Editor’s Note: This is the final installment of a two-part opinion series on Spike Lee’s criticisms of the film industry and Tyler Perry’s complicated relationship with black moviegoers. Yesterday’s installment focused on why Terrell Jermaine Starr feels Spike Lee’s recent outbursts make the film producer a certified hater.

Part II

I had no idea who Tyler Perry was when I first saw him perform in his stage play “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” at the Fox Theater in Detroit 11 years ago. A friend of mine had some extra tickets and invited me to see this tall Black man dress up as a sassy pistol-packing grandma named “Madea.”

“It’s really good,” my friend told me. “You gotta come see it.”

With nothing to do that night, I reluctantly said, Yes, but my expectations were rather low. Neither Eddie Murphy’s “Nutty Professor” nor Martin Lawrence’s “Big Mama’s House” tickled my fancy, so I was not expecting much nourishment from seeing another brotha dramatize our already hyper-stereotyped Black women.

But, quite surprisingly, the play’s pronounced Christian themes and “I-can-do-all-things-through-Christ” narrative evoked the worst memories of my teenage battles of low self-esteem and bouts with an emotionally and physically abusive relative. More importantly, the play made me believe I could actually heal inside and share my newfound joy, unashamedly, with the rest of the world.

When Perry walked out onstage dressed in fresh Air Force Ones, jeans, and a well-fitted print sweater, the shoulder-to-shoulder packed audience erupted in thunderous applause. And so did I.

“Hollywood doesn’t know who you are and doesn’t care to know you,” he said. “Thank you so much for coming out to support this play and I have much more in store for you.” He spoke several minutes more before thanking us again and leaving the stage with his small yet committed cast of Black actors and actresses.

I bet no one in the audience thought that Perry would go on to turn that gospel-infused stage drama into a multimillion-dollar media empire. That succes was to go to the highly educated John Singletons and Spike Lees of the world — not Perry, a high school dropout without a single academic credit from a fancy film school in L.A. or New York.

(He did eventually earn his GED.)

Somehow Perry, who spent time living in his car while trying to transfer his notebook-written script to a stage, found his own audience, cultivated it, and made films that drew them into theaters nationwide by the millions. Unlike many Black directors before him, Perry didn’t look to Hollywood for approval. He sought and earned the support of a particular segment of the African-American community that affords him the independence to film and finance his own films in Atlanta, however he wishes, without needing a single dime from an L.A. studio.

Unlike Spike Lee, Perry’s sharpest critic (and hater), he didn’t waste time “fighting the power.” He sought the support of his own people and became a power broker instead.

Tyler Perry doesn’t try and cast his films with highly paid actors and actresses he cannot afford to pay. He hires great talent and keeps them working. His directorial taste is indeed an acquired one, but as one critic says, “[His films] are a force of nature.”

And I am certainly not suggesting that we should support Perry just because he is Black. You do not have to like his films. (I mean, not every white person likes Quentin Tarantino.)

Still, critics shouldn’t denigrate his work just because it doesn’t reflect Afro-centric renditions of Shakespeare, and they shouldn’t chalk up his success to “the white man has anointed him the Negro of Hollywood because he creates films that make Blacks look like buffoons.”

Remember, the brotha is based in Georgia.

What these critics fail to consider is that it is Perry that brings Black audiences to the box office. He does not ask White executives in California to do that for him. But even as Perry racks in strong box office numbers and continues to maintain a devoted fan base, his films are criticized for having weak character development, being poorly written, and lacking intellectual depth.

For many people, Perry will never be good enough. But Perry doesn’t care about many people. He cares about a particular segment of his people. In turn, they love and support him unconditionally.

Rather than critiquing his films and wondering, “Why does Perry do so well making these “crappy movies,’” you should be asking him, “How do I get millions of people to support my work just like they support your work?”

It is the distinction in these two questions that determines whether you are a business man or simply jealous. Or more accurately, a hater. Many people commented in my Spike Lee article that Perry’s critics are not haters. Perhaps, but if you are still confused, let me break it down for you:

Objective critic: “I do not like the way Black women are often depicted as down-trodden sistas struggling to get over herself to find a good, educated Black man who actually likes sistas. There needs to be more intellectual development in his female characters.”

