New York– Bronx-born UConn basketball star Kemba Walker received a congratulatory call from Mayor Michael Bloomberg after winning the National championship, gaining support and advice from the mayor.
“Remember where you came from and try to give back to the community,” said Bloomberg during the call.
Walker, who scored 16 points in Connecticut’s 53-41 win over Butler for the national title, was also offered a free ticket to the Knicks’ Tuesday game. Walker did not say whether the call was for business or pleasure, but was pleased to know the city supports him.
“I really felt like New York was behind me during this, and I was glad that we gave them something to root for,” he said. “I’m a New York guy, and it’s good when the New York fans are involved, because they’re real passionate.”
