PHILADELPHIA — A Pennsylvania university’s requirement that overweight undergraduates take a fitness course to receive their degrees has raised the hackles of students and the eyebrows of health and legal experts.

Officials at historically black Lincoln University said Friday that the school is simply concerned about high rates of obesity and diabetes, especially in the African-American community.

“We know we’re in the midst of an obesity epidemic,” said James L. DeBoy, chairman of Lincoln’s department of health, physical education and recreation. “We have an obligation to address this head on, knowing full well there’s going to be some fallout.”

The fallout began this week on Lincoln’s campus about 45 miles southwest of Philadelphia, where seniors — the first class affected by the mandate — began realizing their last chance to take the class would be this spring.

Tiana Lawson, a 21-year-old senior, wrote in this week’s edition of The Lincolnian, the student newspaper, that she “didn’t come to Lincoln to be told that my weight is not in an acceptable range. I came here to get an education.”

In an interview Friday, Lawson said she has no problem with getting healthy or losing weight. But she does have a problem with larger students being singled out.

“If Lincoln truly is concerned about everyone being healthy, then everyone should have to take this gym class, not just people who happen to be bigger,” she said.

The mandate, which took effect for freshmen entering in fall 2006, requires students to get tested for their body mass index, a measure of weight to height.

A normal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. Students with one that’s 30 or above — considered obese — are required to take a class called “Fitness for Life,” which meets three hours a week.

The course involves walking, aerobics, weight training and other physical activities, as well as information on nutrition, stress and sleep, DeBoy said.

As of this fall, DeBoy estimated about 80 seniors — 16 percent of the class — had not had their body mass index tested nor taken the fitness class. Some of those students will likely be exempt from taking the class once they get their BMI results, he said.

Health experts applaud the school’s intent, if not its execution. Mark Rothstein, director of the bioethics institute at the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine, said being forced to disclose such health information is “at least awkward and often distasteful.”

And it doesn’t necessarily lead to the best outcomes, he said, noting that “when the (health) goals are imposed on people, they don’t do that well in meeting them.”

DeBoy stressed that students are not required to lose weight or lower their BMI; they must only pass the class through attendance and participation.

“It’s the sound mind and the sound body concept,” DeBoy said. “I think the university, to its credit, is trying to be proactive.”

Some experts said recent amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act might lead to exemptions for morbidly obese students, who could argue that participating in the class would be dangerous.

Also, students need more than exercise, said Marcia Costello, a registered dietitian in the Philadelphia area. The university should make sure its dining halls and vending machines offer healthy choices, she said.

Costello, an assistant professor of nursing at Villanova University, also noted that body mass index can be misleading. Since muscle weighs more than fat, “it is possible to be overweight and still be physically fit,” she said.

Lawson, a mass communications major, said while she believes her current BMI would exempt her from the class, she’s going to take it anyway “because I would like to be healthier.”

“This was a decision that I made,” she wrote in The Lincolnian, “and that’s the way it ought to be.”

OK-HBCU…Ya’ll need to JUST stop with the BULLSH^T. If your going to use the words OVER WEIGHT-as a CONCERN then DON’T PUT A COLOR TO IT AND MAKE THE CLASS FOR EVERYONE. AS for them to get a DEGREE have to be a size to FIT ya’ll-on HOW a person should LOOK is CRAZY. I SMELL SOME STRONG SH^T-BULL SH^T at that…IF your GOING to MAKE A CLASS FOR THE STUDENTS THEN THE TEACHERS AND BOARD MEMEBERS NEED TO DO THE SAME INORDER TO WORK THERE OR SIT IN ON THE BOARD…FAIR IS FAIR.

Wow. I can appreciate what they are trying to do, but they are going about it the wrong way. Like it was mentioned in the article, if it is about sound mind and body, EVERY student should be required to take the class. Skinny does not equal healthy. We could all use healthy eating or stress reducing tips. People don’t like to be singled out, so they just need to level the playing field.

they shouldnt be FORCED to lose weight. nor discriminated against for their weight, unless their position REQUIRES them to be in good shape to carry out certain tasks n what not.

    your health is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

USA is suposed to be about Freedom but everywhere I look, someone is always telling people what they can and cant do.

health dont start with doctors hospitals and drugs…. health starts with the quality of foods we eat, our thoughts/emotions and being active or getting exercise in.