Fair enough.

Hater: “I made a film about dignified African Americans and Black folks didn’t come see it, but they go see Tyler Perry.”

See the difference?

Perry may never be considered a candidate for an Oscar or Golden Globe. Most successful directors aren’t, and to be honest, I do not think Perry really cares. I am sure he would be pleased if his work one day earns one of those golden statuettes, but you don’t see him crying or cussing to high heaven about it, do you?

When reporters asked Perry why he didn’t go the Hollywood route, he replied, “I didn’t want to play the game.” So he became a game changer. And if you do not like the “games” Perry has created, fine. Don’t hate the playa.’ And don’t even hate the game. Create your own.

And on that note, may Madea say, “Amen,” and “Halleluyer.”

When Black men accepts a “man” in a dress as normal and celebrates it,
it will be a sad day for “true” civil rights and a day of celebration for the
racist infiltrators in here whose desperation grows more and more obvious.

NewsOne’s intentional censorship of actual Black people on this site and
continued allowance of disrespectful racist infiltrators and fake black poser postings,
along with other potentially destructive practices makes their “actual” agenda obvious.

Tyler Perry is to be applauded for it was Perry whose play brought so many African Americans to theaters for live plays. The plays nor the movies are filled with real violence and there is no profanity, just real clean fun for the sake of lasughter. If people feel that there is no subsyance in Perry’s works, really, so what! People need to laugh and have fun with all the violence, race hating and inter race hating. Besides, I do remember as a child, my parents and other adults laughing at the antices of Flip Wilson, without/with being in drag. When will people, especially Black peoplek stop hatin; and start celebrating the success of our people?

So he became a game changer. And if you do not like the “games” Perry has created, fine. Don’t hate the playa.’ And don’t even hate the game. Create your own. ~ Best part of the post. I agree. Stop complaining and create what you want to see. Whether we like Perry or not he is giving black actors a chance to keep working. And for that I applaud him.

Celebrate a black man in a dress?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pantherg08/ pantherg08

And why should we celebrate this guy again? He puts out comedic and religious junk food that USUALLY attracts the most simple minded of our people, and this is not coming from somebody that did not try to support his work at all, I have seen his plays, movies, and tv shows and I have concluded that they were terrible on my own!

It is astonishing how Spike Lee has trouble getting money for his products that are actually infromative, unique and well written, and yet TP can get money from Hollywood to produce products that are coonery, badley written and badley acted with no problom.

Every George Lucas could not get extra funding for his movie Red Tails, a good movie about the Tuskegee Airman, but TP has unlimited resources to put out garbage???

Not liking and having opinions of ones work does not equate being a hater, I dont like Hitler, does that make me a hater? I dont like Obama does that make me a hater? Epic fail by the writter of this article…..

To critique movies, is something most intelligent people do, period. I do not believe most people like seeing a movie, TV show, or anything stereotyping their people. This is what we see in Tyler Perry’s movies. To say Spike or anybody who critique Tyler Perry’s movies, are haters, just don’t know what they are talking about. I do not go to the theaters, nor look at any of his movies in my home, and I do not allow my child to look at the movies, because I do not want her to become brain washed to believe this is a normal way, for black people act, and it is not funny.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/614_eastsider_84/ 614_eastsider_84

Here is my two cent. I first would like to say that there is some hypocrisy in the author of this two-part series. You constantly called Spike a ‘hater’ (an overused term in the black community in my opinion.) rather than being a objective critic, but throughout both writings it seems you did more personal attacking on the work of Lee’s work than sharing constructive criticism. You sound more like a fan rather than a neutral observer. That no matter what Spike say or do, you will always be “Team Perry.” I could be wrong but that is what appears to me.

I’m not much of a fan of Tyler’s work but I will give him credit in how he goes about a lot of things Independently. That is something we need more of in the black community. Instead of begging to be accepted, create our own route.

