Chanequa Campbell, left, Brittany Smith, right

A NewsOne Exclusive

Last week’s shooting of an alleged marijuana-dealer at Harvard has exposed the elite university’s long-standing underground drug trade to the harsh light of day.

Justin Cosby — the 21-year-old victim of a May 18 murder believed to be an attempted robbery gone awry — is said to have been selling drugs to students. Two Harvard seniors, both women, have been connected with the incident.

Brittany Smith, 22, is the girlfriend of alleged shooter Jabrai J. Copney, 20. Chanequa Campbell, 21, is alleged to be connected to both Cosby and Copney. The two other alleged assailants have yet to be found.

On an otherwise quiet campus, this violent drug-related crime and the alleged student involvement has publically bared what many at the college have been aware of for years:

“Everyone’s like, ‘What was this random guy doing on campus?’ It’s because Harvard students are buying drugs,” says a recent graduate, who requested anonymity. “There are people on campus who are supporting this operation.”

Black Female Student Singled Out

According to this graduate and others, Campbell was long rumored to be a part of that scene.

“It was something that was whispered about on campus months before the shooting — that she sold cocaine, ecstasy, hard drugs,” says the source.

While Brittany Smith will still graduate in June, Chanequa Campbell, a sociology concentrator from Brooklyn who received National Merit Scholarship, as well as scholarships from The New York Times, Coca-Cola, and Goldman Sachs, has been banned from campus.

Campbell is suspected of being the link between Cosby, the victim and alleged marijuana dealer, and Copney, who has been charged with the shooting. Authorities also said someone gave Copney a Harvard access card, which allowed him to enter the Kirkland House dormitory, where the shooting took place.

Campbell states she wasn’t involved in last week’s events and is being wrongfully linked to the murder. She denies selling drugs to students, and says that it was not her card that Copney used to enter the dorm. Campbell told the Boston Globe in a telephone interview: “I do believe I am being singled out. . . . The honest answer to that is that I’m black and I’m poor and I’m from New York and I walk a certain way and I keep my clothes a certain way. . . . It’s something that labels me as different from everyone else.”

This isn’t the first time the university has been accused of racial profiling. Since the murder, black students have reported receiving extra scrutiny.

“Lately I’ve definitely been getting some interesting looks from white people, security guards and other security personnel,” said Malcolm Rivers, a black Harvard student and classmate of the Campbell and Smith.

“As a black man on campus, you understand that that’s part of the territory.”

Rivers went on to say that while black female students like Campbell and Smith might not be as overtly looked upon with suspicion, that they might face a different kind of stereotyping in the wake of the murder.

“People are going to be like, ‘These girls brought the hood with them,’” Rivers said.

Bringing The Streets To The Top Schools

Both Smith and Campbell are New York City natives, hailing from Harlem and Brooklyn respectively.

Campbell is an alumni of the Prep for Prep program, which takes students from tri-state area public schools and prepares them to attend elite private and boarding schools. The students in Prep are generally from poor families, and come from low-income neighborhoods in places like the Bronx and Brooklyn. After Prep for Prep, most of these students end up at the best colleges and universities—if not Ivy League, then certainly first tier. Prep for Prep works to prepare students not just academically, but also mentally and emotionally for the adjustment in environment. But leaving behind past lives, especially the pervasive drug culture, sometimes proves problematic.

“In these elite schools, there are organized activities that are not good. There are drugs and alcohol present. So it’s possible to continue whatever you were doing in the ‘hood, or even pick it up if you weren’t exposed to it,” says a source within Prep for Prep.

“Sometimes it’s not even the case that it’s bringing the ‘hood with you, so much as it’s you finding what you were exposed to in your neighborhood in a different environment,” the source continues.

“This Is Not The Wire

Indeed, students at Harvard who sought marijuana or, for those who could afford it, harder drugs like cocaine,  weren’t likely to run into any problems getting it. Students from all socioeconomic backgrounds , from athletes and elite social club members, to pre-law students and student newspaper reporters, have been known to indulge without too much concern for the consequences.

