Seriously, they are both heros, and this is a low blow.

While they both are heroes, why did it take so long to give the black officer credit for taking the Major down? I wonder how much press he will get from Fox news who praised the female officer as a national hero.

It is not necessarily a low blow nor racist because it was reported that a female officer took down the shooter. Now bringing attention to that fact that the officer was a female and ignoring the gender of the white male officer who was also shot indicates that the reporting that the hero was a female officer was gender related. It was it necessary to mention that officer was female? It if is unnecessary to mention that the officer is black or white then it equally unnecessary to mention that an officer is female.

We have seen this before when the black female solder that was captured in Iraq in the first gulf war was ignore while the white female solder got the glory and was called a hero. While in fact the black female solder was injured and white solder was not nor was captured by the Iraqis.

Tell me something people this man looks like a hero but acts like a rebot. Please act as if you are human. You talk like a fool in a uniform. Please relax and look in a mirror next time you interview with the world.

It doesn’t really matter that the cop who shot him is Black, but the question we should be asking is, why was the white, female cop made out to be the “hero” in this case? Did someone think it would make a better story if she was portrayed as the shooter, or was it a simple and honest mistake? Black men are always being portrayed as useless, worthless, lazy so and so’s, and NEVER portrayed as real everyday heroes outside of the stadiums, so its curious to me, that a mistake like this was not only made, but has taken this long to be cleared up!

People really have to ask if it matters? Of course his race matters, whats funny, is how they’re trying to done play his actions. Alot of news shows are trying to make it seem like she acted alone. For the record, they both should be commended equally. As far as his race, racism in this country is still very prevelant.the image of a blackman doing his job, may mean the difference between a child not buying into the aint no good blackmen myth. For every 100 negative depection of blackmen, theres 1 or 2 good ones. So give the blackman whom unloaded on that savage his due.

This is actually a relevant story, my friend who was stationed at hood in 02 had the story of her losing both legs in Iraq over looked by the story of Jessica Lynch( and she damn sure ain’t no hero)and they were at Brooks Army Medical Center at the same time(but who got the shine)and she didn’t do s**t but get her ass whipped. So it is true that they are always going to make white people out to be the hero’s and looked over anybody else.

The news sources got things all mixed up when originally reporting this story. How can you mistakenly say the shooter is dead, when he was really alive and all the people is standing around him?

To me…it does matters that the news sources accurately report what who and where. This incidents will go down in history and if not reported accurately (as so many other events african americans have been involved with) the blackman will not properly getting his props.

This is typical America always glorifying the white race and make white people always feeling superior over any other race of people. I’m glad this story made it to BP so I can put in my say. The American media were so quick to claim this white female officer as the heroin and made no mention of her black partner who in fact secured the the suspected gunman. The fact is that the white female officer might have been nursing a bullet wound inflicted to her wrist and had to lay low while this black officer took command and secured the gunman. If you ask me, Maj. Nadil Malik Hasan would not have been alive if it wasn’t for Senior Sgt. Mark Todd. I think if it was an arrogant white male officer then Maj. Nadil Malik Hasan would have been dead because they wouldn’t have excercise the measures Senior Sgt. Mark Todd took in securing the suspected gunman. If you dont believe me just take a look what a lot of these ignorant white male officers are doing in most black communities. They have no love or compassion for human life let alone the lives of young black men. But, back to the story, I think Senior Sgt. Mark Todd should be given an award for doing his job and also an award for being a Humanitarian.

WOW, HAD IT not been for the other accounts of the shooting she would have acted like it was her who shot the Maj and knowing full well she didn,t hit him. As the daughter of a 40 year vet and the wife of an active duty navy Petty Officer, I will say one thing, BIG FREAKIN’ DEAL…..the damn man is dead and it is over. How can we be wrong for asking why the media propped up the white woman when the black man stopped the shooter? Before they aired the story, before they put them on the Today show, before they hyped up this little woman, the media should have checked the facts. The media loves smearing the black man’s image daily, but refuses to get one good fact about a black man right. It’s disappointing and negligent.

Interesting how so many folk say “Race doesn’t matter, why are we always focused on black and white?” when misstated facts rob a black person (or man) of proper credit.

However, when misstated facts give a black man credit he may not be due (which obviously doesn’t happen often), those same folks are complaining about the factual inaccuracies and how the media is involved in a double standard in favor of blacks (if you don’t think this happens, watch Fox News).

With all the people who get shot by law enforcement, why is this such a big deal? Oprah, the news, and these cops should be ashamed of themselves. The guy was obviously crazy and unfortunately had to be taken down but turning this into a big azz media frenzy, while debating who shot him and who’s the hero is ridiculous.

It appears that he was instructed to say that they were BOTH involved in nuetralizing the suspect. Seems to me that it would be hard for her to be firing at the suspect if she is on the ground with bullets in her legs and her hand. And if you saw her on Oprah, she kep her hand underneath the blanket so you couldnt see that it was probably too injured for her to be able to keep shooting at the guy. Since 9/11 and all the school shootings police officers are now trained to be first responders, shoot first ask questions later. They are trained to immediately access the situation and take appropriate action. Regardless of who was first on the scene it wasnt about either of them trying to be heroes, they were just doing their jobs.

Every post that I’ve read has some element of truth. For whatever reasons, events unfolded and here we are, not one of us actually involved or working from first hand knowledge or experience. All of us just lapping up what the media gives us. And the media gave us a heroic white female. And as sure as I am a child of God, if there hadn’t been conflicting stories and evidence we would never have known about the black male. I’m glad that all concerned were there to do their job. I don’t know if the female’s actions exacerberated the situation, most likeley her actions made what followed possible. And she should receive credit for those actions. But anyone who believes that black and white people receive equal treatment from the media should share their drugs. Blacks need to be represented as honestly as possible. When we (black people) do heroic things without getting the (expletive) shot out us then it needs to be represented. But the fact is, neither the popular media nor popular culture have any desire for a positive image of a black male. We, the black people of america, have been brain washed for so long in so many different ways. The places that we were forced to live engraved on our psyche that that is how the world was. That it didn’t get any better than, not for us. And if you think that the accuracy of who did what doesn’t matter, then those of us who are old enough will tell you how we were taught that Malcolm X was an evil man who brought violence to (white) American homes. I bet that some of you out there had a teacher in the same mold as one of my elementary teachers that told me that Nat Turner was a sick man who set fire to the houses of good people. There are still parts of this story that are missing. There was shooting at various areas on Hood that day. To date, I haven’t heard what all the other shooting was about. In the mayhem that follows, I wonder if they’ll ever be able to fully know everything that went down here on that horrible day…

This kind of stuff has been going on since the test of time. HISTORY tells us that blacks have been alleviated from receiving honors they have earned. Look at the story about the Tuskegee Airmen (black pilots), the buffalo soldiers (black soldiers), etc. Many blacks were heroes but credit was given to their white counterparts. Some of these black heroes received their honors when they were dead, so their living relatives accepted them. They were dead so they did not receive the glory.

There are even accomplishments/contributions that blacks have made that their white counterparts got credit for…for instance Eli Whitney (black slave) invented the cotton gin, but, his white slave master took credit. There are more, but, we as black people have to educate ourselves and children on this. A black man invented the stop light that we use in traffic today and all over the world. They won’t tell you that, so we have to educate ourselves. A black man invented peanut butter, the pencil, performed the first heart transplant, etc.

These are things we should know as a people and teach it to our children. All they are giving us is the history on George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, The revolutionary war (which the end result is where 4th of july came from. the slaves were not free at that time which is why I do not celebrate 4th of July). etc