Here is a question we should also be asking ourselves. When will we stop being afraid speak out against something that could be plugging our communities negatively? One can say that Spike is a film director with a Civil Rights leader mind. Don’t we overly used the N-Word? So whats wrong in asking Quentin Tarantino to give an explanation of why it was used so many times in movie Jackie Brown? Aren’t black soldiers often forgotten about in past American Wars? So why not bring awareness of the lack of African Americans in the war films? Aren’t we stereotyped enough as pot smokers who rely on Jesus too many times? If so, why not ask for a better representation? And before you and any other say that he came out and hated on Tyler Perry, go back and watch the interview he did with Ed Gordon. He was asked a QUESTION and even when he answered he didn’t address Tyler by name. And when Gordon did follow up on it, Spike was talking about how we had a black president and how we shouldn’t be going back to the Amos & Andy days. But some get the impression that he went on a tirade and just started attacking Mr. Perry.

And since you wanted to bring up lack of blockbuster hits Spike has had, Society in general tend to be more into dumb down films as opposed to educational ones. Spike isn’t known as an entertaining director. So of course some will roll with Tyler instead. Just like some whites probably would go see a comedy film about a pig flying over an educational one about George Washington. So if anything, that makes me applaud Spike even more. Because he could have easily ‘soldout’ for sells but continued doing what he felt was best.

With all that being said, one person opinion doesn’t define all. Say what you want about Spike, but I applaud him for being a black man who wants us to do better instead of a “negro” who remains silent about portrayal that can paint our image. Your two-part series did more nit-picking and ‘hating’ instead of fairness of the work (or lack of) from both man. If any should write about the two directors, it should be a neutral writer who isn’t bias towards. Not one who just coattails to one or the other.

  • Wayne Wilson

The fact that we even need to debate the artistic talents of Tyler Perry vs Spike Lee shows how far the Black community has fallen. His material is the artistic equivalent of a bag of Dorritos. Sure its taste good for a the couple of bites but does nothing for you in the long run. I’m calling a spade a spade and its my opinion that Tyler Perry movies sucks bricks compared to Spike Lee’s worst movie (Girl 6). I guess I’m a hater also if I think 2Pac blows the lids off Lil Wayne as a rapper. My goodness how far our people have fell to be celebrating this garbage.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

    Well said!!!
I am not a fan of Tyler Perry’s so called medocre body of work!!!
Just because a black person who has made it in the entertainment industry does not mean we all as black people are supposed to support this!!!
Toure said it best that Tyler Perry’s work is cinematic malt liquor!!!
It appeals to only a certain type of black person —- The uneducated black person, The gay black man, the majority of black women and so forth!!!
I have an opinion that I do not like Tyler Perry’s movies, plays, the horrible television shows that are not even funny what so ever.
That is my opinion, NOT HATING!!!
Plus I could care less what the so called black community has to say!!! We are as black people are big dynamic group of diverse people. We are not supposed to like, support, and agree with everything!!!
If we are like that, that shows that black people are one dimensional!!! We are not clones, talking monkeys, people who do not use their own brains. Having an opinion means that you are using your brain. SO I SAY TO THOSE BRAINLESS BLACK PEOPLE WHO THINK WE SHOULD LIKE EVERYTHiNG BLACK— A BIG F*CK YOU AND A MIDDLE FINGER!!! Nobody tells me what to like and think!!!
What a terrible aricle from this so called journalist!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

You need to get a life!!!
Because you like and dislike does not mean the next man or woman has to like it!!!
What planet do you come from!?!?!?
I cannot stand stupid black people like yourself!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

You must live in the so called low income class ghetto!!!
Not all black people live in those areas!!!
Some of us do live in nice areas, and actually have been raised in 2 parent homes (and that I mean both bioligical mother and father)
Not all black people have the same experiences, not all black people are from the single parent households, not all black people come from the hood!!!
So if it hits home for you, then that is you, not the next black man and woman!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

I will say also that I am a big Spike Lee fan!!!
His movies over the years were great. People forget that Spike Lee was the hardcore black man that did not take any type of BS from the white media!!!
There is no comparison from Spike Lee productions to Tyler Perry’s BS medocre body of so called work!!!
And people forget that there are other great black writers, directors, producers out there!!!
Tyler Perry also help bring out that BS movie Precious (which was horrible!!!)
I am not saying to hate Tyler Perrys crap, I am saying I will not support Tyler Perry’s work!!!
We all have a brain!!! We as black people do not have to support everything something a black man or woman made, if that was so, we would support every black criminal out there, if you see the comparision!!!
Having an opinion is not hating, it is expressing on what you like and dislike!!! And for me Tyler is on the dislike list!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Skagdubois/ Skagdubois

