Last week George Lucas made waves when he took to The Daily Show to explain why it took 23 years to make the upcoming film Red Tails about the Tuskegee Airmen. According to Lucas, only one thing stood in the way of the historical action flick reaching movie screens: money.

Lucas spoke candidly about the difficulty of getting a film with an all-black cast to garner the backing of major studios and even larger budgets. Apparently studios don’t think films with black casts are commercially viable here or abroad, and therefore don’t invest big bucks in making them.

Today, Tyler Perry took to his website to talk about his own difficulty making films despite posting respectable box office numbers. Perry ratcheted up the rhetoric a bit more and argued that films with black casts are “on the verge of becoming extinct.”

Why? Well, read Perry’s letter to find out. Check out theGrio for more on Tyler Perry.

all the more reason for Mr. Perry to begin producing better quality films instead of his usual overly dramatic, stereotypical, amateur-esque work. since he’s the most visible/successful creator of black films today, i’d greatly appreciate it if he gave us something to be proud of!

Some sci-fi would work for me…(without the religious bulls**t in the writing).

Good! Until they start making high quality films that portray black people in characters that are worthy of Oscar Awards, people shouldn’t waste their hard earned money to see movies just because they are “black movies.” Don’t get me wrong, there are some good movies out there but some black movies are just plain BAD…

Mr. Perry is helping to put the nail in the coffin of BLACK MOVIES with all of the garbage he puts out. Madea was funny in 1998. But lets move forward now. Mr. Perry needs to expand his work

RED TAILS IS THE 1st ALL BLACK ACTION MOVIE. And this is why, when those of us chose, to dis SPIKE LEE even call him wrong for calling out Tyler Perry for cooning in drag. Yes Tyler Perry movies are in limited theaters, employing black actors and such but should we subtract self respect for a few extra dollars and Oprah love. When a white man agreeing with Spike Lee that playtime is over, you made enough money so now its time to some people uncomfortable along with those who killed Jesus?
Yall aready know what it is.

I APPLAUD GEORGE LUCAS FOR MAKING HIS CONTRIBUTION TO OUR SOCIETY TO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT MEN WHO FOUGHT FOR THIS COUNTRY.
Also,George Lucas had GLYNN TURMAN in mind to play Han Solo but as his Star Wars film got turned away from Universal to Fox,Star Wars got top billing and Turman was out.

Quality black films are on the verge of extinction.

Even his films that don’t feature the “Madea” character are pretty shoddy…I’ve seen about three of them, including “The Family that Preys” and the ending was so unrealistic and nicely tied up that I rolled my eyes at it.

BTW: long time no see of you! Hope all is well.

This isn’t surprising to me, being that there are no all black shows on network television. The small screen is always a determining factor of what goes on the big screen.

You BLACKS are hated the world over! Studios are in the business of making money, NOT losing it. Will Smith always worked BECAUSE his corny ass always made money at the box office!

Green is the ONLY color that Hollywood CARES about!

Tyler’s crappy movies is helping it along.

  • SimplyComplex_87

agreed! Daddy’s Little Girls was the same way…extremely predictable.

i feel a little bad for the more established black actors Tyler Perry uses in his films, because the work isn’t really a challenge for them…they’re not reaching their full potential in those dumbed down roles. but on the flip side, at least they’re getting work. it’s kind of an uncomfortable trade-off to witness…

yes, all is well…i just usually keep my posting on weekends and holidays to a minimum. thanks for asking :)

I sometimes wish that black films will add other forms of music besides rap, r&b, smooth jazz, and funk like rock, metal, etc. A lot of black films use the same type of boring hip hop or rap music and it gets tiring.

Black movies have always been extinct (that’s just my opinion). I think that African-American actors and actress, directors, producers and etc need to get together along with a small portion of their money to create movies that people can see. Tyler Perry is cool, I liked Madea at first, but it is time to retire her and find a stronger character to spin off or something. It doesn’t bother me that there are parts that are religious within the movie, just give me a good movie. I like Spike Lee’s work along with the other African-American directors, writers and etc. But it is long overdue black men and women from Hollywood, get yourselves together, start writing, producing, acting and all of that stuff on your own. Build an empire that way, put the movies on DVD, network and do what you have to do…One thing I do not want to see is another movie like “Soul Plane” either, that was not cool….just bring it on. I don’t want to see another “Monster’s Ball” either…I know that folks can do better. It is time to show movies that show strength, love, positivity, laughter without cursing, anger without having to go for the guns and without placing ourselves in a stereotype…can ya dig. Lets do this!

Yes, definitely a Catch-22 for actors! And again, the predictability is one of the reasons I don’t watch his movies.

He tries to cover too many topics in his films. Every social ill shoved into one 2 hour drama. I do think he is trying to offer more substantive movies. Hopefully, his efforts will inspire new writers.