Although I am a stickler for being in shape and fitness, my friends wonder how I stay in the same shape as when I toured the World for the International Police Force (USMC) for many years.
It has a lot to do with how you perceive yourself and what was place in front of you growing up. When I was a Child there was a big argument with the Family about eating and consuming the wrong things, Thank the MOST HIGH GOD because without his strength, this never would have been possible. True to form in 1994 I fell fourteen feet onto Concrete, but having been trained in the Military to step out of planes, I rolled in the air and I fell on the aluminum ladder which broke the femur head off. Thankfully to the MOST HIGH GOD, I missed the picket fence that was two feet to my right going face down, I was able to get up and drive a (5) speed to the Hospital and to the surprise of the Hospital staff they could not believe at the age of (40) that and I quote the Doctor “it is amazing that you are alive, most people who fall that far simply do not make it, but you have the body build of a (25)year old College athlete.” When I explain to him that I do not eat certain things in which mainstream America has perceived that we as African Americans consumed, I do not eat because of my double heritage.
Now yes, when can level the playing field and it has been, we have on staff registered dietitians who are African American, but most do not go or heed there advice; we have not allowed ourselves to learn from the mistakes of the past in which so many which does not go reported in the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Academy) about AA passing on from HPB (High Blood Pressure) LBP (Low Blood Pressure), diabetes and other ailments. Until we can stop and carefully with the proper cognizance make the correct choices these cycles continue within the family.

To Mountaingirl09-you are exactly correct the weight and health is no ones business but that person, but you had better heed what I am saying to this. Now that person who has taken that physical for the job may not get it when the results come back and that person (just graduated from College) and they are told (which is the Company’s right) that they are sorry but because of your physical you do not meet our company standards for employment at this time, Now as I am a (Jurisprudence Student) I can tell you the word SUE is not going to fly, simply because that Doctor is looking out for the bottom line of the Company interest. Oh, by the way, this is becoming more and more prevelant.

to trish_369 you are also correct in your assessment of the Board and the Faculty of the University, it is however your right to see if their supposition to the effect that the duties which the Board Members adhere to and the Teachers will be conducive to the strengths and weaknesses that will place upon the Graduating students, These (and I am only speculating)people may have gain this weight over time, where their concern for the students getting ready to put on their regalia is getting ready to proceed into a hostile, economic environment which as you know and I know already is up against them, so before one weighs in on these things think about the concern that they may have been pondering for the this Graduating class.

I think that the school has good intentions but I think that it’s going about it in a terrible way. They really should make this course mandatory for ALL students and it should be an ongoing elective, not a last minute kick in the ass before you leave.
There are people who are not obese who also have terrible eating and exercise habits and they shouldn’t be excused from this course.
All that will happen is some people will binge exercise when their weigh date comes around so that they wont have to take the class and then fall back into old habits afterward, OR they can’t do that and they end up feeling like they are being punished for being overweight.

Get it together, HBCU’s. This isn’t helping anything.

Warning signs have been advertised, discussions have been aired and too many examples have been given regarding the ill effects on obesity and we
continue to see bad habits linked to obesity. I’m glad someone is now
doing something about it instead of just talking about it. I think
smoking and elective obesity should disqualify anyone from medical
insurance. I agree that a mandate regarding obesity should be in place.
Those fat azz students need to take their lazy arses in for a work out
and introduced to healthy living via nutrition and exercise so that they
can pass it on to their offspring.

What I hate is you can be seated on a bus or train and some two ton
fatt butt takes a seat next to you and squishes you into the window.
What I usually do on a train is get up and down a hundred times until
they get so frutstrated and request a seat change. I hate that. If
there was an emergency, you’d have to climb over a mountain of fat to get
out. Over indulgence is a sin – Obesity is a sin no matter how you look at
it. The only exception is if there is an illness which causes the obesity.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/maddox2u2/ maddox2u2

I had a two friends who came over – a male and a female – and parked their
fat butts in a chair on my deck. When they sat down the chair kept going down to the floor and split into. I hate that. No fat ain’t where it’s at.
I do not invite these people over anymore.

This approach isn’t the right way to do this. In my major, I have to take 3hrs of P.E. and a health class in order to graduate. I’m not overweight at all. It’s just that the university is just targeting the overweight students only. That’s where the discrimination comes in. I feel like all students regardless of what college or university they attend should take one P.E. and one health class before they graduate. Institutions of higher learning should be producing well rounded people overall.