Call a spade a spade, Tyler Perry’s work is vaudeville at best. We have allowed ourselves to become bamboozled. Until we begin to recognize the groundbreaking work of our veracious laureates such as Spike Lee, Gordon Parks, Melvin and Mario Van Peebles, John Singleton, Ice Cube, Kasi Lemmons, Aaron McGruder to mention but a few artists, we will continue in our blindness to believe black folk have achieved the pinnacle of movie-making.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3KD3U2KZS3WVFGH6W5ZPOTDRAE TimH

I’d take Tyler over Spike any day.

Spike is an angry black man who hates white people.

Tyler is a great actor and director who makes me laugh. Spike makes me want to punch him in the face.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aricherson/ aricherson

In your article yesterday you gave spike Hell about saying Hollywood doesn’t know a thing about black people but in this article you heap praise on Mr. Perry for saying it. That shows your bias. Secondly the problem that I have with his movies are that they are over used sterotypes, and simplistic at best. How many times can we be subjected to the drug addict, abused woman, brother doing the right thing but can’t catch a break nonsense. Been there done that lets move on to more important issues that we face as people. Or movies that tell some part of our rich history? When I seen school daze I wanted to attend an historically black college, perrys films make me feel that if I’m not praying nothing good will happen for me. Some of us are not southern Baptists and believe other than how perrys films preach to us. If I wanted a sermon is go to church not a movie theatre. That is all!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

    Nicely said!!!
Not all black people are so called Christians!!!
Not all black people are from the ghetto!!!
We as black people come from diverse backgrounds, we are not all the same with the same life experiences!!!
We as black people do not have to support everything black!!!
I refuse to support anything that I do not like just because a black man or woman made it!!!
Having an opinion is not being a HATER ( A WORD THAT NEEDS TO BE DELETED!!!)
I refuse to listen, like, or agree with every black person in this world!!!
I have my own brain, likes an dislikes!!!
So here is a middle finger and a big F YOU to those brainless, uneducated, ignorant black people out there who thinks that every black person is the same in this crazy world!!!
If you disagree, I could care less because what affects you in your life does not affect mine!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

    WHAT?!?!?!?
Get the hell out of here!!
    Respect what!?!?!?
Material possessions do not mean a thing in the form of respect!!!
A drug dealer has those as well, so do we respect the drug dealer!?!?!?
    GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Notorious drug dealers gave out turkeys on Thanksgiving, so is that person giving back to the so called black community!?!?!?
And I am so tired about hearing the so called black community —- NOT ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE FROM THE HOOD!!! Give it a rest!!!
Black people need to take care of their own family, their own households!!!
I or anyone else are not responsible for other peoples issues!!! IF A LOT OF REAL BLACK MEN WOULD TAKE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN, WE WOULD NOT HAVE A LOT OF ISSUES IN THE BLACK FAMILY DYNAMIC!!! IF A LOT OF BLACK WOMEN GET OFF THEIR LAZY A$$, CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATE TO HAVE A FAMILY THE ISSUE OF CHILDREN LOST AND IN DESPAIR WOULD NOT BE IN FULL EFFECT!!!
NOT SAYING ALL BLACK PEOPLE, BUT A LOT OF THEM OUT THERE!!!

I skimmed over Starr’s 2nd installment. His infatuation with Perry is obvious. To disregard Lee’s work is not what a real journalist does, but I forgot we aren’t dealing with a professional. He is a stan of Perry’s, which is quite nauseating. Its almost like he wants to audition for a role in Tyler’s new movie, or something. You probably will get it, all you have to do is keep taking off your shirt during the screening. If you peep Tyler’s movies, a black man is always half naked (shirtless) in one of his films, which I’m sure they have to retake over, and over again. :D

Anybody hypocritically trying to call me anything but a Brotha because I won’t “praise” a dude in a dress has got worse problems than picking the wrong user name.

It’s telling that he feels compelled to try to say something disrespectful (to those who have read my posts, Shoutout13 is a brotha and a brotha who loves and respects true Black Sistahs, not desperate imitations of the “real deal”) in reply to my opinion.

