Writing about Black people is hard. There are more than 40 million of us in the United States alone, each running around with different ideals, interests, occupations, and income levels. With all of that going on, things are bound to get complicated. So how can the American news media—not renowned for its ability to cover nuance and complexity—engage with all of that?

Well, the short answer is that they can’t. Or perhaps won’t. Instead, the vast majority of coverage of Black people sticks to easily digestible narrative themes: Overcoming adversity, committing violent crime, engaging in secret elitism, complaining of real or imagined victimization by The Man, allowing the family unit to disintegrate, and so on—these are the types of Black people stories we’ve come to know and love.

And when some subset of people doesn’t fit into one of these pre-set narratives? Well, they get the Loch Ness monster treatment: Some kooky blog or other disreputable source might rant and rave about their existence and importance, but you won’t find CNN or the New York Times taking much notice. But we true believers, we know they’re out there. And so I present without further ado, 7 Groups Of People The Media Pretends Don’t Exist:

The Black Middle Class
Before anyone pipes up with a reference to The Cosby Show, try to remember that it ended more than 15 years ago. And the Obamas don’t count either—there’s nothing “middle class” about being the President of the United States. So what we’re ultimately left with is a case study in the coverage of extremes. CNN’s Black in America 2 offered a prime example of this in its choices of subjects: They showed the obligatory uplifting story of poor inner-city children being inspired to achieve their dreams, and later shifted gears to offer a peek into the world of the Black elite—mansions and debutante balls for all. Black families that fall squarely in between these two ends of the spectrum remain invisible.

Gay Black People
Did you hear? Bible-thumping, Obama-loving, and gay-hating blacks put the nail in the coffin of gay marriage in California. Yes sirree, according to coverage of Proposition 8 in several mainstream media outlets, all these black folks are very socially conservative and don’t hold with that same-sex relationship nonsense. Oh, unless they’re closeted gangsters on the down low or something, creeping behind the backs of their wives. Other than that, nope—no healthy, happy, non-dysfunctional gay or lesbian relationships among African-Americans. Move it along folks, nothing to see here.

Missing Persons Who Aren’t White And Female
Because only little white girls disappear, apparently. If you’re male, or a person of color—or to be honest, even just a brunette—and you have the misfortune of being kidnapped or otherwise going missing, good luck ever being seen or heard from again.

Non-Christian Black People
To hear the mainstream media tell it, black people are all just a-wavin’ our fans and catchin’ the Holy Ghost in the pews, like extras in a Tyler Perry movie. That’s why any politician who wants the black vote must give adequate attention to The Black Church by showing up at a Christian service or two. There are, of course, Black adherents to other faiths, not to mention (horrors!) Black atheists and agnostics. In fact, a CBS survey found that at least one-third of American Muslims are Black! But as usual, the compulsion to paint Black people as a monolith, combined with a dash of historical nostalgia—(The Civil Rights movement was centered in churches! Their strong faith in Jesus carried them through slavery!)—keeps coverage of Black people and religion safely insulated from such nuance.

Educated, Married Black Women
If the constant hysterical repetition of the scary statistics is to be believed, you’re about as likely to run into a happily married, educated Black woman with children as you are to be handed a pot of tax-free gold by a leprechaun riding on the back of a unicorn. The most recent incarnation of the “Black women with degrees are condemned to spinsterhood” article appeared on MSNBC earlier this month. It helpfully explained that “many” Black women with advanced degrees remain unmarried—no specific number, just the ominous “many.” The piece then went on to tell that 38 percent of highly educated Black women born between 1961 and 1970 are childless. The other way to say that statistic, of course, is that 62 percent of those highly educated Black women do have children. But I’m guessing a headline like “A Solid Majority Of Highly Educated Black Women Will Marry and Have Children” just wouldn’t get as many clicks, or be as fun to recycle and reprint several times a year.

Africans Who Are Not Poor, Starving, and Living in Small Villages
Did you know that nearly 40 percent of people on the African continent live in urban areas? That means cities, like New York, San Francisco, and Chicago. No? Of course you didn’t. How could you, when most American news coverage of African countries looks like a bunch of extended “Save the Children” commercials?

