UPDATE: Army Drops Rule Punishing Pregnant Soldiers

Baghdad, Iraq — The U.S. military has dropped a controversial rule that called for punishing soldiers in northern Iraq for becoming pregnant or impregnating another soldier.

The updated policy “does not include a pregnancy provision,” said Maj. Joe Scrocca, spokesman for U.S. Forces-Iraq.

The military also said that any unit must get the permission of the commander of U.S. Forces-Iraq before creating new rules restricting the activity of troops, Scrocca said.

Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo created the rule about pregnancy, covering 22,000 people under his command in northern Iraq, including 1,682 women.

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Army general in northern Iraq has added pregnancy to the list of reasons a soldier under his command could be court-martialed.

The new policy, outlined last month by Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo and released Friday by the Army, would apply to both female soldiers who become pregnant on the battlefield and the male soldiers who impregnate them.

Civilians reporting to Cucolo also could face criminal prosecution under the new guidelines.

Army spokesman George Wright said the service typically sends home from the battlefield soldiers who become pregnant. But it is not an Army-wide policy to punish them under the military’s legal code, he said.

However, division commanders like Cucolo have the authority to impose these type of restrictions to personnel operating under their command, Wright said.

Cucolo oversees forces in northern Iraq, an area that includes the cities of Kirkuk, Tikrit and Mosul. His Nov. 4 order was first reported by the military newspaper Stars and Stripes.

Cucolo’s order outlines some 20 barred activities. Most of them are aimed at keeping order and preventing criminal activity, such as selling a weapon or taking drugs.

But other restrictions seemed aimed at preventing soldiers from leaving their unit short-handed, including becoming pregnant or undergoing elective surgery that would prevent their deployment.

Under Cucolo’s order, troops also are prohibited from “sexual contact of any kind” with Iraqi nationals. And, they cannot spend the night with a member of the opposite sex, unless married or expressly permitted to do so.

    i agree with it…. if you get pregnant during a time of war specially while on deployment is wrong… and there has to be consequences with that….alot of people have this thing about getting pregnant to avoid war or deployment and i think its good that as a soldier you have to take serious responsibilities for your actions that may in anyway put in danger your brothers and sisters… even if its as simple as your absence because your pregnant…

    Unless you have been to iraq you shouldnt talk as if you have… Some people do have sex over there and some do end up pregnant… Thats no damn reason for any male or female to get chapthered out the army… Shid we not fightin 24/7.. We do get time off.. So in between time people do get horny and want some… But who are we… Oh no one, just the people who do all the dirty work…

    I agree with youngdamu87…Our service members do have to be over there for LONG amounts of time…its perfectly logical for men and women to want to do their thing…So how can the US decide who fukks and who doesnt? Who can get pregnant and who cant? If they dont want this happening, they can only revert back to disallowing women to enter the military OR not allow women to go to Iraq…Either way is going to cause chaos….SO what they should do is, do their best to make sure the women and men are well informed and PROTECTED out there sexually….If you cant fight the beast….then atleast try to get along with it…cuz when it comes to sex…people are going to get it in no matter what rule is in place…

    people have no business putting there damn say so saying that this is wrong. for one if your a civilian u dont understand it from a military view.
    when your in battle or in the warzone you need every personel you need. so to the new hyping… this up.. they need to stop and stick to what they dont know. and pick up a rifle and understand why this general made that desicion. i think when a girl gets knocked up she leaves… the whole company and squad in a burden.. specialy for manpower… and here girls wanna be in a mans war but then wanan get knocked up to get a free ride.

Youre making it seem as if the women and the women alone are at fault for this. There is no way this rule is going to stop people from having sex after being TOGETHER, LONELY and HORNY for years at a time…When people are in unfamiliar territory (i.e. Iraq,afghan etc), it is only natural for those of the same ‘kind’ to latch on to each other, look to each other for whatever needs to be met. Instead of this rule, they should do SOMETHING more REALISTIC than saying ‘NO! dont do what GROWN PEOPLE naturally are programmed to do!”. So if the ‘girls’ are getting knocked up…lets just put a rule on the MEN to keep them from knocking people up!