A man dressed up as a woman never has been and never will be a substitute for a real woman. Likewise, someone ironically addressing a man but trying to address him as “a female” because he is not “celebrating” a man in a dress really needs to take a good look at his, her or its own mental health including the fact that you tried to position being a “female” into an insult. It is because I am a man that I know that a real woman is a blessing not an insult.

With anything you will have critics. Some people don’t like or get his work. They have the right, but atleast he has black people working. If you really have a problem witht the way he is portraying black people stop complaining and give an alternitive image.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shariese-Hurd/100001852350588 Shariese Hurd

I agree that we don’t all share the same experiences. And I am not feeling most of his work, but why is it his job to represent all black people. I think it is because of the lack of diversity of black people in media, movies and television. But I think it is a bit unfair to blame him becauuse of that. How many other blacks are making movies and showing diverse black people. So I think the problem is not enough black people being shown in positive light and not enough black people making films. So I think the answer isn’t to try to make Tyler make a different type of film, but to get others to put more blacks in films. And other blacks to make movies and screen plays.

Hey dumba$$, do your research first before talking about Spike Lee!!!
Number one, Spike Lee was not a fatherless case — his father Bill Lee was a noted jazz musician who did a lot of the musical direction of Spike Lee’s early films.
He is a college graduate, if you have seen the movie Crooklyn, it was based loosely from his life and that his mother and father were married till his mother lost her life to cancer when Spike was still in grade school. That Spike’s father raised him and his sisters and brothers alone.
SO YOU IGNORANT BASTARD NEGRO — DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!
People like you do not remember when Spike was the REAL PRO BLACK BROTHER back in the late 80′s to 90′s — when white Hollywood was doing everything to disrespect him!!!
When Malcom X came out, movie theatres were trying to divert ticket sales from him to other white movies!!!
    DO YOUR F*CKING RESEARCH!!!
At least Spike Lee made great diverse movies with great stories!!! NOT THE CINEMATIC MALT LIQUOR TYLER PERRY MAKES!!!

Sorry I cannot not celebrate Tyler Perry what so ever!!!
What for the only reason because he is black — GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Making money and doing a hustle is one thing, but the drug dealer also does that!!!
I am not going to praise him for that!!!
Tyler Perry’s body of work is like crack — NOT GOOD AT ALL!!! And he has his junkies sweating him at every corner!!!

For the record, Lionsgate is an independent company formally founded in Canada (Vancouver, British Columbia) but now based out of Santa Monica, California. So no, it isn’t a ‘big playa’ in Hollywood.

When Black men accept a “man” in a dress as normal and celebrate it,
it will be a sad day for “true” civil rights and a day of celebration for the
racist infiltrators in here whose desperation grows more and more obvious.

The only other thing more harmful than what Perry has ‘done’ is the homophobia/transphobia and sexism in your comment.

And you know this….how? He’s just expressing an opinion.

It’s better than being a noxious, hateful homophobe like you. All that people like you do is make other blacks look bad due to your homophobia.

Boy, here we go again with the homophobia. Aren’t you tired of being hateful towards you black brothers and sisters who are GLBT?

So a black man dressing up as a woman is somehow causing “anti-black population growth”? What kind of crap are you smoking (and no, I don’t want any?)

  • Anonymous

Tyler Perry has put a lot of black people to work. However , the images in his movies some do stereotype blacks. he also has had positive messages. Me personally based on what I read in the CHRISTIAN Bible do not agree with the homosexual lifestyle or seeing men in dresses. Be it Tyler Perry or Martin . Some like to toss out words like racist and homophobic . I have family members who are homosexual. But do I display antipathy, contempt, prejudice, aversion, and irrational fear toward them? No because that is what is involved in being homophobic. I love them. I simply do not agree with the lifestyle. God is love. But God has standards . The Bible condemns a number of sexual sins such as fornication , adultery and homosexuality. If you want to call God homophobic , that is between you and him .

Leviticus 18:22 – “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.”

Leviticus 20:13 – “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

Romans 1:26-27 – “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.”