Black Police Officers
No surprise here—the existence of black police officers is simply inconvenient, from a narrative standpoint. How else but by ignoring the existence of minority law enforcement officials could media outlets continue to crank out new spins on the old classic “Black Folks Have Historically Fraught Relationship With The (Racist) Cops” story? Don’t believe me? Take a look at this photo, from the recent racial dust-up surrounding the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr.:

henry-louis-skip-gates-arrested-071609-by-bill-carter-demotix-images
Your eyes are not deceiving you. That is, in fact, a black man wearing a police uniform in the bottom right corner of the photo. But the mainstream media pulled a Beyonce and directed everyone’s attention to the left, to the left, so that they could continue with their regularly scheduled programming.

Maybe someday the mainstream media will catch on and start covering these groups in a meaningful way. But until then, keep an eye out for these characters lurking in the background of the usual stories, hoping to be heard. Because seemingly imaginary people are people too.

They also never talk about poor inner city white people. They always make it seem like all poor white people live in trailer parks even thought most major cities are at least 40% white and a lot of them are broke as hell on drugs and don’t graduate high school. The graduation rate for white males in the Cleveland public schools in 11% nobody ever talks about that.

So true and i get tired of it all the time. they like to focus on the things that would either divide us or downing our image while in the opposite seat they(white people) always elevate themselves. But it’s ok, i’m not one who cries about racism or unjust and whatnot. They do almost control everything in this country and they will do anything to benefits themselves. Black people need to take control for themselves too and not let others speak on their behalf but we know it’s not something that can come easy when we keep striving for their acceptance. It’s sad but you never know, things tend to change.

I can give you all of them except the gay black people…how can America NOT know they exist given how particularly flamming they are? As for the non-Christian Blacks? I think maybe if Christians shut up for a moment and stop being so judgemental about those of us who AREN’T Christians, maybe someone would actually hear agnostics such as myself. ;)

It’s another case of propaganda by the media basically. They know the average person doesn’t read and uses television to get information. From that bad perceptions are formed against Blacks in general. That’s why more Blacks need to get into key positions in the media to change these stereotypical perceptions of Blacks in this country.

My boyfriend is an American citizen raised in Nigeria(via his father), and he gets pissed about the way Africans are portrayed in the media. He’s always telling me about the huge cities, twice the size of Atlanta, skyscrapers, clubs and spas. The beaches, the mansion he lived in with servants and being chauffeured around and boarding school. Nigeria in particular is filled with millionaires. He’s not just bragging to get ladies or whatever his mother is African American and backs up all his claims. Africa has it bad parts like any other place, but the entire continent is not a third world nation. Many of the Africans I know are very intelligent and successful.

I don’t know whats up the statistics concerning educated Black women, without a husband or kids. Maybe these women do not want either or just one or the other. There are many Black women in my college, and the ones I call friends do not have kids yet. I do hope they hold it off until/if they get married. I read somewhere that the Black women with good jobs only want Black men with good jobs, but usually there aren’t many available Black men in there in there class. And alot of Black women do not date outside their race. I love Black men, but I’d rather have a Japanese man who treats me the way I want to be treated and who is on my level(financially, educated, values) than to have a man that Black and thats all. Cus some Black men with money have been known to date outside the race in a heartbeat. More often than Black men, Black women are loyal to their men. Maybe Black men really are intimidated by successful Black women, who know? But there are good, smart, and hard working Black women out there and I’m glad they made to the top. A man and kids do no make a female, a woman.

I am African and the statement about Africa here is VERY TRUE… I am from one of the most beautiful cities in Africa(maybe in the world) , and some ignorant people out here always ask me dumb question about Africa like, it was some jungle full of animals and leaves.

To my African brother below, I believe you bro. And it’s so sad that even some Black Americans believe the stereotypes about the CONTINENT (meaning BIG and DIVERSE)of Africa. There were more than a few African brothers on my last ship. Some from Togo,Nigeria,Kenya, and South Africa. My buddy from Kenya,Tom,was showing some photos from home on his laptop one night. I was like were is that Atlanta? He was like “Man,that’s Nairobi! You keep believing what the US news shows you about Africa”. We laughed but he had a serious point.