“People thought, ‘This is not The Wire. Guns are not going to come out. There aren’t going to be repercussions,” says a current student, who also asked for anonymity.

But the events of last week brought home the stark reality of the consequences of welcoming illegal drugs into the ivy gates: a young life extinguished, potential prison time, reputations called into question, and an academic career cut short.

The dean of Harvard College, Evelynn Hammonds, sent a letter to the university community last week pledging to address the situation that led to the shooting.

“I intend to work with student leaders and others to address the nature and risks of illicit drug use on campus, to underscore the importance of safety and security practices for the entire College community, and to examine the adequacy of existing policies relating to student life,” she wrote.

With finals completed and this year’s commencement ceremonies only a week away, the effects of any efforts to reform the campus drug culture will likely remain to be seen until this fall.

Ok….This is the the first time I have ever posted a comment on any thing I have read here, but let me be the first to say that I am the product of a few different inner city schools, and 1 in a college town, “Michigan”….White kids party waaaay haredr and do waaay more harder drugs than are even excepted in the black community of teenagers! Coke, crack, heroin, extacy, all that is taboo, whwer I come from as a teenager!!!! But when I wen to one of the biggest wht schools in Michigan…..all of the wht kids were doing it!!!!! Come on, people…..dont make it a hood thing!!!! Where I come frm, if u do any drug other than smoke weed u r concidered a crack head! And r frowned upon in a maaaayjor way by ur peers! So ask ur self……”Is it a black thing, Or a white thing, being down played???”

oooo harvard university big whoop. Just because your in harvard university doesnt make you legally smart. Those kids and most of every one else that has attended harvard are just your average individuals that just have the patience to sit down and memorize what they read in a book before a test. That dont mean they have good common sense or legitimate knowledge… just book smart thats all it proves so why would any thing like this be shocking? Think of harvard like a piece of clothing. Its just the label with all the praise and all the rest of the material… well its the same as any other brand.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mrbluntforce2/ mrbluntforce2

it was just a matter of time…mixing book scents with street savvy….if they really want to get to bottom of it, they would take all that money they making and drug test every student and teacher, but then everything would come to life then wouldnt it….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NoPaperGangstas/ NoPaperGangstas

The only difference between them a white students is they got caught while being black. Anit no difference between black college students and white college students. White college students will do the drugs and alcohol in front of the police , dean, presidents, and because they are white, no one will say nothing. The white administration won’t call out their own students because they don’t want to lose the support of alumni. There is drugs in EVERY COLLGE in AMERICA. ITS TIME THAT THE AMDMINISTRATION STOP ACTING LIKE BLACKS ARE THE ONLY ONES DOING THE DRUGS. WHITE KIDS PROBALLY JUST HIDE IT BETTER BECAUSE WHITE PEOPLE ALWAYS LOOK THE OTHER WAY TO PROTECT THEM. This story is not news to me.

Drugs are everywhere… It’s not a black thing it’s a drug thing… It’s unfortunate that these young ladies may be involve . Unfortunately they will definitely be chastised by association instead of the hard cold facts. I resent that because they come from NY they are targeted as bringing drugs to the Harvard campus… I’m sure drugs have been there since the 60′s… Lets not be fooled by the crap on the blackboard….

As black people we need to make better decisions. We all know about the double standard of partying and drugs for Black students at PWIs (Predominately White Institutions). The key is to make sure the Black students do not make the wrong choices in handling themselves when involved in the partying and drugs. These students where willing to take that gamble to sale drugs or be involved in some way, shape or form. They know the consequences, just look at the hoods they are from. All I am saying is that they have to be aware of the situations they are putting themselves in before they are in them. Black students can party while at white colleges, just remember, when you cross the line, you will be persecuted and prosecuted FIRST, before the white counterparts. Thus, we have to act accordingly, you know there are many who don’t want to see Black students succeed anyway.