Ah, that Tyler Perry is a smart one. I was wondering why this push lately to accept his crap. Then I see the preview for his latest “Bitter Black Woman/Horrible Black Man” movie. This is free advertising at its best. Or did NewsFun and BV get a cut for writing these promotional pieces? Did Jawn Murray ghostwrite on this one?

Exactly. I have never identified remotely with any character or situation in anything Tyler Perry. I can’t name one person in my family or circle that acts like that (and we’ve got some real eyebrow-raisers in some parts of the tree).

These arguments remind me of a movie that came out in 84′ called a soldiers story. Wikipedia’s description states:

“Conflicted, light-skinned Sergeant Waters (Adolph Caesar) ruthlessly heaps abuse upon his men. He calls them all “worthless geechees”, but he especially relishes torturing the jovial and highly talented C.J. Memphis (Larry Riley). Sergent Waters especially cannot stand the light-hearted behavior from the fellow black men in the platoon.” ~ end quote

One thing for certain, those who are uneducated among black folk outnumber those who are educated. In certain parts of Africa and the Caribbean this phenomenon you folk can’t agree on is called class distinction.

Tyler in essence has become the poster child for what many educated would label as: “urban decay at it’s finest, or a poor example of us moving forward.” nonetheless Northerners hate this recent depiction of themselves gaining notoriety, thus the divide…

If I had to vote on this whole Team Tyler/Team Spike foolishness, I’d have to take the route I’m accustomed to taking. I’d opt for neither! Why? In all truth, I believe it has a Caucasoid scent on it! Smells like an animal activated the divisive influence that’s presently at work. Just as they did with fair skin against the dark skin. Their poisons come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Ultimately they will use us against each other.

I believe that with TP’s access to the broader base of African Americans and of course Spikes no nonsense approach towards addressing the black mans dilemma, they should really team up and create a BLOCKBUSTER. An Armageddon of truth that would quite frankly make the white mans grand pappy turn over in his grave and our ancestors come out of theirs to celebrate.

Moral of the story: Use different flavors to get the truth out, but by all means get it out!

I like the discussion that is taking place within Black America. Black America we are continuing to evolve as we continue to leave the shadows of slavery. Part of our evolution is that we will not like the same things. Just because the movie is written, directed and produced by someone black does not mean we have to have a million man march to the theater. Individuals should be allowed to make their own decisions on what they want to watch.

Mr. Perry’s movies speak to a specific group of people with specific experiences. That should not say anything negative about Mr. Perry or his audience. There is nothing wrong with disliking Mr. Perry’s movies or not being a part of his audience. The Black experience has grown and changed in immeasurable ways. Instead of complaining about the subject matter of Mr. Perry’s films perhaps someone will rise to make movies about other black experiences. May be a return to the Black Cinema of the 90s in which films ran the gambit of themes and gave us choices. Until then we should continue to have these debates and hopefully others will take up the challenge of portraying our great people on the screen.

So Perry is able to make money by appealing to the lowest common denominator in the black community. I know crack-dealers that do the same and I’m not going to celebrate them either.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

I liked what you have said, I cannot agree with everything you said, but I do like what you have said!!!

But Tyler Perry working with Spike Lee to do a production together is like oil and vinegar — that is like teaming up Albert Einstein (Lee) & Forrest Gump (Perry)
    It would never work out.

But like I said before, I am a die hard Spike Lee fan since the movie She’s Gotta Have It.
And Tyler Perry core audience is geared to the simple minded, religious freaks, gay black men and a big number of black women. In the case of his black women fan base goes all the way from the most educated to the simple minded ghetto trash (PLEASE BLACK WOMEN DO NOT TAKE IT THE WRONG WAY HOW I AM SAYING IT)
In the case for a lot of black women ( NOT ALL) his productions have a lot of the demographics that appeal to a whole broad range. If you look at his productions, the black women range from the educated to the downtrodden black woman but in these cases the black women can find many different examples and can find something to relate to with the characters good and bad, where as black men are STEREOTYPED TO THE T!!! That Tyler Perry viewpoints on black men are so horrible I think he is a closet man hater (we know he plays for the other team!!!)
No matter what the characters for black women in his productions can find goodness — the black men – especially the dark skinned black men do not even have a chance in hell!!! That the dark skinned black man usually is the woman beater, the low life, prison record, etc.
Now with any black person with half a brain that can dissect his movies can see that Tyler Perry does not show any type of good black man type role models (THIS IS FOR THE DARK SKINNED BLACK MEN) HE KEEPS THE DARK SKINNED BLACK MEN STEROTYPE ALIVE!!!
So celebrate this fool — HELL THE F*CK NO!!!
And for this so called bootleg journalist who should not be biased is very biased and just a fan of Tyler Perry, you celebrate all you want, but I will not. I am not a follower or a leader, I am an individual with my opinion and use my brain and not influenced by others on what they like just because!!!