I feel the same way about about white women… I love my sisters but why would I want to deal with angry, nasty, bitter Shaniqua when Becky is nicer, sweeter and lets me in?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Arrielle2007/ Arrielle2007

to Anthropological, Im so sick of Black men with this stereotype of the bitter and angry black woman. Not all of us is that way.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Clever_Queen/ Clever_Queen

Black women are not bitter, nasty angry just because they can be bitter, nasty and angry. More and more for whatever reason, Black children are being raised alone by Black women. The girl child is being taught to be stronger, less dependent on a man, and generally its them against the world. But its not just Black women, White, Latino whatever, girls raised in this condition generation after generation seem to have that mentality. I’m just saying Black women are more loyal to Black men then Black men are to women. A Black woman can be hurt over and over a again by a Black man and wont think about dating outside the race while a Black man will do it in a blink of an eye.

    @Clever_Queen,

Maybe more Black woman SHOULD date outside of their race. Look at Brazil, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic, they have been doing it – even though race is still a problem there, but at least they are mixing.

Its time for Black people in America to wake up and realize that Black people are not going to get their own provinces nor states in Amerikkka.

I will give Black people in America credit: ya love to try to unify even though its an idle success.

What is left of the so-called Black race in America….and what is left of the so-called White race in America will eventually dissipate among other races in America. So fcukin what?? Most of ya so called Black people are not even pure Black anyway even a lot of ya are close to it.

Combat Feminism first and then go back and worry about Nationalism.

Feminism is killing the nuclear family structure via those federal programs like section 8 that pay to keep men out of the house hold with the government being the new daddy.

Strong independence doesnt exist because most so called Black people dont own natural resources nor supermarket chains to grow and produce their own sh%t.

Alas Nationalism will never erect itself with Feminism still dividing and conquering in the so called Black diaspora in Amerikkka.

With such an important topic like that i can’t believe these negros below( Clever_Queen and Anthropological) are actually turning this into one of those–as we usually tend to get, mindless gender quarrels and I know people are free to write whatever the want but with the same repeating bulls**t–Black women are bitter or black men are not loyal, i’m telling you it’s getting extremely annoying at best. Words that are not even theirs but picked up from deranged minded fools who are usually looking for nothing but more clicks of attention to themselves. It’s a sad thing overall but it also tells you how easily these people can be manipulated.

I had posted on a forum here at black planet and the topic is ARE BLACK PEOPLE MORE RACIST THAN WHITE PEOPLE.
The forum in general had no base and lacked substance. I mentioned on the post how bias the media is toward people of color in particular. I raised the point that I hadn’t heard about the women in NC being murdered until I read it here at NewsOne, I felt this was very bias and a disservice to all people of North Carolina.

I also raised the point that I was looking at the Nancy Grace show right after I had read it here, and all they talked about is the MODEL who husband by the police account had killed her. This story was hitting the media every hour on the hour. In my view a life is a life. Whose to say because she was a model that her life is more precious than the Black women in North Carolina. Poor journalism and poor reporting for failure to disclose news.

I had also mentioned if on this very same topic, if a child goes missing dependent on the age of the child, the police, media would label the child as a runaway or just plain missing. I know for a fact the GOVERNMENT could care less about our little black children, we have to form our SEARCH PARTIES and do the work ourselves. What a shame !!!

All we hear are negative statements concerning our BLACK MEN, as if they do not have any emotions which are untrue.

I can only talk on what I know and I am one that refuses to allow anyone any longer dictate to me who and what I shall worship. It is about choices and I have taken my position.

Gay people I have nothing against, whatever they do that do not affect me is their business we all have to answer to a higher power for something whoever we are, rich, poor or in between.

There are plenty of Educated Black Women married and unmarried. There are plenty of Educated Black Women that are educated through experiences in life that are doing whatever it takes to not only survive but provide for their families.

