vick. Lets not make him a hero. Vick is just another criminal who has served his time and only needs a second chance to make it in life. Lets support him in his effort.

I am not mad at Michael Vick. I am glad to see him suited up and ready to play. However, I am one black American who will be a New York Giants fan until the day I die. Vick can bring that Wildcat offense, as Jon Gruden described last night in a preseason game, all he wants. The New York football Giants will crush the Eagles.

Also, people should not be mad at Eli Manning and his new contract. Manning deserves every penny. GO GIANTS.

The Philadelphia Eagles, organization was really thinking outside the box.It goes to show that their are some white people that are willing to give Black’s a second chance. The Eagles…went against their own(WHITE PEOPLE) so to speak. As a black man i’m glad to see M Vick, get the second chance he deserves.White America, act’s as though he’d killed a human being.I don’t condone what he had done…by any means. But he served his time.He did what a court of law ordered him to do.He doesn’t have to prove anything to the “Court of Public Opinion”

See we as a people need to stop looking elsewhere for help…. My opinion is that if Jackie Robinson would have turn down the MLB offer and said that he was sticking with his Negro baseball League…. We would of had a Negro football league by now….ran and operated by our culture…. Intergrating without a foundation for our people allowed Michael Vick and many other black athelete to be treated too harsh in their league….. I wish Michael Vick would have signed with that other football league that wanted him for the same contract agreement…..
Plus I don’t see the difference between the dog pound killing pitbulls because noone wants them… And MV fighting them

I understand the sentiment that alot of racists whites are using Vick’s assignment to the Eagles as a reason to voice their hate and poisonous opinions like spadespook’s against all blacks. However, comparing Vick to Robinson is a major stretch. All Vick’s presence does is stir up more hatred in a city and state that is one of the most racist in the union. And I’m still a Giants fan no matter what. YOu think black america will support the Eagles because of hate? We don’t all support animal killers.