This lucifer69 character is just a simple minded creature who is just talking out the side of his mouth!!! People like this and I use the term loosely should not even be taken seriously!!!
Classic example of a person who has not left out their so called neighborhood, have not experienced outside resources. Probably have not even graduated from high school, etc!!!
Even when people like this spew their negativity it sounds like they are mentally challenged!!!
And there is really no means even try to debate a person who is mentally challenged, they would not even get the simpliest point of view what so ever!!! Basically this person is like a talking money (what I call the parrtot syndrome) Parrots can talk but have no brain capacity to think and understand the basics!!!

Don’t all members of society have a right to entertainment?

Don’t get me wrong I don’t care for his movies so I don’t watch his movies. I’m tired of complaining about his subject matter. I will just have to wait until someone eles makes a movie for my version of the black experiance.

Tyler Perry so called medocre body of work is a modern day of Step and Fetchit!!!

And like I have said many times, the simple minded creatures are the ones that flock to Perry’s BS productions!!!

But I guess it is okay because they put the little Jesus message and black people think this is a good role model for entertainment!!!

It is such a shame that the majority of black people are the simple minded people that are just followers, never using their brains, acting half human half animal!!!

Black people who find what I say offensive are the ones that fall in that category of the simple minded feeble individuals. People like this never can understand that not all black people are living the same experiences, that live in the ghetto, that come from single parent households where the children do not know their father, that the no good fathers out there who do not take care of their responsibility, where the no good black mother not showing their children a proper example on how to be a decent citizen. THIS IS A TRAVESITY!!!

I remember back in the day when the Cosby Show came out, when so many black people thought that the Cosby Show was a fantasy that black people did not lives that type of lifestyle with 2 black parents (both biological) educated with good kids that live in a good neighborhood. I myself grew up in a Cosby type lifestyle, my parents were not doctors and lawyers but we were middle class and lived a good life and can say I had a happy childhood.

This is for the older people on these boards who can remember if that so called family member was able to get out of the ghetto, get an education, get that well paying job, able to move out of the ghetto (if that is where they came from) and move to the suburbs – they would call that certain black man or woman selling out, not being black enough, forgetting where they came from — BULLSH*T excuses!!!
So many black people thrive on the negativity, black people are the harshest to other black people, not other races!!! So there will never be anything called black unity WHAT SO EVER!!!
So many people on these boards are the ones who keep the stereotype alive, the ones who will never think outside the box, the ones that want to stay in the ghetto frame of mind — AND TYLER PERRY IS NO DIFFERENT!!! Now he has money and fame does not mean that he still does not have that ghetto mentality!!!

If most bloggers would use their dislike of Tyler Perry and channel that energy into making some positive changes, it would make a lot more sense and purpose. However, like most people, talk is cheaper then action and that all most here do is TALK….I am sure that innovators like Tyler Perry and others that created opportunities for themselves don’t really care what those that stay stagnant do. Just as those motivated to create the social networks, those that invented most of the technology we use today and others laughed at, hated on and disapproved by the few, Tyler Perry will continue on until HE decides he’s had enough…In the meantime, most here will STILL BE HERE…talking out the side of their necks…amazing!

While I can agree that TP doesn’t always portray MEN (see “The Family That Preys) in a good light, but you seem to have forgotten “Daddy’s Little Girls” where Edris Alba definitely plays a good man and dedicated father. The main character in TP’s sitcom “House of Payne” is a dark skinned man, while he is ignorant (because it is a comedy) he definitely has the role of a Fire Chief, father and husband. LaMann Rucker plays a GOOD GOOD man(Yum) in the “Why Did I Get Married” series, so miss me with all this hate of the dark-skin man!!

