Obama: Height Was “Godmother Of The Civil Rights Movement”

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is calling the late Dorothy Height “the godmother of the civil rights movement” and a hero to many Americans.

Height led the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years. She died Tuesday at age 98.

Obama said in a statement that he and his wife, Michelle, were deeply saddened by the news.

He said Height was the only woman at the highest level of the civil rights movement and witnessed “every march and milestone along the way.”

    I had deep admiration for this woman when I was younger. Still do. The great ones are all dying and being replaced by clowns like Nikki Minaj. Sad.

    Dr. Dorothy Irene Height’s legacy was of service. She served the world and has earned her right to rest in peace. Thank you Dr. Height for all you have done and for letting us see your light and use it to shed light on the dark times in our history. You made a difference and for that we are thankful. I miss you and I thank you for your leadership and for your words of inspiration.