    Ahahahahhahahhaha @maddox2u2

I’m ticky about my ish too, but I wouldn’t have them sitting in those chairs anymore! lol

I don’t see how schools could control this other than having healthier foods at the school eating places. But lets be realisitc, college is a business. What do they look like turning down Pizza Huts money in order to be on the premisis.

In all actuality, people look fine the way they are, but heart disease, high blood pressure, and strokes are not the way to go. If your weight is causing this, you need to change. Black people actually look better alive than dead. And c’mon people, we shouldn’t wait until we get obese for our height to start trying to change things, we should be indulging in preventive methods to keep bad health at bay. Don’t get all fat, then start trying to do sh*t. Leave that red meat, and all that other garbage alone. Exercise. This sh*t really ain’t that hard. Anyone that claims to be a DISCIPLE of the Lord should understand DISCIPLine is what it takes to get this obesity problem lowered in our community.

This is one of the reason so many cultures has come to this country and has by passed us in so many areas and please do not let me spell it out because they are evident.
To the matter at hand we need to start making choices of what is and what is not, when it comes to serving food to our love ones.
Take care o one another, it is the only way to get moving forward on this health issue, but and I do say but, if you believe that it is not a group thing, then go at it alone, there are Doctors that will definitely tell the family we did all we could. THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES TO EATING THAT WHICH IS NOT FOOD OR YOU.

HBCU’s have definitely fallen off since the 60′s. My HBCU enforced a no hat rule, amongst other rules that youd see in a junior high and now this. Where’s the emphasis on education. HBCU’s use to produce scholars, entrepreneurs, thinkers, and leaders now they produce cashiers and administrative assistants. HBCU’s also allow all the the black athletes to attend these white schools and produce millions of dollars for their sports programs which is more than beneficial for the schools and not so much for the athletes they’re using.
Lets take it back to the pre-integration mindset.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LUNATIK713/ LUNATIK713

The university intent comes off as f**ked up. They say it’s for the students health their education should be priority first. Like a lot of people have said on here it should have been done a better way. If these universities are are so concerned then make it a graduation requirement that these students take a p.e. class their senior year. I mean I’m a big man and I don’t want my damn school telling me I can’t graduate because I’m overweight I feel if I’m paying my tuition on time and making the grade then no school has the right to tell me I can’t get my paper because of my weight. If that’s the case then tell those anorexic people they can’t graduate because they’re too small and see how well that goes over. Just because someone is big doesn’t mean they’re unhealthy because skinny doesn’t mean you’re healthy either. That’s my two cents. *SMDH*

this_here_is-1of1 you have got to have someone in your family that knows the deal like I do.
    1. Brown V. Board of Education was not for anything but separate but Equal (well we know that was not going to work in this society).
    2. When this was force down the throats of he old GUARD, they came up with the Greatest plan in the World, no way in you know what will we make it equal but we will integrate. Now they have a way of keeping up with you while you fail all at the same time.
    3. Yes, our uneducated kind at the time thought that it was great “Child my son is going to School on a Football Scholarship, or Child my Son is going to School on a Basketball Scholarship and they are going to Michigan State, Auburn, or Alabama. Well, when we fell for that mess, that took the money from our HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES, and the money went into the coffers of the Schools mentioned above. I was born and raised in Alabama, and I well remember how the establishment did not wish to have the (Niggas on the football team-the White Folks word) not mind. This Changed when USC came to play Alabama and Clarence Davis ran up and down their butts, the next thing you start seeing is Negroes on the field. If you look at these teams now they are over ran with these Black Athletes, but how many truly have their College Degrees. Every now and then you will here a Sports Commentator say and he is graduating on time.

It never was about Integration, just leveling the field and then see what is what.

I think there should be certain waivers like if somebody has a condition that prevents them from losing weight, but then again they would probably be on some kind of disability. There is nothing wrong for an organization to have standards, the military has them why shouldn’t certain schools ? This standard for this school has been set since 2006 and I am sure it has increased discipline for overweight students to lose weight. I see a lot of overweight people stuffing they’re faces at McDonalds on campuses and they always seem to have a s**tty attitude and a lack of energy because of they’re habbits and they’re situations and I don’t see a whole lot of fat joggers.

I understand what the college is doing, but like a lot of the people who have posted, I think they are going about it in the wrong way. If they are so concerned with the students health, then they need to make sure that all students take the PE class and that the food they serve is healthy too. And if this college is like mine they probably have some fast food chain avaliable in their cafateria. (We have a Popeye’s)
The college I go to has Physical Ed. classes as a mandatory elective, so we all have to take it in order to graduate. This is a better idea to me because we come in knowing that we have to take a PE class. Telling them they have to lose weight IN ORDER to graduate is just wrong IMO.