It is funny how the only people that get pointed at are the two black girls that happen to be known by just about everybody on campus. Is it a justice or smoke screen?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MS_D86/ MS_D86

im so sick of this racism s**t! other than that, i really don’t have much to say about it…jus that some people need to understand that harvard is not the only campus that has drugs…quit tryna single out the blacks and look at the whites bcuz they have and sell it just as much. don’t believe it? go do some research on it and im pretty sure u’ll find out that them white boys r the ones that keeps the good s**t. where u think some of the blacks get it from?…HOW U LIKE DAT?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Sweet_Lipsz/ Sweet_Lipsz

This is just ridiculous. I do not feel bad for any of them. These young ladies go to Harvard! A prestigious university that is predominently white. These women had the opportunity to get a degree that would be smiled upon by employers all over and earn them some major money within a few years. Yet they throw away scholarships, grants..money people like me need to better ourselves, all for some cocaine and weed? What were they thinking!!??

No! we are not guilty by association.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/WhM4BlkFm/ WhM4BlkFm

That’s right, get into trouble, get caught or be a suspect and immediately play the race card, scream racism and profiling and blame whitey cause after all we’re the cause of all the problems and injustice in the world.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CruZanViXen/ CruZanViXen

This is NOT suprising. MOST elite colleges around the U.S. have a problem with students using DRUGS. During my sophomore year, the school found out a couple of Hawaiians were growing weed in the dorms for the last TWO years. It isn’t suprising. It is the norm.

I am not saying it is something to ignore, but society needs to stop acting like only the poor or minorities do drugs.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/littlebabymia/ littlebabymia

Let’s talk BOUT THE RICH ELITE WHITE KID THATS KNOWS NOTHING GOING TO hARVARD BECACE OF HIS PARENTS CONNECTIONS AND MONEY. Someone please write about all the true fens at Harvard not this. Black students always make the news what about the stupid ish white students do. This is just sad.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Heart_Mender67/ Heart_Mender67

@Lauren-TRUE….I have my own mind and thoughts, know matter how wrong you think they are. And yes I do know or have known drug dealers pimps, ect.. My best friend that I had known all my life sold drugs. I tried to get him to stop he wouldn’t so I had to leave him alone. Since then he has been in and out of jail numerous of times, caught a murder case, got shot, and all the other bulls**t that goes with the life. Me, having the same, if not less of a chance that he did, joined the military, got my honorable discharge, earned money for college and got my degree. what I’m trying to say if you don’t look out for yourself who will? Are we guilty by association?..Yes, sometimes we are, especially when we ignore the common sense that god gave us.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sweet_sista2000/ sweet_sista2000

Oh please! Obviously there was a “market” at Harvard for them to constantly be selling it to these Harvard students so don’t make it seem like they brought the hood to Harvard. Don’t get it twisted, drug use amongst white college students is veryyy common and usually involve harder drugs. In any case, what an unfortunate situation.

So another case of “Well the black did it”.
I love how white kids never do any wrong (or people for that matter). Even though the ratio of black to white at Harvard has to be something like 99 to 1 or higher.
This is the life we live.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzpast/ jazzpast

Lets be honest here, we cannot keep using the race card in any situation.when you are a person of color in an elitist institution, and the reason you are there is to fulfill a quota. Please mind your own business and keep your eyes on the price. We all want to be given an opportunity to go to such elite schools, and some of us just cant let go of some people that we use to associate back home.We all know that white folks uses more drugs than anybody thats why the injustice system is the way it is. However, when your foot is the door on being set for life. Please dont mess it up for your family for the rest of us.. . We as the public doesnt know the whole story behind this crime. Therefore, lets reserve judgement for both parties and stop using the race card like its a slot machine in Vegas. We need some self control, acoountability and responsibility as adults living in the white man’s world.