The BOTTOM LINE, THE MEDIA IS FOR ITSELF.
WHEN ARE WE GOING TO BE FOR OURSELVES?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chooseylover_1/ chooseylover_1

I must say i tend to agree with that brother Anthropological. Especially in Chicago where i live, you see more and more “sistah’s” walking down the street holding hands with “Josh, or “Ryan”, it’s more and more prevalent here. You also have black women who have this angry chip on their shoulder, that won’t speak when spoken to, these women will walk right past you and not open their mouth when a brother says “good morning”, or they will act like they are on their damn cell phone so you won’t approach them. See them going to lunch with their white co-workers acting like her name is Molly instead of Lawanda. So no, it’s not a myth about the angry, stuck up black woman, i see it every day. But to the few black women who were raised right and exhibit manners when spoken to, or who don’t judge a book by it’s cover, i salute you.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SweetCaliTea/ SweetCaliTea

Well presented, Mr. Lattimore. I definitely appreciate your opinion. Too bad most of what is in the media is often the worst of our culture like the next top story on this site, “29-Year-Old has 21 kids by 11 women.

The message about Africa was powerful as well. Most Black Americans feed into the stereotypes regarding Africa and Africans fed to us by the media (ran by white people). We read the stories and watch the commercials, and we don’t want to be connected with such poverty and savagery. In the same way, some Africans see Black Americans as lazy and classless. In the interim, we destroy relationships with people who, because of our shared pigmentation, must deal with the same bull we deal with. But because of these fictions and skewed accounts of our cultures, we remain separated and our combined strength and intelligence is damaged. We are, consequently, not prepared to demand and fight for what is right because we are too busy bickering amongst ourselves.

Like the bickering that is going on between black men and women which is based on so much more than what we see. We have inherited feelings and emotions for each other that we are not consciously aware of. But since we are so easily distracted and we fight amongst ourselves about the most insignificant things, we destroy our futures by destroying our families. Black men and women can date and love whoever they choose, but by choosing to date and have children outside of our race, by abandoning our men and women, we are destroying our race. Which is fine by most people since they think we are monkeys and idiots incapable of carrying on a decent conversation and undeserving of certain liberties, and it’s also fine with many people of our own race who find so little to celebrate and respect in each other.

It’s too bad that this will continue, and Black Americans will, on some level, hate each other and themselves because they see on television and on the news how gross, ignorant, and downright stupid Black people seem to be, even if it is just one facet of Black culture. To top it off, we have to interact every day with people of other races who see those Black people in the media and assume that you must be like those people because you are Black and then treat you accordingly.

But alas we a part of a culture that is and will be forever divided, and although this article is somewhat uplifting because it reminds us of the other facets of black culture, it will be of no consequence because we are being represented by the worst ignorance that our race as to offer. Since the positive side of Black culture either cares less as long as it doesn’t reach them specifically or wastes energy trying to fight the symptoms –racists and derogatory comments, inequality, the word Ni??r –instead of the problem –the bad apples that are representing our culture, our own declining values and sense of self (culturally speaking) that continues to destroy us–, we will continue to falter, and in the eyes of other cultures, as well as ourselves, we will continue to be weak and inferior and inept.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BlackCasper2001/ BlackCasper2001

To me, the problem is that there is so much division whether it be socioeconomic status or a social group that the media is of course, going to exploit it. They are going to automatically ignore certain things because of their belief that it is not relative to their lifestyle. The media will take time to make a certain race look bad but because members of the media don’t always openly voice their opinions, you can’t tell what they are thinking about a certain event or topic.

This was a right on point article. Many times its not just what was said but the way things are said. What got me is the one about 38% not married and no one would thing about the 68%. we as a people have to read critically and look at the way the media can slant things to make more attention for themselves.

This seems to be a strange article, Because, the media they’re talking about seems to be themselves!!! I keep reading these poor, worthless articles on Blackplanets’ media outlets, and sister outlets. You can’t put out useless nonsense, and then turn around in a different story, and say,” why are we getting poor coverage?” Duh!! How about writing decent articles that uplift Black/African People ALL the time????? I mean, I thought this was “The Blackplanet Universe”. To the writer of this article; you better not write anything else meaningful, or you might just lose your job!! lol