To be a Higher Education Institution, they should know we pick up weight when we is in college. Long study hrs, small portion of eating and eating quick between classes contribute to it.

Obesity is a serious health issue which gives rise to many fatal illness,
diabetes, breast cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver and kidney
failure. We see too much of this in the black community and people go on eating fat burgers, red meats, mounds of sugar. Maybe there shouldn’t be
a mandatory fitness program; let the idiots eat themselves to an early grave like they’re accustomed to doing.

I think if they tried working out, they might like it. I started when I was in middle school and I still work out on a daily basis running six miles
in the AM and six in the PM. It’s a great feeling. If kids never experience it, they can’t appreciate the benefits it offers.

I will post a note some angry person sent me provided I didn’t delete it.

Are they going to make people with bad credit take a financial class so they do not sink this economy further? Give me a break. I heard an interview on NPR with one of the faculty members. The interviewer asked him if they were providing healthy foods to the students, and he responded they are underfunded & healthy food costs more.
Now tell me what is the point of this?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cookies1972/ cookies1972

I understand the reasoning behind this but the University should not be able to do this. Students are paying for their education and the end result should be their choice if they want to lose weight or not. Now, if the University is “Tuition Free” then by all means make them take the class.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/enuf_b_enuf/ enuf_b_enuf

My response to Lincoln University is “What took you so long?” I think its a shame that Lincoln isn’t getting more support. The best health-care reform is to take responsibility for your health, not to legislate it. for every person who screams at politicians for change, here is a black institution that at least says they care and would like to take steps towards improvement. Weather you agree or disagree with the methods, at least they show they care.

Who among you critics can show the same level of commitment towards improving the lives of your people or at the very least show some effort in descreasing the health gap between blacks and every other race?

Though I don’t think its fair that larger students are being singled out the concept is not a bad one. I think that it is unfair that students have to pay for the class, who can afford to use grant or loan money for classes that aren’t in your major. However a class like this at any school can be beneficial as long as all have to take it.

These “skin off the chicken” topics upset me, we need to get down to the bone of the “real” people pushing these issues and why all of a sudden is it taking place

While I undertake where they are going with this I can’t say I agree with this concept. As alot of people have mentioned why should students have to pay out of pocket, with loans, or grants for a class that is not under any school’s general ed reqs or the major the student has chosen. I’ve attended an HBCU in the past and the cafeteria food is not the healthiest nor are the several greasy spoon ala carte places on campus. Maybe they should start there and replace those foods with healthier choices instead of imposing a class on obese students. I also think a big misconception is that students who are obese are the only ones with health problems. If the goal is to make students healthy then why not violate all students HIPAA rights and require a full medical history disclosure of all students and require anyone with a health concern to take the class? There is another way this school could go about adressing their concerns otherwise they may experience an influx of students transferring to other schools. My school offers a similar course but it’s not imposed upon students which makes it alot more fun than being forced to take a class just because you don’t like the way I look. As adults these students have to be trusted to make conscious choices for their own health.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Grn_Eyed_QT/ Grn_Eyed_QT

This is nothing new…Lincoln U is just putting it out in the open….obese people have been discriminated against for a long time…they were just never told why….they were just ignored… we do not live an equal society…although the school is dealing with this from a health perspective…society will not…employers have been doing it a long time…now they can do it openly by saying our insurance company won’t hire you because you don’t meet the weight requirements…it’s the same as smokers…companies do not have to hire smokers…and can tell current smokers if they don’t quite within a certain amount of time they will be fired…because the insurance company will not insure smokers…although I question this colleges ability to enforce this I can certainly see the how the students will benefit in the long run.

The Universities intent is well noted however, they are placing themselves in a position that can have some legal ramifications. This class should be given to all studnets as part of an orientation. Every student will have to take it as part of the curriculum and it should be addressed in the beginning of the college students career. I believe it will have the most impact in that forum because the students can begin to make changes to their lifestyles in an environment that will offer a multitude of support systems to make exercise an integral part of that students lifestyle.

Many people who have never engaged in an exercise regiment do not really understand the positive effects that it can have on your mood, demeanor and overall health (mental, emotional, physical). Properly integrating this program into the curriculum of all students (not just those with high BMI)offers the education but makes it a personal decision to embrace the lifestyle. It’s not about politics it’s about personal change and wellness that can have a positive impact on the individuals involved and their future generations.