    To califemme: obviously you have never been deployed or stationed anywhere to know that most PX at BIG operations bases sell condoms… YES PEOPLE THEY SELL CONDOMS DURING WAR! I agree that both should be punished. The male should be punished for dropping his proverbial seed (as you soo eloquently called it) and the female should be hammered just the same. Now my job in the army in infantry. Didnt have to deal with women much, unless they were working in the dfac or running our supplies out to our COB’s. But there were alot of females who were on the logpac out to our bases. If even one of them were to get pregnant, then not only would our mission be in jeopardy, but their mission would be even worse because now because of one solider not keeping his dick in his pants and one female not keeping her legs closed boots on the ground are lowered. So yes both parties should be court martialed! Because how fair is it to other women in the unit that want to actually make something of their military career if they are constantly being looked upon as inferior when their counterparts are getting knocked up all for the sake of not deploying. So your theory are based upon pure hearsay. You sign the contract… you do the time. If you get pregnant in garrison, thats a different story. But if you are deployed and get knocked up. It should be a dishonorable discharge on both soldiers for dereliction of duty plain and simple!

    Well being deployed is stressful as hell and soldiers are humans just like everyone else. There’s no need to punish any one for becoming pregnant. Anyone that has been deployed knows that even if you have your whole unit on the ground you are still going to be short-handed. There’s always going to be soldiers that abuse sick call and do everything they can think of to get out of duty. Plus soldiers are being rotated home for leave and who is to say they won’t become pregnant then! Just because soldiers are in a combat zone doesn’t mean their hormones stop! I don’t think a female soldier would get pregnant on purpose to leave Iraq, hell she could do that state side and never have to set boots on the sands of Iraq. To go over and get pregnant would just be stupid. If a female soldier gets pregnant in Iraq well s**t happens! Any real soldier knows that being in the military you don’t have everything you need all the time to accomplish your mission so you do what REAL SOLDIERS do… You adapt, overcome, and still GET THE F**KING MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

    Mandingo53…You are right, I have never been deployed and I dont claim to be full versed on what goes on over there when you guys are. All I’m saying is, how do you STOP people from doing what PEOPLE do? Dont get me wrong babe, I hear EVERYTHING you are saying and I agree with your points. The simple fact that they sell condoms just goes to show that they KNOW what is liable to happen and it can not be detered.

    Having sex is a choice just like every other choice made. No one forced you to sign the contract to enter the military and no one is forcing you to have sex while deployed. Yes the PX sells condoms, hell the TMC even gives them away. It is human nature to have sex but if you can control yourself you should not have to worry about the problem. Being lonely is an excuse, stressed is another excuse and horny is something everyone gets but when it’s all said and done, you make the choice to have sex. Make the choice to use a condom and hope for the best, don’t end up getting caught by MPs for doing it in a bunker… P.S. Yes I am a soldier, yes I have deployed to Iraq and I’m back there again…

    Man, they get pregnant to get out of what they sighned up for! there should be some kind of consequences. even on leave they should have some kind of dicipline! pull out, swallow or something, we are all told the rules and regulation of deployment we must all follow they are not easing up on the rules for men. if you are going to drink alcohol, smoke weed, have sex ETC Don’t get caught! Women fought for equality to serve in the military so you should obey the rules When we get deployed sex is not allowed don’t get caught! plain and simple! now its gonna be an open f**k fest for support units! Thats great, like paper pushers don’t have it easy enough with your BBQ’s and volley ball tournaments while we are sweating and dieing on the streets!

    a lot of the comments on here are pretty special(and not in a good way either)…before women were allowed in the military, do you really think that male soldiers weren’t still “having sex”?? whether they were banging eachother, prisoners, locals, or just plain out raping females and males alike…(and the good guys were just palmin it). Unlike some of you, i’ve been deployed to Iraq and now currently in Afghan, and “NO” I don’t fight outside the “wire”(thank God), but i do FOB hop…Yes, infantrymen/foot soldiers/MPS are brave and blah blah blah, i can give that to you, but you’re not all angles either because some of you act like you don’t know what “NO or STOP” means…So we can all stop pointing fingers…it takes two to make a baby, and it’s not always the female thats planning the pregnancy…

    Truthfully, people are gonna have sex regardless…If you gonna do it, just be smart about it and use protection, whether it be comdoms, BC pills or flippin saran wrap…
    My mind is more on the “dont ask, dont tell” issue…Now thats the crap thats gonna get people hurt… We gotta share showers, bathrooms, and living quarters with people of the same sex that are attracted to the same sex… WFT?!? Have you ever been cornered in the shower by some dike broad with cornrows, tellin you how great you look in a towel…or maybe you wake up one night with you gay ass roommate standing over you, sayin “one day you gonna meet a female thats gonna turn you”….

    And last but not least…no, (some)pregnant female cannot run fast…but neither can men with blue balls/swollen testies… :-)
