7 Out Of 10 Black Americans “Love” Their Dad

By News One June 19, 2009 2:21 pm

In the official NewsOne / BlackPlanet.com poll, seventy percent of African-Americans say they “love” their father.  With over 2,500 respondents, 11 percent said they “hate him” and 19 percent said they never knew him.

Those numbers might seem surprising given the reportedly bleak state of the Black family in the United States. On Father’s Day last year, then-Senator Barack Obama pointed out the problems:

“If we’re honest with ourselves we’ll admit that too many fathers are … missing. Too many fathers are MIA. Too many fathers are AWOL, missing from too many lives and too many homes. They’ve abandoned their responsibilities. They’re acting like boys instead of men, and the foundations of our family have suffered because of it. You and I know this is true everywhere, but nowhere is it more true than in the African-American community.”

Indeed, 56 percent of Black households are headed by single parents, according to data the U.S. Census Bureau collected in 2006. 91 percent of those single parents are mothers. Across all races, there are 18 million children in the U.S. living apart from their fathers, 34 percent of whom told the National Fatherhood Initiative that they don’t know their biological fathers at all.

But even though African-American families are often headed by single mothers, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on research that showed that, “African American fathers, more than any other group, are more likely to maintain lasting relationships with their children when they don’t live with them.”

Perhaps that bit of good news, amid all the bad press African-American fathers get, is the reason why 70 percent of African-Americans say they love their dads.

happy father’s day to all the dads out there. anybody can be a father even a women but its something special when your a dad. dads know that we don’t need praises for something that we suppose to but its nice for those who appreciates and think of us for things we do. the statistics in news one are not as bad as some people thought about fathers in the black community. im glad its out now that dads are there for their children.

I grew up w/o my father and I hate him! Fortunately, I had my stepfather who did a wonderful job raising me. Too many black fathers not stepping up to men and take care of their kids. It’s not enought to just pay child support but you have to be there as a father. Hopefully, black familys will get it together.

One love to all of the Father’s out there. We know everyday is Father’s day and it is our responsibility to live up to what a Father should be, but take this day, acknowledge it and celebrate, because we have become close to an extinct group and when this day comes each year, it is a reminder and a priviledge to be honored.

We are being inundated with negative press about Black fathers. I decided to write about the lessons my father has taught me and how they are very different from the stereotypes being portrayed. The “essay” is entitled Lessons From My Black Father: A Father’s Day Letter. Please visit the attached link to read it. Thank you.

I find it funny that some people tend to have no control over their emotions. They tend to think its all about them and not the world. That kind of thinking puts a lot of brothers in situations that they should not be in. I’m not giving an excuss, because there isn’t one for absentee fathers. However, for those who have kids and their fathers are in their lives, please understand women its not about you. Its about the growth of the kids. A child need both parents, regardless of what many thinks. History has provend that. Not to take away from the single mothers or fathers. But in these days a mother can not teach a boy how to become a man. And a 30yr old boy can teach a boy to become a man. Only a man can take the boy to the next step to manhood. Oh! I forgot, a woman who acts like a man can’t either……..For the absentee fathers! Sister you need to know how to pick between a man and man wantabee. You are getting the materialistic things mixed up with men qualities. To tell the difference you must know what a man’s qualities are. Once you find that out, then the younger and older sisters will become to understand how to pick a real bra.