Pretty soon all there will be is realty tv. Which is a disgrace.

“I thought that as black people in Hollywood, this is just our reality, but I quickly realized that this is not racism. What made me realize this is I had a conversation with Mr. Star Wars himself, George Lucas, and he was telling me that he was having the same problem with Red Tails. I was blown away! Red Tails is an important story about, not just black history, but American history about the Tuskegee Airmen. It has an all-star African-American cast, including Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard, which opens this Friday”.

I think Mr. Perry is wrong about the fact that it is not racism, and that’s the sad part about how well instituted in our collective psychic racism is. So that even the victims often end up endorsing it without the least clue. As stated in “Black Labor White Wealth” the Law of Exclusion and the Law of Meritorious Manumission were amongst the many laws and codes that white people designed to define, redefine, refine, implement and institutionalize the permanent enslavement of black people even after Emancipation came about. (My paraphrasing).

The Law of Exclusion said that no white person was to help a black person to benefit from what racist considered “white society”. And the punishment for those whites who refused to corrupt their minds with such evil was just as severe, as for those who sheltered a run-away slave.
So Mr. Perry is wrong if he believes that the application of White-Supremacy-Racism, (and all of its tentacles established to keep blacks in a certain socioeconomic place) is simply about “undeniable denials to blacks from whites”. The Law of exclusion ensured that the average white person was programmed to enforce and maintain it, without the slightest clue, year after year.

To disprove my point Mr. Perry simply needs to go to Hollywood with the idea of re-working the Tuskegee Airmen story to show that for every insult that those men endured, they were welcomed by at least 2 more whites, whose kindness enabled them to do what they did. He needs to make benevolent whites the stars in the Tuskegee Airmen’ lives. He needs to show that more whites will benefit, directly and indirectly financially and to their egos, and then he’ll never again be fooled as to how pernicious White Supremacy-Racism is, in this Post Racial age.

White Supremacy-Racism is also for the business of mis-educating black people about ourselves. Thus our children will continue to kill themselves, from lack of any worthwhile knowledge about their past. To that end, black African’s contribution to the civilization of humanity, has still not entered conventional textbooks, though most now know that that simply is not true. And because the truth is so hard to find, it means that the role models for our kids to emulate, (whose focus were most likely geared to gain wealth) often never learned the truth about their race themselves, therefore are teaching our kids (by actions) how to practice the law of Meritorious Manumissions without the slightest clue.

With that Law/Code, blacks could be rewarded by whites for working against the best interest of blacks overall. Thus one could gain his freedom if he revealed knowledge of a plot of insurrection to his master. He, and maybe his family then get their freedom, but fails to see that the system of slavery did not remove the automatic refusal of society to see black skinned people (free or un-free) as equal human. Consequently, his freedom was often even more treacherous than when he was a property on the Plantation where the White man could vouch for him, if he were caught by slave catchers, who could get a good price for turning him in. If a black person was able to use his voice eloquently, he could then be used to deny the plight of himself and his people. One could also invent something to benefit white society. And on and on, with all kinds of ways that should only benefit whites. Consequently today that silent, unwritten, unspoken instruction gets transmitted, especially to those amongst us who’ve done the best financially. Most don’t have the slightest clue, how their views are gradually changing to be PR persons for covert racism, so that their wealth ends up doing just what Meritorious Manumissions intend.

I am curious. What if we give Tyler Perry the benefit of the doubt that he tried to submit something other than Madea to Hollwood Execs. We all know Madea went from sold out plays to moving dvd’s of the plays and that caught the attention of hollywood. But if Tyler actually tried push something else other than Madea would he have as hard a time as Lucas? I am sure it would be even harder.

All those gangster flicks, men in drag, not funny coon movies, and cops and robbers are playing out, watching them is like eating the same meal of violence and stupidity, all you see is fools killing for the white mans fiat money he created out of nothing so they can buy cars, bling,w***es and they wind up dead or in jail, and a few wind up top of the world of material wealth and live happy ever after with the damsel in distress sipping a glass of wine on an Island.Hollyweird is dead, creativity and art is dead, they have to do remakes, cause they have no more quality movies like they did in the past, dead like the music, they want to push interracial trash with passive buck dancing Negroes like the new movie with the dyke queen [KING] Latifa,or remakes of Negroes fighting for whiteys wars, ban Hollyweird, read a book.

I have always said and I will continue to say that the type of movies Perry makes are not a big deal for Hollywood. When you look at the numbers, I can understand why studios won’t invest $80 million or more for a movie that only make $30 million or so on average. Granted these movies only cost $10 million or so to make, but the point is they aren’t doing blockbuster type numbers. If they were, I promise you, you’d see studios being more willing to invest big dollars into an all black film.

Now the reasons these movies don’t make huge sums of money is up for debate. But the bottom line is the numbers speak for themselves.