Please understand that TP makes movies for Black women, therefore the conflict is going to be a Black man. All movies have some type of conflict or no one would watch them! As a man if you don’t like them, don’t watch them!! They are not for you!

The great thing is everyone has an opinion but how can you judge everyone who does not agree with your opinion simple minded. I enjoy Tyler Perry movies for the most part, I also enjoyed Red tails, I like Jumping the Broom, and I enjoyed Malcolm X.

May I change the script a little, I love Bill Cosby’s comedy, but I also enjoy Eddie Murphy’s comedy. How about this, I love the Three “Stooges” who were considered comedic geniuses.

How do we unite to support each other with such huge divides? Here’s an idea, respect that everyone is different and is entitled to their opinion. We may not all agree, but stop the nonsense of thinking because you have an opinion (as enlightened as it may be) that it makes it a fact. As my mama use to say, everything ain’t for everybody, but respect can be given to all. Be careful before you judge someone based on their likes and dislikes…You may find yourself on the receiving end of judgment and not like it.

If I were a businessman, I’d be singing Tyler Perry’s praises all day. he is excellent at marketing a low-cost product towards a specialized market and giving the people just what they expect.

But I’m an artist, a film student, and a film fan. And Tyler Perry isn’t is the best – or even really a good – filmmaker. I’m sure he’s aware of this himself, and at this point, he doesn’t care. Michael bay and George Lucas can get away with it, so can he.

If I’m going to celebrate Black filmmakers, personally, I’d prefer to celebrate ones that make better films, regardless of how much box-office they’ve made. And there’s enough of them (Gordon Parks, Mario Van Peebles, Spike Lee, John Singleton, Lee Daniels) to where I don’t feel I need Perry to fill a “void” of sorts.

Points taken…. And if you don’t mind let me ‘not play’ but be a GODLY advocate on this one…

and again, I’m not voting, just stating the facts without leaning to the left or the right.

Alright, I know it’s difficult to accept, but Mr. Perry’s ideas are in the limelight right now, bitter or sweet, his caricature depiction of the black family has center stage, an quite frankly it caters to an older generation not excluding women in general and for those men who have defected [homosexuals] their sick, whole nother issue.

Not too long ago, another pioneer of the black cause had the mic, he definitely wasn’t afraid to use it, especially towards setting matters straight. His uninhibited, ‘in ya face crakkka’ theatricals, catered to the youth of our time. It was needed… It paved the way for brothers like yourself to not be afraid, to speak your mind on injustice and the black holocaust.

Mr. Lee was on a mission to “do the right thing” as far as he understood it…. He used it for the greater good by bringing together a few well known facts, he gave us a truthful portrayal of what we all knew on some level. ie bamboozle, jungle fever and always with a northerner twist as some would say.

As I’m sure you already know, he offended a lot of “white folk” back then, unlike our dear brotha, TP [and as some of you are labeling a [T]heatrical [P]unk] has done.

Question: Is he really attacking the the masculinity of his own tribe or is he pointing out the frailties of a black man?

Sometimes I believe that the main reason why our women embrace Perry’s message over Lee’s message, wasn’t so much that he painted the black male role model in a bad light…No, never that! I believe the main reason is: unlike Spikes message being more than entertainment, but an outright call to ARMS [to do battle]. I believe to our women, Perry’s message comes across as some sort of reality check towards us NOT OPENING a door we ain’t prepared to CLOSE! And their simply applauding his genius towards telling the black male, or masculinity in a black man, the bitter truth however simple it may be.

The moral of what I’m seeing in these two analogies is:

Don’t be a fool, we need GOD to fight our battle! Education won’t do it, revolution never knew it! Repeat after me…GOD is our strength!

    Psalms 53:11

The fool says in his heart,
    “There is no God.”

    Proverbs 12:1,2

1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but he who hates correction is stupid.

    Psalms 9:9,10

9 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. 10 Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

    Psalms 10:1,2,8-15

1 Why, O Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.

10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. 11 He says to himself, “God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees.” 12 Arise, Lord! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account”? 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand.
The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.