You would think that a university of this stature to have a better method of integrating this program into their curriculum. It appears that this is something that was discussed and someone dropped the ball and is trying to impose a knee jerk reaction to get the necessary credit for their BFI (Bright F**king Idea)or any financial benefits that may be a result of this program.

    Peace

I think it’s a great idea. The last thing on our youths mind is their own health. There needs to be some accountability. People talk about discrimination and all that. If you own a company, do you want to add someone’s future heart attack or diabetes to your list of expenses when you can have hire someone that respects themselves enough to take care of there body. I use Monique as an example. She would try to sell all this as long as your happy that all that matters mentality. When we all know if you lead a unhealthy life it’s just a matter of time before the doctor pulls you aside and says your diabetic, your blood pressure is to high or whatever. Now you see she started to lose weight, now she is truly making a difference in people’s lives. I speak from example I have a kidney disease, got it out of nowhere. If I didn’t lead a healthy lifestyle prior to the disease I might not be here now. As a community we need to make health a priority and empower each other with tough love and forget this P.C. crap.

yes! I totally agree – they should force this entire city of fat f**ks n2 the same thing. Fatness and slovenly ppl are too common here. Awesome effort!

This is a required health course intended to help save lives. I also agree that it’s a good idea…black people should be looking out for their own. The obesity rate is the highest among black people in this country. Those in college should be educated and pass along that knowledge along to their kids and those around them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shoot4damoon/ shoot4damoon

Always thought a health class was already a prerequisite to graduate college.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Mz_KJ2008/ Mz_KJ2008

I understand both sides of the issue. The university is doing the right thing by looking out for its students’ health, but the way they are going about it is offensive to me. As a large woman and HBCU student myself, I get enough criticism and discrimination enough. I thought college is a place to be yourself and get an education. It’s not fair that us large students be singled out to take a class just because of our weight.

People are complaining that they are paying money to go to school for education and its wrong for them to have to pay for something that IS educating them. I would rather pay a school/educators on how to improve my health, help me, motivate me to be healthy than a DOCTOR who is has to work on you after having a heart attack or meds for diabetes which are both can be from unhealthy eating and overweight lifestyles…BUT I do think its wrong that they single overweight ppl to be the only problem with people. Why dont they make everyone take a drug test before they graduate, or a parenting class for the students as a prereq ? Marriage class? Good samaritan class?

Wake up people its NOT about there WEIGHT because if you look at the FACTS-1)THEY ARE BLACK.
    2)ITS TAKING AWAY YOUR RIGHTS/FREEDOM.
3)IF THEY REALLY CARED ABOUT THERE WEIGHT-WHY WAIT UNTIL NOW TO SAY SOMETHING?
4)WHY MAKE THEM PAY or NOT LET THEM GRADUATE-ADDING MORE STRESS-THAT LEAD TO MORE HEALTH PROBLEMS?
5)WHY NOT MAKE THOSE RULES FOR EVERYBODY-INCLUDING THE STAFF/TEACHERS,SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS…ITS ONLY FAIR.
    (JUST MY OPINION)

    Only at a black school…
    (Shakin My Head)
what about ALL the unprotected sex that make the school clinic have a seminar to teach parents how to read their school bill for their own children because all of a suddent the have a $100-$400 hold on their account???
We have bigger fish to fry ppl.

those kids are GRADUATING with a Bachelor’s when alot of their peers prolly didnt finish high school let alone attend a college.

The minority woman is not even up for a real chance because everyone is waitin for her to be the “w***e” that she is classifed as and have 3kids by 4different baby daddies and to get on welfare(even though 60% of welfare clients are whiiiiiite!!!!) or to be someones crack w***e.

the blackman is only good enuff to make rap songz, dribble a ball, sell drugs,or a number in jail.

It is haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard getting thru college
let alone a black one with alllll the bs they put u thru(i went to one.
So why is it that we as a ppl are rnning with scissors??? our graduation rate ARE NOT cute
Our college admission rate are not funny
our graduation rate for high school are sickening.

Bottom Line: You Have To Crawl B4 You Walk…

Im proud they even walkin the stage.

I know it sounds bad that a university is trying to control people, but its NEEDED in our community. I lost two family members this year due to diabetes. Look at the death rate and statistics of problems that being overweight causes before making ignorant comments.