Yet another example of just how alive and well racism is in the US; and we want to be sure that we continue to export that brand of racism globally.

Now whether the girls were involved or even connected or not remains to be seen; however if the boy was indeed a drug dealer then he happily lived down to the negative stereotype of society and I feel no sympathy for him nor his family.

Black folk need to get smart and realize that we keep ourselves back..this is 2009, and we still sayin the same s**t..Im black, have been for 35 years and know the diff between right and wrong…I understand that some folks lives are in ruins;of no fault of their own,but not everybody, NOT EVERYBODY! These students had an oppotunity that so many dream of and because of their arrogance, and greed for power, status; programs that got them there may be hard to obtain for now on.. OK, maybe the white man brought the drugs, maybe not..but when are blacks going to stop being the puppets for whomever is bringing the drugs…white, foreign,etc..its not just black and white anymore..and blacks will remain in the back as long as we keep placing blame everyone but ourselves..i am aware their is racism in our world, but i must say, i have dealt more with rascism within my own race..My home was violated,my car was stolen…and guess what!!!!!? It was my own kind…WTF

I have read many comments as well as the article. I am saddened not only by this story but also at the sad mentality we are having at this story. I look forward to the day when an issue like this will be a shock because it was Harvard students participating in these despicable acts not BLACK people bringing the “Ghetto” to a prestigious institution. Also if you’re leaving a comment with your disappointment try not to show your own ignorance, love you bp!

The fault lies in these students. You are at school to get an education, not sell drugs or help assist someone sell drugs. This boys mother should be ashamed of herself. She should have been talking to him, especially since he resided at home with her. I truly believe she knew he was selling drugs, because he was helping her with the mortgage. Whoever gave him the access card to get in da school building, needs to be accomplice to murder. This is NOT a white or black situation. This is cut & dry.

As this war on drugs continue, we are constantly reminded that it’s not just in the black community, it’s everywhere. What will the excuse be but we have to study harder and longer and we do drugs to stay awake and alert. Isn’t that why some people started using meth? And of course, they’re going to look differently at the poor black students. If these allegations prove to be true, I feel for those whose goals are the same but have been able to stay away from the negativity of the hood around every corner. They will have it much harder now because of this unfortunate incident including the program. Where this child was once the pride of her environment and younger people may have been told if she can do it, you can too, she is now an embarassment. White people will say those blacks should’ve been here in the first place, especially if they can’t afford it. You know I’m right.

as long as we remain shrouded in a cloud of blame shifting we will continue to “feel” oppressed as a people. As black people we need to wake up to the reality that being black in America despite its rigorous challenges does not free us from obligations to the status-quo…or accountability to law as a means of preservation for society’s peace and harmony. These students had a tremendous opportunity to attend an elite institution which could potentially be a defining opportunity in their lives and the lives of their families. Instead what results is being caught up in a web of vice. I cannot objectively conclude their role in this situation since allegations and assumptions are the mindsets of backward people but what i can say is as you define a goal, as you envision a prize it must come with the realization that sacrifices must be made to achieve it. Certain acquaintances and friendships have to be let go.What business of friendship or relationship could a woman like Brittany Smith possibly have had with Copney. I yearn for the days when Black women stood proud and intolerant, when black women defined what their expectations were of their man, when women represented pillars of wisdom, today i observe relationships in which women who are set out to achieve goals in life wasting their time and money bailing out no good brothers from jail and nursing wounds that could have been avoided int he first place. and i know someone will be quick to say that’s the way society makes it for these black man to stray. That society is unjust, that society is unequal, but then i would encourage you to research the statistics, black on black crime (particular murder) far supersedes any murders perpetrated by other races on blacks. We are becoming disconnected as a people. We need redefinition and a renewal of mindset, psychological emancipation from the burden of insidious stereotyping which lead us to view ourselves with distortion and our actions as a result lead us to being viewed with distortion. We need to love each other, so much that when we see how precious our lives should be, it will be difficult if not impossible for us to take each others life. I am not shielded nor oblivious to the injustices that exist in American society, but we cannot confront or eradicate these issues until we approach them as a united force sharing a united bond.

Look if they guilty they guilty. I am so sick of the B.S The 1st thing we do when we are “succesful”is leave the hood! We can care less about the people and children we leave behind. Run to the same comunity that see you as “your” people you left behind. There is enough wealthy BLACK people to set up a state/ community/ system that can be for our people aka Chinatown , Hebrew, Italian, Russian, etc these are communities that police themselves. I live in Brooklyn and some of these same streets that was drug infested that our middle/upper class black people moved away from, lol are now full of the richer white people that so many left the “hood” to move near go figure. Out of all the yrs I lived in brookly I never ever seen anyone from the NAACP or any other blacks of wealth or fame, except those running for office. When we that are still in the “hood” get arested and killed for nothing, for just being black in the hood. Where are you! I am knot a scholar in anyway and can barely spell but common since is take care of your own. Stop looking down on us that are still in the hood stay and lead hands on so we can rise as a people. Xmas donations and thanksgiving turkeys isn’t giving back that is feel good stuff for the guilt of your hearts. So b4 you get all “black power” for the people who are offended these girls may be part of this, remember the stop and searches that go on all day everyday. Fight for all my people not just the 1s that may be excepted into your middle/upper class hoods.

Here are 2 young women who were offered the once-in-a lifetime opportunities that a lot of urban youth can only dream of. And what do they do? Piss it all away. Not only did they embarrass us, but they embarrassed themselves.

Enough with the excuses and scapgoating. So what if “whites are doing it too”. We’re not talking about them. We’re talking about you! And face it folks…when did we last here about White people getting caught up in this crazy bullsh*t??

    That’s what I thought.

With all do respect, I must first say that this article reads terribly; let’s go back to journalism 101! And more importantly when trying to piece this article together, I came to the conclusion Brittany Smith has nothing to with the shooting, she plans to still graduate from Harvard, and the only thing she’s guilty of is her association of knowing the shooter (her boyfriend). What you are doing dear journalist is running yet another African-American name into the dirt. Again I repeat she is only guilty by association so you blasting her full name, picture and ties to this unfortunate event is defaming her integrity. Did she make a bad relationship choice, yes! But is she or should she have to worry about future job interviews or any career path where the employer may Google her name and see this article with her full name and picture tied to a fatal shooting? You my dear journalist are feeding into the stereotypical calluses of the African-American community involving her. You could have easily written this piece stating, “The shooter’s girlfriend was also a Harvard student but she has no connection to the crime and will be graduation in June.” This is the same information, less damage. I don’t have any connection to Brittany Smith, never knew her but, I feel for the woman after this article. Next time, take the ramifications of this article into consideration and think about your full name and picture being posted on an online article in connection with a girl or guy you may know but have nothing to do with the situation. Let’s not post “guilty by association” information any more; I can see this being a law-suit waiting to happen.

I, too, agree with truly1luv’s previous comments. Not only was this article poorly written, it was negligent to Brittany Smith’s character. The journalist approached her connection to the alleged shooter irresponsibly and without reason. Smith is a soon to be Harvard graduate that is indirectly labeled as a wrongdoer in this crime. Guilty by association is not a justifiable reason to mention an individual’s full name and picture in an article that discusses a murder, even if the name is casually mentioned. It would behoove all journalists, especially the one, to consider the ramifications and weigh the consequences of his or her actions prior to injecting an obviously innocent party to a horrific crime.

How could one seek a higher education and date thugs at the same time? It seems like these booty shakers don’t like smart black men, they always go for those who embarrass them at one time or the other. It’s their own fault. No it’s not guilt by association it’s guilt by ignorance!
